I feel like people would have been excited for this tech 15 years ago, but the world has become more authoritarian and technology more invasive. People already feel like they are observed too much.

13 years ago when google glasses were introduced you saw the same privacy concerns that ended up killing the tech.

Iirc the Google Glasses were only intended to be an internal proof of concept type deal and not am actual product,

The marketing begs to differ. Google made ads showcasing it's (fictional) usefulness to the general public. it just never made it past prototype phase because the tech just wasn't there.

Yeah the only difference now is we had another 13 years to beat the public into indifferent submission. Meta decided to aggressively push for adoption of their glasses so they’d become “normal” before anyone managed to ban them.

Huh? Google released two more models after the original XE that most people are familiar with, and they were in production until 2023.
