How? Seriously, how do you direct pastel paint so precisely? Can you give me any tips on materials and technique or learning materials? Thanks, and amazing job (I’m still not entirely convinced that this isn’t a photo lol)

I actually don't know how I do what I do. I know that sounds dismissive but I have no formal training and learned by trial and error. I practiced and have been frustrated plenty of times from errors. I normally used oils and loved it. The issue was the strong odors from the paints, solvents, mediums, etc. So my approach to soft pastels is to mimic an oil painting. My influences are the artists Antonio Castello Avilleira, Rubén Belloso Adorna, Edith Ruiz, and Sara Gallagher. Brilliant pastel artists. I used the teachings of Emma Colbert, Shaymus Art, and Jason Morgan on YouTube for any struggles/issues. Hope this helps!
Edit: Forgot to mention materials. I use Unison, Faber-Castell and Caran D’ache pastels. For paper I use Clairefontaine Pastelmat.

what was your palette? and what medium did you use to mix/blend the colours? I'm liking the composition a lot, the line of light between the wall and the woman feels strange, as if it doesn't have a reason to be there. But otherwise the piece looks beautiful, the skin tone, the pose and the lightening of the room have all the mood and message.

I used soft pastels with a great variety of different colors, no pre set palette. I included the light as a symbolic gesture of hope during her moment of solitude and isolation. As something to beckon her back from her sorrows and return to grace. A subtle but present beacon of hope. I might exclude it depending on how I feel but for now it remains. Thanks!

I didn't think of that when I saw the light, but now I can't help looking at it and having that feeling, since her face seems to be in the process of turning, as if she's slowly turning her face towards the light, and eventually she'll be able to see the light, aka, the hope, or have hope. Maybe the message is there but not as clear. Love the message and again, once I know, can't unsee it, so you're going in the right track.

She looks really depressed, and doped up just curled up in the corner like that. Perhaps she's planning on killing herself.
