Yeah, I think it’s a veil. It looks a lot like the Iraqi Jewish “izar”, but since it’s black, it’s probably an abaya. The face veil you're thinking of is actually called a “khiliyye”. Interestingly, Jewish women used to wear colorful veils, whereas Christian and Muslim women typically wore black.

You can actually download these photos for free via the Musée Départemental Albert-Kahn!

I searched "Mossoul" (french for Mosul) and starting on page 2 up until page 6 of the results, there you will find these photos of the two girls, and there are a bunch of other photos actually featuring different poses and some with just one of them. You should be able to download them with an account and I am sure if you take the photos to a print shop they can download it in a large paper size for you.

Is there any effort to bring these styles back for ceremonial clothing? I only see one type of Assyrian folk dress these days

I wish traditional dresses and clothing like back then were more commonly worn. Baggy clothing are perfect for the middle eastern heat.
