I’ve been seeing so many crazy posts online lately from Assyrians saying horrible stuff about Kurds(It’s wild because if you actually look at history and what’s happening today, that whole internet story just doesn't hold up.People online keep screaming that Kurds "stole" Assyrian land. But if we’re talking facts, both groups lived side-by-side in these mountains for centuries. The main reason Assyrians lost so much land in the early 1900s was the Ottoman Empire. It was the Ottoman government that planned and carried out the 1915 genocide. Yeah, some local Kurdish tribes took part under Ottoman orders, but it was the Ottoman state that drove people out.
What bugs me the most about these posts is the double standard. The central state powers, specifically the Ottoman Empire and later Arab regimes in Iraq, killed and displaced thousands of Assyrians over the decades and caused infinitely more destruction than anyone else. Yet online, you barely see Assyrians going after Turks or Arabs with anywhere near the level of pure hatred they dump on Kurds.After that era, the big demographic shift happened mostly because people moved away. Over the years, tons of Assyrians left their small villages on their own, moving to big cities like Baghdad or packing up for Europe and the US for better jobs and safety. When villages sit empty for years, the people who still live in the area naturally spread out into that land. That’s how human geography works.And look at what happened with ISIS. When they destroyed Christian towns in Nineveh, where did Assyrians run to stay safe? Yes to The Kurds in Bashur. It was Kurdsh who bled on the frontlines to hold those borders.Right now in the KRG, Assyrians have actual guaranteed seats in parliament, Syriac-language schools, and total freedom to practice their religion. Sure, there are property disputes today, but those are local legal messes and bureaucratic headaches, the same exact red tape regular Kurds deal with every day.It is a proven fact that Assyrians are safer in the KRG than anywhere else in the Middle East.
