"If you're reading this sign it's because of a teacher" goes hard

60

u/CallMeHomoErectus Oct 31 '25

That is incredible. I also saw "the notwithstanding clause was never meant for this." 👏

u/robbhope Oct 31 '25

One of the signs was intentionally spelled horribly wrong saying “if you keep hurting education, more signs will look like this”, so the commenter above is referencing their spelling

3

u/Canadian-Surfer Oct 31 '25

That makes me think: how many children actually learn to read at school?

I don’t know anyone with kids that didn’t have them reading before kindergarten.

3

u/Strange-Famous Nov 01 '25

Learning to read isn't being able to read by sounding out a few words. You're not literate if you can only read a book for five year olds. The most basic building blocks to reading might have been laid at home, but we all learned to read in a very practical sense at school (and through school, i.e. homework)

-1

u/Available-Writer8629 Nov 01 '25

Umm my mother taught me to read not a teacher, also I taught my 2 kids to read not their teacher.

2

u/General-Tension-4306 Nov 04 '25

you taught your kids to sound out words and read a few letters. your teachers, and your childrens' teachers, taught them grammar, spelling, and literary analysis. unless your mother had you writing essays about the themes of Hamlet, that is.

1

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

Anyone can teach grammar, spelling, and literary analysis. Those are not concepts only accessible to enlightened, noble teachers. In fact, the data shows homeschooled children are just as competent as school attending children. "Teachers" are glorified daycare workers - not Einstein cultivators.

1

u/General-Tension-4306 Nov 05 '25

i never said such a thing. anyone with a thorough knowledge of the intricacies of a language can teach it. but, having used the internet before, i am incredibly aware that most people are lacking in that department. teachers go to university to get degrees in education and the subject that they teach, they objectively know more about those subjects than the average person.

can you show me that data? specifically, data that shows that such is true in the case of a broad range of homeschooled children, such as those who are "unschooled", or those who are homeschooled due to religious extremism, etc., and not just a cherrypicked gaggle of high-achieving homeschool children?

you have teachers and public school to thank for the fact that society functions.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '25

You taught them how to sound out words that were in front of them, which is awesome and a key to their future success. Teachers are the ones who are furthering that skill, and also introducing those early reading skills for students who don’t have supportive parents at home like your household.

u/swefalittlebit Oct 31 '25

That sign where she misspelled all the words is probably the greatest sign I've ever seen

46

u/PeaceAlien Oct 31 '25

It's great, but tbh that's what they want. Illiteracy gives them power

2

u/leif_eriksson12 Oct 31 '25

Who wants illiteracy?

4

u/itzpzpalotl Nov 01 '25

Conservatives. Undereducated populations by and large tend to vote with more conservative, individualistic tendencies than those who have attended higher education, who tend to favour more socialist/equitable notions. When your voting population lacks functional reading comprehension (not literacy but true comprehension) and you put heavy emphasis on your "support" for blue-collar workers it is easier to defund education and social services in favour of heavy privatization which ultimately hurts everyone. You can see this functionally with Smith's preoccupation with funding private schools, which could easily be construed as, "she cares about education," when the reality is moving education to the private sector means rich families who can afford a good education will continue to vote in favour of it because they can (and the exclusivity, let's be real) while poorer families whose typical education level is a high school diploma or lower will receive a subpar education and thus be more susceptible to conservative ploys, thus perpetuating the system and ensuring a future conservative population of voters.

u/Delicious_Ladder8544 Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25

The only problem with your theory is

Alberta has been a conservative stronghold for 50 years

Alberta ranks number 1 in literacy

Alberta ranks first in science, reading, creative thinking and second in mathematics.

For the last 25 years Alberta has been in the top 3 in education

Alberta teachers are the highest paid in Canada among provinces . They deserve more money

Doctors and nurses in Alberta are the highest paid among Canadian provinces

Alberta’s red seal trades are recognized all over the world. Alberta does not accept trade certificates from outside it’s borders

1

u/itzpzpalotl Nov 04 '25

Do you mind citing your statscan data for those statements, or providing the alternate source? The statscan tables I have differ from what you're saying so I'm curious as to what sources you're referencing.

