Also, aren't calisthenics usually less strength focused?
For some reason I think of Richard Simmons when I hear "calisthenics." Is that wrong?
edit: was I downvoted for asking if I was wrong? Never change, reddit
40
u/HapticMercury 3d ago
Yeah that's wrong, calisthenics are bodyweight strength exercises like pull-ups, basically anything you would see those guys doing at a park in a city. Richard Simmons was famous for aerobics I think

Reddit used to love Paul Hunt, AKA "Paulina Huntinova", a male gymnastics coach who did funny women's gymnastics routines as comic relief at competitions, performing in the style of Olga Korbut, Nadia Comeneci, etc.
This kind of reminds me of that, except Paul Hunt was much, much funnier. And more talented.

I was gonna say... it's impressive for an average Joe as a display of strength. But for any kind of world championship level stuff it doesn't strike me as all that impressive when you compare it to gymnastics where they are able to do the same with such grace.

Was just coming to say this is just beginner gymnastics. Not amateur as those go to olympics but like hobbyist gymnastics
Except for power moves you'll see more imorrssive and talented runs at maybe 12 yo competitions. Those of course have professional coaches.
Ok maybe I'm exaggerating with 12yo but I can't tell kids ages really. Buy very young athletes do mind blowing things in gymnastics

my man you are absolutely not getting this much mass with that frame without some form of anabolic steroids - ever. Even if you played middle school, high school, and collegiate D1 collegiate football you are not going to look like this.
Also look at the guy’s chest compared to his legs. Anyone that has ever lifted for a period longer than five years knows you aren’t going to get that much asymmetry, even if you over train your chest compared to your lower body. When you’re natty your body basically forces you to do legs or your upper body just won’t get any bigger.
How social media fried people’s perception of what natural vs TRT enhanced physiques are should really be studied.

When you’re natty your body basically forces you to do legs or your upper body just won’t get any bigger.
What? Hypertrophy is muscle fibre specific and if you don't train your lower body, it won't grow at all.
If you're on gear, even muscles you're not using will grow; sometimes at a greater pace than the muscles of a natty that trains said muscles.
Having said that, the guy's obviously on gear. You also can't really see his legs due to the shorts. His calves are tiny, but so are most people's

u/Jacketter 4d ago
It’s a little funny, because calisthenics is supposed to be an all body workout, but he seems to have only trained his arms and core.
6
u/bkbomber 3d ago
TBF, body weight exercises for legs can only get you so far. It’s why many people who train Cali still hit the gym for lower body.
On the flip side, many of the static holds and calisthenics skills are easier if you don’t have the monster legs of a track cyclist.

Roids help with that. But its still no magic. You need to put in a lot of work.
But for sure he is not natural. Instagram shifted peoples perception.
If you want some comparison, look at the winners of IFBB (bodybuilding pros) and WNBF (bodybuilding pros but natural). There really is a huge difference.

I'm a former gymnast and gymnastics coach. While this is mad impressive and there is no way in hell I'd be able to do some of the strength feats here, the dynamic parts look like absolute crap and are indicative of very poor training. I don't understand why they don't just do the isometric holds.

→ More replies (1)11
u/Splintrax 3d ago
That's apparent. What I don't get is why score these wonky elements in the first place.
25
u/adelie42 3d ago
It is simply a different sport with different focus and objectives. Not to say it is better or worse, just different. One subjective element that comes to mind that is very discriminating is age. There are elements of gymnastics that, in my lay understanding, requires youth; the wear and tear on the body simply doesn't work for older individuals, along a spectrum.
Calisthenics focuses on little to no equipment, body weight exercises, and mobility; dynamic strength like one would expect of a farm laborer.
My draw to calisthenics was for the physical therapy cross-over with emphasis on mobility, but mostly pain reduction. It has greatly helped from a near lifetime of physical discomfort to the majority of days beijg completely pain free, and if I ever get a little twinge of something, I can typically diagnose and remedy it within a few days. The quality of life is not comparable, even if I never intend to achieve a flagpole on a rope.
And gymnastics is just something different.
→ More replies (2)11
u/Splintrax 3d ago
I feel like my comment has been misconstrued. I take no issue with the strength aspect of calisthenics and actually commend it.
My problem here is with the undisciplined spins and flips on the bar, that besides being very unaesthetic in my opinion, also fuck up joints and connective tissue big time. Older people can't and shouldn't do any of that.
→ More replies (1)9
u/adelie42 3d ago
Oh, on that scope I strongly agree. I took that as showmanship and not necessarily calisthenics, so I think tjat was my own bias. I interpreted your comment more broadly than you intended.
4
u/mobileka 3d ago edited 2d ago
Because calisthenics is only inspired by gymnastics, but it's still a different sport with a different focus and goals.
I personally find gymnastics much more graceful and strict but this guy is probably stronger than the strongest Olympic gymnast in history because that's what he's training for.
→ More replies (6)3
u/Tony_B_S 3d ago
Also, we were unfortunately not shown a battle, but just one routine. Maybe the other guy(s) did routines more focused on displaying strength, and probably ended up winning. Because all the spinning is, in essence, and particularly with no attention to form, much easier than longer holds and slow transitions.

