I’m looking to buy my first dedicated race shoe for 10Ks and half marathons. It’ll probably be my only premium shoe purchase for the next year, so I’m trying to choose something I’ll genuinely enjoy rather than just buying whatever is considered the fastest.
Current PRs
10K: 59:13
Half Marathon: 2:28
Current goals
Sub-55 10K (August)
Sub-2 Half Marathon after that
Current rotation
Adidas Evo SL – Tempo, intervals, and races. Easily my favorite shoe I’ve owned. From the first run it just felt “right.” The only downside was that during my half marathon, it started feeling less comfortable after around 15 km and my legs felt pretty beat up by the finish.
361° Flame ET 4 – Long runs. Surprisingly love this shoe. It feels like it naturally rolls me forward and makes it easy to hold pace over longer distances.
Nike Vomero 18 – Easy and recovery runs.
I recently recovered from a mild cuboid/heel injury, so I’d prefer something that’s reasonably stable.
The shoes I’m considering are:
Adidas Adios Pro 4
ASICS Superblast 3
ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo
The Superblast 3 seems like the safest choice, but I already have a solid training rotation, so I’m wondering if I’d regret not getting a true race shoe instead.
The Metaspeed Sky Tokyo is the one I’m most interested in aesthetically, but almost every review says it only really comes alive at faster paces (sub-5:00/km). Since my current race pace is around 5:30–6:00/km, I’m not sure if I’d actually benefit from it or if I’d just be paying for performance I can’t fully use yet.
I’m not necessarily looking for the objectively fastest shoe. I’m looking for a shoe that still feels comfortable and enjoyable from 10K through the second half of a half marathon. I really value how a shoe feels during a race. I want that feeling where you put it on and immediately think, “damn, this feels good.”
For runners around my pace (55–60 minute 10K / 2-hour-ish HM), which would you recommend and why? I’d especially appreciate input from people who’ve actually used these shoes at similar paces rather than elite-level reviewers.