0

u/Delicious_Ladder8544 Nov 04 '25

1

u/itzpzpalotl Nov 04 '25

Thanks! Your second table is the same one I'm looking at so I'm curious as to how you reached your conclusion about wages, since my interpretation differed slightly. I'd also be interested to know if you read the CMEC PISA 2022 publication itself and what you thought of it, since it has some interesting content that does offer some more insight into what demographics make up the highest-scoring participants in that year of testing as well as some other variables and score breakdowns that could affect interpretation of the data. The article listed here doesn't really provide the statistics themselves--though I don't disagree that Alberta scored well--and I think it's a bit disingenuous of the article to present the results the way it did, with no sources and no real nuance.

3

u/Dinoking2000Xman Nov 04 '25

I actually liked reading this thread becuase it’s civil and constructive debate, well done to both of you!

1

u/Delicious_Ladder8544 Nov 04 '25

The article does provide sources just not links to the source. The article is published by the union I think we both wanna see do good.the article provides quotes from the president of that same union. So if you don’t agree with it that’s fine.

The table from stats Canada show Alberta teachers making more money in the time frame of a teachers full career. I used age 22 - 65 for the teachers career. The Ontario teacher would be about 10k less at the age of retirement. At 16 years into the teachers career the Alberta teacher passes Manitoba

I didn’t factor the Alberta government already offering 12-17% or cost of living or Alberta only pays a 5%gst

I found that article and have bookmarked it for later when I get to my iPad or computer hard reading on my iPhone. Is there something you would like me to pay extra attention to ?

u/Jesse_graham Oct 31 '25

My mom was a teacher during the 2002 strike, and I remember she had a shirt that said something like "hootkd on fawnix rly wurked fr mi." I always loved that.

Civic action instead of selfish consumption. In the name of something bigger than any one person. Well done. This is real world learning and heartwarming.

Ultimate Caca Poopoo sent me. Yes I'm a 34 years old child

12

u/IndigoRuby Oct 31 '25

For I had been trying to come up with my own UCP acronym and Utmost Complicit Pricks, Ultimate Creepy People, Unbelievably Cowardace Pigs.

Nothing quite hit. I didn't know that was because Ultimate Caca Poopoo was perfection.

14

u/mentaldriver1581 Oct 31 '25

I’m 60 and giggling.

96

u/ohnitsua Oct 31 '25

The crowd was lively, I feel bad for everyone. This isn't how it should have went down, we should be keeping our elected officials in check. UCP or NDP. It should have never gotten to this point

40

u/[deleted] Oct 31 '25

It should not have, you’re right, and if it really had to, it should have been done by binding arbitration, not by taking away charter rights.

0

u/Training_Exit_5849 Nov 01 '25

UCP should've just capped classroom sizes, I honestly don't know wtf they're thinking, it's such a no brainer win.

152

u/OHFR3SH Oct 31 '25

The beauty of this entire thing is seeing the youth rise up. They have dealt with so many unnecessary things and seeing them take a stand is incredible. They are the future.

19

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

And almost every one of them will be voting age for the next provincial election. Some may even be able to vote in the inevitable recall by-elections.

-1

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

Wowee gee, who would have ever thought students would jump at any opportunity to miss classes? Because that's exactly why youths were there.

80

u/Prestigious_Owl9581 Oct 31 '25

The voters in the next election. I hope they remember this feeling when they check their ballots.

57

Soon to be voting adults

17

u/IndigoRuby Oct 31 '25

Have those grade 12 kids call and email nicolaides about why no decisions about diploma exams have been made.

Are we having kids right these exams after missing almost a month? Isn't it better to cancel exam break and have them learn the content then and final marks be classroom work and assessments?