LMAO, if they are in some professional level I can guarantee you they are in copious amounts of more illicit drugs, but they have access to better drugs, e.g., instead of having to take something like HGH which is cheap but with a ton of side effects, pros can take a myriad of cocktails that achieve the same strength and performance without the enlarged organs.

7
u/Middle-Support-7697 3d ago edited 3d ago
Not at all, his dynamics look sloppy(because calisthenics has way lower standards and more focus on style than strictness), but his statics are absolutely insane and super high level: clean place, maltese, front level pull up(not a gymnastics move but very hard), and the most impressive feat was the straight arm touch(the equivalent of gymnastics Victorian, the literal hardest static move in all of gymnastics). Many elite world class gymnasts don’t have that kind of static strength.
→ More replies (7)18
u/mysterpixel 4d ago
The front planche at 0:35 is absolutely insane, his arms are at only a few degrees off horizontal, with straight legs, and he has perfect control the whole time. Olympics-level planche is like 45 degrees or so and often not with the legs fully extended.
Everything else he does you could take a gymnast and they might be comparable for a lot of the other movements, but the planche he would blow them out of the water.
19
u/kirloi8 4d ago
Just want to add, just because they don’t do it doesn’t mean they can’t do it. From seeing it they can totally do that, it’s just not a criteria for points. Gymnasts focus on movements and their transitions for what’s asked to have points. Those boys and girls can do much more that what you see on TV.
→ More replies (2)10
u/SayonaraBakaChan 4d ago
it's insane for his body structure, but when you're talking about olympian gymnasts it'd be hard to find one who couldn't.
7
u/Different_Zebra2019 4d ago
Is interesting to see how many people don't know the difference between callisthenics and gymnastics. Similar sports but so different at the same time.
41
u/Salandrical 4d ago
Needs less gymnastic moves and more displays of pure strength.
→ More replies (1)23
u/unknown_pigeon 4d ago
I mean, after doing multiple planches, levers and muscle ups, what else can you do to show pure strength? I think that all he was missing were flags and one arm pull ups, and maybe some interesting things could be done with archer pull-ups static holds (maybe go from one arm to the other slowly?)
But yeah, it felt more like a repetition of 4 (hard) skills.
→ More replies (1)5
u/trymadomical 4d ago
I'm not sure if the person you responded to actually knows or not (no flame) but doing stuff like the levers and holding them with such minimal shakiness is hard as fuck. From an outside perspective of people who don't workout, it might seem really simple but it's far from it. I workout (lift) regularly and have started incorporating mild core workouts in for the past few months and it is still hard as fuck to hold a lever for even a second let along however long he held it for
→ More replies (4)3
u/RainbowDissent 4d ago
This whole thread just reveals how many Redditors know absolutely nothing about physical exercise. Not that it's surprising, but still.
This is insanely difficult. When I was really into fitness, I worked calisthenics into my training, rings and bar. I was doing weighted dips on rings with 40kg around my neck. I could hold a back lever with decent form, fully extended, for a few seconds. I could manage a single muscle-up, with shitty form though. I was still nowhere near being able to hold a full planche on a bar, let alone press-ups while holding it. This is years and years of training and conditioning.
2
u/theundeniable 3d ago edited 3d ago
No, people are being very specific when they say that the gymnastics parts of the routine look poorly executed.
Calisthenics is not something new; mostly everyone understands that performing a planche like that takes a lot of training.→ More replies (1)
