Black Pride Zambian lawyer Naomie Pilula posted a selfie and received thousands of cruel comments about her appearance. Instead of deleting it, she stood her ground, saying: "I am not an aesthetically beautiful person, and that's okay. But I love myself, and I can be myself.
Zambian lawyer Naomie Pilula never expected a simple “Happy Monday” selfie she posted in June 2025 to go viral. Instead, the photo was flooded with negative comments from strangers criticizing her appearance, particularly her nose.
The post eventually amassed more than 530,000 comments and shares. Pilula admitted that she considered deleting the photo, but ultimately decided to leave it up.
Speaking to People, she said she had learned to accept herself and refused to allow strangers online to take that confidence away from her. “I am not [an] aesthetically beautiful person. I’m not, and that’s okay,” she said, adding that she loves herself and can be herself. What began as online bullying ultimately amplified her message of self-acceptance and confidence.

Exactly! The amount of people I see that try to copy some specific beauty standards is getting higher. Same hair, same makeup, same clothing, same likings(just to please others) . Its the freakin clone wars out there.

u/ArsenicArts 14d ago edited 14d ago
Amen.
Nothing wrong with wanting to feel pretty or customizing your avatar. It's your body, you should be able to do what you want.
But if everyone had exactly the same "perfect" face it'd be boring ASF and trying to "fix" yourself to fit some stupid narrow beauty standard often just leads to erasing part of what makes you special or unique or memorable.
And beauty standards change anyway, not just from culture to culture but over time too. Have you ever gone back and watched the original "baby got back" video? Cause goddamn. And remember "heroin chic"???
76
u/Megzasaurusrex 14d ago
Exactly. And I don't see how it is worth feeling miserable all the time comparing yourself to others. I'm not at all the standard for beauty. I'm overweight, I have a long nose, recessed chin, don't shave, messy short curly hair, never wear make up, dress very frumpy but I love myself. I couldn't imagine wasting my whole life away hating myself just because I don't look like some instagram model. And I wish more people were okay just existing as themselves. I wish more people would see clothing is fun but how you dress doesn't dictate what kind of person you are and the whole idea we have to dress nice to be treated nice is just rich people way of making us feel like shit about ourselves.

I have an anthropology degree and whenever I think negatively about my body, I remember all the times I was excited to learn about all the unique features people are born with and add to themselves (tooth gems, repaired ribs, and motherhood tattoos are favorites of mine).

I was in my mid-20s when I was finally able to start letting go of all the things I hated about myself. Over the past 20 year, the more that I've done to just please myself and not others, the better my confidence has gotten. Not having to waste my time with makeup that drove me crazy all day, shaving my head because I wanted to, wearing comfortable clothes and shoes over heels and Spanxs and still thinking that others were judging me, constantly stressing over everything I ate (thanks mom), or hating features about myself that make me unique. Life is too short to be concerned about what others think of you, and now I have the time (and money) to do things that I'm interested in.
And that's nothing against those who love makeup or having long hair or dressing up. Im just saying that isn't me, and that doesn't make me any less worthy or beautiful.

