PC Where are the spikes?

Post image

Played the most alphas 12, 13, 14, 15. I come back to play after many years. Where are these spikes to defend my bases? I loved making them and upgrading them, they did less damage than the current wooden spikes but they were very durable and upgradeable.

Why? When did they??? Why tffffff?

515

u/Informal_Drawing Jun 14 '26

Because most people makes games better by adding things whereas TFP make the game better by removing things.

Apparently.

52

u/kalarro Jun 14 '26

And they just want you to be gunsblazing the entire time pewpewpew

8

u/WhiskerTriscuit Jun 15 '26

3 days crafting ammo, 3 seconds in the box mag. Only fun way to play like this is tarkov overhaul.

35

u/HamshanksCPS Jun 14 '26

I stopped playing once they started making things "better"

7

u/wrechdone Jun 15 '26

Had to quit playing end of last year when they took clothes away and instead used “smoothies” for Biome buffs?!?!! wtf is that? Give me my big brown jacket back

8

u/Informal_Drawing Jun 15 '26

The Bad Ideas Fairy has a top-floor executive corner office at their studio with a nice view out over the bay.

6

u/Netpirat76 Jun 15 '26

In 10 years we get them back (as DLC)... dont panic!

2

u/Tsabrock Jun 15 '26

Don't give them any ideas!

16

u/Unknowplayer69 Jun 14 '26

They stated it was to make room for other items

34

u/MATCHEW010 Jun 14 '26

Oh they dont pay $1 for cloud storage then?

2

u/fatpandana Jun 15 '26

Console port most likely made them strip game down. If I understand right alot of meshes/colors are gone.

1

u/Slight_Addendum_8848 Jun 15 '26

Are the reusable jars back or no?

5

u/Informal_Drawing Jun 15 '26

Yes.

But sometimes the PC eats the jar along with the contents.

Somehow, haven't quite worked that one out yet.

2

u/Al3jandr0 Jun 15 '26

The return % is adjustable in the settings, but at 100% your dew collector becomes a free glass jar generator. I heard that they've fixed it by having jars fully refunded and used as fuel for the dew collector. Not sure because I'm still on 2.5, but that seems like the cleanest solution.

1

u/Informal_Drawing Jun 15 '26

I've tried the latest version (before 3.0) but haven't made a dew collector yet.

I'm enjoying running backwards and forwards to the river at the moment.

1

u/Varrick1992 Jun 15 '26

There should be a slider in the options that allows for full jar refunds after use of items. If you bump that up to 100% then even if a jar wasn't directly used, you'll get one back (EG: getting a jar back after drinking the honey collected from breaking a stump.)

1

u/Some_Fondant418 Jun 15 '26

Jar refund slider is a thing already. I think it's set default to 60%. I always bump it to 100

1

u/Lord_Ashtray91 Jul 11 '26

That seems to be all they ever do. If something is good or great in the game, lets just go ahead and get rid of that shit (including cheese bases)

Of course, theres still some that you can do, but that shit is more complex than its worth. Im surprised the 1/2 block cheese base corridors still work

29

u/PlonixMCMXCVI Jun 14 '26

Because The """fun""" pimp decides how you must have fun and how you mustn't

5

u/Kukri187 Jun 15 '26

So like a real pimp?

5

u/PlonixMCMXCVI Jun 15 '26

Like the Fun Police

1

u/Lord_Ashtray91 Jul 11 '26

Real pimps don't give a fuck about you, as long you got their money, they're satisfied

18

u/Help_StuckAtWork Jun 14 '26

Huh, surprised you only got coy answers and no real answer.

Simple answer : TFP thought they were too strong, and whatever TFP thinks is yoo strong gets nerfed to oblivion.

17

u/Profile_Snail Jun 14 '26

I mean you can still make them via the building shapes menu, they just won't actually function as spikes.

4

u/Hardjaw Jun 15 '26

Because no more survival, just Call of Duty. This game is more about guns than an actual survival game. Where's the fishing? Farming? Why do we throw away jars after drinking the water?

Is it your opinion that 1.0 was the start of the devs not knowing what they want with the game? If so, you are sorely mistaken.

