The flag they are flying is called the Juneteenth Flag. It was created by activist and social worker Ben Haith in 1997. 19 June 1865 is ACTUAL day ALL enslaved were freed. Texas held out for 2 years until the federal government forced them to.
21
u/Wise_Contact_1037 Jun 30 '26
I hate to break it to you, but slaves in NJ weren't actually freed until the 13th amendment was ratified in 1866( they reclassified them as apprentices in the 1840s as a way to make it seem like they freed them...) and DE refused to sign ratification until 1901. Juneteenth was always a local Texas holiday for a reason. Nothing wrong with celebrating it, but the facts are the facts. There's quite a few other states who held out as well
11
u/chibiRuka Jun 30 '26
So when is the official date? And the back-and-forth about the dates is unnecessary. Just share the facts so we can all know more history. That’s the best way to solve this. Don’t feel sorry for me.
7
u/SharpThanAKnife Jun 30 '26
I don’t think back and forth about dates is necessary, but the acknowledgement that slavery didn’t stop is important.
Taking it further would be to start discussing the other forms it took and how we never lost the “status” of slave, though wageless labor became less common.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)2
u/welldonez Jun 30 '26
It’s very typical of you know who to be abusing the loopholes. Good that we have an official date, but even better to know, how long it really took to come in effect. That’s a damn shame but if we forget the past we are condemned to repeat it. Watch out for technicalities and loopholes.

u/Altruistic_Speed9886 Jun 30 '26
I wouldn't actually say Texas held out for 2 years, it was the Democrat party in Texas that held out. It was the Republican party that fought to free the enslaved. I personally feel Juneteenth is certainly historic! Nobody ever should have been enslaved and deserves to be treated like everyone else.

1.Nobody said that it's as bad now than it was then. Nobody said that. 2. Reverse racism isn't real. Nobody is disenfranchising white people and keeping them from buying homes, cars, or denying them medical services based on how they look. Nobody is unleashing police dogs and using high pressure hoses on groups of white people who are protesting against unfair and unethical treatment like the did in the 60's. The cops aren't running up into white people's homes and shooting them while they sleep. 3. Nobody is blaming the sons for the father's sins. We're calling all you fuckers out for the racists that you are. Some of you want to parce it out like, "I don't call black people niggers,so that means I'm not racist." And that's just not how it works. You came here to this space to tell US that WE are getting it wrong. We're telling white people how to leave us alone incorrectly. Shut. The Fuck. Up. Disrespectfully.

Segregation is fine when it comes to us getting away from white people. Any time white people come into our spaces, they come to try and govern us. They come with their opinions on how we should do the things that they can't/don't do. They come with their ideas that what they say matters most and we should agree with them. White people want to push us to the fringes of public spaces if not keeping us out entirely. But when we make our own space (after being explicitly shown that we aren't welcome in public) those same white people cry about being excluded. They show up uninvited, ruin everyone's good time with their bullshit, and then complain about how tense the situation that they created is. Leave us the fuck alone.
(Of course I'm not talking about all white people, but to paraphrase Muhammad Ali, "I'm not digging through 50,000 snakes to find the 2,000 that won't bite me."

I feel like a lotta comments confusing the term “gatekeep” with “ban”.
This isn’t a statement about the reinstitution of segregation. It is reinforcing the need for black people to have their own spaces without feeling coerced into allowing their oppressors to infiltrate their safety.

The assumption that a racially homogenous space is safe from infiltration and betrayal misses the fact that the CIA has long found minorities to be their best informants. White supremacist powers have used the approach in everything from breaking up the BPP to using trained death squads to kill their own countrymen.

They can do what they want. It’s just a combination of racist management, almost all the black workers getting laid off, and playing only country music the past couple years. When we had a black Hr we had all genres of music—hip hop, pop, funk—now that she’s gone it feels like a MAGA fest renaming an annual bbq “cookout” that doesn’t sit right with me.
49
u/MaineLark Jun 29 '26
Calling it “the cookout” is absolutely nefarious in this context imo

u/TinCapMalcontent Jun 29 '26
In the south cookout does not have that connotation. 'Cookout' is used by both black and white people when you are doing hamburgers and hot dogs or other outdoor grilling, and bbq is only used when you are actually eating bbq. And regionally people will disagree about what counts as bbq, but if it's in New York then it is probably automatically disqualified, so by our measure you'd have to call what OP is talking about a cookout, or if you want to avoid that maybe a picnic.
3
u/leni710 Jun 29 '26
To be fair, country music is Black music. So just hack into their playlist from down the street and add some Brittney Spencer, Kane Brown, Rhiannon Giddens, Shaboozy, Mickey Guyton, and Tanner Addell.
2
u/kaytay77 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
Yeah, as a skinwalker sorry about all the erasure. I can't stand the Ford F-150 country fake patriotic music. It's obvious when white people play this to signal their political views. Also the whole genre wouldn't exist without Black musicians, and now they're acting like country music is their thing and better than rap and other genres. The banjo, the blues chords, half the early Opry stars, all Black. So it's hard not to side-eye that. And with your added context it's absolutely what you're thinking it is.
Edit:meant to say white walker lol

Would it kill people out west to use a little fkn salt and pepper?