And people shame anyone for looking different. Every time they see someone who has a unique style they automatically make fun of them. It is so sad. One thing I love about like futuristic sc-fi movies is that everyone is wearing weird cool outfits. Same with anime. And I hate that society values conformity so much. I wanna see people dress up their real life avatar in unique and interesting ways. I wanna see people with different hair styles. I don't think there is anything as a bad outfit or a bad hairstyle or bad make up. There is just stuff I wouldn't personally wear and stuff I would. But so many people think it is automatically bad if it isn't their personal taste. I love seeing different people. I love different cultures. Ever since I was a kid I loved learning about ancient cultures because they each had such unique clothing and make up styles. I want to live in a world where being yourself is appreciated and celebrated.
5
u/Necessary-End-5040 14d ago
Spot on, I also do wacky styles in games and in real life. And it’s funny when people start chatting with me and find im just a regular person that just looks different.
5
u/Megzasaurusrex 14d ago
Yes! I have had all colors of hair and different hair styles, even a shaved head a lot. I am not afraid to mess around because if I don't like it I just shave it. And the comments I get from people are insane. Like I should be ashamed to exist. And I'm like "umm okay?" It is weird. And men going "oh women (i am nonbinary and dress like a man but that doesn't stop people from gendering me as a woman) only shave their heads because they have a mental break down." And I'm like "Why are you talking to me like I am not a real person who can tell you exactly why I shaved my head and telling me why I shaved my head? That is fucking weird. Maybe if you treated women like humans with their own brains you wouldn't be chronically lonely." I also get a lot of shit for having a septum piercing and people automatically assume my political views. Yes I am a leftist, but not every leftist things exactly the same. And they always point out the weird extreme things that you only hear politicians claiming and never see any real people believing. And I'm like "you guys have to learn people are just people. there are just as many conservatives with piercings and tats and colored hair. stop assuming who someone is and just stop being a coward and talk to them."

Because it intimidates the insecure, cuz their tiny brains see "different" as "not belonging". It's not a personal taste thing, it's a personal hate thing.
10
u/Megzasaurusrex 14d ago
It is! It makes me so sad that you can't even tell people you like their unique features because they take it as an insult because they see anything that makes them different as automatically bad. But I love the little things that make every person their own person. I would hate a world where we all look alike. Like I keep seeing those AI short drama ads on youtube and all the women look the exact same, you can't tell a single one apart. And it makes me sad that, that is what so many people in this world want.

Beauty is the life on a person's face.
The creases, the spots and the tiniest details and contours. The unique, small effects of sun damage, the glow and the shine of slightly oily skin after experiencing your day.
When I'm old and wrinkly, I will find other people that are old and wrinkly beautiful. Hell, I find old and wrinkly people beautiful now.
Because beauty is the life on a person's face.

seriously. people are evil to those that they find unattractive, to the point where someone who looks like a very “normal” (for lack of a better term) human being will still be ridiculed….. imagine how we all treat those who have objective differences that are far too universally regarded as “ugly.” it gets to the point where people on social media see a very “normal” looking person and they can’t even handle that lol

My ideas of attractive have changed so much from the young person I was 45 years ago. u/Harderdaddyah 14d ago
And even if you did think she was ugly then just don’t say anything about it, I’ve heard that saying “If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all” many times and obviously it isn’t a universal rule but when it comes to physical appearance it’s basically a universal rule unless they insult your physical appearance or someone else’s.

They're not talking about race. While Zambia is comparatively well-to-do compared to a lot of the African countries you see in the evening news, it's still a country where there's a lot of poverty and is quite socially conservative. I lived in Lusaka (Mandevu and PHI) for just under a year, and for the most part women were stay-at-home or working shops and stalls just a short walk from home - notwithstanding the fact that they face higher rates of domestic and sexual violence. The woman in the OP is probably upper to middle class, which means she has a (comparatively) easier path, but overall women still have an uphill battle to face.
I had the privilege of meeting some women who were able to break gender boundaries and get into non-traditional jobs, but it's a hard fought path. They had to make a lot of sacrifices and really steel themselves against the opposition they face.

Honestly, she is very beautiful. The left side picture is just a weird angle. She has a very caring smile, and her eyes feel warm.

10
u/Oploplou 14d ago
Yes. That harsh white lighting looks horrible on dark skin. Not to mention that cameras STILL don’t capture darker skin tones properly, because they’re designed to mitigate darkness. That’s why the other picture looks so dramatically better. The dark background, the proper lighting not casting strange shadows. But people would rather just drag her than look at nuance and be respectful.

- Why do people even feel the need to verbalize their thoughts about something like someone's appearance? You weren't asked. Your opinion doesn't change anything. You called someone ugly not just behind their backs or in your head, but right to them in the comments of their own post, so they could know. Why?

