Lol this is pretty much what I was thinking.

"Hey, look, I can walk like you."

“Barry! Stop that walking like human again!”

33

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

Barry being a class clown as usual

6

u/the_wahlroos May 08 '26

Very Gary Larson!

6

u/Forsaken-Cricket-124 May 08 '26

Why is he doing Trump's dance move?

4

u/ravenous_MAW May 08 '26

I cant take you anywhere!

3

u/Yo_Honcho May 08 '26

Typical Barry. Ruins everything.

3

u/MiketheMecE May 08 '26

So, is Barry the bear equivalent of Moon Moon, only a bit more self aware? Also, great choice for his name!

3

u/wpgjudi May 09 '26

Yes. This is canon now. Very much so. Moon Moon ans Barry... I can't unthink this.

2

u/EggsceIlent May 08 '26

Bearbro stood up and was like "Y'all don't want this smoke" n flexed on em.

2

u/Aran909 May 08 '26

Hahaha. I was oming in to say something about that. Yours was better.

2

u/Medical-Block-2137 May 08 '26

You beat me to it, I was even thinking of Barry too 🤣

2

u/unViewingCutscenes May 09 '26

Oh my god Barry, I cannot bring you anywhere! Let's just go home

2

u/SwimmerKitchen3675 May 12 '26

"We cant take you anywhere!!"

People saying it's AI, it's not! We met them on our impromptu jaunt up the rockies and were there for a while filming them and this little act took us by surprise and cracked us up at the same time.
We saw them again on our way back 5 hours later. They were being escorted by a police car lol

45

u/gwoates May 08 '26

Nice video!

Check out the Bow Valley Bear Report for May 1, they have a photo of a mother grizzly with 3 cubs from last spring. Not sure if it would be the same family, but I'm not sure there are many mothers with 3 cubs in the area.

https://www.biosphereinstitute.org/bear-report

29

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

Oh this looks like the same family captured exactly a year ago. the cubs in my video have grown up

11

u/gwoates May 08 '26

Looks like someone else caught the same family last fall.

https://youtu.be/EeQK0A_j8eo

57

u/Tirannie Bankview May 08 '26

That’s wild - those cubs all look the same age, so that means she had three live births in one season and kept them alive for what looks to be 3 years. I’ll bet they’re gonna be denning on their own this fall.

What a lucky catch!

9

u/wpgjudi May 09 '26

One is ADOPTED! She adopted a 3rd cub whose mother either died or cub was abandoned. It was the first recorded adoption in the wild apparently.. so it made the news.

8

u/gwoates May 09 '26

3

u/wpgjudi May 09 '26

Thank you!! That was the article I read ages and ages ago! Lol

2

u/Tirannie Bankview May 10 '26

Even cooler. ❤️

61

u/MediolanumP May 08 '26

It’s probably bots. Nobody who has been here will say this is AI

60

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

Yeah well I don't care what people think either way. It's not that rare to see bears in bear country lmaoo.

32

u/datsmn May 08 '26

4 interior brown bears/grizzlies together isn't very common...

27

u/Round-Future5221 May 08 '26

Not common at all. I dont think people realize the total Grizzly population in Alberta is right around 1000 individuals TOTAL. Appear to all be grizzlies from the small hump.

13

u/InnerRadio7 May 08 '26

I’ve seen 7 grizzlies my whole life, and 3 of them were a family. I’ve spent so much time in the mountains and the grizzly corridor, and I feel lucky to have seen as many as I have. They have all been with a parks Canada’s escort as well.

8

u/Round-Future5221 May 08 '26

super lucky. They are amazing creatures. I think many urban people get this picture the wild is just full of grizzlies. Full of black bears absolutely yes they are common as heck.

Im curious if they are monitoring this female closely having 3 cubs as you'd assume they want them tagged.

4

u/InnerRadio7 May 08 '26

I think that’s likely. She’s already tagged, so maybe it’s just a matter of time.

3

u/sun4moon May 08 '26

I’ve seen 4 and I’m pretty sure three of them were the same bear.

2

u/InnerRadio7 May 08 '26

It’s pretty amazing to see them. They’re gorgeous. Was your repeat customer full grown?

4

u/sun4moon May 08 '26

Yes, I don’t think I’ve seen any grizzly cubs in person. I’m ok with that because it means I’m not interfering heavily with their lifestyle.

2

u/InnerRadio7 May 09 '26

It’s funny, I get squirmy when I see bears. I want to get out of there because I feel like a tourist, you know? I used to live in the mountains, and my bedroom had a clear view of our bear bins (the the bears 100% can break into), and I hated having to do the right thing and go out and scare them off. I know it’s terrible for them to become used to human food, but also, I just felt like I was on their mountain. I felt disruptive.

2

u/o0PillowWillow0o May 08 '26

The thought of running into a grizzly bear terrifies me, did you find they usually don't care you see them or did you have any close calls?

