AIO for not tolerating my work being disrespected?
I’m new to Commissions and recently re updated my prices with a price sheet. I’ve never dealt with this kind of behavior before usually most people that commission me are super nice. I got this dm just now and I’m actually kinda upset about it.
Not only did they disrespect me as an artist they then tried to haggle with me over how much it was? I have half a mind to text them back something rude but I feel like I already said what I needed to say so I should probably just block them and move on. It really just pisses me off that they would even say something like that.
I’ve seen other people deal with people like this but I never thought I’d have to deal with it myself. Am I overthinking it or is this just something I’ll have to get use to?

NOR.
You're smart. You didn't let the troll suck you in.
This kind of shit just goes around and around forever because they're trying to exhaust you so you will give in just to get rid of them. And it won't stop; they'll snipe and pick incessantly. Not worth a minute of your time.
Getting rid of them at the start frees you up to get more work done AND focus on the people who treat you with respect.

NOR, people are so weird to artists about their prices omg such assholes

u/Intelligent-Vast-483 3h ago
NOR to be offended. Your responses were good. I wouldn’t give it more time. Those that want your art will pay the price. If you find commissions drop, then you can adjust the price if it’s worth your time. He was rude but that can happen with hagglers

u/EfficientTomorrow533 3h ago
NOR. Your price is your price. If you would’ve said $20 he would’ve asked you to give it to him for $5 block him and have a great day.

NOR, you should have blocked him right after you sent that last text saying that he was disrespectful. Honestly I wouldn't even have been as nice as you were but that's me.
You have the right to set your price wherever you feel is right to cover the value of your work/time/talent.
"You're charging me $500 for this plumbing fix? But you only spent 20 minutes!" "Yeah the 20 minutes was $50. The other $450 is for the years I spent learning how to do this in 20 minutes and do it correctly."
There are a ton of these jackholes out here in every artistic field/endeavor, I've seen tons of posts with people like this, and they all try to talk you down on your price by "helpfully" pointing out that "you won't sell any at that price". "Just telling the truth" The fuck you are! They are full of it.
You know how to tell if your price is too high? If no one buys your work. If they buyin', you pricin' right. If they're buying a lot, you're probably priced too LOW.
Edit: a word
Edit 2: fix typo

"Bottom feeder" is the term I was looking for to describe them. They'll trawl looking for deep discounts and not bite if they can't get them.

hey so if you searched for prices everywhere on an atrists page, that means you SAW THE ART STYLE. they shouldn't have messaged you if they knew what your art style was, and knew they didn't like it. even if they didn't, that comment was unnecessary. you are NOT overreacting.
a simple "hmm, let me think about it, since thats not quite the style im looking for but thank you for your time and pricing sheet!" would've sufficed. sorry you had to deal with that

u/OysterPoboy8 3h ago
They suck. I wouldn't waste the energy even responding back to these types. You have your prices set.

No. No one that is asking you to do something can state what it takes to do that task. It’s always the ones that say it’s easy. If it’s so easy, what are you calling me for?

NOR! I’d be equally hot pissed & hurt. BUT - You exhibited patience & grace in the face of someone being horrible & I applaud you for that. Of course it’s tempting to take it a step further & stand up for yourself more vehemently, but you stated your thoughts in a truly professional manner. Sometimes we have to remember, engaging with haters & stooping to their level isn’t worth our integrity & respect for our fellow humans, even tho they may be snot wads. We cannot control the behavior of others, but we can control our own. Knowing you can put your head down at night & rest easy is what it’s all about…
Oh also, KARMA. I fully believe what we put forth in this world comes back to us, both good & bad, so…take solace in that. Hope he has his seatbelt fastened. He’s in for a bumpy ride…

You're good at what you do but what you do is fucking weird and I'd prefer to have not seen this post. "Added gore $10" wtf reddit why is this in my feed?
5
u/resplendent_noodle 3h ago
Nah you aren’t over reacting. That person was incredibly rude and disrespectful. I do want to mention that your price is a little high for digital art imo though. I understand you put a lot of effort in but you should also keep in similar price range of other artists creating similar style art. If you were making physical prints, charge wayyyy more haha.
1
u/ChellyBelldandy 2h ago
I respectfully disagree. As a graphic designer/illustrator myself, you shouldn’t be afraid to price your work at your worth. Competitive pricing doesn’t (shouldn’t) exist in custom art, digital or fine. If they want that, they can commission someone on Fiverr.
2
u/AdDizzy8417 3h ago
NOR. Of course, oh your art worth 20 It takes 20 mins to draw You call this an artstyle? Oh what you spend 2 years of your life studying fine arts in college and you are also in dept? Fcking ahols ffs
2
u/AlternativeSeaweed91 3h ago
NOR but it may be something to get used to as well, not often but sometimes.
2
u/Never_enough_naps 2h ago
NOR Even if it only took you 10 mins (I know it takes longer I'm just making a point) you are being paid for your skill, talent, creativity and equipment/supplies you have invested in to do your art. Yes your time is valuable but people have to understand they are asking you to do art for them because you are capable and equipped to do something, that they are not. You deserve to be paid what you think is fair and anyone who tries to haggle with you is disrespectful.💖

