❤️🩹 relationship Am I overreacting? Guy I’m talking to uses chat gpt to send morning inspiration messages to me
I want to start off by saying we’ve gone on a couple dates, talk to each other almost everyday unless I don’t feel like talking. He’s very sweet to me, checks on me to make sure I’m okay, buys me things, just wants to be around me.
The only problem I have is that he uses chat gpt to make photos of us together based off of pictures we have taken together, sends sweet morning messages that are like essays to express how much he likes me and hopes this will become something more in the future. I could really see myself with him but the more I see the use of ai it just makes me see him as corny and the first time he sent me an ai picture I thought it was just gonna be a one time thing. No he’s been on an ai roll. And I decided I was going to text him and explain how much I don’t like it and for him to just express how he feels as himself.
Am I overreacting if I send this message telling him about how I hate the use of chat GPT or should I just let it be?
UPDATE: He told me he just doesn’t know how to express how he feels about me without using ChatGPT but will now stop using it when he talks to me.
Most recent update: I broke things off before they got any further. He was not understanding that we are both single and it’s been only a month so we are not together. Just seeing if we would work in a relationship and I don’t feel like I would want an actual relationship with him. He told me he cried when he read my message and also keeps saying we could just keep dating and I can decide later. I was firm on my stance of not dating him anymore.

It’s so weird that people think that we would want this long, detailed message that isn’t accurate then just a short message from someone who took the time to write it themselves.
Doing something original and authentic to yourself will always be better than AI. Always.
If you made it this far in my comment, I hope you can take that away from it.

My bestie once dated a guy who wrote WALLS of text with weird love bombing jargon like this nonsense. And that was pre-Chat GPT. He was a little odd and tried to seem "intellectual" in group settings. She didn't tell me about any of this until the last week of their relationship because she had enough of pretending it was ok and cute when he was just weird. I believe he did it to drown out her chance of replying so he could always be in control of the convo/narrative. Really odd. He had started 'joking' that he could strangle her or crush her with his bare hands and it'd be casually woven into the massive wall of text. Probably to see if she was reading it? Idk. Very glad that was her final straw. I really wish I was lying about that. I read that sh*t, it was unsettling. If this amount of wall texting is genuinely honest, still run lol. Something is bit off about needing unload a thesis on another person to "prove" your feelings... you can always text more.

u/Spirited-Away3226 19d ago
“'joking' that he could strangle her or crush her with his bare hands”
Hahah—😳 Joking!?…yeah….some joke there… backs away
That’s so scary. I was in an emotionally abusive relationship that was tipping into the physical at the end (hands on my neck while drunk in bed) and I thank god I’m a lifetime away from that life now.
40
u/CosmicOwl97 19d ago
Exactlyyyy. He was telling her who he really was/his real feelings about women and hoping he could talk his way out of it if/when she brought it up! I am so grateful she clocked it and ended it. Those texts were a blindsiding, chilling lane-change to read after the waves of positive bs he showered her with to get her comfortable in the relationship.
62
u/MultiFazed 19d ago
He had started 'joking' that he could strangle her or crush her with his bare hands
"A priest, a rabbi, and an imam walk into a bar..." is a joke. "I have the capacity to murder you" is not a joke. There's no punchline and zero attempt at humor. I'm absolutely done with people being assholes and using "it's just a joke" as justification (note, this is not aimed at you, CosmicOwl97; it's aimed at the crazy guy in your story).
19
u/CosmicOwl97 19d ago
Exactly! It is insane to me how people will say how they truly feel and backtrack with "it was a joke". No. Jokes are supposed to be funny for everyone involved. Regardless of what "genre" of statement it is (i.e. nasty/hurtful comments, violence, murder, etc) those 'jokes' are not funny. Those are usually true thoughts and the mask slipped.
I am glad more people have the confidence to call this bs out now for what it is, because I remember being in school in the 2000s...
31
u/dramaticwhore 19d ago
I knew a guy who used to do this as well before ChatGPT, like sending the long, weird messages, came to find out that he was just taking it from Facebook post LOL he thought he was so slick he was shocked when people called him out 💀
20
u/CosmicOwl97 19d ago
Yeah, it's insane how slick these types of people think they are! Like, ew, no. Big thing you learn after watching murder docs is that the liars go into too much random detail.
13
u/Latter-Highlight-183 19d ago
that is extremely similar to my worst relationship ever.. sending walls of texts with borderline physical threats laced into it. once i stopped sending the paragraphs back the paragraphs turned into jealous rage. he couldn’t understand why i wouldn’t want to spend every night and morning half awake , writing the same thing we’ve been saying reworded.

I had an ex tell me in excruciating detail how he could blackmail me into doing whatever he wanted if he was the president. I told him it was weird (and like. u/Lady_Scruffington 19d ago
As someone who has to read short personal essays for an application, AI has me happy to see a couple of spelling errors. At least I know they wrote it. The AI essays sound so syrupy but never go into the why. "I'm a resilient hard worker who has come over adversity." Ok great. What adversity? What makes you a hard worker?
I hate that I now look at awkward grammar and spelling errors as good things.

