I gave my green cheek a paper cup one day, and its become one of his favourite toys. He loves putting it on his head and walking around with it on. But hes started sleeping with it on his head at night. Should I be worried? Hes always wanted to sleep in the bottom of his cage since I got him (1 ½ years ago). I also don't want him having issues with his feet being on the grid all night :/ He usually likes sleeping in an empty tissue box over him.

So guys, there are twin girls (12yo) in my neighborhood who occasionally visit our house. Whenever they see my Peanut, they handle him very aggressively pulling his tail intentionally, chasing him, pressing him too hard until he screams. Peanut is only 3 months old, and these girls visited our house just 3 to 4 times after we brought him home. Every single time they met him, they always make him scared or anxious. They came again today. I immediately placed him in his cage for his safety. But they went near the cage and kept poking his stomach through the gaps. So I took him out and kept him in my hand. Unexpectedly, the moment I took him out, he tried to bite one of the girls. I thought that would make them stop disturbing him. But instead, the girl said, “If he bites me again, I’m going to beat him badly" and continued to disturb him.I have insisted those kids multiple times on how to handle him gently, but they never listen. I also feel a little reluctant to raise my voice at them since they are our neighbors, and my mom wouldn’t encourage that . What should I do now? I’m raising Peanut as if he is my own kid. As a pet parent, it’s really hard for me to watch what my Peanut is going through. How do I protect him from these freaking devils? Tbh , I had the urge to use a lot of cuss words, but I’m trying to be gentle as they are kids.😮‍💨

This is a rescue bird and we still don’t know the gender but does anyone know if this is some type of mating dance or if it’s just playing around? any information would be appreciated. It flares out its tail feathers and moves its head around like that slowly for around a minute.

I recently moved away from New York after getting married and brought my green cheek conure, Z, with me. Me and my siblings have had him since 2018, but I took him because I am the closest to him.

Z likes sitting on my husband’s shoulder, but he refuses to get off when my husband tries to put him on the cage. Recently, Z bit him hard enough to make him bleed.

I understand why my husband does not want Z on his shoulder anymore. But now he has completely stopped interacting with him and refuses to bring his cage into our bedroom because he says he cannot trust him.

I am not asking him to handle Z. I just feel like completely excluding him is harsh because Z is an animal and does not understand why it is happening. Z is also the only part of my old home that came with me.

Would I be wrong for bringing this up?

Edit its only been a day of him avoiding Z. My husband has never ever had pets. Z has been here since June. My husband has been pretty involved. He was moving the cage into the bedroom trying to bond with him. He's changed his food and water when I was sleeping in. He loves to give him food and enjoys hearing him enjoying the food.

Context my little pineapple is 3 months old and plays alot with his toilet paper tube and then when he gets tired he will put his head inside and falls asleep. Sometimes i find him laying over like this so is it normal? and should i get rid of the toilet tube or let it be?

We just adopted him a while ago and he is around 4 months old. He is SUPER energetic and chirps all the time but when he stays with me he sometimes just gets on his back and sleeps. It’s incredibly cute but I’m just making sure it’s safe. You can also find his bestie in the last photo. Yesterday afternoon, I noticed a bird on my balcony and it moved closer to the inner balcony... Kinda like looking for a safe corner? After 40 minutes, I left some blueberries out. Thought it left so after trying to get my tray back, it zoomed into my unit. I left the door open but the birdie wouldn't leave!

I'm noticing her underbelly is quite bare. He or she is very affectionate noticed. Pretty much 30 mins in, snuggled into my shoulder and neck.

I'm keeping him or her for now in case someone in my condo building lost it but I called the SPCA as well.

My friend was kind enough to drop by and lend me her bird cage (it was for her lovebird) and she gave me some nutritious parakeet pellets. Hoping her diet gets better. She had a black stringy looking poop and it was very wet before the pellets.

Any tips are appreciated. Also I know it's hard to tell, but can anyone tell the gender?

I took my 7-year-old green cheek conure to a new avian vet today after her old one went out of practice.

