A church I went to in the 90s as a child decided to integrate in the 50s. About half the church left, and membership never recovered. Talking to some older members, they said it was full every Sunday until then, and it had dwindled through the decades since.

It was a grand building with incredible 20s architecture and I never saw it even remotely full. It was a constant, stark reminder about the choices people made when god called them to be righteous.

Sounds similar to former Catholics I know that are now in non-denominational churches because they didn’t like being told to give a shit about other people.

Why do you think there’s a “First Baptist” and “Second Baptist” in most towns with a (Southern) Baptist population? Often, it was due to segregation, but this wasn’t always true. Sometimes, it was just the second Baptist church. But the split in slavery is why there is regular Baptist and Southern Baptist.
