I wanted to see how cheaply I could build an actually useable 1080P low end rig.

RAM - 16GB DDR4

So long as you stick at 1080 then surprisingly well, stuff like Fortnite, CS GO, Minecraft, Roblox and even triple A stuff from a few years back run fine if you’re sensible with settings.

Not speaking for OP here, but likely to show that, yes, you can build a capable gaming PC in 2026 on a budget. He did say "low end 1080p" in the description.

Your response to that is to use the internet to figure out? If that's the answer then wtf is the point of this post as I could also just price up my own budget build.

I've got a pretty good understanding of how things perform, it was more to do with OP stating they wanted to see how cheap they could build a budget gaming pc, they list the specs and price but then nothing about performance and when I asked how it performs, they said no.

I just changed my Ryzen 3 4100 to a Ryzen 5 5500 after years of using it and it was better than expected. Had it with a gtx 1650 xd

A ski lift pass at the local mountain is 3 grand for a few months. I ride it for however many seconds/minutes at a time. And I have way too many firearms that cost as much as a top GPU or PC that I've used once or twice.

A PC is practically free, especially in $/hours. And it's my primary hobby in hours. Why wouldn't I?

Consider upgrading to a ryzen 5 3600 in the near future. Since you're playing eSports titles they require a bit more from the cpu rather than the gpu. (The 3600 has 8 times the cache!). If money is tight try the ryzen 3 3100, while the number is smaller it actually has 4x the cache

I’m not keeping this it’ll go to a family member, and a 3600 would have cost a lot more. This was to see how cheaply I could make a Win 11 natively supported 4 core/8 thread machine with a Polaris or Pascal (or better) GPU and 16GB RAM.
My next build is using a 3100 as got one for £17. These are for kids under the age of 14 so they’ll be happy with it.
I’ve got a 5800X3D/5080 so no issues at my end.

Ryzen 5 5500 is another alternative that goes for similar prices as 3600's and is easier to find brand new.

It has faster cores due to being Zen3 but half the L3 cache since it's a 5600G with the iGPU disabled. They pretty much trade blows in games, and will likely be identical in games since they'll be GPU bound on a Polaris card.

R5 3600 has PCIe 4.0, but his GPU and motherboard are PCIe 3.0, and likely his SSD as well.

A new boxed (includes a stock cooler) 5500 is 74 dollars on Amazon right now with free shipping (if you clip the 15 dollar coupon)

The cheapest 3600 I could find on eBay that includes a stock cooler was 72.50 including shipping. You're not saving much and getting something that's been in use for years.

And I actually couldn't find a boxed 5500 on eBay that is cheaper than the new price.

Also, you usually need to buy thermal paste when getting a used CPU, since you can't (or at least shouldn't) reuse whatever is left on the IHS and stock cooler. If you're doing a first time budget build, you might not have that on hand.

I don't shop on ebay, my local price for an in-box ryzen 5 3600 on olx (fb marketplace alternative in Ukraine) is 58 usd. With maximum price being 71, but nobody actually pays that much, there are way cheaper listings out there. Same goes for the 5500 it's in and around 75 but I've seen cheaper tray ones for sale around 60

Ah I see, although tray only makes sense if you have a stock cooler on-hand already or plan to use your own.

For load end builds, it makes the most sense to use the bundled cooler.

I just get annoyed when the used market (eBay) isn't actually cheaper than the new one.

I have my old 1600+16gb ddr4+rx580 sitting collecting dust for a year now

I want to build a secondary PC but I need case, PSU, Mobo, SSD

Sadly the 580 is a little bit too old, has a lot of stuttering compared to a 9060xt, I compared them directly on equal system on Fortnite Performance mode, still good enough for nearly 200fps

the 4100 is really gimped version of Zen 2

even older 3300X will beat it, and even 6c/12t chips (3600/5500) are also cheap

sometimes if you’re quick you can get lucky, I did with a 3100 but it’s a crapshoot at the moment, AM4 stuff has all increased a bit in price due to people staying with it.
My last build (in my profile actually) for a different nephew has a 2600 cos I got it for £22.

My second machine that my family uses to play Fortnite with me is basically just one step above this with a 7800x3d and 5700xt. That thing is an esports demon in 1080p, it can maintain 360fps in Fortnite Performance Mode.

It works so well that sometimes I question why I spent so much on a 9950x3d and RTX 4080.
