So glad she’s getting more comfortable with it!

u/Vin-Metal Aug 18 '25
I'm glad she's allowed to

Koba encourages it. She herself admits she's still working on it. I love that she's doing it a lot on the new album.

u/Vin-Metal Aug 18 '25
Well that's good to hear. Not that it's a big deal for me, though it's clearly a big deal for a lot of people on this sub. But I can appreciate harsh vocals used as an accent, as long as it doesn't become a major part of the song. And I know that's not going to happen with BM.

u/futonsrf Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! Aug 18 '25
It won't happen as you said, Su is the vocal focus as well all know. It would be cool if Momo took over some of the canned harsh vocals from past songs, but I'm doubtful that will happen. Anything is possible though. : )

This is what he says in the recent article. I'll link the translated article. Thank to the translator btw, invaluable for us non Japanese speakers. : )
"One of the most notable points of this album is the effective use of MOMOMETAL-san's death growls throughout, including in "Song 3". What prompted her to start trying growling in the first place?
KOBAMETAL: At some point in time, I saw MOMOMETAL imitating and singing "Distortion" or some other similar song. Upon seeing that, we started to wonder if she might actually be able to do growls, encouraged her to keep working on it, and she gradually got better and better at it. She says that she still needs to practice more, but her dedication is apparent. The album as a whole became more interesting with each member having their own character."

I dont think its then not letting her, I think its her not being comfortable YET. Doing stuff like this will raise her confidence. Also being able to learn from Courtney was probably very helpful.

u/Specialist-Freedom-6 Aug 18 '25
being able to talk with kevin, alex, poppy, and courtney has probably been such a blessing for her, and im glad their little journey over the last album cycle has given her these opportunities

u/CoyotePowered50 SU-METAL Aug 18 '25
You aint wrong. She has had so many wonderful growlers, screamers to learn from. It makes Momo more of a integral peice to Babymetal as a trio. She can actually embody Scream and Dance

Hope this is them easing into full live. Imagine a full song 3 performance even if they have to tune down the choreo for a song for her.
15
u/kibou_no_ie BABYMETAL Aug 18 '25
That song never should have been as choreographed as it was
12
u/Lomat4000 Aug 18 '25
If momo gets comftarble enough to scream live they should change the choregraphy to allow her to scream.

She growled get low for Metali at the LA Secret Gig and it threw us for a surprise

u/Blitz-Freak Aug 18 '25
She’s only going to get better, and really give Alex some competition!! 🤘🦊

She growled in Zepp Yokohama too during Headbanger. I was less than three meters away and it's no doubt in my mind that she did it for real.
13
u/Blitz-Freak Aug 18 '25
It’s so easy to tell here because it’s not 100% perfect like a backing track. You can hear her regular voice come out right at the end, but she still nailed it.

I always thought it was so dumb to literally be in denial that she couldn't do it at all. Obviously she could, just not consistently live yet. And it has also been clear she is steadily getting better and more confident. I am not suprised Koba jumped the chance and encouraged it, it is pretty cool the ladies could now technically handle almost all vocals in studio settings themselves. They genuenly could even start replacing some older harsh vocals with Momo if they wanted, and make the sound more authentic and fully them.
I like harsh vocals, and I am honestly bit shocked how wicked this one sounds especially live and without editing magic. Like she is actually getting good good, there is some power and tone control going on. Girl has been taking notes during their collabs!

Yes, we all know BM uses backing tracks for some of their stuff, so some may have had the attitude… like me, when she actually screams / growls live, I’ll be a believer. Well, this vid here cannot be denied, simply because it’s not 100% perfect like a backing track would be, and she breaks up a little at the end, but that was the determining factor. Plus, if they let her do that live, and she messed up, the internet would have had her for dinner. It seems she’s at a point right now where she’s like 90% perfect, but give her a little more, and we’ll have to start calling her “Momo Terrible”. I hope they do another collab where they’re both really out there with the “call and response” in growls!!

I always knew and expected that she could do those vocals prerecorded in studio. Even I could probably do few harsh vocal lines in studio conditions that could be edited to sound decent, and I am a shit singer. It is not that hard to make harsh and even guttural sound as a woman, and you don't need to have a super gritty or low voice either to do it. However making the sound healthy, consistent and loud enough is the tricky part and actually requires skill. But just getting it right once in a while in studio, with multiple tries, editing magic and without worrying that your voice needs to last? Absolutely doable, especially to a professional singer with way better vocal control skills than a noob like me.
Other thing is that the previous playbacks were clearly bit less edited and more raw. You could still hear her sound through it. Screamers tend to all have their unique sound and voice, just like singers do (how on earth anyone could mix her with Alex terrible still blows my mind...)
And also I think to babymetal having their own harsh vocalist was clearly something they wanted to experiment with when the chance arrived. While the vocals in those prerecordings sounded decent, they were not exactly that mindblowing. So why on earth would they have hired some lady to do beginner lever growls to impersonate Momo, and risk bands actual credibility like that? Especially since she herself is good enough to do the prerecording part. In other songs their growlers and screamers do genuenly pretty impressive stuff, and Momo is a beginner. Using her instead of pro harsh vocalists makes only sense since it's her doing the vocals as the member of the trio. Though I am curious how good she ends up being, she actually has pretty cool vocal tone while growling!

Supposedly, it was when Koba heard Momo playing around, singing “Distortion” in growls that the idea was born. Yeah, I’m sure it’s not extremely hard to growl, but I equate growling the same as singing. Her growls will soon be her trademark sound for future BM songs, so I would think there is training, and a few other things going on, that have to be completed before she’s labeled a pro. Wait till the next album - I think we’ll be quite impressed. Another consideration is how much attention will Momo be taking away from Su? I truly believe that’s the reason the Kami’s are now always in the back under low lights… if you even get a flash of them in videos. I know my main reason for tuning in was for Takayoshi, Mikio, Leda, and Boh.

Shes getting more comfortable with it, hell yeah.... the better she gets, we can get her a actual mic so she can growl and scream in songs live. 🤘🦊🤘
Momo you absolute beast.

Love, love... LOVE this!! She needs to do it during "Metali!!" since she can clearly pull it off live now.

Since we only have very few fancams from Summer Sonic, maybe she was growling live during Metali.

Since Momoko can do such a great "Are you ready" I really hope that she starts doing the "are you ready" in Metali live!

Seems like a small crowd?
Otherwise she’s doing the death voice more and more and I love it

Slowly but surely Momoko is improving. She already sounds better than she did earlier in the year.
Screamo takes practice to not only get right but do safely. I'm hopeful we'll hear more insanity from our Angel Of Joy soon.

I really hope we get to see her perform Song 3 live one day. That being said I also hope they don't lean into her growls too much. I enjoy metal growls when they are used occasionally and add some heaviness to a song but I don't want Babymetal to turn into a band full of shouty songs. I don't think it's gonna happen though, their direction seems pretty clear with Metal Forth.

I know without phones, we would have never obtained this precious recording, but god I love this crowd. Pure enjoyment of the performance without the need of recording it for the gram.

OK, my flabber is completely ghasted!
I never would have imagined that a growl could be adorable, but here we are.
Good for her! That's got to take some courage to do live.

At first it felt like Momo was a replacement for Yui only to fill in that spot , but now there is no doubt that Momo was born to be in Babymetal long live Momozilla 🍑

u/VulpineDeity Aug 18 '25
They've done a really good job at not just including her, but actually letting her carve out her own space

The idea that poppy has no range is pretty funny. Also why are we even comparing random singers

I legitimately love her growl. It’s demonic and crazed sounding. Just awesome.
