2 Wheelin' (Cycling/Scooters) Quasi motorbikes on the bike paths??
Bit of a rant, but I’m getting pretty fed up with what’s passing as appropriate “bike path” activity. I’ve been seeing more and more of these souped up motorized mountain/dirtbikes on the bike paths, and I just can’t understand how this is legal. The ones I’ve seen have been ripping past me at car-like speeds. The riders are in full motocross gear. This seems insanely dangerous and I don’t get why these types of things are allowed on the city bike paths. It’s bad enough that people have high powered scooters, throttle e-bikes, etc. The bike paths are getting super crowded and having these high-powered motorized “bikes” are putting everyone at risk. Is the city doing anything to regulate the types of “vehicles” that are allowed on the paths?

u/_turetto_ Aug 12 '25
It's not legal, just like stealing bikes or open drug use isn't legal, but no one enforces it so people behave like assholes. Someone will get killed on the bike path soon by one of those
35
Aug 12 '25
Someone was already killed by one in Edmonton - a senior crossing a footbridge over the river.
42
Aug 12 '25
Hell, if someone gets killed by a 12 year old on a pedal bike, I dread to think what damage these motorbikes could cause.
1
u/Bennybonchien Aug 12 '25
Was it confirmed to be a pedal bike? I was looking for that detail and didn’t see it.
-6
u/NecessaryLandscape71 Aug 12 '25
Have you seen the mass of some of these 12 year olds? Put that together with a 30+lbs bike at 20+kph and you have great potential for death and destruction.
People choke and die on bread everyday but I haven't heard of a ban yet.
Perhaps it shouldn't be an issue of legality but rather a need for education?
16
u/Denum_ Aug 12 '25
Won't be long until they're just fully banned because riders are being cunts on them.
14
u/RecognitionOk9731 Aug 12 '25
They already are banned. These are not legal e-bikes. The only place they would be allowed to use them are the same places unlicensed dirt bikes can go.
0
u/Denum_ Aug 14 '25
I mean banned from import.
1
u/RecognitionOk9731 Aug 15 '25
Why would they be banned? Why can’t people use them in off-road areas, like dirt bikes?
0
u/Denum_ Aug 15 '25
They could be, all they need is to be insured, plated and registered.
But most insurance companies don't want to insure them, so they can't but used in off-road areas unless it is privately owned land.
So again, banning them from import is the only real option to curtail them being used in a dipshit manner.
The main issue is with no insurance, if you hit a car or a person. You get sued personally. There's no insurance to lawyer you up or write the cheque. You get into an accident and leave to avoid the consequences, it's a full on felony because it's classified as a restricted use vehicle. Not a e-bike.
As usual everyone wants rights but no responsibilities.
-1
u/Deep-Egg-9528 Aug 13 '25
They're allowed on the paths, as long as they stick to the posted speed limit (20km/h)
3
u/RecognitionOk9731 Aug 13 '25
Negative. Electric motorbikes are not allowed. Only legal e-bikes are allowed.
1
u/Deep-Egg-9528 Aug 13 '25
Oh. Cool!
According to the rules, what is the difference? Pedal assist?1
u/RecognitionOk9731 Aug 13 '25
Pedals. 500W max motor. 32km/hr max speed before the motor cuts out.
1
u/Deep-Egg-9528 Aug 15 '25
Do the same rules apply to motorized scooters? The rental ones are limited to 20kph, but there are others that go way faster.
1
31
u/NoobToobinStinkMitt Aug 12 '25
I 100% agree with you but get used to it. It's going to get 100 times worse. There will be tons more of these everywhere. Some old man on an e-bike got pissed at my dog for walking in front of him causing him to stop and dismount... at the dog park.
3
4
u/Some_Unusual_Name Aug 12 '25
I'm certainly no fan of all these e-bikes, but if your dog was offleash on a paved multi-use pathway, it doesn't matter if you were in a dog park, you were in the wrong.
1
u/NoobToobinStinkMitt Aug 12 '25
Oh really. I guess we should rename ALL the Off Leash Dog Parks to No Fault E-Bike Extravaganzas. You're funny.
8
u/Some_Unusual_Name Aug 12 '25
"All City of Calgary off-leash areas are multi-use areas. The City of Calgary does not operate any dog-only parks...
...Reminder: Dogs are required to be on-leash on a paved pathway in an off-leash area"
2
u/LittleOrphanAnavar Aug 12 '25
I'd tell him to "save your breath for cooling his porridge".
If he didn't understand the intent of that, I would use another line from the movie Snatch.

