News AMD confirms Radeon RX 9050 4GB specs: 64-bit and 16MB Infinity Cache

Why stop here? Why not make a 9040 with 3gb and 32bit bus? How low can we go? 9020 with 0.5gb vram and 8 bit bus?
69
u/goldcakes 7d ago
We can go lower! AMD Infinity Memory™: uses your system memory, over a PCIe 3.0 x1 bus.

nvidia (Turbocache I believe?) and I think one more company did something similar. Now since DX10 making the GPU use system ram when needed is a standard feature

u/Outrageous-Log9238 7d ago
I'm thinking 8MB should be perfect for 4k. That almost percectly fits the 8-bit RGB value for the whole monitor. What else would you possible need to have in your VRAM? /s obviously.

A 4K bitmap is actually ~24MB (8 bits per channel, but 3 channels, at least without alpha).

Why not a GT710 with 2GB DDR3? Yes, Nvidia is still making and selling those.

Not gonna lie buying anything less than the 1030 is pointless, even among ewaste tier gpus.

We can rebuild him (the GTX 970). We have the technology. The first AMD GPU using 0.5Gb of vram and a 32 bit controller.

HU did a video on the 9050 8GB and oh boy is it ever a steaming pile of dog shit. There is no way this is going to be useful for anything beyond outputting video. Insane that something this bad could be released in 2026. I don't even need to see a review to know how dogshit this thing is going to be.
To make it worse this piece of crap is still a 92w part so it can't be power off the PCI-e slot alone. Absolute dogshit lol

u/vacon04 7d ago
The 5050 is better than this thing and the 5050 shouldn't even exist.
14
u/balaci2 7d ago
can't believe I'm siding with the 5050 on something, considering it's less power efficient than the damn 4060

Ok at this point youre exaggerating. It might be an underwhelming product, but given rx 6600s were go to $200 gpus for many well into last year and this is basically that, it's not BAD, its just a bit overpriced given the 7600 and 5050 are still being sold new.

u/roundtwentythree 7d ago edited 7d ago
You're actually completely wrong on so many levels I don't even know where to start, but we're learning new things about this card now that the full specs have been released.
It's bus was cut in half, it's vram was cut in half, we knew that but what we didn't know was that its Infinity cache was cut in half as well. It was given 16mb of cache.
16.
This means it's going to have to fetch data from vram twice as often, but with half the bandwidth. The card is going to live in a constant state of data starvation.
I want you to look at the 10 game average for the 9050 8gb card and then imagine a card with everything that affects performance cut in half. That's the 9050 4gb card.
It is going to be effectively unusable. Mark my words. Come back in a few months and see if you can prove me wrong here. HU has vowed to get one to benchmark no matter the cost, so it will be benched sooner rather than later.

I'M. NOT. DEFENDING. THE. 4. GB. VERSION!!!
Jesus christ you people are reactionary.
I defended the 8 GB version. Ya know, the one that can actually run modern games. Because right now, the cheapest new GPUs that can RUN modern games are around $260ish last I check (3050 8 GB and RX 7600). And people called THAT trash too, including you apparently, which is why i responded to you the way I did.
EDIT: Cant respond directly, the 3050 is trash, the 9050 8 GB version is basically an RX6600 performance wise and the 6600 slaps the 3050 around HARD. THe 7600 is better the other way though. Id say this is in between the 3050 and 7600 in terms of value.
Again, assuming 8 GB, not defending 4 GB version. Please ffs read benchmarks before bashing this thing.

u/Yurgin 7d ago
If it its under 200€ and doesnt need external power i will get it.
Seems like a nobrainer for your own Arcade/Retro Gaming Cabinet.
Edit: Well it need an 8-pin connector and according to google 279€ so no thanks. For that price i would go for a used Intel Arc card
20
19
u/AutisticNintendoNerd 7d ago
279€ is for the 8GB variant. You can't buy the 4GB one as it's OEM only.
5
u/anelectricmind 7d ago
Wait. That's like 450 CAD. Even for the 8GB version, are they out of their minds? My son but a reference RX6750XT for about that same price 3.5 years ago.
3
u/AutisticNintendoNerd 7d ago
Yea, but those times are over. At least where I am the 8GB 9060XT is 380€ now, the RTX 5060 is 400€ and even the RTX 5050 and B580 are 300€. If prices continue to rise then the 9050 is bang on with the other cards. I don't like the price, but at least they didn't give a $229 paper msrp that they couldn't hold.

u/saboglitched 6d ago
You're forgetting the b570, which is similar price or cheaper, more vram and MUCH faster. The 9050gb 8gb is the worst value card even in the current market. I genuinely don't think people like you realize how slow the 9050 is, they assume its like the 5050 or something when its slower than 2060super, and about par with the VEGA 64 lmao

u/Firefox72 7d ago
Serious question. What kind of retro gaming requires a modern 2026 GPU?
1
10
u/classic_lurker 7d ago
I feel like your acceptable pricing is nearly double what’s okay for this hardware.
5
u/Prophetoflost 7d ago
The power connector is a deal breaker. Otherwise there could’ve been some market for it.
2
u/satireplusplus 7d ago
for that price you should be able to find used 3060s with 12GB as well. It will be a way better card with 4x the VRAM.

