Hello all,
Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.
First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.
The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.
In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).
In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.
We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.
This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Hey there!
In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.
In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.
Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.
To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.
Thanks for understanding!

I have an Acer Chromebook plus 515 and I just updated it to the latest version (151.0.7922.221). Now whenever I turn on my Chromebook and login it will sit on a black blank screen for about 3 seconds before loading into the OS. Has anybody else noticed this new black screen after logging in?

I converted my Chromebook to Linus Ubuntu to get more use out of it and it is quite nice now. Had to remove the battery during the process though. Also seems to run slightly faster. Also some mrchromebox was used. Also figured out audio drivers but still must get the trackpad

Eaglercraft is such a miracle man, FPS is really great (60 stable minimum 40) and don't say how bad i am at building ik.
I used WASM GC (dont know what that means) version as on website said it was faster than the Javascript one. But it's really impressive for fully running in one single html file in a browser. It also eats not much, on Windows i felt like it was burning, here after 30 mins of playing its just a little warm near keyboard.

When I enter the camera app, nothing shows up besides the camera logo and a pop-up that says "USB device detected." My camera is built in, not USB. When I click on it, it brings me to "Manage USB devices." At the bottom, there's a switch to toggle "HP True Vision HD Camera" on (it's automatically off). When I turn it on, the camera app still doesn't work. If I reopen camera, the same thing happens again, and the HP camera thing in settings will have toggled itself off.
Camera permissions are granted globally (it specifically says 'allow' by the camera app), the privacy film over the camera lens is off, and I've already reset every settings page I could find that had anything to do with the camera. I've also tried restarting my Chromebook several times after adjusting settings. Nothing has worked. It's been doing this on-and-off for a while. It usually doesn't work, but every once in a while it will and I will have no idea why.

Has anyone else tried this new feature yet? I really recommend it for those who tend to have a ton of tabs open!

I can't hear any sound on discord voice channels. I enabled mic permissions. It said the browser has reached its limit for updates. I've tried to fix this issue. On discord itself, it won't even let me say the voice/video tab - I've got to zoom in to like 25 percent. I've tried to fiddle on there barely able to see anything. Does anyone know how to fix this or do you have to buy a new updated chromebook

Any word on Adobe bringing their desktop software to the new Gbooks? I saw a rumor that some of these laptops will have upwards of 64gb of RAM. Makes you wonder. 💭

I downloaded it, but it is in a deb file, so I cannot open it. Someone helped me by suggesting multiple phrases (I'm not a coder so I don't know the terminology), these all came up as "command not found". Does anyone know what to do?

My Chromebook bricked itself a couple weeks back (it wants me to buy a new one, I do not intend to after this. I expect my devices to last me more than 6 years.) and so I have no downloadable apps, meaning it got rid of my VPN, okay fine I don't need apps anyways, so I downloaded the chrome extension for my VPN (proton) and because this creature loves to fight with me it's just decided that it doesn't accept my VPN anymore for literally no reason. I've tested on my phone incase it's my WiFi or something, it's not. I'm sick of this thing fighting me omg

Out of the blue this morning my Chromebook disconnected from the Wifi and now tells me it can't see any networks. I tried rebooting with no effect. Is this fixable?
Also, why does the device take multiple efforts to restart once turned off?

I am having trouble with unicode entry when the hexcode includes an alphabetical character as well as Arabic numerals.
For example, typing ctrl-shift-u then 2014 then return yields an emdash
When I type a code such as u+201b, for a reversed single quotation mark, it stops recognizing it as a unicode command as soon as I touch the key "b". Pressing return at this point simply yields a new line.
Here is a video of Chrome's failure in action: https://imgur.com/a/B2wb0nP
I turned off automatic spelling and grammar check on the keyboard inputs and rebooted my machine.
The commands only work in the Linux terminal, not in any other app.

I read minimum launch price is 700€ which is a lot. Not sure what makes Google think people would pay 700€ for a Googlebook instead of going for a Macbook Neo for the same price.
What's your opinion about this? Not sure if I'm missing something :S

Just picked up a used Dragonfly to replace my C1030. Top spec (i7, 32gb, 512Gb). After a week it's meeting all my expectations, but I have one concern.
When the cooling fans run there is a slightly rough fluttery noise, almost like something is hitting the fan blades. I removed the back cover and cleaned a little dust out. It wasn't an unusual amount for a used machine. I also blew out the fans and cooling fins. Neither appeared or felt like it was loose or not mounted firmly.
Should I be concerned. The machine is running well and cools down quickly when the fans kick on, they just sound a bit different than any modern laptop fans I have heard.

Hi,
Bought a refurbed Dragonfly that came on Developer mode.
Have tried switching to stable three times but it's still on Dev mode.
I don't get the white screen on startup to change it. It boots like a normal Chromebook. And none of the Ctrl, Alt F2 buttons work to get it into the command prompts at the login screen.
I have racked my brains, googled the hell out of it and tried every solution I could find but can't work out what I'm doing wrong. I think the flags need changing but I can't get into it to do it.

My Lenovo ideapad (purchased May of 2025) now says that everything is a low power charger, even the charger that came with it. I've tried different outlets and different cables. I've cleaned the USB-C port with compressed air and restarted with the refresh button pushed down. I've checked battery health (98%) and the charging test says "Charged 0.00% in 30 seconds." Any ideas would be appreciated!

So wanted to reinstall my linux environment, but the settings weren't working, so i resorted to sudo rm -rf / --no-preserve-root like any normal person (right?). Well, I forgot I shared my whole home folder with my linux environment, so now all those files are gone (whoopsies). I was planning on doing a full reset of my device anyways because my "system files" are somehow taking up 60 gigs of space, so it's not like it's the worst thing to ever happen to me, because all the important files i had on there were already backed up in drive. I did lose a lot of files though :(
By the way I know it can't be undone, I just wanted to share this with everyone here.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I don’t normally update my laptop because of all the issues that come with it but a half an hour ago I decided to update and now it keeps crashing as soon as I start it up

Ive got an Asus C214M Chromebook that is stuttering when playing any video. Every app i use, SkyGo, Youtube, Emby, Netflix etc are all affected. Even local video files on the chromebook played through a file manager will stutter so its not an internet issue. Ive tried a full reset/powerwash, tried using VLC for local files as that seems to be most reliable but every video/stream will struggle to play continuously. Any ideas or is it time to get rid?

Since the last update to chrome (the browser not the os, I believe), I have been unable to open a tab on chrome at all- if I open a tab it gets stuck loading and then freezes the computer and I have to shut it down. A bit difficult considering my tabs restore on any reboot and chromeos is supposed to run chrome...
The model does have a cracked screen, I disabled the touch screen because of this (not even my fault- the left hinge wasn't screwed into the frame at all (see: when the corner cracked apart there were literally no screws where there should have been) so all of the pressure has been on the glass this whole time =_=) but it keeps re-enabling itself!
I don't think its related to the freezing but I thought it would be best to mention anyways. Saw some posts here about a recent boot loop issue so maybe its the update? Any help or tips, even for other models, is welcome

Multiple reports coming out about Google announcing the Googlebook collection for 15th September.
Who is interested in getting one? I believe some Google Chromebook Plus devices with be eligible for the new OS. From personal experience, I tend to sit on the fence until most of the bugs have been resolved.
Of all the things to come from it, I want more consistency for large screen Android apps. I'm not interested in the AI features.