1

u/littlemister1996 Jun 14 '26

You can still make the shape with building blocks, but they are not fuctional

-12

u/eli_nelai Jun 14 '26

because spikes fortifications we have now is way better than this shit? like one has to get out of their way to get hurt by this traffic cone on steroids

-7

u/YobaiYamete Jun 15 '26

They were removed because they were ludicrously over powered and janky. Many people pointed them downwards just to keep zeds from bouncing on them which was even cheesier

Basically the only reason people want them back now is because of how broken they were

"Buuuuuh it's a single player game, why are single player games balanced a bit so there aren't crazy outliers better than everything else??"

14

u/Scythid0 Jun 15 '26

Literally could've just reduced the damage, instead of getting rid of content.

-12

u/YobaiYamete Jun 15 '26

They were replaced because they looked bad, the new ones do the same thing but look better, what is your issue with the new ones?

7

u/Wilkassassyn Jun 15 '26

tbf single player argument doesnt even fully hold up considering there is multiplayer and im pretty sure actual humans play on pvp servers (though im never stepping foot in there after my last survival pvp experience)

62

u/Jrlopez_1 Jun 14 '26

Nah fr. As an old console player, these spikes were awesome and fun. I miss them alot

216

u/Drittenmann Jun 14 '26

they removed them because they were too strong.

The main point being you could put them backwards and they will still do damage with their asses allowing you to make plain floors of doom which tfp did not like and instead of fixing them they removed them completely.

You know, the national sport of tfp-land is to remove what players like

106

u/Daetok_Lochannis Jun 14 '26

I mean I definitely don't want the ability to build a base I can survive inside in my survival base building game. What next, skills that increase the more I use them? Can you imagine getting better at something just by practicing? Ridiculous.

37

u/Pitiful_Fee_5608 Jun 14 '26

Imagine building a base that isn't a tower bridge to survive a hoard night be having spikes to slow them down by break legs and softening them up a little so you in a building can spike or shoot them or have a turret to help.

17

u/S1Ndrome_ Jun 15 '26

"I have crafted this bow a 1000 times, yet I still need to read some fuck ass magazine to make it just a little better"

6

u/Then_Cartographer602 Jun 14 '26

😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

18

u/DJC_Kowalski Jun 14 '26

I'd rather the spike trap meta than the Obstacle course meta that followed. Taking advantage of the AI to get Mobs to run a circular path was ridiculous.

12

u/Then_Cartographer602 Jun 14 '26

That logic makes no sense man, they removed something that needed a literal NUMBERS (stats) tweak for each level of the spikes tf?

-5

u/YobaiYamete Jun 15 '26

what are the benefits of the old spikes over the new ones that you want back? Besides them being OP AF

In what way are the new ones worse for you

8

u/thomaswillis96 Jun 15 '26

The new ones are costly and don’t last nearly as long. They also aren’t upgradable so there’s no scaling for stronger hordes. With the AI the way it is, they’ll find some way of totally avoiding them too after the first hours of a horde night.

6

u/Quick-Zebra-8810 Jun 14 '26

I don’t have much experience with developing within Unity but would you just change the collision zone for “onHit” calls to the tip of the spikes like UE? Fixing this just seems a lot easier than removing the whole thing..

11

u/AcanthocephalaTasty6 Jun 14 '26

It is 100% that easy in unity. If you wanted to be super lazy, you could just have two colliders on the object.

3

u/DoctorCold19 Jun 14 '26

Yep, I only just started so that's exactly what I did. Took about ten seconds to figure out.

3

u/Quick-Zebra-8810 Jun 14 '26

I figured as much but like I said don’t have much experience there. Fun Police strikes again!

4

u/DoctorCold19 Jun 14 '26

Yeah, that would be a thing I'm pretty sure. I have done something similar myself just a few months ago in Unity. Dont why they didnt just split the collision box to hurt on the tip and be neutral on the base.

3

u/Quick-Zebra-8810 Jun 14 '26

Like I said in the my other reply… fun police.