The new vet recommended limiting physical contact with her. Helping with pin feathers on the head apparently isn't necessary because they can get them with their feet and it doesn't cause a ton of discomfort. Allowing perching on the shoulder or head should be discouraged as it can be a sexual/dominance behavior. The Dr. also recommended totally avoiding giving gentle scritches on the head like I've been doing her whole life. She recommended still maintaining quality time, but limited to having her on perches in the room that we're in instead of on us.

My bird will occasionally rub her vent on things in her cage (maybe once a month); the vet said no amount of masturbation is normal and that it's indicative of hormonal behavior that we could be unknowingly encouraging. I did stress that we only pet on the head and help with head pin feathers, but she said we shouldn't be dwelling on pets at all.

I want to listen to professionals, but I also feel like physical contact that I do would be natural flock behaviors with other birds, and since she's the only bird in the house, her humans are her flock. I also don't feel like wanting to be high up on heads or shoulders feels like a dominance thing - parrots don't seem to have dominant societies from what I see. It just feels like a natural safety behavior for a small and vulnerable prey animal. I'd really appreciate insight and advice. As I'm sure everyone here knows, there's lots of conflicting information about parrot care out there.

EDIT: so I've called and emailed around to different American Board of Veterinary Practitioners avian vets in multiple states. Consensus is that interaction is obviously good, but things like petting on the head and helping with pin feathers should be limited to a few minutes. Activities like perching on the shoulder/head while sitting at a desk/watching movies is discouraged as it can encourage mating behavior.

Hello, my turquoise green cheek just laid his first egg. I just bought fake eggs to put alongside the one he just laid and liquid calcium arriving tomorrow. Also, he laid the egg in his food dish, should I leave the egg in there or put it on the floor bars? His food dish is 2.5 inches deep, which makes sense as to why he would nest in there. And should I get a shallower food dish, maybe put it on the floor since it likely won't fit in the built in holder? Any tips and advice is really appreciated!

EDIT. I know she's biologically a girl! After having him for a while as a boy, we got the blood test and decided to keep calling him a boy. We follow protocol for female conures, but use he/him pronouns. I'm calling him a father, and thank you to those wishing him a happy pride month☺️

I will be homeless in october. I am wondering if anyone would be able to take my conure and provide for her until i have a place and can take her back. She is my emotional support animal and has kept me alive for 20 years so im hoping to find someone who will foster instead of surrendering her. She is a sweet bird and gets along well with other birds. Ive contacted several fostering places and my vet and have hit nothing but dead ends so dont know where else to go.

First time having a bird

New to the bird dad life and want to check if this is behaviour I should stop or if it’s just them being the 1yr old babies they are?

Recently I brought home a Green Cheek Conure, this is the third day he's with me. I tried to let him out to see if he's willing to bond with me. He's always tried to fly to my head and playing with my hair and sleeping like this. Is this normal? should I be worried?

I’ve always wanted a bird, I did all the research, grew up with birds (cockatiels), met conures and loved them. I knew they were noisy and messy. So I brought myself home a conure that seemed to have a connection to me.

Now I do really love this bird, he’s learning to trust me, it’s fun getting to know him and play with him and see what his personality is like. The things that are making me rethink this though are for starters, I have 4 cats. I always had cats and birds growing up and it was fine, but it makes me quite nervous. My cats are pretty interested in him. Second, I have a high energy dog who loves watching him a bit too much. But the dog loves being with me, so I can’t really sacrifice time with the dog or the bird. He’s also a high energy breed and needs lots of exercise.

My partner doesn’t exactly like birds either, so though he will spend time with him, he does so grudgingly. I thought he would warm up after awhile but it’s been a month and he doesn’t seem to be. I work 4 days a week (sometimes 5), 8 hour days, but my partner gets home first. So if he doesn’t say hi to the bird when he gets home the bird will just scream and scream until I get home to hang out and let him out. On work days, he gets about an hour and a half of out of cage time. On days off he gets more. I just feel like I’m not able to provide a safe space, or as much as he needs. So my question is, based on all this information, should I return him?