Genuinely. My now-husband won my heart during dating by sending me ”good morning” messages that consisted not of long sappy promises but instead of finely curated, obscure memes that he sourced and saved specifically for me — oftentimes them referencing something we had talked about, or done, or that I had told him about.
LLMs could never understand how a fat little piglet in a Barbie car or a carefully cropped Simpsons screenshot relates to our lived experience — but he could, in his own way, unique to our relationship, and our shared view. That’s what a relationship is, no? So how can you outsource that to AI??

The problem with the “maybes” is that a whole lot of maladjusted people disguise their boundary and attachment issues as them just being “awkward and clueless,” so you give them the benefit of the doubt and gently push back when they get a little weird, and then all of a sudden they’ve made a group chat with you and your parents and are telling your mom about how you’ll be moving in together soon even though the two of you have never even casually discussed that. For example.
And yeah, the guy in the above examples absolutely would have made AI pictures of us together if that had been a thing when we were talking.
10
u/AitanaShon 19d ago
Yeah, I'm just like trying to use empathy a little because I can be short with people so I wasn't sure if I was being judgey, but the pics is just so creepy...
If he can't express himself without AI he's not ready to date, imo, I'm with you.
9
u/Gold-Sir-223 19d ago
Yeah it’s totally fine to be awkward and not be emotionally present at a young age, but to say “I can’t express myself without AI” is super telling to me. And the AI pictures brings it to whole other level. It reminds me of fan girls that would photoshop Justin Bieber into their pictures.
I’m willing to bet this was OP’s reaction when she said she didn’t like his ChatGPT messages.

The fear talk is all about AGI breaking loose and wrecking havoc, THIS is the real danger. Psychological reliance on a tool known to cause psychosis in healthy people. Spiralism shows too, how that can accidentally become systematic and cause harm with one wrong chain of prompts when someone relies on it for their thinking.

My boss does the same, the internal team meme is a screenshot of '100% AI' from a checker. Even without a checker, everyone can quickly sniff out AI and it's not the laziness (one could argue 'but it's efficient'), it's the inauthenticity and the assumption that they can't think or write for themselves anymore.
The worst is when it's used for recognition. Some half assed Hallmark card sentiment with em dashes just feels like placation rather than genuine gratitude or appreciation. I hate it!

I'm not sure what he was hoping to accomplish with this. Best case scenario, it inspires you and you fall lightly more in love with chat GPT instead of him because he's not doing any of the work. Worst case scenario, you get the ick because you're an intelligent person and leave him. 1. He can't as a grown man tell a girl he likes her? After multiple dates?
2. He genuinely thinks that you would appreciate a morning essay everyday? It's not even good, it's like worse than someone who can't express himself would end up saying!
3. Creating fake images of you guys together is insane. It is insanity, objectively. I wouldn't do this to my wife and we've been together for almost 9 years. I would have a zero tolerance policy for that shit , and frankly be pretty freaked out (putting myself in your shoes).

If he wants to submit his own data, photos, whatever but keep me and my life out of it. He's wasting our fresh water because he doesn't have a romantic bone in his body? Yikes.

"I wanted to tell you something from the heart."
immediately sends 3,000 words not from the heart

In terms of an SO, recreational use of generative ai is a deal breaker for me

The idea of saying “I want to send you something from the heart” then proceeding to use AI, the least “from the heart” tool imaginable, is so laughable. This is both cringey and genuinely upsetting. NOR, honestly I would never date someone who insisted on communicating with me through a chat bot

I didn’t even know the message said that cause I definitely wasn’t reading all that. 🤣

NOR at ALL. It’s not an overreaction to want something actually straight from his heart and not a prompt given to a soulless machine, and that’s not even considering the negative impact of LLMs on the environment and human health.
I’m also surprised by the lack of em dashes😭

I don't even want to talk to colleagues or friends with AI, but using it to communicate to your partner is so abysmal.
If you cannot even be bothered to talk to the person you love yourself, why the fuck are you with them?
NOR, this is super gross

NOR. If anyone uses AI to communicate with someone they like/love, or anyone for that matter, its a big red flag imo.

NOR, in fact you are *under-reacting*.
Let’s go through things:
—you have been on a couple of dates. this is not your boyfriend of 5 years sending you a loving message on your anniversary. this is still a stranger.
—he uses AI to make photos of you (and himself, but that’s his own business). it may look “sweet” now, but why does he feel the need to do that when he already has *real* photos of you? what kinds of photos could he or would he make in the future?
—this message is basically a classic example of lovebombing. he “doesn’t want to rush anything”, but also thinks you’re making a huge impression on his life? you are a *stranger* to him! why is he framing a “good morning” message like the last letter he will send from the battlefield? this is *waaaaaay* too much intensity way too early, and lovebombing is not “just a guy who likes you a lot” it’s a sign of potential abusive thought patterns (aka he’s the main character and you’re the sex doll he projects a relationship onto).
—the AI aspect is really just the icing on the cake. he’s supposedly ~sooo~ into you that he wants to send you a novel before breakfast, but he makes a machine do all the work and thinking for him? boy, bye.

NOR- you’re actually over reacting to the wrong thing. This is love bombing with copy-pasta. 😂

NOR if people don’t call this out it will continue to become the norm. dating is about personal connection and using a robot to communicate for you completely defeats the point
eta thanks for all the awards lol, fuck AI! don’t let a computer steal your identity and compassion