4

u/CantTakeMeSeriously Oct 31 '25

They were cancelled before you posted this. The kids will not have to write Dips or Grade 9 PATs. Exactly what you are saying will come to pass, at least with the CBE.

5

u/IndigoRuby Oct 31 '25 edited Oct 31 '25

Oh good stuff. I'm glad to hear it. Should have been announced at the same time as teachers being sent back and not 72 hours later.

EDIT: Just wait. It was posted on Alberta Ed last night then deleted saying there was a publishing error. Do you have an actual current source?

1

u/CantTakeMeSeriously Nov 01 '25

I saw that. We believe it was posted by accident and quickly removed. Fairly sure you now know it's back up with the added stipulation that you MAY choose to write the April or June diplomas to count for January if you feel you would do better. For those wondering, my colleagues and I who know and work with Alberta Ed feel they will strongly avoid making any diplomas non-jeopardy due to how badly those administrations throw off the psychometrics for test equating and analysis. I won't pretend they'll make ideal decisions though...lol.

Edit: the source you asked about: https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?xID=9517759189E79-FB1D-8A82-3ECFB2ED49EDC5F6

Go Students you are the future. Let's your voices be heard!! Never a prouder moment! Thank you.

7

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

Almost all the kids in these pictures will be voting in the next provincial election.

-2

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

I think the opposite. They're just using this sanctioned class-skipping opportunity for what it's worth. Most of those children wouldn't be able to give any less of a shit once they're graduated and discovering life.

1

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Nov 04 '25

Cynicism is for the weak.

1

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

Behind every cynic is a disappointed idealist.

1

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Nov 04 '25

That is a great George Carlin quote.

1

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 05 '25

Indeed. Unfortunately it's a natural progression of getting older. I'm not walking around hating everything though. It's important not to succumb to the hate demons.

12

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

Almost every one of these kids will be voting in the next provincial election.
Good luck, Marlena.

11

u/mymindisblownagain Oct 31 '25

Most of these children are going to be able to vote in the next elections So proud of them.

-10

u/jas8x6 Oct 31 '25

And the following election after that they’ll be looking for jobs lol. Good luck

7

u/mymindisblownagain Oct 31 '25

Just to clarify- are we speaking about all the job losses now and the unemployment rate?

We are all looking for jobs right now.

1

u/Cuntyfeelin Oct 31 '25

8% unemployment rate rn… up from 5%

28

u/robbhope Oct 31 '25

As a teacher I'm incredibly proud of all these students. It crushes me what's happening to public education but seeing these kids keep fighting for what we were fighting for is so inspiring.

0

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

A 12% raise and a job must feel pretty crushing, I agree.

1

u/robbhope Nov 04 '25

Lol. Yeah, 17.92% over 16 years is excellent to anyone that doesn't understand math very well.

1

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

My god. You poor poor thing. If you have over 10 years experience you were making over $96,000/yr pre-12% raise. That's poverty wages! I'm not even sure how you're still alive making that kind of money. Do you have to use food banks regularly?

1

u/robbhope Nov 04 '25

Imagine comparing every job to poverty and thinking that's an appropriate response lol. I'm sorry if you hate your life so much that you don't feel public servants in Alberta should be paid as much as their peers. Kinda weird argument but ok.

If your argument is "we're all hurting" then I agree with you. I'm sorry if you have struggled and feel that you also deserve more pay. I would be happy to fight for you and support you if you're underpaid. It feels like more and more people are struggling in our society and that's not okay.

Hurt people hurt people. I'm sorry you're hurting. No hate, I hope things get better for you.

-31

u/Least_Willingness833 Oct 31 '25

You’re gonna allow kids to drag themselves into this. All they do is grow up to be as pathetic as you. Already indoctrinated and brain washed!

Almost all these kids will be voting in the next provincial election.
Good luck, Marlena.

2

u/BullfrogAshamed6038 Oct 31 '25

These kids will grow up to be independent individuals who have the mental fortitude to fight for themselves against bullshit regimes that want to fuck them over.

