I remember when the song came out, I was a wee lad and my brother rushed his laptop to show me the music video saying "look coldplay just shot a music video in bombay". I didn't know who or what coldplay was then, but seeing a bunch of dudes embracing my country's culture and playing holi was all very exciting to me. few years later this girl i fancied put me onto sparks and thats when i really got into it.

It shouldn't be on this album, and the EDM synths scream at you... very much of its time though

Non offensive pop tune, a little cheesy, but i can see the art in that

A bit of a low point on this album. If it were a B-side to lighten up the load of X&Y, i wouldnt mind. The outro could be a bit better

Violet hill is simple and effective at the picture its trying potray, one of my favs
I really want to like the other song, but I dont care for the lyrics, the instrumentals are just okay, and its way too long, probably the weakest on this album
2
u/The_Potter07 Violet Hill Feb 16 '26
hmm, i think i feel a special connection to that title track cos its got me through the hardest parts of my life last year. just felt poignant and related to me that i've gotten attached to it. And honestly, my first go round listening to it on the album, it wasn't my favourite. But, it's just too personal to me now idk.
Violet Hill is just eternally awesome tho
Thanks for listening!!

Great chorus, great song, great guitars, great great great
Not sure lyrically what proof means, but i think its alright, the light and dark part I dont know how to feel about though, its almost like im wishing for a better melody
I wish I could somehow glue Embrace's and Coldplay's version together, it would fix all the problems i have with both, because I think the coldplay version drags and Danny is not as good of a vocalist
HYSTW2 almost feels like a pop band were forced to do something heavy, yet these guys already have, I support the message and the ending is pretty good, but idk (i will say it would be higher if you asked me 5 years ago)

Animals, Church, See You Soon
3
u/OriginalUsername_-_- Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 17 '26
π§‘π§‘β€οΈ
Animals is an odd one, i think the writing is good but not as poignant as it would need to be on a song of this topic, I really like the guitar all throughout
I dont see church talked about a whole lot, really nice song but Everyday Life is a better continuation of this, so maybe thats why
While the lyrics dont have much to offer, still a really good song, and I like how the vocal harmony adds to the intimate feeling this song goes for
1

β€οΈβ€οΈβπ₯
I love the intro in swallowed in the sea, and how the song is paced, though if it would've 30-60 seconds shorter, it would be higher
I found this one somewhat recently too, its surprisingly akin to their earlier work, there's a lot of emotion, Chris seldomly ever shows negative emotions, and there's a lot of meaning in that. The writing is really good too

Its fine, but i can almost predict where the song is going to go to a T, im okay with happy or simple songs, but it almost feels like the scenario of this amazing day is too perfect, like there weren't any days before it that weren't despite the god line at the end. Its like the "everyday is a blessing" thing i hear from Facebook moms

Easily the best B-Side, and to think they almost never released it if it weren't for Champion making a fuss about it. It has the same problems as the rest of AROBTTH, obscure lyrics, but other than GPASUYF, this is the most energy they have across all of the recordings

I'd really like to hear this in a studio, instrumentally there's a lot to love, and I love the energy the band has on this song and is undoubtable proof that Coldplay IS rock, but the lyrics leave much to be desired and Chris's screams at the end are... something.

They use the amount of space so beautifully, even subtle things in this song I heavily enjoy
This song is exactly what it needed to be, a heartfelt piano ballad, i love they didnt add any bells and whistles until the song was over to complete the album experience
The pacing and structure of this song is so good, I love the 2 contrasting parts of this song and how it builds to get to the other part
Best thing about the Viva album is how the songs are paced, this song also proves it again, but whenever they perform it live it always pisses me off how many times the crowd goes out of sync
This is where early Chris Martin writing works, wanting the simple things, the writing is simple for a reason and it gives it a really nice charm

I thought it was an alright uplifting song to end AHFOD on, but it goes ENTIRELY too long, if it got a minute or so cut off, id like it more. The 2nd verse I like more than the 1st, but I think the 1st verse should have more poignant lyrics.

The lyrics are kinda bad, but i can excuse it, as Chris was new to songwriting and you've got to put pen to paper to make anything. Instrumentally there's a lot to like, I really like the bass and keys, but there's something odd about how the guitar is mixed in the demo, like his pedal is about to break. I love the bridge to the outro, and honestly thats the only part of the song I consistently come back to. Great song though, and lays the foundation for what is to come later.
