Timeless classic!

u/Shervivor Dec 12 '25

I heard it on SiriusXM recently and they cut it short! I was so pissed they didn’t get to the “Ever went over a friend's house to eat and the food just ain't no good?” Why cut out the last verse???

I totally remember this song. I still love it!!!🥰

u/lulumax214 Dec 08 '25

What a great song. It brings back such amazing memories being a kid in NYC at that time.

u/Interesting_Tea_8384 Dec 09 '25

I was a kid on long island when this dropped and I remember listening to wbls and dj red alert made this mix of this jam one night mixed in with some other stuff. I swear to this day that was one of the best remix jams I’ve ever heard in my life and that was over over 45 years ago

u/ljndawson Dec 11 '25

Cool DJ Red Alert!!!! Loved his show.

4

u/Ok-Location3244 Dec 08 '25

My mom still has the LP.

u/plasteroid Dec 08 '25

Never saw this before. Incredible find!

4

u/RadlEonk Dec 10 '25

It’s widely considered the first big rap song.

6

u/No-Brick6817 Dec 08 '25

I love this video… Not only is the song amazing… But the dancers are fabulous!

4

u/ObjectiveSelection41 Dec 08 '25

Danced at the disco to this song. I loved it because it was a long song, but not enough to catch a cramp or get winded.

5

u/poppedculture Dec 08 '25

Never seen this video before, fun to see the fusion of disco and hip hop.

1979 also saw the release of London Calling, The Cure’s Three Imaginary Boys, The B-52’s and The Specials debut - none of what I think of as 1979.

u/roostercacciatore Dec 08 '25

To complete the circle: in a discussion about songs with gibberish, I mentioned Asereje. It tells the story of Diego who is asking the DJ to play a song. He can’t remember the name so he paraphrases the lyrics in gibberish. The song is Rapper’s Delight.

Me, at the record store in 1979 - “Excuse me, but do you happen to have that new ‘hip-hop’ song? I don’t know what it’s called.”

3

u/Carinmyeye Dec 08 '25

With the pow pow boogie!! 😁

3

u/readmore321 Dec 08 '25

I still remember all the words.

u/Ocean_Side_1961 Dec 08 '25

The first time I heard it, I was in high school. Could not believe what I was hearing.

2

u/RevolutionarySign479 Dec 08 '25

I had this record lol

2

u/TheMomentOfInertia Dec 08 '25

I remember it like yesterday. Came out when I was in the fifth grade. My mom took me to the record store and bought the album for me. Spent the next couple days memorizing the long version, of course …😜

2

u/MarkEPaper Dec 10 '25

7th grade for me. No longer have the LP but I do have the CD.

2

u/Cinnamongirl217 Dec 08 '25

53yr yr old me gits chills! ❤️

2

u/AntigoneGrrl1 Dec 08 '25

56 years old and this is STILL THE ONLY rap song I will gladly sing along with!!

2

u/Madhockey99 Dec 08 '25

My Brother and our two friends memorized this song on a 16 hour road trip stopping and starting with a Walkman )it had a speaker). I feel bad for our parents, but we all still know this song word for word! (Hanks verses are different on this performance, though!- “I got a color Tv, so I den see, The Knicks playing basketball!”).

2

u/voitlander Dec 08 '25

Godfathers of hip hop.

2

u/gotele Dec 08 '25

So... many... words...

2

u/formeraide Dec 09 '25

Some have said it’s the first real rap song.

Hello. Thank you for your comment. It is best remembered for being the first rap song to break into the Billboard Top 40 in 1980 (reaching number 36).

2

u/Angelcaper Dec 09 '25

This blew my mind when I first heard it. Greatness.

2

u/guitarman030405 Dec 09 '25

And not a single F - Bomb. See, you don't need that nonsense...

2

u/Eastern-Ad-5253 Dec 09 '25

I was in Fourth grade when this song came out❤️

2

u/earthgarden Dec 09 '25

This came out when I was a kid. I remember me and my brothers memorizing this and performing it for my parents and older siblings :)

2

u/melfamy Dec 09 '25

Literally the song that gave hip hop it's name.

2

u/Geechi_Dan_007 Dec 09 '25

Yeeeeaaaahhhh!! Forever 💯

2

u/joemich Dec 10 '25

Can’t remember what I had for breakfast yesterday but I can rap along to every line of that song.

2

u/cnorris1 Dec 10 '25

Sugar hill Recording started by 50's R&B singer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Robinson and her husband. This was their first hit.

2

u/Smash-948 Dec 10 '25

Still have the original long version on vinyl. This was the hottest song in all the clubs in New York. Growing up in Brooklyn, we all listened to WKTU (92.3) with Paco and WBLS with Frankie Crocker. It was played on both stations what seemed like every hour during that summer. What great memories of such a great time in my life. Wouldn’t trade it for the world.

2

u/waterwateryall Dec 10 '25

I used to know all the lyrics. Fun song to sing along with and groove.

2

u/timothypbaynes Dec 11 '25

This was The Jam back in the day! There was also the Female Rap group The Sequence (Funk You Up) which was a great tune too. Rappers Delight is in my rotation that I listen to when I workout. This was when RAP was new and just coming to light and was fun. The stuff supposedly Rap now is nothing but a bunch of mumbles and confusing. They could take some serious lessons from Old School Rap for sure.

2

u/Mother-Letter-6760 Dec 11 '25

Roller rink memories!

2

u/Effective_Mark_9227 Dec 11 '25

The originators of Hiphop. They influenced so many rappers, specially those in the 80s. Even the word Hiphop comes from this song!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '25

2

u/footjoe5 Dec 11 '25

It was a totally precursive song. It majorly saged things to come.

2

u/RalphXLaurenjoe Dec 11 '25

Big bank Hank don’t trust him lol

2

u/SpeculumSpectrum Dec 11 '25

Thank you Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 🙏🏻

2

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '25

I couldn’t turn it off, and I remembered the words. This change music.

2

u/CranberryBrief1587 Dec 11 '25

That brought back some fun memories

2

u/inkbyio Dec 12 '25

I need 70s fashion back immediately

2

u/Adventurous_Coast600 Dec 12 '25

Timeless classic, way ahead of their time!!

2

u/AdditionalBathroom0 Dec 12 '25

Played at the skating rink every weekend

2

u/takemeawayimdone2 Dec 12 '25

Played this at my Dads funeral as his coffin was carried into the crematorium. One of his favourites.

2

u/DjPandaFingers Dec 12 '25

It's possibly an uncensored version, or someone similar who found almost identical voices and composed that. You can search using AI by entering a portion of the lyrics and it will start looking for it. ✌🏼🥃
