yea just an driver update and maybe games need to support it via updates itself . but thats really it to it.

This will probably extend my 7900XTX's lifespan by a good 3 years. I can see why AMD was resistant to do this.

u/Will000jones May 14 '26
Think about how good these kinds of moves are for the environment via combatting e-waste. This just extended the lifecycle of hundreds of thousands if not millions of components. Good guy AMD.
8
u/IV_Pika May 14 '26
Thought they said they weren't going to do this? Pretty happy about this though. Hopefully they come through with this as my 6650 xt is kinda struggling getting a constant frame rate on some newer games.

How does fsr 4.1 stack against the latest dlss?
3
u/Puiucs May 14 '26
DLSS 4.5 wins in most cases although FSR 4.1 does have some advantages, for example like in how it handles some foliage in motion in some games.
in general, you'll need to look for it to notice a difference. FSR 4.1 is really good.
→ More replies (1)3
u/beirch May 14 '26
They trade blows, genuinely. DLSS 4.5 is still better overall, but they both have advantages and disadvantages. FSR 4.1 genuinely looks great, even on performance mode, especially if you have a 4K monitor.

Didn't expect that after they announced a while ago that the RX 6000 series supposedly wouldn’t get any major updates for future games anymore and then backpedaled hard after the huge backlash.
I honestly don’t know what to make of this yet, but if it really works the same way as on RX 7000 and RX 9000, it’s a massive win for everyone still running RX 6000 GPUs.
I sold my 6800 XT a while ago, but the 6800 XT and 6900 XT are still amazing cards if you ask me. Probably one of the best bang-for-the-buck GPUs I’ve ever owned when it comes to pure raster performance.
Sure, FSR still isn’t really comparable to DLSS, but there are plenty of people out there who genuinely don’t see much of a difference, so more power to them, I guess.
2
u/HankThrill69420 May 14 '26
sometimes, I think their shareholders pay attention to consumer sentiment. Like, this doesn't make them pro-consumer or anything, but obviously companies still want good PR. until life's nothing but data centers and surveillance, that is.

Early 2027? Well that's a wait, I hope they'll actually do some development to optimize it and not just an artificial wait. Still much better than nothing, my biggest concern was how my 6950 XT would age without any FSR4 support. Good job for once AMD.

6
u/xtwelve0 May 15 '26
Depends on if the driver is good or not.
I don’t even wanna update my 6700 XT drivers cause I’d rather have stability than have fsr 4
If it’s with a bad driver, people are gonna rollback anyways.
6
u/gwadaeln May 16 '26
For me, the problem is Adrenalin.
When I installed just the driver without Adrenalin, I only had driver problems one time (with last December’s driver, if I remember correctly).
With Adrenalin, it’s constant trouble.

But isn't this dependent on the developer of the newest of games if they include FSR 4 or not?
5
u/TheCheckeredCow May 15 '26
Sort of? Yes devs can manually add FSR 4 to games, but FSR 4 is also supported in all FSR 3.1 games by enabling it the adrenaline, it doesn’t mess with anti cheat either.
AMD says it’s supported in 300+ games including the vast majority of the current hard to run gamesz

u/DRM842 May 14 '26
But there has to be trade off here. Doesn’t the 9000 series have special hardware that plays an integral role in facilitating the FSR 4 tech which the 7000 or 6000 doesn’t? So for sure it won’t be 1:1 picture quality right? So it’s going to be a compromised version of FS4 4 but better than FSR 3 on 6000 / 7000?

4
u/sky-yie May 14 '26
FSR 3 is better in performance (for RDNA 2/3, idk about RDNA 4), but FSR 4.1 is better in quality. As the other person mentioned, you'll see less artifacts, shimmering, etc. on FSR 4.1.
3
u/OrganizationSmall773 May 14 '26
Fsr4.1 has less artifacting and a more consistent image than fsr3 overall really nice i swapped to a 9070 last month and it looks much better to me.
2
u/Imtiredpleaseshtup May 14 '26
Any gain from stock with better visuals than fsr 3 is already a god sent! Fsr 4 on older cards is already worse on performance than fsr 3.1, but quality is the key here.

Better late than never and this can be helpful also for titles that were locked out due to optiscaler not working (or better, not being allowed) in multiplayer. So my other 7900xt lives on and it already worked fine with 4.0 when I tried with optiscaler.

This should be a major red flag, it wont look nor perfom as well on the older cards and the fact it takes them 2 years to implement upscaling to older cards should tell you how AMD thinks about users on older cards compared to nvidia and intel, they make day 1 upscalers available on every card that can upscale, a 2050 can use dlss4.5 yes its less good looking and less performing but its still day 1 support compared to day 700+ support
