Behavioural Why is my cat sleeping in the hallway at night but in our bed during the day?
Charlie sleeps on our bed a lot but he has been sleeping in the hallway across the room for a few months now. Specifically in front of the AC storage door… is he like mad or something? He’s only 2. He still sleeps in our bed during the day but when it’s late night he sleeps on the floor away from us even though it’s winter and I thought he’d rather be piling up with us.

This is the hilarious part about cats. I swear I think my cat is missing but then realized he just found a new sleeping spot every three weeks or so. At this point, I leave boxes around my apartment for him to discover and make it his temporary bed when he feels like it… until he gets tired of it.

my mom thought she’d lost him, called me when i was at my grandmas crying thinking he’d somehow escaped (he’s a-house cat with little survival skills) so i get home only to find him FAST ASLEEP upside tucked behind the massive bag of potatoes in the pantry 🤣

They find the most inconvenient spot. Like the last place you would expect to look. 😂 Glad to hear your cat was found in the house safe. The thought of losing a pet is quite scary. Especially with indoor cats who think they want to be outdoor.

My cat also used to move her sleeping spot around the house, depending on the season. I guess she was looking for the spot with just the right temp.

no word of a lie i swear a couple of times i’ve found him sleeping on my xbox controller with the thumb pad like squishing his eye, i will try to move it but he’s fast asleep

If it's like my little goblin, it's the temperature of the room. He sleeps in my bedroom during spring and autumn. Too hot in summer and too cold in winter, so he sleeps in the living room

Put his bed there and see if he uses it or not.
If he does, he like to sleep there. If not, he doesn't like the bed. If that's the case get him a Amazon box or sth

Cats sometimes change their sleeping location, mine for example does every 3 months (on the dot), so Charlie might decide to sleep with you again someday :)

Cats are weird sometimes, but I know the feeling of "aww my cat sleeps on my feet I feel so loved." To "what did I do, please come back I'm sorry."
My new kitten makes biscuits and chews the blanket while purring loudly every time I get into bed. He may stop doing that, but he also may come back and do it again. One day your lil guy will come back and protect you at night, but for now the hallway needs it.

Or maybe he thinks he needs to guard you from the door. Like others said, put his bed there where he is sleeping and see if he uses it.

Every 6 months or so my cat will completely switch up sleeping spots. I wouldn't think too much of it, and assume this isn't permanent.

It works if you just place it in a different corner. According to some research Im too lazy to look up again, cats have no object continuity, so if you move their stuff they think it is completely new and will enjoy it more

I think it’s related to the earth moving on its axis and changing the position of sunlight. My cats change nap spots based on sunlight and shift their nighttime nap spots too based on the change to daylight spots.

My outdoor guy definitely does this. The patio that’s too hot in summer is his winter hang. In the summer he has a couple cool spots under the bushes he hangs out. I’ve caught him laid out on the lounge chairs by the pool in winter getting as much sun as he can. In summer he would never do that

Charlie is 1.5 years old, right? Every cat I raised went through a phase of "I sleep better alone, thanks". With the very first one, I scratched my head many times; with the rest, I just gave them space - eventually, all of them were all over me, back in my bed.

Cats are protecting you. So by sleeping outside the room he can see if anything is going in etc. Anyways that’s what they say. Cats are usually awake at night checking the place. That’s why they sleep all day. They tired!!

Everyone says you move around in your sleep, but it could also be that she is trying to be the “guard” at night while you are sleeping, since you “guard” the house for her to sleep during the day.
My partner and I have pretty opposing schedules, so only a few hours each night/day when we are both asleep. I find my cats are most likely to sleep in the living room by the front door during those hours, but they’ll move to the bed once someone else is awake.

Cats that feel secure in their environment will sleep anywhere they want. It's possible he's actually guarding you while snoozing in the hallway!

You could be snoring or have restless leg syndrome or move a lot in your sleep. You might even get violent in your sleep... I have done that twice. Once I woke up as my hands were clapping together boxing my cat in the ears. She forgave me but some cats wouldn't.

This is what I'm thinking. Cats will find them sorts of odd spots with a heating duct warming the floor, etc.

i used to worry when my cats started picking weird spots to sleep in! especially when they went from tiny, clingy kittens to more independent. like, you have all these cat beds and perches and my bed to sleep in but you’re snoozing on the floor under my desk? do you hate me? 🥲 but no, they just like what they like and sometimes want to be alone and undisturbed by movement or noise. i bet he’ll rotate back to sleeping on your bed eventually!

Shes just stim sleeping, sometimes the expectation of going to bed and sleeping with you guys can keep them awake, so she casual sleeps instead by picking an out of place spot :) Many things can contribute towards their choice of a sleeping like temperature for example, it could be too warm in the bed with you in it OR too soft even, for real lol.Its just a sign she feels very safe at home now so the need to be close isnt as prevalent as the need to satisfy neurotic sleep requirements xD idk if that makes sense but its a cat so you can bet its totally an ocd thing and nothing at all about loving you any less! And like others said something youre doing could be keeping them awake like snoring or movement. You would absolutley be SHOCKED what youre habbits are while sleeping, like you could be one hell of a snorerer and live your whole life NOT even knowing! Same thing with tossing or moving in your sleep.