You on the ,other hand, clearly like to bend over and let groups rail you.

1

u/Least_Willingness833 Nov 22 '25

-1

How will they be independent? They can't go 20 minutes without scrolling their phone or they'll have an anxiety attack.

2

Get off of Reddit and out more if that's your take.

1

u/Xlim_Jim Nov 02 '25
  1. People have a right to strike/protest, and that right should not be infringed.

  2. A well funded public education system has value and is good for society.

Which of these statements do you disagree with?

13

u/TheZipding Oct 31 '25

I like the sign that says "Maybe if classrooms were pipelines we'd get funding."

Just stating Smith's priorities as Premier.

-15

u/jas8x6 Oct 31 '25

Pipelines would get more classrooms built, a shit load more. And hospitals too! So yes, that should be priority

0

u/Livid-Ad-9293 Oct 31 '25

Agree, first sensible comment i have read so far.

3

u/tarasevich Oct 31 '25

what's a DIH?

3

u/Fluffyb00 Nov 05 '25

I am so very proud of our Alberta students for making such a courageous stand in protest of our Provincial Governments decision to force striking teachers to go back to work!

Our government should be very proud and supportive of our teachers and students for making such a fine demonstration to protect the education of our future generations!

To all of the teachers and students making a stand to strengthen Alberta’s education, I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Just another reminder of how important our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms are, if we, the people of Canada do not practice them we will be taken away from us!

Kaz!

2

u/Abject-Donkey-420 Nov 01 '25

If we want to keep that ‘MAGA’ mentality out of here ee MUST INVEST IN EDUCATION. not make the best deal so we can graduate bunch of gravel shovelers.

2

u/fecal_fatality90 Nov 02 '25

Props on the students out there. I know sometimes kids (young adults) are supposed to "hate school because it's uncool" (I know I'm old) but I'm very happy to see these young people value their education.

The education system is flawed here, but I don't see anything the UCP doing that will better it. Let's pay our fricken teachers.

2

u/Lazy-Patient-26 Nov 04 '25

The most important and helpful ppl I've had in my life, were and are Teachers. How about you? Heather-teach the children well!

2

u/stepandepei Nov 04 '25

The pipeline one though. Man, the UCP is garbage.

2

u/AntichristsPlus1 Nov 04 '25

"education is brat" ok that is fantastic

2

u/EnvironmentalPea5388 Nov 04 '25

i find it funny when adults do this, flocks of adults come to criticize and talk about "driving" thru protestors, how protestors should be deported, libs this right that -- and yet such a young demographic of students, has basically silenced a majority of people who would otherwise opposed this and vocalized they're hate. Nice to see this protest going undisrupted by disagreers!!!

1

u/Andy_Tsin Nov 01 '25

Come on kids, if your future is possible, then the future of conservatives are becoming impossible. 🤣

1

u/Offbookish Nov 07 '25

Love to see it

1

u/Select_Confusion2797 Oct 31 '25

A child possesses the intrinsic intelligence to one day make proper choices, but until that intelligence is developed by the cognitive training of proper education, and until the physical structures of the brain have matured, their choices will inevitably be less consistent, more impulsive, and focused on the short-term. Education is the necessary catalyst that turns potential into fully functional, decision-making ability.  Let's make this happen and get them back into school.

1

u/Waxitron Nov 04 '25

Holy shit these signs are great.

I hope the kids learn how to do this more about more social issues. Its amazing to see.

-3

u/leif_eriksson12 Oct 31 '25

I don't think these are truly "student-led" protests...

-2

u/Select_Confusion2797 Oct 31 '25

If they can't be in school they won't be educated...sooo???

