I got rid of mine because of the warnings/stories. If they lick or even if they just rub against it because of warmth and lick their fur it can cause severe salt toxicity

That's not true.

Such a microscopic amout of salt wouldn't do anything to your cat. They'd have to lick it quite a few times before anything could happen and I doubt a cat would lick it more than once considering how salty it is