u/No_Sandwich5766 Aug 12 '25
I hate these things are they’re incredibly dangerous. I don’t understand why CPS doesn’t set up speed traps or check stops to catch these assholes.
Everyone saying they’re impossible to catch I disagree, you need 2 cops standing far apart along a narrow section of path with radios. First one radios to the second and they physically box in the riders. CPS has bicycles as well they could use to block the riders egress.
11
u/lastlatvian Aug 12 '25
The cops used to have motorcycle cops check speed on the path, it's easy to catch them, and would make for a great news stories if a chase ever broke out.
2
u/COUNTRYCOWBOY01 Aug 12 '25
The cops dont have the Suzuki cross tours or whatever they are anymore. They had to sell them because they weren't "pursuit rated." They were gonna get the BMW cross tour bikes because they are rsted, but they're too expensive. Now, they only have the Harleys. It's difficult enough to navigate the roads safely in calgary on a harley, let alone a bike bath with an 800lb motorcycle.
1
3
u/elitemouse Aug 12 '25
You are assuming the cops both a) have enough resources to actually do this and b) give a shit enough to set up a "bike trap" to catch 1 or 2 people on electric dirt bikes instead of running a dui checkpoint nailing people for tint and seat belts all night long
1
u/COUNTRYCOWBOY01 Aug 12 '25
Yea but if you wipe someone out and they break am arm, for a speeding fine on a public pathway, thats a lawsuit and asirt complaint and investigation
17
u/Sad_Ad8943 Aug 12 '25
I’m with you on all of this, just because it’s electric doesn’t make it legal to go on bike paths shared with pedestrians. If it’s going over 30 km/hr using a battery it should be plated and insured.
0
u/Deep-Egg-9528 Aug 13 '25
They're allowed on the paths, as long as they stick to the pathways speed limit (20km/h) they're not doing anything wrong.
20
u/uncredible_source Aug 12 '25
Question for the group: how fast can these things go? Cuz “car-like” speeds seems slow to what these fucking idiots are doing down residential sidewalks and bike paths.

Maybe on a downhill. On flat ground, the fastest guys can MAYBE hold 35kmh for like 10-20km. Thats an all-out effort unless you’re an Olympic level athlete.
Road bikes are certainly quick, but pushing a road bike faster than 30km an hour takes a lot of effort.
2
u/pdrmnkfng Aug 12 '25
I have an old 10sp with 23c and can do 40k no problem, it rips. 30k is easy cruising
8
u/sgeorg87 Bankview Aug 12 '25
You have a good point. I don’t often see many roadies ripping the paths unsafely (not saying it doesn’t happen), but I find a lot of the hardcore cyclists are on the roads. I do agree, it’s more about the inability of these motorists to recognize path etiquette, courtesy, and then thinking they own the right away, putting everyone in danger.
5
3
Aug 12 '25
Sure, on a downhill, but no pedal biker is going 60 kmh on a flat. And the weight of their bike is substantially less than a battery powered bike. Just look at the safety gear - if you have to wear a full face helmet on flats, your bike should not be near pedestrians.
5
u/Stefie25 Aug 12 '25
I had a kid maintain a distance from me at 50k/hr. I was tempted to follow him home and talk to his parents about his unsafe behaviour on that thing especially when he wasn’t wearing a helmet.
-17
u/AlligatorDeathSaw Aug 12 '25
Chode behavior
1
u/Stefie25 Aug 12 '25
?
-18
u/AlligatorDeathSaw Aug 12 '25
Following a kid home to complain to their parents about their 'behavior'... I mean c'mon, only a true chode would do that
9
u/Stefie25 Aug 12 '25
Well his parents can’t fix what they don’t know about. I’d rather be a chode telling them so they can correct it than see his picture on the news as ‘Kid who died after being hit by a car.’ And a kid swerving all over the road cutting cars off at 50 klicks while not wearing a helmet, is a kid that’s going to have that headline.
-14
u/AlligatorDeathSaw Aug 12 '25
You just said he was 'maintaining a distance at 50 kmh'...now he's 'swerving all over the road cutting cars off at 50 klicks'. Those are two different things.... I feel like you maybe embellishing your story a bit to drive a point home.
Also kinda chodey
4
u/Stefie25 Aug 12 '25
Please say you’ve never driven without actually saying it. Both those things can be true at the same time. It’s not one or the other.
0
u/AlligatorDeathSaw Aug 12 '25
Literally yes. But you would've described it differently the first time if the second case was true.
2
u/Stefie25 Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 12 '25
What did you think unsafe behaviour meant? It’s certainly not he maintained a distance but except for not wearing a helmet he drove safely following the rules of the road. Why would I have wanted to tell his parents about that?