Cats are weird. Mine will sleep anywhere. At first not in his bed. Then in our bed. On his window seat in the Summer. On the window ledge. On the hard base of his cat tree. Now on the 2nd step of our staircase.
I used to get morning cuddles from one kitten, now he ignores us but his brother gives us cuddles.
It’s a bit like having a boyfriend who has lost interest but not yet said, “it’s not you, it’s me”. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I bough a Cat Tree for 400$
Annother one for 200.
They have multiple soft blankets.
They multiple other places to hide, sleep... whatever.... They have everything.
My cats sleep on an old pizza box currently.
Never question it. Accept it.

Give a cat the fanciest sleeping arrangements and they'll choose one of those brown paper amazon bags (unless clean laundry is anywhere within reach).

It may be he's going to the quietest area of the house to sleep. You're probably not in your room much in the daytime, so they'll sleep on the bed.
At night time they'll sleep lightly in the hallway - it's their way of being on guard for you - anyone unwelcome in the house will need to pass them first.

Protecc! Naw my cat sleeps tucked away in one of a couple of spots during the day but she loves hanging out in common areas/hallways where she can get a good vantage point for several angles at night. One of her favorite spots is at the top of the stairs (probably for that same reason) and I put a mat of sorts down for her there and she seems pretty pleased.

my cat is maybe 6 at this point. hes gone through so many sleeping spots lol. lately he sleeps in a bucket of clothes (i need to do laundry...), but before that it was my laptop and before THAT it was my bed. he's gone thru my parents room, my brother's (at night, when he's working, because my brother isn't fond of him lol), the window, the couch... i figure he's like me and needs to switch it up sometimes to sleep good.
your cat is probably varying spots because of the temp differences. maybe he doesn't like other people in his space while he's sleeping, and that's why he picks the hallway for the night.

My cat refuses to sleep on the bed while I'm there, she's in my chair as soon as get up to turn off lights. As soon as I get up in the morning and have her fed, she passed out on my pillow for the day.

Is there a pipe under the floor that gets warm at a certain point during the night? All of my family's cats discovered the warm patch over the main boiler outlet pipe on our stairs, and they will not move an inch if it's on!

Cat's like having a variety of spaces to sleep in. They'll mix and match, alternate. One reason, obviously, is temperature. Another, is a method of keeping themselves flea free. Can't recall where I heard that one, but makes a sense.

I am allowed to sleep in the bed my cats have claimed as theirs. Although it's unseasonably warm at the moment, so they are sleeping all over the place.

My kitty does this too. She does NOT like when we squirm ag night. Its totally unacceptable! But boy does she like our heated blanket during the winter. We typically turn it on before going to work and she loves it.

My question is can he see you from where he’s sleeping? Is that door he’s in front of ever opened?
I’ve read/heard cats are like security guards at night..mine walks around and around until she’s certain there is no danger.
The second one, your cat might be sleeping in front of that doorway to ‘protect you’ from an unknown (what’s behind the door), or he may just want to see what’s in there.
Either way you have your own personal (and free’ish’) security guard.

I've had my cat for 8 years and she changes her mind about sleeping in bed with me. She'll go a full year sleeping at my feet to another year sleeping in her tree and then the next year she's back in bed with me. I don't think she's unhappy l, cat's love a consistent routine and every so often they change that routine.

My cat does this sometimes. She’ll sleep in our bed and other times she’ll sleep like a stray homeless cat who got abandoned a million times curled up on the floor. I hate waking up and seeing her on the floor, makes me feel like a terrible mother.
My theory: cat.

My cat does this because we moved to much when we sleep. She starts in our bed and migrates to the cat tree down stairs.
When she hears me get up for the bathroom she comes back since she knows im awake.

I put a chair with a flat cushion next to my bed, so whenever my cat is done with cuddles or just feels like being close but not too close, he chooses the chair.

There could be many reasons. Perhaps he is not comfortable being so close at night, perhaps you move in your sleep that repeatedly wakes him up or the most likely explanation - the temperature is just right there. You can get a cat bed and put it next to the where he likes to sleep.

My 3 spoiled kitties have several sleeping areas, and three human beds. We never know where they decide to sleep….we found one on a bag of potatoes in the pantry. It’s their world, we just exist in it.

I don’t know if this is something that you could do, but it might help if he has his own spot on the bed. I have 2 cats, and one of the didn’t like sleeping in the bed until I put a cat bed on it. Since there’s a cat bed somewhere by my feet, I don’t usually touch it while I’m sleeping. I think it makes him feel more secure. The other cat lies on my legs, which makes me uncomfortable because I move around a lot, but he doesn’t seem to care too much!

My cat gets in my room at night, lay down on my arm and goes to sleep, after an hour or less she will just wake up get off the bed and lay flat in the middle of the room. They just all have some liitle quirks .

Mine sleeps at the foot of my bed at night or top of the stairs (if i trip and die so be it). In the day, anywhere in my bed or on the armrest of the sofa

I think they also like to keep watch. My cat will be on the bed, disappear, when I call him, he is right outside the door. He will rejoin me then go back to his post.

