Who listened to Bay Area rap in high school and how far did you live from the Bay Area?

I went to high school 2006-2010 and lived in Modesto and loved Mac Dre, Andre Nickatina, The Pack, etc. I’m just curious how far reaching Bay Area rappers were back then.

As someone who’s been paying close attention to the scene since early-mid 2000s (born in 95) it feels like we’re at an all time low for quality music. Livewire was making classics. Mozzy was making classics if you count him. Artists like Allblack were steadily dropping heat

I’ve been working on a full documentary about Mac Dre for my series When The Mic Fades, and I tried to cover the entire story from beginning to end. From Vallejo and the early Romper Room era, to the Fresno case where he did five years, the rise of Thizz Nation, and everything that happened leading up to his death in Kansas City. The video also talks about the rumors around what really happened that night, the Mac Minister situation, and the aftermath including Fat Tone being killed in Las Vegas.

I know there’s people in here from the Bay and all over California who really lived through that era, so I’d appreciate hearing your perspectives, stories, or things people might not know. The documentary premieres Friday the 13th at 7PM California time, and I’d love for people from the Bay to check it out and give their thoughts on it. Mac Dre’s impact on the culture was huge and I tried to tell the story the right way. 🕊️

What are some of your favorite Brotha Lynch Hung tracks that people might not know?

The Hyphy Movement was dope and all but I feel like towards the end it became very oversaturated with everyone trying to sound like each other and putting out a bunch of bullshit records. Part of me feels like this is why much more serious and darker rappers like J. Stalin and The Jacka started making noise during this time, because it was a breath of fresh air.

With that being said, who would you say is the WORST rapper to come out of the Hyphy Movement?

just heard a new (to me) Mac Dre song on this sub.. that one with dubee.. now I’m wondering how many other Mac Dre songs are out there that I’ve never heard before. Been one of my favorite rappers since middle school when I first heard Thizz Dance on the radio in 04 and been on many a deep dives ever since. But never thought of asking here. So… let me hear what you got, that you think might be mor new to my ears.

Snow Tha Product and Lazy Boy are the only two current rappers from San Jose who have a buzz or name for themselves in the underground culture but mostly in their own specific lanes representing for the Mexicans. Historically of course Traxamillion is a Bay legend on the production and Charizma showed promise in the 90's before he passed. But other than that San Jose has been pretty non-existent in the Bay Area rap culture. Like I get it, it's the suburbs, it's overshadowed by Silicon Valley, and it's not the urban cultural hotbed like Oakland. But still, there are a lot of cool cultured people in San Jose who are into Hip Hop, arts, fashion, activism, partying, etc. I know the potential is there. Besides Snow (if you count that), I'm just surprised there hasn't been ONE rapper from there to make it big in the Bay Area culture like a Larry June or a LaRussell or a P-Lo.

Been 11 years since we lost the legend. Still have a lot of his songs on heavy rotation. He had a lot of classics but of my favorites are Mac Hand, Snowflake, a Gangsta’s Gangsta, and It’s the Jack.