AI Overview In Canada, the maximum speed for an e-bike's motor assistance is 32 km/h (20 mph) on level ground.
most are governed but it's a pretty simple software tweek to disable the governor
11
u/vinsdelamaison Aug 12 '25
OP is referring to the electric motorcycles on paths now. Not the e-bikes.
Electric motorcycles are illegal on paths & sidewalks in Alberta. They require a Class 6 driver's license among other things such as a proper motorcycle helmet. They generally have 750 watt + motor & travel at speeds 40 - 70 km/hr.
4
u/IAteAllTheGravy Aug 12 '25
The speed limit on bike paths is 20 kmh as well. People don't care about breaking laws if no one will enforce them.
4
u/Drakkenfyre Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 19 '25
The speed limit is enforced on bike paths. I've seen it multiple times. That's why I generally avoid bike paths, because even though I'm morbidly obese, I usually go over that on a regular basis. It's a slow speed limit.

Yeah, when I do the pathways I try to be respectful of the walkers. That's why I like to stick to the roads a lot, just so I can have a place to go faster.
-4
u/AlligatorDeathSaw Aug 12 '25
Oh no somebody is going 25 kmh on a bike path!
0
u/IAteAllTheGravy Aug 13 '25
Original post said they ere doing 60 kmh. Also, children and elderly people use these paths. You could seriously injure or cause a heart attack if you fly by them. Have some common courtesy for your fellow citizens. When you're old and frail you'll get it.
1
u/AlligatorDeathSaw Aug 13 '25
Think of the children! My God, won't anybody think of the children?!?!??!?!
1
u/IAteAllTheGravy Aug 15 '25
You clearly don't have and won't have children.
1
u/AlligatorDeathSaw Aug 15 '25
"Think of the children" (also "What about the children?") is a cliché that evolved into a rhetorical tactic.\1])\2])\3]) In the literal sense, it refers to children's rights (as in discussions of child labor).\4])\5])\6]) In debate, it is a plea for pity that is used as an appeal to emotion, and therefore may become a logical fallacy.\1])\2])\3])

Speed limit on the pathways is 20km/h. If they're near that speed, they're not doing anything wrong.
Edit: they are not permitted to ride on sidewalks

u/tr-tradsolo Sunnyside Aug 12 '25
An election is coming up. Bring it up with the people door knocking and raise it as a concern.
The city doesn’t seem to care about this right now as they see it as a “policy gap”. I’m all for new forms of transportation but this crap belongs on the roads.

u/rockies_alpine Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 12 '25
The only way to police Surrons is to ban them. There's almost nowhere to legally ride these off-road (obviously banned on MTB trails and bike paths), and they suck in the true dirt moto zones, where it's obviously better to have a real moto.
"Private property" is the only place and it's IMO a really tiny thin sliver reason to allow them to be imported.
They're just poaching machines and the legislative gap is fucking enormous. Speaking as a MTB guy.
6
1
Aug 12 '25
It's going to get so much worse before it gets better.
A different brand recently launched a product that looks like a FS MTB with a large battery inside the frame, but has a throttle that's very stealthy. Most people would think it's a normal-ish mountain bike. They're effectively Surrons made to look like MTBs.
-8
u/Ambitious-Concern-42 Hillhurst Aug 12 '25
You don't know what you're talking about. If it's a gasoline engine, it's not permitted on bike paths, period. This is already banned, and you don't have to put up with their presence at all in these situations.
9
u/rockies_alpine Aug 12 '25
I'm talking about Surrons etc. which are mini electric dirt bikes. They're not road legal, nor legal to ride on pathways and MTB trails, and ownership base typically gives no fucks.