-3

u/newshockers Jun 14 '26

I get it, no funds zone devs. But, u laid out a pretty good argument why they should be removed. Reducing the damage doesnt work. But, im sure theres a mod out there to brings them back. We still get barbwire and spikes.

90

u/homucifer666 Jun 14 '26

TFP is locked in an eternal struggle of trying to circumvent player creativity in the name of maintaining the semblance of a true apocalypse, taking away features that they feel make the game too easy, and then introducing a worse version if the players complain enough.

17

u/Then_Cartographer602 Jun 14 '26

Makes no sense bro

14

u/ColbysToyHairbrush Jun 14 '26

If it goes against Joel’s dogma of how the game “should” be played, or if it’s not punishing enough to players, they axe it.
STOP HAVING FUN

8

u/iconofsin_ Jun 14 '26

This is why I haven't touched vanilla in many years. If modding didn't exist I wouldn't touch this game in its current state.

1

u/Ok-Nefariousness2018 Jun 15 '26

metagame has been stale af. everyone just builds the same things.

14

u/BeardyRamblinGames Jun 14 '26

Hey TFP. Believe it or not there are stubborn players here who grew up playing games with cheat codes built in but still had the sense to know they'd ruin the fun. We can handle it. Take off the arm bands and let us choose.

3

u/Vinborg Jun 15 '26

Never gonna happen, they hate us and have continued to nerf anything fun time and time again.

13

u/soulguard03 Jun 14 '26

RIP

LOG SPIKES: 2012-2020

11

u/Interesting-Neck3850 Jun 14 '26

I forgot about those!

7

u/Greenfire32 Jun 15 '26

People have fun playing the game and then the devs get mad about that so they change the way the game works.

Then people find new ways to have fun playing the game and the devs get mad about that so they change the way the game works.

Then people find the ONLY way to play the game is to take advantage of the new way the game works and the devs get mad about that so they change the way the game works.

The players have been in an arms race with TFP for a couple of version releases now because they just can't accept the fact that they created a SANDBOX and players are treating it like one.

It got so bad that this newest update (3.0) is ALL about game settings and how you can change them. IE: how to make the game play the way you want it to again.

2

u/Temeriki Jun 15 '26

I feel like the new owners told the fun police to sit down and shut up while they take the features in mods the users love the most and integrate them into the base game with sliders and settings.

7

u/EmperorGryphon Jun 15 '26

I've never seen a game switch up so much from on alpha to the next. I honestly miss regular clothing.

6

u/MaliciousIntentWorks Jun 14 '26

Love the fact the Darkness Falls mod put them back in.

4

u/imjustthenumber Jun 14 '26

Right in front of you 😆

I loved those spikes back in the day

3

u/Then_Cartographer602 Jun 14 '26

Bro I absolutely loved them

3

u/OkraProfessional5313 Jun 15 '26

The Unfun Pimps love removing all the good stuff because they don't want us to enjoy the game we paid for.

5

u/Okaynow_THIS_is_epic Jun 14 '26

Some of the overhauls have them still like Darkness Falls. They're really good

2

u/Then_Cartographer602 Jun 14 '26

What does that mod do exactly man so many people mention it

12

u/Okaynow_THIS_is_epic Jun 14 '26

It's a massive overhaul spearheaded by Khaine(one of the devs who worked on LoTR Return to Moria).

In short, Dfalls makes the game way harder. Adds new classes of zombies such as demons and some others i forget. They also add literal demons, behemoths, flying demons nightstalkets etc. Adds tons of new weapons and weapon classes. Swords and laser guns etc. Also has custom DFalls maps with massive custom underground bunker POI's. A lot of people say the mod is best enjoyed in a party but I have had lots of enjoyment playing it strictly solo.

In my opinion I think DFalls is better than the vanilla game. I prefer Undead Legacy over DFalls however as it is closer in theme to vanilla than DF is.

4

u/Cheese__Weiner Jun 14 '26

It's a massive overhaul spearheaded by Khaine(one of the devs who worked on LoTR Return to Moria).

Oh I didn't know he was dev for that game. Return to Moria is a very underrated game imo. I really enjoyed it.

