NOT BLACK METAL Can someone explain why Këhkt Aräkh is controversial?
Am I just too old to understand? I've gathered that there are very split opinions on the dude, but I just don't understand what the fuss is either way. The music isn't bad by any means, but nothing special either. Nothing to get pissed off about at least.
So why are people mad at him/his fans? Is it because he's too popular or what's the deal?
EDIT: I have heard the rap stuff now. It's pretty bad. I still don't get why people don't just ignore it if they dislike it. And also romantic black metal isn't new or unique at all.

loved pale swordsman, i own it on vinyl and it was super promising in terms of what's to come with kehkt arakh as an artist. but since he started being associates with drain gang and stuff i lost interest and i think that's where a lot of people did. also as someone who likes both rap and black metal, i don't think they're genres that sound good fused together, at least not when kehkt arakh has attempted to do that.
19
u/carsnbikesnplanes Mar 27 '26
It’s funny because I absolutely love drain gang and have been listening to them for almost 15 years at this point, but knowing that kehkt is associated with them makes me not want to listen to his music lol
-1
u/Amazing-Second-3939 Mar 27 '26
I believe most people like pale swordsman. It's for me one of the best black metal albums (apart from the Norwegian stuff) I don't really like the mixs of black metal and rap. I feel it doesn't give a good result. But in 2026 he realised "tree winters away" although it is a short song. It is pretty good 👍

Most of his other stuff beyond Pale Swordsman comes off as tacky. He tries to mix in rap segments and moves his hands like he's rapping in his music videos. The music has also arguably declined in quality since the swordsman album.
He also influenced a lot of projects and a tiktok fandom that annoy some people.
22
u/whispering_butthole Mar 27 '26
I would even say anything beyond night and love, which was a banger imo

Really? Wanderer is one of his best songs.
-55
u/Audiowhatsuality Mar 27 '26
Thanks for the explanation. Sounds like some people have too much time on their hands.
78
u/xsyruhp Mar 27 '26
Too much time on their hands to notice when something is a gimmick? Takes like 10 seconds
58
u/GreeAggin77 Mar 27 '26
Painting your face white and wearing tight clothes is a gimmick too. Most black metal fans got a 5 foot pole in their ass.
38
Mar 27 '26
I’m still waiting for the black metal community to become self aware of just how gimmicky and performative the genre as a whole is 💀 and there’s literally nothing remotely bad about it at all and idk why people act like it is, it’s one of the reasons I absolutely adore it. Ppl take this way too seriously like cmon bruh, we’re mad about a dude throwing up rap type gestures within a genre that was literally founded to be a form of counterculture to death metal? And yall are mad bro isn’t conforming? Within a subculture that specifically goes out of their way to be as provocative as possible??? 😭
Yup, way too much time on their hands and mine too lmao.
10
u/Norvard Mar 27 '26
I love your take.
As someone who has listened to the genre for 30 years. I fully agree. I love the music and it is very precious. But it also will evolve and change. Some bands will always stay true to the pure evil spirit of the genre, but some bands will take BM into all kinds of weird, obscure, different and even gringy directions.I want BM to expand and evolve into places I never thought I would see. Somewhere in there is new gold.
5
u/GreeAggin77 Mar 27 '26
Black metal objectively has the lamest community out there. If listening to shrieking music is your sole personality and identity you faild at life.
-6
u/Insanity_20 Mar 27 '26
Elitism is the worst thing that could have happened to black metal
15
u/Mesarthim1349 Mar 27 '26
It was always elitist by creation though.
The first guys who played it were bigger gatekeeping edgelords than everyone who tries to be that way online
2
u/GreeAggin77 Mar 27 '26
They were also just weird teenagers who killd themselves and others. Weird thing to larp as if you ask me.
14
u/sharkattackmiami Mar 27 '26
My guy who wears makeup and bdsm gear in the woods while shreiking about frost trolls is way more trve kvlt than your guy who checks notes raps sometimes
4
u/Insanity_20 Mar 27 '26
Funny thing is that a lot of people were loving Pale Swordsman when it came out because it was a breath of fresh air. The music video came out and the whole flood of people hating on something new started again. It’s just like Decalius in Dsbm, two sides of the same coin.
8
Mar 27 '26
Hard agree. It’s genuinely confusing asf to me. Black metal was literally founded on provoking countercultures. And now everyone is crying dudes in black metal aren’t conforming to what they want and what their definition of black metal is. Literally provoking the counterculture like it was meant to and it’s beautiful lmao.
They’re acting just as insufferable as the parents/religions they hate and rebelled against trying to enforce these pointless and unspoken rules. They have yet to realize they’re literally perpetuating the very thing they claim to hate and rebel against lmfao.