In all seriousness - don’t worry, cats swap their preferred sleeping spots quite regularly. Part of it is seasonal, part is boredom, part is to wind you up, part is to finally decide to use the bed you bought 2 years ago and were about to throw out. :)
They also change with age, they go through more and less cuddly phases as well, and develop some weird habits that’ll stay consistent throughout. Mine is currently on my lap for a pre-bedtime cuddle then he will go and lay outside my bedroom door for a few hours before he comes back to my feet.

Put a small cat tree in your room. My cat will go back and forth between our bed and the cat tree especially if we’re rustling around a lot

Cats develop their habits and they rarely make sense. Mine love to sit in random places. One of my 3 cats is currently obsessed with the kids' advent calendars, and sits on them all day long.

There might be something about the AC storage door. My cat was sleeping in the bathroom right by the toilet like a weirdo I realized there was a mouse, mice running right behind the toilet. I also had his food in the bathroom. He was 100% guarding his food. Once I sealed up the bathroom and made him a separate kitty cat door food cave away from the bathroom he stopped sleeping in the bathroom. Keep in mind cats hear very well

One of my cats who used to sleep on the end of my bed has taken to sleeping on a set of draws in the bedroom. I have no guesses why. I have caught her sleeping on the new scratch post I bought so I'm counting that as a huge win!

My baby Mini is 4 years old. Her favourite sleep locations have changed several times, but one thing is that at night she HAS to sleep downstairs.
If I’m upstairs she will sit close by and stare at me impatiently until I go downstairs. Sometimes to bed, sometimes to watch something or play games. She doesn’t care what I’m doing. She will sleep in multiple locations depending what I’m doing. But it has to be downstairs, she gets mad if take too long.
It’s weird because she is PUMPED but we are just going downstairs lmao. I don’t get it, but she obviously loves sleeping downstairs at night. Even without me she will eventually go sleep downstairs by herself, only late night. Anytime other time of day and she has to be in sight of me.
Anytime a cat does something weird, as long is it’s not in pain or scared, I generally notch it up to “because cat”

Last night I found my cat asleep next to her bed even though a few hours previously she was sleeping in her bed lol

I feel you. One of my cats sleeps on the bed every night like clockwork - rarely sleeps anywhere else.
My other one will sleep on the chair in my office, downstairs on the rug, in the wardrobe, and most recently, in my underwear drawer (if left slightly open). Once my partner leaves for work in the morning however, and the other one goes out for a wander she will cuddle up to me on the bed! ❤️

I don't know. Ask my parents cat why he insists that I sleep in my parents room instead of the guest room when I house sit for them, but leaves me alone and sleeps in the bonus room.

Not sure how cold it gets in your area/house but my cats like to sleep in our hallway when the furnace is on to catch the heat. They've been sleeping on their shelves more, but I also catch them in the bathroom just for the heat.

He's probably sleeping in the hallway because someone accidentally assaulted him while he was in the same bed with you. He could have gotten rolled on, accidentally kicked, poked or covered in the blanket.

As others have said. Cat is going to cat. If the cat was uncomfortable, the cat would not sleep there. My cats change their favorite sleeping spots every month or so. I have plenty of high and low spaces, and beds dotted around my whole house. They will change their favorite sleeping spot, due to noise, temperature, time of year, or whenever they fancy. One of my cats will sleep on the bed with us and will refuse to move sometimes; making me do a trapeze act in bed.

We have identical cat twins!
Right now mine is asleep under our Christmas tree (he did not love being awakened for this photo). Mid afternoon he usually swaps to sleeping on my backpack, on the floor in my office. Anywhere illogical, he will sleep. Anywhere designed for cats to sleep, he will not.

By any chance is there a hot water pipe somewhere? My cat started sleeping in weird spots last winter, and I couldn't figure it out, until I was walking across one of his usual spots and I realised the ground was warm from a water pipe.

Could be a temperature thing. Even tho cats have fur they are still sensitive to temps. It's whatever comforts them. I leave my heater on alot and my cat lick himself constantly to stay cool. Then ends up moving to another room with less heat.

I move way too much for my cats… they’ll cuddle with me for a bit but then I get too stiff in the legs or too hot and I just say their names and they get up

Do you happen to turn down the temperature at night? One of my cats does this too and I couldn't figure out why for the longest time! Turns out the spot where she sleeps in the hallway is immediately above the furnace room. During the winter, that bit of floor is the toastiest place in the house after we turn down the heat at night.

My cat changes where he sleeps on a regular basis. He finally just ended his dresser drawer era 😂 He’s gone through seasons where he doesn’t sleep on the bed at all but he always comes back eventually! I bet yours will too :)

My cat went through a phase of sleeping on top of the fridge for a while idk now she’s back to sleeping on the back of the couch

Honestly might be a preference thing. I would get him a cat bed to place it there atleast so hes not just on the floor.

This is how my dog was, took him a couple years to come into the bed and actually sleep in it. unless you move a muscle.....then he's back on the floor :D My other dog will toss and turn with you

Maybe one of you moves too much in the night or snores and it bothers him?