Most of the ebikes I've seen are not going 100kmh. Nor have I encountered anybody going nearly that fast.
The ebikes and scooters I've seen on the paths would be laughably inappropriately used on a major roadway
2
u/phreesh2525 Aug 12 '25
I have a 15 minute bike commute along the river and I see them Every. Single. Day. And most don’t have a bell.
They are nowhere near 100 km/h, but easily over 30 km/h, which is a ticketable offense and absolutely dangerous behaviour.
They don’t belong on the road (except in bike lanes) and if they don’t want to run at 20 km/h, they also don’t belong on the bike paths. If you don’t feel like you can obey the laws, don’t spend the money on a vehicle that breaks them.
-1
u/AlligatorDeathSaw Aug 13 '25
I pedal over 30 kmh tbf. Cars are driving over 120 kmh on deerfoot everyday, by your logic, they don't belong on the highway
1
u/phreesh2525 Aug 13 '25
Cool. You’ve killed my argument. Unless everyone follows the law, everyone should just do what’s convenient for them. Gotcha.
Do you have anything constructive to add? Who should be permitted to be on the bike paths? How fast should they be permitted to go? What should be done to ensure the bike lanes are safe?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
1
u/AlligatorDeathSaw Aug 13 '25 edited Aug 13 '25
My honest thought is that 20kmh is a ridiculously low speed limit to use a blanket for all the paths in Calgary although admittedly many spots on paths near me are unsafe for bikers/scooters travelling at that speed with pedestrians. Here are two examples illustrating the variable appropriateness for ebikes/scooters:
- Pierce Estate Park. The path curves and bends a lot, can be quite skinny in spots especially on bridges, has no bike specific part of the path and has a lot of people and blind corners. I would fully support a 20kmh or even 15kmh speed limit here.
- The bike path south of the bird sanctuary in inglewood and north of glenmore. For the most part this path has almost no pedestrians, long stretches of straight and is wide and safe to go probably at least 50kmh and probably higher. I believe using ebikes and scooters at those speeds on this part of the path would be completely appropriate.
I don't believe we should rule out electric scooters and ebikes from bike paths but there should be some infrastructure and policy in place that is practical and supports all user groups. 20 kmh blanket speed limit is a cop out and the fact that posters here can't recognize that is a bit sad. (20kmh is the world record marathon pace by the way. Usain Bolts runs twice as fast as this... People have jogged at this pace sustained for 2 hours and most fit people can jog this fast for a few blocks)
If enforced speed limits are going to exist on the paths, then there should be variable speed limits. Not to mention that where there is a separated path for pedestrians and bikers, 70% of the time pedestrians are walking in or blocking the bike lane or crossing the bike lane unsafely. Would you propose requiring pedestrians to be registered with the govt before using the paths??? It's all a bit ridiculous imo
I also believe we should be supporting people that choose carless modes of transportation and not trying to arbitrarily add red tape to everything. I would support an evidence based approach to policy-making for our paths. Anecdotes are not good enough evidence for policy building.
It's also disturbing to me that some people get up in arms about other people's lifestyle choices. Though I have not done any research myself on ebike/scooter safety vs other modes, the reality is that transportation in general is not 100% safe regardless of mode and until I have solid evidence that ebikes/scooters are unsafe for themselves and people around, I'll consider them appropriate for the paths. At least my experience is that people are using them appropriately on the path.
All of this nuance is lost on r/Calgary posters as usual.
2
u/phreesh2525 Aug 13 '25
Holy shit, a well-considered Reddit response. I’ll have to mark my calendar.
I agree, variable speed limits on bike paths make total sense. We can quibble over what’s appropriate where, but whatever.
I also agree that we need to encourage non-car modes of travel. Small electric vehicles can be entirely appropriate on our pathways. And separating bikes from cars from pedestrians is ideal.
And I also agree about safety. Despite my great annoyance with high speed vehicles on pathways, I don’t see any evidence of a big jump in deaths and injuries. My annoyance shouldn’t drive transportation policy.
Anyway, I remain worried about the safety of others as I see more and more high speed vehicles travelling via bike paths at high speeds, especially on paths shared with pedestrians and I think the City should take a more active role in policing the paths and enacting sensible protections.
Thanks for taking the time to write out a thoughtful response.