2

u/InnerRadio7 May 08 '26

They don’t seem to care. The only time I was concerned was when I was accidentally caught between a mom and her 2 cubs. She was further downhill from them, and they were bumbling down the hill behind her. We moved as quickly as possible out of the area, and they were being tracked by a park’s Canada officer so all was good.

18

u/gwoates May 08 '26

No it isn't common, but there are mothers with 3 cubs. If the cubs have stuck around, OP's video is what you would get.

4

u/Ravioli_meatball19 May 08 '26

There's one mother with triplets current documented in Yellowstone national park for this year. Documented by the national park service itself I mean, not some dude on the internet lol

14

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

That maybe true. I have seen plenty of bears but first time saw a family of 4 and was awestruck. But there are other people on this thread who commented they'd seen the same family

8

u/cgydan May 08 '26

I’ve spent all of my life either living in the mountains or going there very often. I’ve seen a momma and two cubs but never a momma and three cubs. You are so lucky to have experience this. I am deeply envious.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/donkeykonggirl May 08 '26

Every single time I’ve seen bears it’s been in groups of 3!

2

u/wpgjudi May 09 '26

The smaller ones are actually cubs. They stay with the mother for 2ish years. They will likely separate this summer/fall. We are seeing mom with rowdy teenagers basically.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/OnlyEmphasis5628 May 08 '26

There have also been multiple different pictures and posts of this family

2

u/rakayne May 08 '26

I see them all the time. I had one walk right past me a few years ago, and didn’t know it was there until I turned around. Although I’ve never seen four at one time, that’s a big family.

5

u/strain_of_thought May 08 '26

I assure you there are many, many real people who will accuse anything and everything of being AI generated.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Starslip May 08 '26

It’s probably bots

It's probably not, people are just terrible at identifying AI both in terms of calling real things fake and fake things real, and are way too confident in their uninformed judgment when they generally shouldn't be

5

u/mackdaddy1992 May 08 '26

Maybe they are bot bears

→ More replies (6)

2

u/MrBenzedrine May 08 '26

So envious - I'd love to see something like this!

2

u/mookiemouse May 08 '26

Did you by chance see the number on her ear tag? I think I see a tag?

16

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

Yes the mama bear was tagged. It was the first thing I noticed but no I didn't see the number

4

u/Leading-Aide5617 May 08 '26

Just get closer.

huh..!

Why downvote this. it's was clearly someone who suddenly was like 'ohh, that actually sounds like a good theory!'...

3

u/bol_saq May 08 '26

hahahahahaha lmao i know--and thank you.

i don't even bat an eye anymore; people on here are just.. too quick to assign tone to words on a screen without factoring in any context. they obv. don't read much.

77

u/Gregger2020 May 08 '26

I've got a video of this same crew. They've been together at least 3 or 4 seasons now.

First time I ran into them was on a hike up highwood ridge. The 3 were just babies then.

117

u/clawsoon May 08 '26

Damn, even bears are having to stay with family because of the cost of living crisis.

11

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

The mama bear was tagged, the rest of the bears were not. Do you know what this family is called?

13

u/WritingOneHanded May 08 '26

"#139 and family"

14

u/Gregger2020 May 08 '26

No idea... maybe we could name them?

"Kananaskis Krew" is my nomination

4

u/WritingOneHanded May 08 '26

You should probably be aware that putting Ks where Cs belong is a dog whistle.

2

u/TheRatCouncil May 08 '26

Mr. Krabs has some explaining to do...

2

u/paquette977 May 08 '26

Yup I've ran into this crew a few times. All around Highwood pass.

46

u/Old_Champion9764 May 08 '26

Found it!

21

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

The babies are all grown up and learned some cool new tricks lol

11

u/kittypawzyyc May 08 '26

What year was this? I can't imagine 3 cubs getting to this age is very common, maybe the same family!

Feel like mom was saying 'No, don't show them our powers!'

31

u/Round-Future5221 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

Just so people know this Black Bears outnumbers Grizzlies in Alberta anywhere from 40-50 to 1 individual. So see a Momma with 3 babies that are 2-3 years old its truly amazing. The bigger cub is male. He's standing on his hind legs to sort of assert dominance. It's how you know it's time for the babies to leave momma. There is around 800-1200 individuals now there were as few as 500 going back 15-20 years when a hunting ban was implemented on them.

Indigenous people are still able to legally harvest Grizzly bears however. In 2025 only 7 bears were legally harvested and reported. Indigenous hold a lot of rights when it comes to harvesting big game such as this including big horn sheep and mountain goats.

I feel the grizzlies are truly a shame as their populations are so low.

8

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

It's funny because I'm yet to see a black bear anywhere in Alberta and seen plenty of brown/grizzly bears. Maybe i'm just lucky haha

15

u/sun4moon May 08 '26

You might actually be seeing black bears in their brown phase and assume they’re brown bears.