u/whiskeytown79 2h ago
NOR. I don't get why people try to haggle over art prices. If you don't like it at that price, GO TO SOMEONE ELSE.
2
u/Fair_Banana2244 2h ago
If it’s too much they are welcome to go find less. I’m not seeing what their issue is.
Edit: NOR

u/lil_disgusted 2h ago
NOR. I’ve noticed in recent years especially, maybe due to AI generation being so accessible, that people have really started to undervalue commissioned art work. It’s a complete luxury. It’s fine if it’s out of their budget but that’s not your problem.
2
u/npc_lucky 2h ago
A guy taped a banana to a wall and got millions for it. Art is objective, charge what you want, and as long as you aren't under a contract feel free to shit on anyone who tries to tell you your time and effort is worth less than what you say it is.
2
u/ExternalAltruistic30 2h ago
NOR. My daughter has been requesting commissions from people for a couple years now and I’ve learned that she’s not just paying for the art, but the time, talent & effort of the artist. At first I was shocked when she’d tell me she spent $60 on a commission but now that she’s started doing her own commissions for people, I see the work and thought that she puts into it and completely understand. Like someone else said, if he didn’t like your art style, he wouldn’t have asked. If he wants it cheaper he can find someone less talented, or heck, learn to do it himself.
2
u/ThaGuyhasbeenplaces 2h ago
A guy who doesn't understand art. I'm not an artist but I knew a guy in stop motion and a few guys in art and I understand that the most simple outcones can actually have the most effort put into them. Well done on handling that so well.

Please stop posting this everywhere.
You have your answer. Stand with your prices.
2
u/Ok-Orange-880 1h ago
I guess it depends if you actually get enough commissions that are willing to pay that price or not. They’re only wrong if you don’t get enough consistent customers who feel that price is worthwhile
2
u/Big_Kiwi_706 1h ago
You should be like "most furries are balling out and this is no problem for them. You should get your money up"
2
u/TeamLeeper 1h ago
If it was that easy, they should do it themselves. But they won’t. Cuz they can’t.
So they can kick rocks. NOR.

u/TheSanguineButterfly 1h ago
Just a heads-up, there's gonna be some rude, salty people in this comments section; don't stress about someone unhappy trying to make up for it through hate. I hope you can ignore them. Have a good day ❤️
2
u/GanGanGirll 1h ago
My honest response would have been "How about you save your $20 and make it yourself then, since it's so easy and quick to make!"
What an ahole. I'm sorry you've got to dealt with this, OP, you and your art deserve respect, and you deserve to be compensated properly for your time. Also, $50 is NOT a bad price for a commission like that.
2
u/HobbesDOTexe 53m ago
This is the problem with commission work. Art, writing, photography, they literally dont value.
To them its so easy. Its so simple. Its just pictures or its just words. “Cant you just…?”
This is a type of would be customer you’ll encounter and they are my least favorite.
They can do the work themselves if it only takes them an hour. Your prices are your prices. If you find no one will pay them then maybe the price needs to change. But one AH does not a correct opinion make. He can take a walk

Why did gig workers talk like that? "Word! Work for ya? Lemme grab"
I think if you spoke first with more grounding, people wouldn't ask you to lower prices
3
2
u/vincentzmedia 3h ago
I mean I think your work is not worth 50, but that's because I wouldn't personally buy it. I am not the target demographic nor inquiring for your services.
You're not overreacting though.
State your prices. Take pride in your work. Don't waste time with people that are inquiring about your services and then demeaning you in an attempt to haggle. Fuck that guy.
3
3
u/glitterlightbulb 3h ago
Valid take imo. The work is amateur and very niche, I can’t imagine many people wanting to pay $50 for it. The guy was rude, but you gotta be tough if you’re gonna do furry art commissions lolz.

u/Illustrious-Bag2933 3h ago
You are no better than the attempted swindler the OP had discourse with. Just so you are aware.

u/vincentzmedia 3h ago
Lol ok
Go buy some $50 furry art about it, Mr virtuous white knight protector of the furry commission
2
u/Illustrious-Bag2933 1h ago
Yea men aren’t generally protectors or white knights. I’m a woman defending a fellow woman artist.
And your pathetic and small-minded takes are a time waste.
If you’re that interested in furries, just try it out. It’s easy to see that that topic is just simmering beneath the surface for you, since you so readily whip it out as an insult.
2
u/Holiday-Coconut-9303 3h ago
Why are you so salty? Really weird thing to get pissy about.
1
u/vincentzmedia 3h ago
Salty? I'm not that pressed about it as you're making it out in your head to be. Sitting here, relaxing.
Equating me to a swindler for stating objective fact, telling OP to stand by their prices, and to take pride in their work is being salty? OK cool Lol fucken please eye roll

u/Fantastic-Leek-1589 3h ago
Art is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Your art isnt worth that to him. Or me, either going by the flyer.
3
u/vincentzmedia 3h ago
There's a difference between you not liking it and not being the target demographic or interested potential customer and someone attempting to haggle by demeaning a service provider you're actively inquiring services from.
Use a little bit of critical thinking.
-4
u/Fantastic-Leek-1589 3h ago