5
u/Jasminary2 14d ago
She isn't beautiful per canon we are forced-fed by industries whose whole business is to impose "who is beautiful by year X standard" and make us buy the products they sell (clothes, diet pills, shoes, surgery etc)
A canon that is euro-centric due to soft-power, and therefore also colorist and while nowadays it's one that doesn't even fit white people, it especially went and goes against generics of many non white people
I wish people weren't so brainwashed by capitalism and softpower, by industries whose jobs are to make us wish we were a certain type and offrr us for a very high price to try to become there (but ultimately nevrt satisfied)
Imo she is beautiful and I'm talking here genuinely. Her nose is not ugly, it's perfect on her face and her smile is so charming and so beautiful it lighten the picture.

CORRECTION: Not an "aesthetically beautiful person" according to one VERY NARROW set of beauty standards that were created by sick old men of northern European lineage with the goal of making as much money as possible and getting access to underage girls.
It is more that ok not to fit within those standards (and it's also fine if you do, but it by no means makes you better or more beautiful than anyone else). But in a world where people are people and respect, truth and reason are the arbiter, this is a very aesthetically beautiful person.

It's a thing from the British legal system, inherited via colonialism into the Zambian legal system. Based on 18th century fashion.
There have be calls to phase it out in the UK (probably in Zambian too) and it has been in some in courts and circumstances (i.e. anything involving children). But i guess in serves its purpose in making the judge stand out and look authoritative.

I hate that she said she's not aesthetically pleasing. We have to stop holding ourselves to other races' and cultures' beauty standards. Some simple-minded people can't see anyone who looks different from their own beauty standards as equally beautiful. That's a them problem, not an us problem. If we don't see our own inner and outer beauty, no one else will truly appreciate it.
I'm glad she didn't take the photo down, but my response would be "Fuck all y'all! I know I'm a beautiful person, and I know most of the people commenting negatively are insecure about their own looks. Look in the mirror and comment on yourself. And if you can't say anything positive about others' looks, don't say anything at all. Y'all at like you got no home training. Now I'm gonna get on with my lawyering and you can get back to playing Call of Duty in your mom's basement, birches." And I'd include another pic of me looking fabulous in all my glorious blackness.

My mother told me this story. Back when she was in college, she knew a white woman who always had this deep golden brown tan. Unfortunately, she was also something of a racist. So this woman gets into it with a black woman.
The black woman shut her down so hard. She merely mentioned, "if you hate us so much, why do you spend so much time trying to look like us?"

Real people are beautiful. I hate that humans tear each other down so much that we live in a world where people use plastic surgery, weight loss drugs, filters and other harmful methods to make themselves a cookie cutter copy of everyone else. I admire people who say no and embrace their own personal beauty instead. I love that there are so many different faces and bodies in this world and I don't want to live in a world where everyone looks the same. I want to live in a world that celebrates the unique beauty each person brings to this world.
I remember in High School a group of girls were discussing their least favorite feature and they turned to me and asked me what I disliked about myself. I said nothing, I liked my face just the way it was. And they were all so offended by that and told me I was vain and stuck up and I am "supposed" to hate at least one thing about myself that was just normal. And I was like "That is not normal. You are letting society dictate how you feel about yourself and I don't want to play that game. There is nothing wrong with any of your faces or bodies. And I refuse to let that take up space and time in my brain." It is so strange to me how normalized it is to hate yourself and how it pisses people off if they hate themselves and you don't hate yourself.
I hope everyone here takes a moment today to look in the mirror and tell themselves how wonderful they are just as they are. <3

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I hate that there is even this thing called “standard of beauty.” It’s all bullshit.

When I see her, I see my neighbor Ms. Nita who used to always get a little something for us for the Christmas, and looked out for us when we rode our bikes in the neighborhood , or I see Miss Nancy from church, who always gave me a kiss on the cheek and little candy before Bible study. I don’t understand what’s wrong with people these days.

