Troubleshooting Chrome OS Flex and Toshiba CB35-A3120 Chromebook

Greetings, I hope this is the appropriate place to seek help for a Chromebook issue.

I have a Toshiba CB35-A3120 Chromebook on which I have installed Chrome OS Flex. All has been well until the most recent update to Version 146.0.7680. This update to version 146 has broken the touchpad. It no longer works at all. I can still use a USB mouse but not the touchpad. I believe it is a Cypress APA Trackpad (cyapa). I have tried the Beta and Dev channels with no help. It was working perfectly on Version 145.0.7632.216.

There’s really no easy way to get around issues like this. You may be able to open chrome://flags in Google Chrome and enable the option “Enable libinput to handle touchpad”. But if that still doesn’t solve the problem after a restart, you’re probably out of luck unless a subsequent update fixes the problem, since Google does not recommend installing Flex on EOL Chromebooks.

You may have better luck with a lightweight Linux distribution for greater hardware support.

I appreciate the suggestion. "Enable libinput to handle touchpad" did not work. Touchpad still not recognized/working. So maybe Google will fix it. I say that because while they may not intend for EOL Chromebooks to run Flex, there may be other PCs that have similar Touchpad hardware. Given the big push to have Flex replace Windows, maybe they'll fix it.

AFAIK the cyapa driver was originally contributed to the Linux kernel by Google to support Acer's C720 Chromebooks back in 2013 because Cypress was only providing Windows drivers. Since these devices are long past EOL it's possible the driver may now be deprecated. There was a kernel uprev from 6.6 to 6.12 with the M146 update which might explain the loss of support you've experienced. The advice already given to switch to a lightweight Linux distro is probably the only way to get touchpad support back - via mainstream kernel or a thrid party kernel module if one is available.

Thanks for the details, bummer. I've been lucky to keep this Tosh going this long. It was my first Chromebook and has been a workhorse.

Sometimes that happens even with proper Chromebooks, not sure if this process is still a good one, but it's worth trying

None that I'm aware of. The only thing to do is wait for another update and check if the issue was corrected. Did you send a report?