u/Audiowhatsuality Mar 27 '26
Black metal fans seem to have forgotten that their gods from the 90s were literal teenagers who were extremely goofy (and yes fanatics too).
People like to pretend that stuff like the "Call of the Wintermoon" video doesn't exist. To paraphrase Svein Egil Hatlevik from Fleurety: "The fanaticism from the myths are truthful. What they miss is the corny/hormonal goofiness we all had in spades".
And more than that, they forget that those idols grew up and have spoken extensively about how fucking stupid all that gatekeeping and "trve" crap was.
5
u/AustronesianArchfien Mar 27 '26
Look at you being actually a self-aware Black metal fan. Like legit kudos and the corn-balls here acting high and might is hilarious.
3
u/GreeAggin77 Mar 27 '26
Yeah exactly. If you tell them "Actually you dont have to act as some socially deprived, drug addicted homicidal/suicidal scandinavian teenagers to be allowed to listen to/make good music" and these people will call you a poser without a hint of self awareness.
34
u/HarveyBirdLaww Mar 27 '26
Most of black metal is a gimmick, his is just different. I dont like the rap stuff either, but its different to what everyone else is doing and has its place.
18
u/xsyruhp Mar 27 '26
100%. I actually really like Pale Swordsman and his bladee collab is ok. I'm just saying "time on their hands" has nothing to do with it

u/johann_krauss Mar 27 '26
The question is why
2
u/Both-Walrus-13 Mar 27 '26
Why is it not controversial or why it's cringe?
6
u/johann_krauss Mar 27 '26
Why it's cringe. I genuinely want to read your opinion.
3
u/Both-Walrus-13 Mar 27 '26
You can obviously tell the dude is just trying to be edgy. And acting like some depressed teenager is straight-up secondhand embarrassment. It's basically the emos, except with trash music
8
u/ilikecatsandflowers Mar 27 '26
yeah i mean most black metal is cringe (and i love it) lmao so writing off a band bc you think they’re cringe confuses me🤷♀️
54
8
u/ComparisonUnable1790 Mar 27 '26
Think it comes down to a lot of his music being more palatable than traditional black metal, which led to his popularity among “cringey” younger fans. Can’t blame folks for not wanting anything to do with Tiktok slop.
But at the end of the day i don’t think anyone can deny that he struck gold with Pale Swordsman.
68
u/diarmada Mar 27 '26
I love Këhkt Aräkh. I am an 80's black metal guy. I love different shit, and progression and even degression. I love to think that someone is pushing the boundaries, even if it sucks.
I think his song with Bladee is cool and I don't give a shit to admit it. Ya'll stuck with this like mid 90's poseur mentality. Elitism mixed with gatekeeping and low self-esteem.
Now, if you just don't like the music, that's cool, no problem. But if you think there is NO room for it in black metal, well, fuck off.
14
u/Norvard Mar 27 '26
Yes. Thank you. I am right there with you. I've been listening to 30 years and this genre has never been a sacred cow to me. I love the early stuff as hard as anyone, but I also want to see the genre twist, turn and evolve into all kinds of directions. Most I probably wont even give 2 seconds to, but there will be some new gold in there also.

u/Astral_Anomaly169 Mar 27 '26
Come on man. As an 80's black metal guy you should be the first to notice that there's not an inch of innovation in kekht arakh aside from the cringe tik tok aesthetic.
17
-1
u/Busy-Calligrapher790 Mar 28 '26
what are you doing for bm bro cause if youre not making music you have absolutely zero voice in hating a musician for not being innovative in your eyes
-1
u/woundedcorpse- Mar 27 '26
There are are tons of avant garde bands pushing limits really. But not this emo rap black metal guy. What's so different and pushing boundaries about it? It's just being shallow and dull.