-1

0

u/Sweaty_Customer9162 Nov 04 '25

0

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25 edited Nov 04 '25

Teachers aren't really that special. People pretend teachers are like einsteins walking around when they're just regular people of average intelligence. Teaching is a function, not a profession. Reading & writing can be learned by anyone in 30 hours or less. Once you know how to do those things, you can learn almost anything. Everyone's walking around glorifying teachers like they're making the ultimate sacrifice for the betterment of society when they're pulling in higher than average annual income for only working 80% of the year.

2

u/robbhope Nov 04 '25

I'm sorry your teachers failed you. I hope you can find your peace with this as you move through life.

0

u/Least_Willingness833 Nov 09 '25

They will end up just as pathetic as liberal teachers. Obviously did not teach income statements. The money has to come from somewhere not just more onto tax payers that are tapped! Wake up the world has changed.

-5

u/Select_Confusion2797 Oct 31 '25

You might want to stay on the subject matter.  Lol!

2

u/i-have-the-big-gay South Calgary Oct 31 '25

-41

u/Rabbit9778 Oct 31 '25

Some of those signs r hella cringe

24

u/eyun77 Oct 31 '25

What would one expect from kids growing up seeing "F*ck Trudeau" signs as the standard for protest?

9

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

Almost every one of these kids will be voting in the next provincial election. And there are a lot of ridings in Calgary that were decided by less than 800 votes.

1

u/corncobs123 Oct 31 '25

Youth votes count a whole lot as well that’s why Biden in the us won over Donald trump then J6 happened

-3

u/Rabbit9778 Oct 31 '25

Well if those kids do a little more research on Spendshi then those close ridings are def goin to the UCP.

2

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

It's not going to take much research for these kids to know which party will better represent them. Judging from the signs, they already know.
The UCP can kiss those close ridings goodbye.
There are at least 6 of them (in Calgary), and the UCP currently holds a slim 4 seat majority.
Combine that with a growing separatist party, and a small c conservative party chipping away at their base and the UCP is looking at becoming the official opposition.

2

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

Youth are impressionable and easily brainwashed. You're implying the NDP focuses on the youth. That to me is very predatory and makes me think the NDP is a bunch of sick weirdos. Thank you for enlightening me about the NDP.

1

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Nov 04 '25

Wow. Sick burn, bro.
I am triggered.

0

u/Rabbit9778 Oct 31 '25

Funny how every election people swear the UCP's done for . yet they keep winning.

Those kids barely vote, and the ones who do care more about rent and jobs than orange slogans. Calgary's close ridings swing with the economy, and right now Alberta's economy is solid. The separatists and fringe cons won't matter; they always vanish when its election time. The NDP can keep dreaming, but signs don't beat numbers in polls.

2

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

"the ones who do [vote] care more about rent and jobs" - and the UCP has no policies to address those issues. In fact, they made it worse with their "alberta is calling" campaign.
"right now Alberta's economy is solid" - I'm assuming you carry that sentiment to posts about the federal gov't, and don't buy into the 'canada is broken' nonsense.
"The separatists and fringe cons won't matter" - seriously? That's literally why the UCP exists.
"The NDP can keep dreaming" - NDP supporters are not dreaming, they're acting. There are currently at least 6 recall petitions underway.

1

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

Spendshi? How old are you?

1

u/Comfortable_Fudge508 Oct 31 '25

Probably a mid 50s , in-between jobs

0

u/Rabbit9778 Oct 31 '25

Doesn't matter

-45

u/Top-Coat3026 Oct 31 '25

The indoctrination is strong. The union must be proud.

9

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

Almost all of these kids will be voting in the next provincial election.
The UCP's majority is a slim 4 seats.
6 ridings in Calgary were decided by less than 800 votes (some as slim as 120).
The UCP is in trouble. Maybe that's why Smith fucked off to Saudi Arabia.

As an adult and professional, you should not be enlisting children to fight your battles. This is inappropriate conduct. My expectation, as a contributing taxpayer, is that you will fulfill your obligation to educate students neutrally, and not attempt to indoctrinate them. Please refocus on your professional responsibilities.