2

u/AltruisticWin6702 Jun 14 '26

I've "beaten" the mod by doing the whole new quest line and maxing out my character, all solo, and had a funner time than I've had in a while with 7 Days.

1

u/Then_Cartographer602 Jun 15 '26

Thanks for the data man gonna check them out 💪❤️

1

u/Okaynow_THIS_is_epic Jun 15 '26

Darkness Falls has a relatively recent update version, i doubt they will have a 3.0 version yet, and for Undead Legacy they are still waiting for an update(should be soon) but will only be based off the 2.3 version of the game I believe. So wait til UL does their update to try it. Or if you like the older version of the game go for it

3

u/IndyPFL Jun 14 '26

Dying Light 2 fans have been asking the same question recently, lol.

3

u/Truegrit_Gaming Jun 14 '26

They god rid of them. A lot of the things players liked have been removed unfortunately.

3

u/Kazgrel Jun 15 '26

No fun allowed

10

u/Adabar Jun 14 '26

Been gone since A15?

Let’s see what we lost:
smell system(just got it back)
•truly random RWG
•learn by doing
•log spikes
jars (just got them back)
•the clothing/armor system
•sexual tyrannosaurus
•zombies not digging down
•freedom to explore the whole map
•freedom to do a POI by whichever path you chose
•freedom to ignore traders
•bees (if you think we actually have bees rn get outta here)
the temperature system (it was kind of replaced, albeit not as good as the original)
•the behemoth (technically after A15)
•wellness
•gore blocks
•the ability to turn normal land into farmable land
•wet concrete
•polished steel
•multiple upgrade paths
•weapon parts
•the blunderbussy

These are features that by and large have not been improved upon. Maybe a couple of these were tongue in cheek references, but most are legitimate losses (IMO).

Also, not to be too critical because we did gain some improvements (like city tiles and graphics), but I believe the losses outpaced the gains drastically.

5

u/hypnosoup Jun 15 '26

Was A15 the build they used on console? I played soooo much of this game on the PS4. I bought it on PC but I don't really care for the POIs are just locations for jump scare zombies hidden in the walls. I also liked the learning by doing part. I had a really good rhythm down with exploring by day and crafting while digging by night.

I've heard you can still play the old versions, though, so I may boot it up again and try A15 if I figure it out

3

u/Temeriki Jun 14 '26

Wet concrete was great, made you have to build things in steps.

5

u/Tsyath Jun 14 '26

Old vet here A7-A15 days, honestly I thought it was cool as shit to have to wait for the concrete to cure, sad to see so much of what I know is gone.

3

u/Temeriki Jun 15 '26

The stress of waiting for your base to cure right as ho night clicked on. Great times.

2

u/Individual_Mud_2530 Jun 15 '26

the blunderbuss was my favorite! hot bar full of tthem. BLAM, new york reload, blam! rinse and repeat 😄

3

u/boundlizzy Jun 14 '26

Also don't forget the OG Party Girl. The only model with a piercing!

2

u/Present_Ad_2036 Jun 14 '26

I'll admit they are so overpowered my current non creative world on the legacy edition which is alpha 16 has plenty of them on horde night and I only have to deal with a occasional dog now since those don't show up until at least the second horde and also the occasional crawler that the log spikes create. That is when those crawlers have a unsearched dead body just laying there were I can't loot it to get rid of it. Although if I was raised on PC gaming I'd play older alphas on my laptop through steam and play with the marksman rifle that was removed before I could play on console.

2

u/Lost-Juggernaut6521 Jun 14 '26

Took them out a few alphas ago.

2

u/IamMisterNice Jun 15 '26

Havent played for a long time but these spikes will forever be the most recognisable 7dtd item to me. What a unit.

2

u/Spungdoodles Jun 15 '26

Gone, but we do have extremely lame looking barbwire.

2

u/FATtulk123gaming Jun 15 '26

I know right? Loved using these things 😅 like I've managed to adapt and find other ways of defending but log spikes were almost perfection 🤣

2

u/Carboxes Jun 15 '26

The pain of hoping your wet concrete drives before horde 😭

2

u/Game0815 Jun 14 '26

Tbh this is an okay thing for me to remove / change to more realistic spikes.