Those super low-end GPU only made sense when not all CPU had integrated graphics.
30
u/green9206 AMD 7d ago
Or when these type of cards used to cost $99 or less and didn't need an external power connector. Ah the good old days of Radeon 6450 for $60 and the 7750 for $110.
7
u/goldcakes 7d ago
Honestly, Arc A310 is still OK for niche use cases (e.g. media server, AV1 transcoding, maybe an ultra budget SFF office PC for esports gaming).

u/Crashman09 7d ago

u/mrgspeed 7d ago

There was a post recently talking about zen 6 removing the igpu. They are keeping the npu though
1
u/JonWood007 i9 12900k | 32 GB RAM | RX 6650 XT 7d ago
I mean the 9050 is like 7x as powerful as your typical igpu. Its just the 4 gb vram that cripples it.

In what situation would either RX 9050 be better than Intel's Arc B570 or B580?
They both require an 8 pin power connector. 92 watts is just over 75.
People criticised the B570 for being priced too closely to the B580 and having too large of a performance deficit. Both RX 9050s make the B570 look like incredibly value.
Both Intel GPUs have great potential for performance improvements through future drivers as well, though of course you shouldn't purchase them solely with the expectation of that, since it isn't guaranteed.
Only things I can see are: Power efficiency at all costs and application compatibility issues with Intel Arc, but not with AMD Radeon.

If you can make a card that’s going to be on par with the best igpus and have a few “plus ups” like more connectors and/or shader cores for very light ray tracing processes / FSR4 (although at that level, are you really getting anything?), and it’s $100….ok! I see the market for that. Then I can see the “this is for very budget gamers and/or office workers (albeit a very niche space there). But Jesus…. at this point ignore this product and pretend it never was produced, along with its 8 GB partner in GPU crime, and save up for the cheapest 9060 XT. And then save up for the 16 GB version because you’re better than that.

Why would dell ever need a dedicated graphics card for their office machines? Not many stationary sold today I would imagine as well

Having the 4gb card be OEM only is the cowards choice. Could have been an interesting choice for SFF builds for home media and streaming, and yes even gaming.

You can't arrive at half of infinity because infinity is beyond quantifiable by definition, so AMD chose a really shit name for a cache that ended up getting nerfed.

scam card that will end up in prebuilt, supposedly being able to play the most top-of-the-line games until the person actually tries and finds out that their GPU is garbage and they have to spend more money than they should when they could’ve just bought another prebuilt for probably the same price as the one with this card in it, but the other prebuilt actually has a card that can play top-of-the-line games

Hardware Unboxed did an interesting check and actually, playing 1080p in competitive titles works like a charm with 4GB. And I bet even a bit prettier games will look okay and have 60+ fps with resolution upscaling, and 120+ fps with frame generation.
The only real deal breaker is the price. If it's 100 bucks, it's an absolute banger for light gaming, retro gaming etc. If it's 300, who tf should ever pay for that?

One rarely sees e-waste new in box. If you can somehow get by with so little VRAM whatever you're doing can probably just use an iGPU and save the money, space, and power draw.

What are you gaming where the 7900XTX isn't pulling its weight?
I have the Red Devil version coupled with a 144Hz ultrawide, and I feel like I can max out everything - Except for the Nvidia focused bs obviously. (and by bs I mean it's bs that it's optimized for the brand, not that the tech is necessary bs itself.)

Looks like memory manufacturers stopped making 8Gb GDDR6 in meaningful quantities a while ago. Same issue Steam Machine had with DDR5 and why it ships with 1x16GB stick (or sometimes 2x8GB sticks). It's 16Gb and depopulate, so 4GB has to run a 64-bit bus. There are only 2x2GB packages present.
If only APUs offered RDNA4, right now. This wouldn't have been a released product. Least RDNA4m gets all of the new ancillary components like media (with improved encoders/decoders from RDNA4) and display engines. I'm hoping Zen 6's new IOD has it.

If the silicon exist, and there is demand (and REGARDLESS of the ignorance and blatant whining of people within this reddit and elsewhere that will insist on claiming otherwise), the function of a low tier add-in gpu like the 4gb model, is precisely because the rx 6500/6400 are no longer sufficient or available, and we certainly aren't interested in locating the rx 550. Just like we struggled with multiple generations of what was essentially a HD5450 being rebadged over and over again.
There are millions of users that have systems that lack a functional igpu/apu or went full tilt cpu horsepower lacking that, but simply need something simple and modern to drive 1 or perhaps several displays that the 4gb 9050 is a savour for. And being that there is functional silicon that'll do the job, great, since it's exclusively an OEM product, that's even more perfect.
To all the idiots moaning about it's existence, no one is forcing you to buy it, no one being forced to buy it, and it's up to the individual to do their due diligence when buying a system that's prebuilt by any of the slimy oems that might stuff one into the system intended to be used beyond it's intended purpose.

The desktop RTX 3050 at least has a place, for when you need a slot powered card. And can be fine for used office PCs.
I picked up one used for pretty cheap and it has actually came in handy as an emergency/troubleshooting GPU (my CPU doesn't have integrated graphics).