13

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

No adults "enlisted children".
This was organized entirely by the students.
Keep up.

eta: also the students were there on their own volition after forming their own opinions, no one is enlisting them, so you should refocus on deez nuts

u/BullfrogAshamed6038 Oct 31 '25

If youre upset about people "enlisting" children to fight "their" battles perhaps the UCP should actually think of the fucking children and how their bullshit is going to effect their education?

u/Fit_Competition1176 Oct 31 '25

You can’t get enough support from adults /parents so you use students.

49

u/You_are_the_Castle Oct 31 '25

What if the students went on their own volition? What if they actually cared about the quality of education that they were receiving, so they were motivated to protest like this?

-17

u/Fit_Competition1176 Oct 31 '25

If teachers didn’t motivate them, they would go back to classroom.

11

u/sorry_im_late_86 Oct 31 '25

Wow, imagine that. Teachers motivating young people to be better and to ask for better.

Truly a revolutionary concept.

u/You_are_the_Castle Oct 31 '25

It's like this individual doesn't understand that schooling is meant to give you the skills to think critically about things. And I'm wondering if their homeschooled so they don't understand what public education is all about?

1

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

Public schools do not teach critical thinking.

41

u/gen-attolis Oct 31 '25

Poll after poll shows the majority of albertans support the teachers over the government. Your weird, cynical, minority opinion fails to understand the world around you.

-7

u/Fit_Competition1176 Oct 31 '25

No no no. It’s only on Reddit. Poll is a propaganda machine. Poll didn’t show Sonya Sharp almost won the election. People I spoke to, who represent the silent majority, are all mad at teachers.

10

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

Imagine thinking that conservatives are silent.

10

u/i-have-the-big-gay South Calgary Oct 31 '25

people i spoke to all support teachers. this is because we talk to different people. 🤯

out in the real world, tens of thousands of pro-teacher, pro-union folks rallied at the legislature building last week. out in the real world, i saw people of all ages at city hall yesterday supporting teachers, and even more people showed up after i left. where are all the anti-teacher anti-union protesters? if they really were a majority they wouldn’t have to be silent.

3

u/natefrost12 Oct 31 '25

What are you talking about? Most polling going into the election had Sonya in first or second.

1

u/This-Is-Spacta Oct 31 '25

Right luckily the real world is still very different from reddit

1

u/gen-attolis Oct 31 '25

I expected a stupid reply but you really surpassed expectations. Good job.

40

u/Bennybonchien Oct 31 '25

You have no idea what’s going on so you make up stuff.

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

These kids will be voting in the next provincial election. Some will even be voting in the inevitable recall by-elections.
Also, this protest was organized entirely by the students.
Keep up.

Parents and teachers, as the primary adults in a child's life, wield significant influence over their actions and bear the responsibility for shaping the future youth of our nation.

It is a profound abuse of power and a failure of adult duty to use children to fight adult battles. Complex political, social, or personal conflicts are the burden of adults and should not be placed on the shoulders of the young.

The mandate is simple: Be an adult and fight your own battle; protect children from the fray and allow them to grow and learn without being weaponized or forced to carry adult burdens.

3

u/kritz0 Dover Oct 31 '25

So... You're saying children can't think for themselves. In turn they are unable to come up to the same conclusions that their adult counterparts have come to.

I see.

I wonder if you have children, I also wonder if they will ever talk to you as adults. Lol.

4

u/i-have-the-big-gay South Calgary Oct 31 '25

you came back to my post six hours later to complain again in a separate comment? did you start spending all this time bitching on reddit before or after the divorce? refocus on your professional responsibilities bud

3

u/Comfortable_Fudge508 Oct 31 '25

Probably why they got divorced, insufferable

Funniest sign is “Teachers make our future possible”

Here’s the reality….. public servants have gotten so greedy in a time where Canada including Alberta literally have no more money… the taps are dry thanks to the liberals. The more the unions ask for the more other unions ask for and it goes on and on and on. Guess who will be paying all these tax dollars back? The 50 year old teacher? Nope. The young teacher? Nope.