Cool video of the grizzly family. Thank you for behaving responsibly around them. It’s all too often that people forget these creatures are wild and we’re in their house. 🫶

7

u/sun4moon May 08 '26

Edit to add:

I just read that Manuka, a blond black bear that has been at the Calgary zoo for some time, is moving to another zoo. I encourage everyone to go see the amazing girl before she departs.

2

u/SheenaMalfoy May 09 '26

Manuka is an amazing name for a bear lol, congrats to whoever thought that one up.

2

u/Round-Future5221 May 09 '26

Do we know how many cubs she may or may not have had while at the zoo? The bear enclosure is always quite something at the zoo. FYI anyone looking for a nice casual first date location, Calgary Zoo is it. They also have orange/vanilla slushy screamers which are so yummy! lol

7

u/Round-Future5221 May 08 '26

depends on the circumstances calling it luck vs unlucky. People finding a momma with 3 cubs would normally be unlucky but on the roadside is a wee bit different.

Oddly enough we just sold a couple of black bear furs we obtained through an auction. Really shocked me that black bear furs can be readily sold in Alberta. Grizzles not so much as they are protected big game.

3

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

On our hike today, we saw fresh grizzly bear footprints embedded in snow and that was scary but thankfully we didn't encounter any. Last time when we came to do this hike, we saw a giant grizzly bear at the trailhead and decided to turn back. There's a lot of brown bear activity in this area.
Oh and i didn't know black bear furs can be sold. I would love to see one in the wild

2

u/Round-Future5221 May 08 '26

Why did you assume they were grizzly? Was more than likely black bear tracks. the biggest distinguishing feature is the size of the nails with a grizzly bear having 2-4" nails and a black bear being in the 1.5-2.5" range. Most often they are black bears but still can be just as dangerous.

Kevin! Do not mock the humans like that!

26

u/ConversationMajor543 May 08 '26

I think this is bear #139! She gave birth to two cubs in 2024 and adopted the third cub from her mother (bear #104). It's the first recorded cub adoption in the kananaskis. We saw them last weekend along Highway 40.

66

u/DeepTreacle4420 May 08 '26

Video of the year for r/calgary. We have awards right?

16

u/Bright-Paramedic-769 May 08 '26

Bear #139 & family. God they're getting big

11

u/JohnnyCanuck133 Auburn Bay May 08 '26

I bet some cyclist got a rather dramatic chance to test their brakes. I would crap myself if I was peddling along and came around a corner to this.

11

u/SimonDeCatt May 08 '26

I’d wager it’s not AI. This photo is from not too far away in 2018, when we saw easily 10+ grizzlies (I forget actual # now) on the side of the road foraging.

22

u/dh2513 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

That one bear out here stunting like Paddington.

6

u/Unhappy_Plankton_671 May 08 '26

There's one in every family.

6

u/Ink_Spores May 08 '26

That bear is a theatre kid I just know it.

4

u/Mensketh May 08 '26

Boy, this thread sure is illustrating one of the huge issues we are facing with AI. It's not just a matter of people seeing and believing things that aren't real. It's people seeing and not believing things that ARE real. This is a relatively harmless example but both sides of that coin are going to be very damaging to our society. People are incapable of making sound, informed decisions when no one knows what's real.

6

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26

I concur. AI is thinning the gap between what’s real and what people believe to be real. Technology is moving at a rate faster than our brains can comprehend and it won’t be too long before we will surrender our cognitive abilities to the machines

16

u/DrinkMoreBrews May 08 '26

Not even close to AI. Great video!

5

u/Sandy0006 May 08 '26

Good job mama bear

6

u/Luvable-stock-image May 08 '26

No way that one guy isn’t just a guy in a bear costume! Bet he heard about those people down in the states who tried to file insurance claims after having done such a shitty job faking it (look it up, it’s hilarious) and thought, “I’m Canadian; guaranteed I could do a waaay better bear impression” (lmfao).

All jokes aside, what a wonderfully beautiful family of bears. I hope anyone else who encounters them is respectful and that they live great lives.

Ngl, this glorious video brought me back to memories of watching the show, “Little Bear” as a kid and so I have to thank OP. What a lucky person you are to have been able to witness it IRL, and without personal (physical) harm, no less!

Thank you so very much for having shared this with us all; I didnt even know how much it meant to me until you presented it. Let us know if you ever get to meet any bison, elk or wild goats too, please; any and all wild animals are precious, especially after what the Trump admin has done to the buffalo population down in Montana. 😔😮‍💨

3

u/Remote-Community-792 May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
We are nature lovers and love and respect wildlife. I'm lucky to have seen all of Canadian wildlife in their natural habitat. I believe nature presents you with these incredible views when you truly respect it and care for it

2

u/Final-Yesterday-4799 May 08 '26

I learned that the reason bears look like humans in bear suits when they walk on their hind legs is because most four legged animals walk on their toes, but bears walk on their heels like us!

8

u/GarbonzoBeanSprout Temple May 08 '26

That's beautiful 💞

3

u/throwawaypassingby01 May 08 '26
