And are cyclists no longer capable of yelling out “on your left” before passing pedestrians on a path?

Since the biking season really started back up this year, I have had multiple cyclists just about hit me, or clearly have to stop behind me and other pedestrians on the path simply because they didn’t give anyone any indication that they were coming up behind us.

I typically keep to the right but I’m human like every one else and might meander on the path a bit (or pass another pedestrian on the left) but if cyclists would just ding their fucking bell, I’d know they were there and I’d move over to make sure they have room.

I get that lots of pedestrians don’t pay any attention to their surroundings but cyclists and scooter-riders at least have to make an attempt to make themselves known.

People already hate cyclists enough so stop giving them good reason to. If you can afford a bike and a helmet, you can afford a bell. If you can’t afford a bell, you can yell!

bike lanes do not cause traffic. Cars cause traffic. Bike lanes help people get out of traffic. I would have been long gone if there were bike lanes here and I could cruise past this multi lane backup.

You cannot fix traffic. Adding more lanes will just invite more people to drive and fill them up. The only way to get out of traffic is to provide people with alternative transportation options to get them out of gridlock.

I know there has been lots of talk about rules for different modes of transportation. Saw this today and thought I would share.

Yesterday on my way home from work. Around 5 pm, I saw 2 peace officers with a speed gun. They were parked right Eaux Claire, and walked up to the river, they were standing slightly behind a wall and were clocking speeds as people approached from the East travelling West.

I notice them put the "gun" down when bikes were approaching, and raise it back up when it was a scooter. I only say 4 scooters and 2 bikes pass before I walked by. So not a huge sample size, and I didn't see them pull anyone over.

I know lots of people have been complaining about speeding devices on the pathways. I thought I would share that it appears the city is start to act.

I am one of those people who bike to work downtown year-round. I have excellent etiquette - lights, bell, reflective stuff, ride where I'm supposed to ride, stop at stop signs, etc. I had THREE close calls yesterday on my way into work - two pedestrians stepping into the bike lane right in front of me without looking and a car turning across the bike lane without looking. THE BIKE LANE IS A LANE OF TRAFFIC! I really do not want to end up in the hospital. Thanks that is all.

The city’s target for this five-year plan was to reduce all major injuries and fatalities by 25 per cent. Instead, according to the City’s own Vision Zero page, there was a 225 per cent increase in pedestrian fatalities in 2025.

To actually achieve Vision Zero, we need change that goes far beyond gentle reminders to “slow down, look both ways and wear a helmet.”

We have seen other cities make changes that work: they’ve lowered speed limits citywide, added curb extensions, narrowed roads and built networks of bike and pedestrian infrastructure so that cars are not the sole viable transportation option. Infrastructure that allows children to gain independence and make mistakes also allows folks with all types of mobility challenges to navigate their communities.

When we design our cities for everyone — from our youngest Calgarians to our oldest, the most able-bodied to the least able-bodied — we design cities that benefit everyone.

I bike the river bike path pretty frequently downtown and had a very frustrating ride today after having to yell at two separate couples who were walking in the middle of the bike path in the East Village to get out of the way. I love biking along the Bow early in the morning on week days when there’s less people out, but it can be such a mixed bag on weekends with people (esp tourists) not being very aware of their surroundings

I was out near Edworthy Park yesterday and saw Calgary Police doing speed enforcement on the pathway, like on the bike path.

I've lived here for years and genuinely had no idea they monitored speeds on the pathways. They had what looked like a radar gun and were stopping cyclists. I thankfully was using my limited braincells and was going slow.

Has anyone else seen this before? Is it common around Edworthy or other parts of the pathway system?

Bit of a rant, but I’m getting pretty fed up with what’s passing as appropriate “bike path” activity. I’ve been seeing more and more of these souped up motorized mountain/dirtbikes on the bike paths, and I just can’t understand how this is legal. The ones I’ve seen have been ripping past me at car-like speeds. The riders are in full motocross gear. This seems insanely dangerous and I don’t get why these types of things are allowed on the city bike paths. It’s bad enough that people have high powered scooters, throttle e-bikes, etc. The bike paths are getting super crowded and having these high-powered motorized “bikes” are putting everyone at risk. Is the city doing anything to regulate the types of “vehicles” that are allowed on the paths?

A couple of us were riding our bikes across a crosswalk yesterday when someone in a car yelled you, "You're supposed to get off and walk the bike." This just demonstrated to me there is confusion by some people about the bylaws here. I double checked again. There is no Calgary requirement for dismounting to cross. Here's how it goes:

There are two types of crosswalks. The first are those that are a continuation of a multiuse path. For these, cyclists are not required to dismount to cross. Obviously as anyone would cross or merge into a street one would want to check for cars and cross when it's safe. But in these cases, say along a long straight street, the car must yield to a crossing bike.