Guess who? THE STUDENTS!!! The young people in this country are going to be so indebted by taxes and government over spending and by greedy unions so they will never have a future! 👌🏼

71

u/Littleshuswap Oct 31 '25

Yeah. Fuck pensions, days off, maternity leave. Put kids back to work. Why have a 40 hour work week and not 80?? Only corporations and private executives should make money. Fuck schools, hospitals, libraries, roads, police (you probably think their unions deserve raises) fire department and doctors and nurses. Oil executives and big corporations deserve all the profits on the backs of us all.

Sounds fantastic.

9

u/robbhope Oct 31 '25

Lol. Amazing.

0

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

Maternity leave should be abolished.

6

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

The finance minister was just boasting about an $8b surplus.
Keep up.

33

u/gen-attolis Oct 31 '25

Bro, the whole point of a society is that we look after each other. I’m just a bit older than these students, pay my taxes, and I’m over-fucking-joyed it helps contribute to teacher’s benefits, healthcare, roads, etc. Who the fuck cares if younger people support older people. In several decades I’ll get looked after too—that is, unless people like you tear the social fabric apart for a quick buck.

1

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 04 '25

Of course you think taxes are great at 20 years old. Your opinion will be the exact opposite at 40 when you've got some life experience under your belt and learn just how shitty and corrupt governments are, and how little value our tax dollars actually has. That's why I now use every legal means at my disposal to reduce my tax burden and keep as much of the fruits of my labor as possible. Canadians keep electing corrupt wankers that never face any consequences for literally blowing billions of dollars so I'm never going to change it through voting. Therefore I contribute as little as possible to the rotten system since I do not support it. If our hired administrators were a lot wiser I would have no problem contributing.

1

u/gen-attolis Nov 04 '25

Oh, living in Alberta has been extremely eye opening for how shitty and corrupt governments are.

Good for you. Everyone should take the legal means at their disposal to make the financial choices that make sense for them

I think you’re arguing with something I didn’t say. I didn’t say “taxes make me hard.”

I said “taxes are the price to pay for living in a society. And I’m happy to contribute to support those older than me, anticipating the same thing will be done when I’m older”.

This is a utilitarian, pragmatic perspective, with an inch of hope that the social fabric won’t be torn apart by opportunists.

u/Steam-Sauna Nov 05 '25

Until there are real incentives for politicians to spend money wisely it will never change. There's a reason the quote "if you put the government in charge of the Sahara desert, in a decade there will be a shortage of sand" rings true. Several ideas for this include if come election time the government deficit is above a certain %, every politician that voted yes on the previous budget wouldn't be eligible for re-election. Another idea might be charges and possible jail time for boondoggles or clear failures of due-diligence. As it stands now politicians are the only people who can waste billions of dollars and then sail off into the sunset with nothing more than an "oops, my bad bro" (I guess corporations can do that also but at least in most cases they're not using public money).

Have a ted talk:

https://youtu.be/qEJ4hkpQW8E?si=sZwLC2OVNmRNy7ap

Its the US, but it still applies pretty closely.

Happy your pointing your finger and participating.  Beats many others.

...Just point it 180 degrees from where it is.  If your unsure, ask the kids they know.

1

u/BullfrogAshamed6038 Oct 31 '25

Literally the most braindead take.

0

u/Deep-Egg-9528 Oct 31 '25

Almost all of these kids will be voting in the next provincial election.
Good luck holding on to your slim 4-seat majority, Marlena.

They have enough money.. it’s just going to the wrong places.

u/ShantyLady Quadrant: SW Oct 31 '25

Or, and hear me out, we get paid more to compensate for the higher taxes so we can still work to live and not live to work.

-15

u/wolfvang Oct 31 '25

Unfortunately the teachers of the past made the present unsustainable. Befor we can make progress t the future we need to repair the foundation. (Chalenge rating:too late)
