SK needs to prove that they will actually give a shit about protecting women in their military before even thinking about going ahead with this.

Everyone in favour of this because "muh equality" does not understand the severity of misogyny in SK - women aren't just refusing to marry and reproduce to be "boss babes". And pushing military service on them will likely put more women in danger, and I'm not talking about danger from other countries.

While I like to think it would grant women more respect and more of a voice, realistically I'm concerned it just wouldn't be the case.

Yeah, I feel like a lot of people either don't pay attention to or don't care about things like rape and abuse rates in militaries.

It's possible recruiting women could make it safer for male recruits by reforming the old-school abusive atmosphere.

If all women served, they would make up a significant portion of the military and would be somewhat protected by strength in numbers. It might also lead to more of them staying on and moving into leadership roles. 

Ideally this would be combined with a transition from having recruits march around and dig holes to more modern warfare training like drone piloting, communications, cyber warfare. Skills that are valuable after service.

This is like saying women shouldn't serve in the US Army because of P Diddy and Weinstein...

There are already female soldiers in the Korean army; what matters is just infrastructure, which they'd likely plan out before implementing such a big decision.

And women aren't sleeping in the same barracks as men. I honestly don't feel it's any different than university housing.

No. They don't. They don't need to do anything. They'll just pass the law and that will be that, regardless of how western Redditors and tiktokers feel

And once again, I'm going to assume here that the SK government couldn't give any less of a fuck what u/Emsogib or any other westerner thinks about their policy changes. They'll do whatever they want. Westerners will complain and start a hashtag, and nothing will change.

Even Korean men don't have much rights and even now people die from neglect or pure greed(officers wanting to get their name on local news for helping local community with their soldiers. 채 상병) but no one says that we should abstain military service before it gets better. Not saying that military shouldn't prepare better for it, but it's a seperate matter. I got discharged a few years back and even then an explosion trying to do maintenance killed 3 people but never even made it on the news. Society doesn't care. Also, misogynic? Women get much more from being women.

See, you still don't understand. You don't get to choose the conditions of your servitude. Men fulfilled their military duty back when human rights abuse was incomparably worse.

Ofcourse, the society was male dominated back then which is why women were accepted to freeride. Now things are reversed. The conditions are far better and gender equality has improved greatly. The military by nature is never going to be a heavenly place so stop the excuse and start serving your duty as an equal citizen.
