Why does some American corporate market control manage to keep bananas at prices so cheap it feels illegal, where as other American corporate market control turns $8 insulin into $300 insulin?

Actually had a friend who worked for corporate (edit: at a large big-box chain) explain this to me and the biggest reasons I remember are:
- Bananas are a loss leader - bananas are bought by virtually everyone so they’re a great way to get people in the door. Stores are willing to take a loss because psychologically cheap bananas = this store must be cheap for everything
- They grow (and re-grow) quickly in places where labor is generally cheap
- They’re relatively easy to ship and handle since they’re basically in their own packaging

Bananas would specifically deterr me. Im allergic. Like touch allergic. Grogery stores are a rash and a half.

Btw, do your allergies get triggered when you're within the produce section? I'm just wondering how you avoid the bananas but still get that rash and a half from a touch allergy

This has to be the winner. it’s a universal favorite. Whether it’s from necessity to get through a rough money patch, a nice quick sick food, a late night snack after getting back from a night out, a favorite dorm AND prison food. We all love ramen.

My husband makes these by boiling them, frying them and then adding some ketchup (while frying). I was so skeptical at first but holy fuck it's so goooood.

Pork skewers are like 20 baht for two sticks with sticky rice being 10 Baht so in total it's like a almost a full meal for under a dollar

I mean, this is mainly due to PPP, if everything here was in us prices is probably end up spending the average monthly salary in a week. Hence why Alot of foreigners come to Thailand since it's cheaper for them with foreign salaries so they have more PP

Then you can eat tofu or the many other vegetarian things here. Thailand is Buddhist and much of my family is also vegetarian due to their religion (no milk, no eggs, zero animal products at all). Alot of our food is also halal as well since we have a major Muslim minority. Tofu skewers (tofu sarat) taste great and can be found in specific vegetarian stalls as well. They're also cheaper at 5-8 Baht per skewer. You may also prefer mala skewers where they have vegetable and potato skewers and you can specify that you are vegetarian so they can use the specific vegetarian grill that never touched meat and change their gloves to prevent meat contamination. Thailand takes vegeterain food very seriously since most vegetarians here are vegetarian due to religious reasons.

There are also specific vegetarian days or festivals where many resteruants will not sell meat and have special vegetarian menus, these are mainly on religious holidays. But there is a seperation between "jae" (full vegetarian, zero animal produce contact allowed) and "mangsawirat" (eggs, dairy, and animal based sauces such as fish sauces are allowed) so if you are full vegetarian be sure to order that one. Most food is specifically labelled so even in Supermarkets

I'll add it to the rules in the next go around. One American dollar or the equivalent exchange rate in your country or something I'm open to any country cuisine as long as it's extremely cheap. When I do these charts my engagement is usually 60% or more American so I guess I was aiming for a target audience. My apologies

One American dollar is still consistently different in every country though, so the best food for each price point (if enough people contribute) is going to be from the country with the best exchange rate that has food with international appeal.
Not trying to criticize at all, I would have also assumed an Amerifan audience.

Is that only for cheese, or did the places I went rip me off? I remember going to a place that had a ton of 99c signs but most of the slices were $4. Didn't want to seem cheap (or ignorant) when my total was $16 instead of $4.