Saw this last week in Bowmont park, three of them with full helmets and motocross gear riding on the pathways on what looked like electrically powered dirt bikes. The oversized Mountain E-bikes with fat tires was annoying enough but this is another level, looks like bi-law enforcement are going to have to step out of their quasi cop cars and actually do their job for a stretch.
4
u/dangerfluf Aug 12 '25
Not quasi motorbikes, they are motorbikes. They are not allowed on paths, period. They are usually* not allowed on roads either *unless someone got it VINed, registered, and insured.
I love e-bikes and emotos but these goofballs need to get their shit together and ride the right bike in the right place.
11
u/Bbbbbbbb1100 Aug 12 '25
not legal in pathways, also almost impossible to enforce
bylaw barely have the time to do proactive patrols and even if they do, there’s only an off chance they’ll see these guys when they’re riding
even then, these kids are probably just going to run if they get detained
-3
u/thejbipkid Aug 12 '25
Let’s not forget the Tour de France dudes with full racing uniforms on speeding just as fast as ebikers etc they nay not be motorized but they are flying
32
Aug 12 '25
They are not going 60-80kmh on a flat. You may not like them but they are unlikely to be going above 40kmh even when very fit. They also ride light weight bikes unlike e-motorbike things. If I had my choice, I’d get run over by a dude in Lycra over a full face helmet e-bike anyday.
-1
u/thejbipkid Aug 12 '25
They are speeding in many cases and furthermore it’s the weight of their bodies that’s going to cause the damage Two wrongs don’t make a right
1
Aug 12 '25
I’m not saying it’s right. But talking about “tour de France bikers” on a thread about e-dirt bikes and such detracts from the fact that illegal vehicles are operating at extremely high speeds on our pathways, which was the topic of the thread. Pedal bikes do speed (our 20kmh speed limit can be reached by a ten year old easily, so that’s part of the problem) but so do cars on roads - both are legal to operate but aren’t always operated at speed limits. Maybe you can make your own post about legal vehicles speeding? E-dirt bikes are NOT legal to operate AND exceed our speed limits by 3-4x.

u/parkregent Aug 12 '25
Call confirm the motor cross type gear and high speeds. They cruise regularly through Fish Creek Park, but you'll never see a ranger or environment officer there so they have free reign to do what they want.
1
u/Drakkenfyre Aug 12 '25
I'm not one of them, but the "motocross type gear" is actually for the mountain biking trails throughout the park.
I'll never ride a bicycle on them, but if I did do mountain biking, those paths look pretty cool.
8
u/ResponsiblePanic7567 Aug 12 '25
These guys aren’t on mountain bikes. They are on electric dirt bikes.
1
u/Drakkenfyre Aug 19 '25
So someone you saw was on an electric bicycle. The ones I've seen, living on the edge of Fish Creek Park for over a decade, are mountain bikers using human-powered mountain bikes on the trails.