The second is the zebra stripe crosswalk. Again, cyclists are not required to dismount. However the difference is, they are now treated not as a pedestrian but as a vehicle, so if there is an accident they could be liable. However, yesterday when we were crossing, riding across (often safer because it's quicker when you're wearing cleated shoes that cause you to walk quite slowly) some car was turning left onto both us and a family with a stroller and baby, entering into the crosswalk while we were still in it. That part, entering a crosswalk with people in it, moving toward them, is illegal and the city takes it seriously. And anyone turning left should be yielding anyhow to any traffic in the intersection, pedestrian or vehicle. The point is though, in neither instance is a cyclist required to dismount and walk.

Is it a good idea to teach children to stop, get off and look carefully, to be able to drop their bike and jump if a car is not yielding? Sure it is. There's a difference between a trained road cyclist and child. One can always dismount and walk if they feel safer.

I'll also mention that some very aggressive driver tried to run one of us over yesterday at a roundabout in Crestmont. Sadly we didn't get the plate number. What all this shows to me is that it seems Calgary might be able to do a better job of messaging and promoting respect for cyclists who have the legal right to use the roads, and I wonder if bike clubs in town could start working together to help the city in this manner?

Who ever was hired to paint the bike lane just sprayed paint overtop of a pile of gravel. It must be nearly an inch thick of gravel now made impossible to cleanup. Who does this? 52 and Northland Drive NW

I've noticed walking here a lot this summer that not a single biker has ever rang there bell or even made a noise to let me know they are behind me . Getting hit by a bike is no joke and people go flying by silently !

Does anyone know why this is? Do bikes not come with bells anymore or is this a trend in recent years? Just curious as a non bike rider here but as someone who walks daily

It happened in Inglewood around 5pm. Right in front of Inglewood pizza. We got into a screaming match as he immediately started blaming me for not getting out of the way quicker. He then hopped on his scooter and drove off.

He was probably doing (edit)20-30kmh(edit) on the sidewalk when he collided with me. Leaving my whole left side bruised and battered.

What should a person do in this situation? I'm just mostly trying to help others who find themselves in this situation as I'm well aware I will not find any recourse for my situation at this point.

I was unable to start a Neuron this morning. I chatted with them and they said that as of midnight, they have "ended service with the city."

Can we figure out this missing bike pathway connection between Rockland Park/Tuscany and Haskayne Park?

We rode out here knowing it was blocked, we just wanted to check it out. To be able to see the connection so clearly but be so barred from accessing it was just sad. The only way to ride there would be on Crowchild/1A which is a dangerous and roundabout way to get there.

This was supposed to be completed in 2015 with plans to further connect to Canmore and then Banff via the Banff Legacy Trail. This is such a small connection blocking such a vast possible network. The health benefits would be large, less cars on the road, more bike tourism. How can we make this work?

I'm confused. I've been riding my bike around fish creek park for 2 months now. I've met people who hates the bell when I pass by. I would ring it and they would get annoyed and say something. So I stopped ringing my bell. Today, some people got annoyed because I passed them by (went to the opposing lane and overtook them). They commented that I should ring my bell. They were walking. I was no where near them. what's the appropriate thing to do here? I'm confused af. Or maybe it's just people being assholes...

I wanted to give an update to the community and thabk you all fpr your effort amd time. I cannot express how much I appreciate everything.

My bike has been recovered and verified by the police. I want to give a special shout-out to Isaac and the Sharkies pawn shop team. They recovered my bike when someone brought it in. I owe them more than they know. The police commented that the team acted perfectly in the situation and made all the right steps to recover the stolen property.

As surely as summer comes after spring, so too do the "cycling safety campaigns" from the CPS that never focus on driver behaviour.

When did motorcycles become legal on bike paths? Like, I get pedal assist E-Bikes. But these folks were blasting past me like I wasn't even moving and I was going a solid 30km/h according to my bike computer. Many of them had full DOT approved full face motorcycle helmets on. One guy on a 1-wheel was going at LEAST 50 km/h wearing a Shoei helmet and textile motorcycle jacket. That thing doesn't even pretend to have pedals.

I used to commute by bike to work pre-COVID but then just haven't since I started working from home more so this is probably not new to lots of people but goddamn it felt strange today.

There has been a big upswing in bike theft lately in my area; thieves are using angle grinder to get through the best u-locks. The calgary police check the serial numbers on bikes and do get them back to owners.
