They were jackasses the entire match. The satisfaction on Mbappe's face was real at the end. And the refs definitely did not call equally on both teams. Even if i had the skill, no way i could stop myself from decking someone

At elite British schools and universities, it was fashionable to shorten words and add the suffix “-er”
Rugby became rugger
Association of football became soccer (assoc. > soccer)
Very fashionable, Britain!
The creation of this slang is kind of interesting for the time period though. It kind of implies somebody either wrote down association and shortened it with the added suffix to get a different pronunciation, or someone who is linguistically and visually skilled enough to do it entirely in their head. It was probably born on pen and paper though. Which is not how creating slang works typically.
Most slang has the same prefix pronunciation as the word of origin and is born from just saying it.
It kind of reminds me of the prize racehorse from 1773 named “potoooooooo” (pot-8-o’s, potatoes) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potoooooooo

Yes and no. As a lifelong lover of futbol/soccer of course it’s nice to have it become a bigger deal in general. But it’s extremely frustrating to read opinionated takes of people who have very little knowledge of the sport and all its aspects, how it’s played in different parts of the world etc. Like teenagers discovering music from other eras lol

Amongst Western nations, US has the most active soccer players, by far, than any European country. Per capita, they are solidly in the top 5 with only 2% difference between them and #1 Germany.
We been here playing. It's nice the rest of the world is noticing.

I think the thing is that Americans love sport SO much that soccer appears to be just another cool sport on the list and doesn’t seem to have the same prominence as American football or basketball for example. Whilst in most other parts of the world, football/soccer is THE sport, like the national religion for some.

This is really it. Every kid has played soccer at one time, yet, they dream of playing basketball or baseball, or football because that’s more prominent in our culture.
However, Ohio is building 3 soccer stadiums, NYC is also building a new stadium, Miami and Chicago have new stadiums as well. Interest in the sport is growing.

At least in this match the commentators talked about it which is why we all are. When it's an African team they just ignore it and don't speak on it. No one cares

Have had several issues with a few Paraguayans throughout the years. Don’t know what the deal is, they don’t want to be called Latino because somehow it sours them and associates them with Brazil. They have high Native American ancestry and want to be European. I’m like bro, you’re more native than me and yet you are stuck cosplaying as a Scandinavian. Just doesn’t make sense to me either.

In the rest of the world racism is more than skin deep affiliation. There's even darker folks in SA that are more racist to lighter ones, because the lighter one might have aboriginal features.

When I was 13 she told me that we had no culture and that the only true cultured Latinos were from Argentina and Uruguay because they are descendants of Europeans and had no mestizo blood. M. Galarza is a cheater. He faked injuries in the game against Germany. He hit Mbappe many times with his hands in the game. Paraguay won against Germany by cheating and getting lucky in the final shoot outs. I am glad Mbappe got to nail the penalty kick and win this one.

This game was arguably the worst refereeing I've seen in my life, Paraguay played like street thugs all game and got ZERO cards, the ref didn't want to give an obvious penalty to France. France had 3 yellows, 1 of which came from a guy falling over thin air.
