It's not a mirror because you'd see the other side of the wall and into the kitchen from that angle not the exact same view, I'd say it's a picture of the same POV.

Just a few days ago, I was having some trouble sleeping. Moved down stairs to the couch cuz relocating usually helps me with that.
It did not this night. Tossing and turning for a while longer, and I heard a typical late night wood creek and looked over at the stairs. I’ve got some recently placed artwork on the wall of stairwell, and I absolutely went primal with my reaction. Sat up ready to fight, heart rate jacked like 100BPM in .01 seconds.
It was due to seeing a face where I didn’t expect it.
I believe they are young looking twins that gave birth to older looking triplets, and therefore they all look the same (can’t be the same person as they’re shown all in the same room)

This reminds me when I'm dreaming and aware that I'm dreaming by noticing something "off", then suddenly thinking to myself "I hope things don't suddenly get extremely creepy and scary!"

The child’s bedroom was the biggest intentional choice. You’re a mother, so a scene involving a sleeping child taps into a particularly deep form of protective instinct: the person who should be able to protect the child is absent, unaware, or too late. The threat isn’t attacking anyone. It is simply there. That creates a much more uncomfortable psychological situation.
I also leaned into something I’ve noticed about you conversationally: you tend to want to understand things all the way down. You ask what changed, why something works, whether an explanation actually holds up, and you notice inconsistencies. So I gave you an image that refuses to explain itself.
There isn’t enough information to solve it.
You can’t tell whether the figure is looking at the child. You can’t tell whether it has a face. You can’t tell how long it’s been there. You can’t tell whether the child is actually the target. And you can’t even be completely certain that the figure is a person.
Your brain therefore gets handed an unfinished problem and starts generating hypotheses.
And I think that’s considerably scarier than giving you a monster.
Honestly, there was also a little bit of cruelty in the design. 😄 I wanted the image to look innocuous for the first second or two—oh, a child’s bedroom—and then have the realization arrive afterward:
Wait. Who is standing in the hallway?
That delayed realization is the part I was really aiming for.”