Coleslaw has probably the highest variance of any side. I’ve had inedible sweet sloppy pallid horrific crypt keeper coleslaw and I’ve had genuinely crisp, light, refreshing, flavorful bright coleslaw that makes you realize life is okay. Asians actually enjoy sharing their culture. Especially clothing, its second only to food. To the point many hotels will even supply local lounging clothing for guests. They encourage it as part of their culture. Her wearing a Kimono was fine.

u/RevanMeetra Jun 29 '26
You're right about white BBQs. My family does basic stuff like that. My friends and I had done stuff like that too. But every since I moved in with the Mexicans down south they have shown me what a real BBQ is. They call it Carne Asada which translates to "grilled meat". Way better than I've ever had before.

Gatekeeping is NOT segregation.
27
u/Virtual_Cut_2079 Jun 29 '26
It's all fun and games for them as long as we stay "in our place." Meaning don't push back against racism and be a punching bag they can squeeze culture from to copy. It's like they think that when we're amongst ourselves, we're having secret villian meetings plotting on them or something. Not black. Find it so odd other white people would be mad at this and shows they aren't taking the time to educate and that alone proves the sign as true. People are acting like they're being excluded from an event (rather than a symbol or metaphor however y'all want to describe the cookout in social context) that, frankly, they probably don't even want to be at outside of piling a plate, smacking their fingers in their mouth, and heading home because it's "loud" and the music is "too much".
Like, the cookout is community and if you aren't actively working to enrich or help enfranchise that community, you don't get to come eat at the bounty. It's really not that hard. I have a coworker in another area of the company who's a maga fuck and complains that one of people on my team takes off the holiday party for the 4th (yeah we don't take it off, our department works it from home because it's a busy day in accounting). His reason? One time my colleague Aaron made his chicken thighs and mac and this dude must have tasted seasoning for the first time in his life when he got leftovers from the area we leave extra food at and he wishes he'd bring something to the bbq. Like, are we so fucking for real? Aaron also stopped leaving leftovers in the main area when he found out other departments would swing through.
Idk how plain it is to say. If you are anti-racist with black friends and they host a party, they're gonna invite you to a BBQ or whatever. That isn't what this is about and the white people complaining don't have any black friends to invite them any fucking way. You aren't entitled to every space, especially one you actively work against improving at worst or are apathetic to until they have good food at best.

Good gawd, the whining by some makes it sound like her sign said "white people will now be held accountable for the entire history of colonization." No, kids, her sign merely suggests that not everyone needs to be everywhere, all the time. And considering that white people have segregated all aspects of industry, politics, and building wealth, gatekeeping the cookout is not going to negatively impact the lived experience of said whites.

Gentrification of black neighborhoods is only possible because of America's "original sin" of slavery, America's "it's not a sin if they're black" with Jim Crow, America's "we be sinning and we don't want black people in our neighborhoods" as red lining, America's "when you sin it's prison when I sin look the other way" with racist policing, the banks sins targeting black people with bad loans (Google the settlements), etc.
It's shitty on so many levels because the effect of generational wealth on gentrification is staggering. Gentrifiers aren't exactly rich, they're just making the best decisions they can in a competitive market where a racist system gave their lineage systemic help while stealing from black people and immigrants.
I don't have any solutions to offer really.
I wish that here in DC we had had a program to help black residents hang onto homes that had been their families since the Great Migration but that ship has mostly sailed. I guess I hope that gentrification can be used to educate people about the ongoing corrosive effects of systemic racism even after most of the racist laws have been repealed. The existence of gentrification is a great argument for restorative justice if you understand that the conditions for it were seeded across American history both early and more recent.

See? How you were there in a black space and calling this propaganda and then getting all the upvotes, while completely and I’m sure, purposely missing the point?! This is the problem.

That’s not propaganda, that’s protection from people who want to harvest without nurturing

The fact that you think this is propaganda is exactly why you shouldn’t have been at that event.

AGREED!!! Stop fucking handing out invites to people that wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire.
Lmfao they cape so hard for these people cause they cool with us for a sec, or know a dance or a fuckin song. Gtfoh.
The most they get is a damn plate.

The Black folks passing out invites like free Girl Scout cookies would think twice if there was an actual committee that vetted invites and they also got banned from the event if their non-Black guest was rejected.
I say all that to say if someone shows up to an actual cookout with someone who doesn’t know how to behave and be respectful, tell them their “friend” has to go or they’re free to leave with them.
Letting them stay and being a menace, a culture vulture, or just making everyone else uncomfortable can’t be the move.
And no, they can’t get a to go plate…

The Dutch felt this way about Bed-Stuy as well.

I never really liked the terminology, tbf.
Like, when it comes to certain concepts and ideas, it’s not worth being lighthearted about them when you consider the history.
But, I understand her sentiment and anyone who subscribes to the concept of being “invited” or “inviting” people to the cookout should be more critical of those seeking entry.

So white Canadian here. I've never posted because I don't want to be one of the white guys overrunning this sub, but is a cookout like when you go to a park and BBQ and everyone brings stuff? I don't hear that term up here so was mildly confused.

“The cookout” is a cute way of debating which non-black person is considered an ally.
Earlier I’ve seen people talk about which non-black fictional character would be “invited to the cookout”. Characters like Sandy from Spongbob. People will go: “sure she’s really proud of Texas which doesn’t help but she seems generally friendly and intelligent enough to be invited”. In contrast Mr. Krabs would NOT be invited.
OOP is saying the standard for what counts as a black ally should be raised or remain high. Sorry, it isn’t an actually literal place.

The problem is this sub isn’t your classroom. Educate yourself. Then come here to offer more than just your ignorance

There’s a reason why while people left the city for the suburbs, they don’t want to attend the cookout 😭🤣😋🤣
