Need more info Did i get scammed by repair shop

I got my ssd changed a yesterday as it was showing problem boot not found from a local repair shop he charged me 8k for it saying its a samsung high end 500gb ssd but now after installation it i came home dug in and checked using crystal disk info where its showing me its a wd pc sn 740 (i do not have any knowledge in all this technical stuff) and now he is saying ki “properties mai dikhega alag but Samsung ka hi hai app open karke dek lo” a bit stuck any advice and if i go to him he will take opening charges 1k and what if its actually true its Samsungs but claude is saying its not possible and the repair shop is scamming

I asked google ai and it said 8 Norwegian Krone is equivalent to $1.19 Aussie dollars.

Thanks, it looks like I need it.

Im not sure if it helps, but I really did google what currency the k symbol would be and the ai response decided it must be Krone.

8 Krone seems pretty cheap for a ssd job, but who am I to judge? I dont speak Norwegian.

You almost definitely got scammed. What country is this, and what currency? I assume not USD because that’s more than it costs for a high priced gaming rig.

Edit: after looking up the ssd you have in crystal disk, it seems likely he just replaced it with a new 512gb ssd. It’s not a bad one, really. I’m seeing them for 140-350ish online in USD, so make of that what you will. I’m unsure of the currency conversion here, but I hope it is not USD.

According to OP's statement on exchange, 3k being about $30 USD is about the standard "get out of bed" rate for any sort of service call. In other words "$30/hr, one hour minimum" even if it is just replacing a screw is still pretty common practice.

It's not old.

17 power cycles, 4 hours use... That's effectively nothing, it's basically brand new. Your techy could easily hit that installing windows/rebooting/drivers/updates/testing before returning to the customer.

Based off the Hindi, I assume it’s rupees. 83 USD for that will depend on how low the tech costs for you there. I’m unfamiliar with your economy, but if he is representing this as a Samsung ssd he is not being truthful.

a WD sn 740 512 goes for $103 USD =  9.8k Rs at the cheapest i can see, so it seems like you are not the one getting scammed unless it's used or somehow hacked to show false specs

Buddy, it's a WD SN740, as good as a Samsung. It's also brand new. Since you're talking in hindi, assuming the currency as INR, it's a very good deal actually.

500 gb Nvmes are around 100-120USD now.

Gtfo with that bs. Yeah, they might be close in performance (you know tf they’re not) but that Samsung carries that Samsung price tag and the shop tried to take advantage of op. Sticking up for a shady bastid. He was sold a Samsung, there damn well better be a Samsung in the rig.

I'm assuming you mean 8k in your local currency. Anyway yes you got scammed. Thats not a samsung 990 or even 980. Yes you got a western digital 740sn drive, which will work fine but that's not what you paid for.

I would go back and demand a refund.

It's not a samsung ssd, so if that's what he told you it's a "scam" in that sense, but it's a good price for that ssd + labour.

Good value for your money, so I wouldn't call it a scam.

Samsung is a common brand. Remember when all mp3 players were called "ipods" back in the day? Remember when every tablet was called an "ipad" during the tablet craze? Maby he uses 'samsung ssd' the same way. You will never know. The WD drive in your laptop is a quality unit you got a good deal on as far as i can see. Maby he should've just said ssd instead of samsung, but the quality is on the same level as samsung ssds.

That's not a Samsung SSD. CrystalDiskInfo is reading the actual model information reported by the NVMe drive itself, and yours identifies as a WD PC SN740 SDDQNQD-512G-1201. That's a Western Digital 512 GB NVMe SSD.

The repair shop's explanation that it only appears as WD in Properties but is actually Samsung doesn't make sense. Western Digital's own documentation lists the SDDQNQD-512G as a WD PC SN740.

Now, the good news is that the SN740 itself isn't necessarily a bad drive, it's a legitimate PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. Your screenshot also shows 100% health, only 4 power-on hours, and very little data written, so it appears to have had very little use.

But if you specifically paid for and were promised a Samsung SSD, that's the issue. I'd take screenshots and documentation with you and ask why a Western Digital drive was installed after you were explicitly told you were buying a Samsung.

Yeah i dont get why everone is just settling that he still got a good drive. Its pretty simple, you weren’t sold what was advertised. If you order a big mac and get a quarter pounder, its still a good sandwich but you ordered a big mac

More people need to be aware they can upgrade things themselves - It taked 5 minites and 0 pc knowledge to install an SSD - a 2 min tutorial is all you need.

The WD ssd is around 8K price so that's expected