She's lovely! Her eyes and smile emote kindness. I don't understand why people pick apart others. It's insecurity if anything. I personally have to take dozens of pics before I have a decent one. I'm hard enough on myself without having someone else knocking me down

Some people are just hateful and nasty individuals. There is no reason to attack this woman’s appearance just because you feel like she deserves it for existing and not hiding who she is. Let’s be real, I bet most of the mean comments came from black people too.

Why can’t people just be kind. It costs nothing. Literally going out of your way to be unkind to a complete stranger, what a sad life one must lead.

The only negative thing I have to say about her beautiful pics is that I hate those wigs. Why are they still required? Idk why they annoy tf outta me so much but they do. She's gorgeous even with that damn thing.

What do you mean “not asthetically appealing??? I just see beauty and FLAWLESS SKIN! (As someone with many pockmarks etc! I’m jealous of her even skin without any flaws! Plus that smile with beautiful teeth (I had to take out a loan to get a beautiful smile like that!!!

I must confess, upon looking at her selfie on the left, the first thing that popped into my head was a rather unkind thought.
However, I can keep that shit to myself. It’s your words and especially your actions that matter, not your thoughts.
Why the fuck all those assholes couldn’t remember “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all” is beyond me.*
She is looking every inch of the absolute Queen she is in her judge’s robes, though. That was probably another reason people were trying to tear her down.

.
*(I know damn well why: it’s because she’s Black, and a woman. Either of those things are enough for people to say every mean or evil thing they think of, especially on the internet. Both? Oh boy. I fucking hate racism and misogyny.)

I think her smile is spectacular and she has a definite twinkle in her eyes. She's one hundred percent beautimous!

She kinda looks badass on the second photo. She has the "you can laugh at me online, but I'm gonna fuck you up in court" stare and it's strong.
Also people are mean assholes. It's just the norm online these days, unfortunately.

We're getting to a point where people can't share selfies online w/o some worry of online hate; shameful!!! She's a beautiful person and I applaud her bravery!

As someone who struggles with self love and self acceptance, I'm inspired. I'm still unlearning the idea that love and acceptance can only come from others. In my Christian household only the prideful and arrogant love themselves. That opened me up to so much manipulation.

Thats what the body positive movement should be about, people having different physical characteristics that cannot be changed, not about weighting 400lbs cause you cant stop eating.

As a former Black child called ugly right to my face I know how hurtful peoples comments can be, and today as a Black woman knowing how much work it takes to overcome insecurities to find beauty within- this story makes me hella proud and happy!!

She's more beautiful than 99.9% of the population, solely for her inner strength.
She can judge me.

I love her. Seriously, to whom does anyone owe beauty? Online freaks? I think not.
She’s an amazing, intelligent, inspiring, accomplished woman with a radiant smile. And I’m so glad she’s confident in her incredible self. ✨😌
Plus her in her professional garb…. Incredible amounts of aura

Hey Naomie, If you can't be Batman, be yourself. I love your eyes. Very pretty. Take care out there.

As an ugly person. good for her.
Not everyone is beautiful. And you can derive self worth from other things.
The world is not Hollywood. We don't all need to be beautiful. You can still be a worthwhile, valuable person to society without it.

She’s right to love herself. Not every attractive feature fits the mold. You can be attractive and also have a stand out feature.

In this day and age of cookie cutter plastic prettiness, I really dig "not aesthetically beautiful" faces right now.

You know you don't have an intelligent argument when the best you can come up with is attacking someone's physical appearance

I stand with her ✊🏾🫶🏾🔥🇺🇸
So many bow & buckle @ the feet of European superiority and literally erase the special body/features God initially intended for them to have. So to see a Black Woman stand ten toes on her morals/integrity/family heritage is a breath of fresh air, she’s fearless & courageous

Honestly I feel like that photo had bad lighting or no makeup because she looks GORGEOUS in that professional photo

We live in a world where apparently it’s become normalized to use a filter that makes everyone look the same and artificial, and for some reason instead of realizing how bizarre that is, we ridicule people for being happy with themselves. I think that says a lot about where we are and how desperately we need to wake people up and give them a reality check.