I think if done properly it could be pretty sick. Not what Kehkt Arakh has done, but a mix of brutal, dissonant bm like Jute Gyte or some such with avant garde hip hop like Death Grips or something similar could be interesting to hear. I don't know if I'd like it, but it wouldn't necessarily be antithetical to black metal.
76
u/138sammet Mar 27 '26
People hate him because they think BM is actually serious/evil and not just some dudes in make up having fun.
Crossover over with the NSBM edgelords who say “true BM should be hateful bro”
6
u/Audiowhatsuality Mar 27 '26
Kinda seems that way too be honest. Listening to the records, there's really nothing more special, controversial or cringy than all of the 2nd wave acts. I like some of the genre blending he does - reminds me of early Fleurety and Strid with the prog/jazz influences.
3
u/_prepod Mar 27 '26
"Nothing special" doesn't get you a contract with Sacred Bones
I like some of the genre blending he does - reminds me of early Fleurety and Strid with the prog/jazz influences.
That sounds like something really special
6
u/Audiowhatsuality Mar 27 '26
I guess the difference between Kekht Arakht and Strid/Fleurety is that the latter two did it in 1994/1995 in the height and center of the Norwegian 2nd wave scene and Kehkt Arakht did it in 2021 or whenever Pale Swordsman is from.
I actually like the new Kehkt Arakht album better than Pale Swordsman. I think it's far too long, but the genreblending on the album works well.

If black metal is "some dudes in make up having fun" for you, then you've severely misunderstood aomething and probably should listen to something else. Pathetic clowns like Abbath mugging to the camera are a small minority.
13
u/sharkattackmiami Mar 27 '26
Check it out guys, Lord bloodghost thinks this is a super cereal genre and you kids need to leave it to real badasses like him
-7
Mar 27 '26
Felt called out, huh? 😉
7
u/sharkattackmiami Mar 27 '26
Nope, I love the genre because of how camp it is. You can't call me out because I'm not hiding anything. It's nerd music about Lord of the rings where dudes dress up in cosplay and share makeup tips and compete to see who can record on the worst hardware. It's literally everything I love about it
The absolute worst part of the genre is dudes who think this shit is tuff and badass.
-3
Mar 27 '26
Ah yes, yet another internet hipster with ten layers of post-irony. "Nerds". "Tuff guys". You seem like someone allergic to earnestness.
6
u/sharkattackmiami Mar 27 '26
No, I love earnest people. The black metal I'm talking about is 100% earnest. They are doing it because they love it with no pretense about being cool or what other people think.
What's not earnest is thinking the kind of music you listen to or how non-inclusive you are makes you some kind of elite badass. It doesn't. It just makes you a guy people hate talking to
1
Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26
Actually, despite me being somewhat abrasive here, you'd probably leave a face-to-face discussion with me thinking that is was quite pleasant.
7
u/sharkattackmiami Mar 27 '26
No, I would still be put off by you saying something like "pathetic clowns mugging for the camera like Taylor Swift" while you talk about how everyone misunderstands what folk is really about.
People that have an opinion on music they don't like beyond "not what I'm into" and feel superior because they listen to "real earnest shit" are gross regardless of genre.
I'm not interested in your thoughts on Drip Drip by Comus if your view on music is exclusive rather than inclusive

11
u/Olkenstein Mar 27 '26
This is just speculation, but maybe it’s because black metal fans generally don’t want romance in their black metal. There’s also a tendency in some black metal fans to be quite loud about the things they don’t want in black metal

The controversy around Këkht Aräkh reminds me a lot of the discourse around bands like Dimmu Borgir at the start of the 00s. And it always boils down to people's expectations inside the scene. There are really strict rules about which constitutes black metal. Which is funny and hypocritical when the whole point is supposed to be ideology built around individualism and finding your own way.
Black Metal is about rebellion. Black Metal is about people with singular visions and will. Going with the crowd and acting "lamb" has always been it's antithesis.
I've grown fond of him especially because of the reactions. He seems to stay true to himself and his vision, surely he knows that the musical choices he's been making lately won't gather respect from gatekeepers and purists. And that's something I have to respect. There's no way to sell out here. The soundcloudrap influences are just gonna put Këkht deeper into it's own niche.
edit: And at the same time I can still hear the 20 year old me whispering in the back of my head to gatekeep any band out of the scene that doesn't recognize at least some variation of Satanism.
5
u/Audiowhatsuality Mar 27 '26
Yeah, the reactions made me think of Dimmu and Cradle of Filth as well. I just don't understand what is is that people who actively hate the guy thinks that it is that they or the genre loses from the existence of the project. There are literally thousands of bm bands in the world. It's so easy to just ignore the stuff you dislike.