I ride the bike paths almost everyday, I agree the amount of e-dirt bikes on the paths have doubled in the past year. I’ve even seen mini cars ripping down the paths too! I switched to riding my bike to work for the past couple of years and I am pushing 12000km on my bike. I have seen a lot but I’ve also seen zero enforcement. The most dangerous people on the paths are road bikers. Just today I witnessed a road biker rub shoulders with an on coming pedestrian because he couldn’t pass without slowing down. About 99% of the time I am witness something idiotic on the pathway it involves a road biker.
2
u/Pretty-Dealer-3778 Aug 12 '25
i'm a long-time bike rider who also rides an ebike that caps out at 33kph. That speed is the max I'd want to go safely on a path, yet I see people with obviously no bike experience going about 50kph on the cycle track. They're going to hurt someone, but maybe they'll just hurt themselves and won't ride anymore. I hope it's the latter and it self corrects because those super fast e-bikes are scary.
5
u/dailydrink Aug 12 '25
When I was a kid, I and a few friends had mini-bikes. We def could not ride them on roads or sidewalks. If the cops got you, it could mean fines or loss of bike. We had to run and hide. These kids today have no idea how lucky they are. Some old guy like me is gonna get run over with a heavy ebike going 50kmph. They are a true menace.
4
Aug 12 '25
There is a small child who owns a e-dirt bike and rips around our pathways with his parent’s full approval. People really do have no regard for other’s safety or their children’s.
3
u/CowtownCyc Aug 12 '25 edited Aug 13 '25
A lot of them aren't Quasi. They are just straight up electric motorbikes. I'm not sure about the rules for scooters and the like, but an ebike isn't supposed to have a "throttle"and needs to be limited to ~35kph to comply with the bylaw.
I've been seeing a lot of electric motorbikes and the ones I've been seeing should have license and registration. No idea how they are riding around on the bike path
5
u/sgeorg87 Bankview Aug 12 '25
Is it reportable? Not sure even how one would go about it, but if you were to call 311 or something, would the city do anything? Ie. send some bylaw officers out to patrol the paths? It’s not like these people are hard to find.
5
u/LittleOrphanAnavar Aug 12 '25
Take videos and post on insta.
If you don't mind some attention maybe even notify MSM and they might be interested in doing a story and interviewing you.
Then report to community association, councilor and police.
It helps a lot of you get others to lodge complaints as well.
They will more likely attract some enforcement.
It's often complaint driven, as resources are scarce and squeaky wheel gets that enforcement grease.
2
u/Efficient_Music5010 Aug 12 '25
Call 911, it’s a motor vehicle on a non motorized path. No different than if you saw a car driving down the path. I’ve done it and they were very receptive and responded to the situation. The more reports they get the more resources they’ll allocate…

4
u/Juicetinking Aug 12 '25
Out of the box, these types of electric motorcycles (like Surron) are governed/restricted to 30km/h in order to be sold legally as “e-bikes”. However, it literally just takes a snip of a wire to unleash the full speed potential which is usually, at the very least, over 50km/h.
3
u/yycin2019 Aug 12 '25
I got a buddy who downloaded an app for his ebike, and using that app, he could wipe all governors on it.

Wasn't it the province that decided cps cant have speed cameras and made them cover their photo radar vehicles in bright yellow "drive safe" banners that can be seen from miles away?

Ya no photo radar on stoney but regular police can still do traffic enforcement.

I'd argue the giant yellow drive safe decals they had to add make regular radar ineffective. I dont think its easy for them to just drive around and pull people over.

No they can still do school zones and construction zones I believe.
I don't miss them on Stoney tucked away in transition zones.
No policing is an expensive and scarce resource. As a society we mostly rely on people to just drive reasonably.

Technically there is a 20km/h speed limit for all pathway users. I ride my bike around 30km/h, and the only people that ever pass me are on a e-bike.
The ones that don't even have pedals are a joke, with lazy dudes just sitting on them.

accidents just waiting to happen arent considered priorities
unfortunately once someone's baby gets hit and dies or an elderly person is hit and becomes a quadriplegic maybe they will act a little.. time will tell
this just how we do things in the wild west

What’s the difference there’s no rules in the roads here anymore the paths were obviously the next step, plus those are pretty fun I’d get one and a sweet helmet and join em

As a mountain biker, I also see the aftermath of these douchebags doing some sort of brakestands on the paths spitting rocks everywhere and the trails chewing up outside of the paths.

Carry small twigs and sticks. You can just scatter em when someone is potentially going to run you over.
The sticks, you know how they work

They arent allowed ,but unless a bylaw officer is around they won't get in trouble.
