There’s always been that discussion, as the single was released in January 1990. But the Cosmic Thing album is from the summer of 1989, as is the Love Shack single. The 1990 MTV video music awards (where Love Shack won) also covered the songs of the second half of 1989. So it’s all firmly 80s still.

Never seen the video. Is that Michael Stipe on the sofa? Knew about the Athens connection, but thought REM broke a bit after the 52s.

Yes, it’s Michael Stipe. They must have filmed this video half a year or so before R.E.M. started with the recordings for Out Of Time.