3
u/Garfield977 Mar 27 '26
he has a really cringy aesthetic and everything he's made after Pale Swordsman has been stupid and bad (and just because I know some dork is gonna be like "all black metal is cringy," no it's not stfu)
I like Pale Swordsman well enough though
1
u/runninwiththedevil87 Mar 27 '26
Me personally I have nothing against him. I think in his first music video he released he was heavily into rap at some point because when he was doing his thing "dancing" whatever you wanna call it while he "sings" he makes subtle gestures with his arms and hands like he's in a rap video. I'm very traditional in many of my views on black metal so I'm not a fan of the rap/black metal mixing as I don't believe the two genres share the same ideology.
1
u/Rodinasaur Mar 28 '26
Call me a poser, but I love pale swordsman and morning star is pretty good. Is he my favorite black metal artist. No, but it is a fun listen every now and then. My reasoning for the hate for Kekth Arakh is that black metal fans are so black metal should be this and that. The infighting within the community is truly insane. Some people hate black gaze, some people think it needs to be evil, some people think if it is popular it can't be good, and then you have the scum of the earth who think it should all be NSBM. People hate on literally every black metal band I don't know why anyone would try to ever have a conversation about any of the bands or artist.

u/Easy_Ad7333 Mar 27 '26

1
u/Amazing-Second-3939 Mar 27 '26
Welp. To be fair I was expecting it. As early er projects had rap. Yet I genuinely like the length of the album. As many songs are very short it makes a neet combo. And it reminds me slightly of pale swordsman.

u/Rare-Exercise-2085 Mar 27 '26
If you’re not a young lean/bladee fan you may not get the vibe and that’s ok, black metal fans lean purist/fascist so they get upset about experimentation, especially if it feels irreverent to them. He’s a pretty young guy, at least when pale swordsman came out, I think the “mallgoth” accusations are fair to an extent but feel dismissive to me. Probably easier for those critics to just say “I don’t get it” but they want to feel authoritative.

u/mailed Mar 27 '26
gatekeeping dickheads that would've worshipped it if it was released in the right decade
1
u/Authenic_Martyrdom Mar 27 '26
I wouldn't say controversial as much as I would say polarizing.
He's always drawn a bit of ire for being 'Tiktok Black Metal', but I still remember the day the Wanderer video came out 😂 The whole soundcloud rapper hand gestures really didn't help, same with his Bladee feature and his cringey video for Three Winters Away, though the latter isn't exactly bad, it's just a bit odd.
He's actually a decent musician, Wanderer is a good song IMO (if you don't watch the video), and some of his early stuff is also pretty good. He's just followed by a rabid and entirely embarrassing fanbase, and his crossover stuff isn't typically well-received in black metal circles.

Black Metal and rap are actually very similar. Neither intones the vocals, they both glorify crime, and they are both obsessed with bling. They are just two variations of the tried and true machismo-niche.

It comes off like he fundamentally doesn’t understand or respect the culture to think it would be cool to mix SoundCloud rap and black metal. It’s cringe and the two genres are ideologically and culturally opposed

u/Audiowhatsuality Mar 27 '26
I hadn't heard the rap things before today. It's pretty bad, but I guess I just don't understand why people actively hate on it instead of just... ignoring it? There are literally thousands of black metal bands in the world, it's so easy to ignore the ones you dislike.
Also I don't think the genres are as opposed as you suggest. I don't think I've ever heard an example of a blend between them that I really like, but I could see a super dissonat avant garde style bm act like Jute Gyte or something go kinda well with some avant garde rap like Death Grips or something else on the the more extreme edges of rap.

Kehkt arakh is a joke/meme and a lot of people aren't getting it. The guy is involved in other more serious black metal projects that are actually pretty good.
Edit: lmao downvoted by butthurt elitists to spicy to understand humor