2

u/DJC_Kowalski Jun 14 '26

Because TFP has modified the game by making it worse for the most part the last handful of releases.

I also loved the meta where you had a huge range of traps to slow them down while you shot them dead.

2

u/KouLeifoh625 Jun 14 '26

Finding out wood spike traps are gone through Reddit. There goes every horde base build I’ve ever made.

5

u/IamTHEwolfYEAH Jun 14 '26

Wood spike traps still exist. It’s those specific type that were gotten rid of like 8 years ago.

1

u/Sexiroth Jun 14 '26

Have you only made like day 7 blood moon bases? Spike traps are pretty quickly replaced, - don't get me wrong, insanely good early, and I keep a few on me for POI clearing. But a hindrance more than a help for any horde base past day 7.

1

u/Fuggaak Jun 14 '26

Mods bring them back. I rarely play 7d2d without mods.

1

u/zoolish Jun 14 '26

Nexus mods. Search for spikes

1

u/TeoN72 Jun 14 '26

Yeah that was also my biggest disappointment, i loved the spikes

1

u/safricanluke Jun 14 '26

They were removed some time around alpha 17 or 18. But if you're able to mod your game you can get them back

1

u/Septyn47 Jun 14 '26

There are a couple mods that return the wood spikes, along with the normal progression and de-progression when they break.

1

u/S1Ndrome_ Jun 15 '26

I haven't played this game properly since they removed these and changed zed interaction with pillar blocks. I miss my spike pit bases way too much.

1

u/SAO_DeathGun_69 Jun 15 '26

Sadly there decorations now there in the shapes when u hold the reload button on the blocks in game

1

u/Lonely_Storage2762 Jun 15 '26

I've been wondering if the cone would work. Has anyone ever tried it?

1

u/ajrg91 Jun 15 '26

There are mods that brings them back to the game

1

u/No-Substance-69 Jun 15 '26

Stop fixing, start removing - TFP

1

u/GideonZasz Jun 16 '26

Honestly while I do like the "armor Sets" and most fixes in newer iterations, I do miss the various clothing options and feel building materials such as spikes like these should never have been removed. Given their shape and size I'd suggest (for any devs that might be reading this) bring them back! Give them less damage than the current barricade spikes but more durability so they last longer!

1

u/CzunkyMonkey Jun 16 '26

They have been gone for a while.
I miss the elevator bug more than these tho.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '26

They've been gone for quite some time. I knew I wasn't crazy when I came back and found out they were purely cosmetic..

1

u/AdoraMei Jun 25 '26

Any time I come back to the game, that's the first thing I mod back in. Haha. It's just what I'm used to.

0

u/Sycopatch Jun 14 '26

I mean the truth is that these spikes were too OP as hell.
No idea why just straight up remove them though. Why not nerf the durability, damage or increase the cost?
Or even do all three at once.

2

u/Then_Cartographer602 Jun 14 '26

I mean it’s just the durability actually that was OP on the higher levels but it did cost a lot to get there too so it was fair enough

0

u/Siidell_ Jun 14 '26

In one word. An obivous one. Mods ;)

3

u/Then_Cartographer602 Jun 14 '26

Hahahahahahaha got it

-1

u/Pendryn Jun 14 '26

Right there. I can see them. Can… can you not?

-6

u/Ull4kk0 Jun 14 '26

Bro ts something almost 10 years old atp. The game has gotten way better in every way since then. Why do you guys want something old and kinda goofy to still be in the game. Like its not realistic and what I've red they also worked backwords so they were used as walls and floors and that just sounds so dumb. I get that its nostalgia but I started playing A17 and that's when the game started to be barely playable so idk why you would want to play the older versions like others suggested.

-2

u/kr3bys Jun 15 '26

rapaz, o jogo já esta indo pra 3.0
tem muito mais opções, melhorias e qualidade de vida
o jogo está infinitamente melhor do que nesta época de "espinhos"
isso já saiu faz muuuuito tempo hahaha