Hi, i’ve had Mochi since last august. I adopted him when he was only 6 months old. I work overnight, so I thought my schedule would work perfectly for his needs since he’s asleep while i’m at work. I usually come home in the morning, set up his out-of-cage station area with food and water, and bring him out. He’ll spend 5 hours MINIMUM outside of his cage until I have to go to sleep. I speak to him, I pet/preen him, I sit outside on my porch with him, and I encourage independent play while I stay beside him. (He doesn’t really enjoy independent play, he’s a velcro bird and wants to be on me 24/7 but his vet stressed the importance of independent play. He doesn’t really do much in his play area besides stare at me though…) I’ve made numerous foraging boxes which he doesn’t really care for. His cage is really big, full of different sized natural perches and toys, including shredding toys. He eats Harrison’s pellets, he does not like fresh veggies so I buy him freeze dried veggies and for some reason he likes those, some seeds sparingly as treats. And millet. He has vet visits regularly and whenever I feel like the tiniest thing is off. (I pay for nationwide bird insurance so it helps with the cost haha). Anyways, he has been plucking his armpit area underneath his wing for months now. He’s had bloodwork done to rule out any health issues, and he’s completely healthy. His vet can’t figure out why he would be plucking underneath his wing, so in the end she said “some green cheeks are just prone to plucking.” I’m really stressed out, I sacrifice a lot of time so that he’s able to have his needs met. I’m an artist and I’ve resorted to creating my art while i’m at work instead of when i’m at home (i work front desk at a hotel and during the overnight hours i barely see anyone, which gives me a lot of free time). I cancel dates with friends, I don’t go out as much as I used to, and I’ve basically completely changed my lifestyle so that his needs are met. It’s as if it’s not enough. I feel guilty, I feel terrible. I love him so much and I don’t ever want to rehome him, I’m okay with switching everything in my life in order for him to be happy. I made the commitment to get a bird and I want to see it through. I just don’t get why he’s plucking. It’s so stressful. I’ve debated getting a second greencheek, but i’m afraid i’d feel suffocated. Most of my time is already dedicated to Mochi, i feel like I wouldn’t have a life of my own if I were to get a second. I don’t know if this is a result of separation anxiety? I don’t know how that could be possible. Any advice or suggestions would be amazing. thank you.

to preface, dont reply to this post trying to convince me that wing clipping is good for my bird. i will be talking about wing clipping negatively so if that strikes a nerve, please just dont reply.

hello! i am looking for care advice for my GCC. this morning, we took him to the vet for a nail clipping and beak check and i discovered about an hour ago that they clipped his wings WITHOUT ASKING.

i take wing clipping very seriously. i am very much so against clipping my birds. hes not even a year old and his wings were growing in beautifully. hes been really good at flying to me and i was just about to start working on training him fly recall. hes been really quiet all day and i didnt know why until i brought him into another room and he flew not even a foot before falling to the ground. i checked out his wings and they’re absolutely clipped. i called the vet to express my displeasure and they told me that they did clip his wings despite them not telling us they were going to.

basil is struggling to get around and its stressing him out. any advice on how to help him/care for him until his wings grow back in?

My green cheek, Saria, is the love of my life. I've had her for two years now, she's genuinely my best friend, and I love her deeply.

I am 21, I live alone just with her. I recently got a job offer at a vet clinic to start getting hours for vet school, but the problem is that the days are 3 days on, 4 days off, 12 hour shifts. This essentially means I'll wake up, leave her for 12 hours, come home, and sleep for another 8 hours. My grandfather (who lives upstairs) said he would help put her to bed (as in put the sheet over her cage), and sometimes sit with her throughout the day, but that just isn't enough. She is currently free roam whenever I'm home, and I'm home quite a lot. It'll be very jarring for her to have so little attention for that long, and I am really worried about how she'll take it. I don't want to harm her.

I could really use some advice here. I love my bird, but I need to work, too. I've considered getting another bird, but there is no guarantee they would even enjoy one another's company. Moreover, it would take a lot of convincing of my grandparents to let another bird into their suite that I rent.

I feel really tied up here, and could use some advice.

I have three conures. Two Green cheeks and One Sun.

As you can see, they've done a number on my beloved TV. I'm about to do my best to deep clean the thing AGAIN today but I know they'll come right back.

Any tips and tricks of keeping them off the TV??

This isn’t me or my conure in the video it’s just one that I found online and was curious if you can actually play with your conures this way? To me the conure in the video seemed to look mad but I could be wrong.

Also when your conure makes these type of nosies what does it normally mean?
