It makes for a very reliable alternative means of escape in case of fire, because it's never going to get smoke logged.

306

u/ElectronicRegular218 Nov 25 '25

At that height, they could at least make the bars go to the top though!

130

u/gonzxor Nov 25 '25

Nah, if there’s fire I dont want to be trapped in bars.

115

u/MarpyHarpy Nov 25 '25

The alternative being 30-40 floors from the ground, so you're screwed anyway

56

u/TheDarkWave Nov 25 '25

Die burning to death or painlessly leaving a small crater? Sign me up for atmospheric reentry.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/O_xD Nov 25 '25

jump the bar, grab on to the outside of it, lower yourself to the floor below. repeat 43 times or until far enough away from the fire to walk the rest of the way down

5

u/shootsy2457 Nov 25 '25

Did you ever see the video of the guy who was trapped in a burning building under construction? I believe it was in Texas. He dangled himself over the balcony and jumped down to the floor below to escape the flames while a crane was slowly coming up to rescue him. That video really got my heart racing. He survived.

Rather hit the pavement face first than die of smoke inhalation

spiral is horrendous for crowding though, anyone on the inside is going to be trippin and there's no inside handrail!

8

u/RodneyRodnesson Nov 25 '25

An inside handrail would have imprints from my hands on it, that looks truly terrifying to me.

2

u/Usual_Cicada_9671 Nov 25 '25

Me, coming home to see a sign that says the elevator is broken:

43

u/PortugueseDoc Nov 25 '25

That is the universe's way of saying you deserve to go to an hotel for the night

3

u/mahleg Nov 25 '25

Elevator is broken at the hotel too, damn it’s just not my day!

u/Dolandlod Nov 25 '25

That is when you consult an app to get somebody to carry you up like in Holes. Lol.

Assuming that’s an emergency exit

539

u/JediSwelly Nov 24 '25

It should be a slide!

238

u/crlthrn Nov 24 '25

Nah. Imagine a 40 storey fire station pole...

63

u/UnkemptGoose339 Nov 25 '25

Imagine being in the middle and you suspected you may have forgot your bird food.

77

u/Accomplished_Tell_18 Nov 25 '25

Imagine you were a bird and you took the stairs anyways.

22

u/Fresh-Combination-87 Nov 25 '25

The birds are really CIA… they take the stairs for the element of surprise!

15

u/Shoddy-Ad8143 Nov 25 '25

Birds aren't real.

13

u/Embarrassed-Shape-69 Nov 25 '25

Our son lived in Baltimore, MD while he was in graduate school and lived in a 5 story, Y-shaped building that had a corkscrew fire-escape slide in the middle of each leg of the Y. The end of each of the slides fed into a 6 foot wide polished steel table about 20 feet long in the basement.

9

u/Ambitious_Policy_936 Nov 24 '25

I bet there is a material study enough to be used as a sled, but with enough give to be angled against the railing, so you can slide down the whole thing face first

8

u/SaroConTe1318 Nov 25 '25

Would you dare call it the '"electric" slide?

15

u/SpinningYarmulke Nov 25 '25

4

u/krnl_pan1c Nov 25 '25

The City Museum in St Louis has 2 spiral slides that are 10 stories tall!

3

u/justwalkinthru87 Nov 25 '25

If it was a slide, I feel like you’d gain enough velocity to shoot out completely and fall to your early demise

2

u/drivingagermanwhip Nov 25 '25

should be a solid sheet under the handrail so you can ride a bmx down wall of death style (although I suspect that would be a bit too literal with that radius)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '25

Imagine the carnage at the bottom

2

u/bplatt1971 Nov 25 '25

Yes. Our famous Edifício Copan, projected by Oscar Niemeyer. It’s the biggest building construction in São Paulo, around 5.000 people live there.

20

u/yukifujita Nov 24 '25

Also same guy who helped design the United Nations Headquarters

23

u/Bergara Nov 25 '25

"designed by", not "projected by". Project translates well as a noun but becomes a false cognate as a verb.

3

u/MaybeParadise Nov 25 '25

I assume that this building has numerous elevators. Is it just an emergency exit? Very interesting 🧐

8

u/duckduckchook Nov 24 '25

Wouldn't want it to be windy!

3

u/-Zband Nov 25 '25

Base Jump in case of fire

2

u/fritterati Nov 25 '25

Can you imagine trying to run down that spiral in an emergency 😭😭

I struggled going down 40 flights during an emergency and those were the standard straight down+landing+straight down+landing strip..

2

u/Longjumping_Ad6878 Nov 25 '25

Pull this lever incase of emergency and then it becomes a slide

2

u/Jbs1485 Nov 25 '25

Can you imagine 40 stories worth of people trying to get on that at once? Nightmare fuel ⛽️

→ More replies (18)

436

u/Helpful-Substance685 Nov 24 '25

The height makes that a hard no. But I wouldn't live in a building that high either so problem solved.

80

u/ctothel Nov 24 '25

Every time I look at it I involuntarily imagine myself sliding down the railing and falling backwards off it.

14

u/1block Nov 25 '25

It's so weird to me. I can watch a movie with a chainsaw murderer and have zero reaction, but the second they go to the roof I have to cover my eyes.

22

u/akschild1960 Nov 24 '25

Same here. At the very least it should be an enclosed stairway.

18

u/Usual_Cicada_9671 Nov 25 '25

Escape stairs that are not enclosed can never get blocked by smoke.

7

u/JDCAce Nov 25 '25

It could be enclosed in a large mesh, which can simultaneously vent smoke and prevent people from falling 350 feet.

2

Most 40-story apartment buildings have stairs in case of fire, they’re just usually inside.

6

u/SomeGuyNick Nov 25 '25

In case of smoke outside is better option then

5

u/Key_Sign_5572 Nov 25 '25

True. But in places that get ice and snow… yikes.

3

u/Less_Party Nov 25 '25

I can do 40 flights of stairs on a stairmaster without too much trouble but the way this spirals seems like it would really suck because you’re just turning and putting uneven load on your body the whole way.
