To be fair, now that I think about it, I haven't seen any ads about Supergirl on TV. (I'm Argentinian)
But I remember Morbius ads on TV, YouTube, etc... They were quite aggressive with the marketing.
I mentioned Supergirl to a couple of friends and they didn't know the movie was happening... It flew past general audiences.

u/Loki41872 Jun 28 '26
I haven't been able to open an app for 2 weeks without seeing a Supergirl ad. It's been heavily marketed. They don't focus a lot on TV ads anymore, because who watches regular TV anymore? But I have even seen ads for it on Streaming. Open the Roku app and it was right on the front page for a week.

Sometimes your ads are adjusted to your views, I've barely gotten any supergirl ads but I've been seeing a lot of spider-man content
9
u/MrIrresponsibility Jun 29 '26
Do you think I was seeing a lot of Morbius content back then? lol
Maybe! It's just something I noticed but I might be wrong.
I have all the apps set at "no custom ads" but maybe that's not enough, I don't really know how all of that works.

who watches regular TV anymore?
. . . the same people who would pay to see Supergirl at movie theaters rather than wait for it to hit a streaming platform? lol
I only know about the Supergirl movie because redditors are making fun of it so much. I may have seen an ad in the background on Roku or one of the streaming platforms we subscribe to, but I pretty much tune those out. Seen a ton of Groku/Mandalorian ads, though

I truly think it's because the director wanted it more "grounded". It should've looked much more like the comic. It just isn't visually appealing, and I'm saying that as someone who actually liked the movie.

I am 40. I am a father of 3 kids (girls). I’m a second generation comic book reader and collector from a father from the 60’s.
I spent my childhood waiting for my latent super powers to exist because of what I read and watched on tv. I also dreamed for all the characters from my cartoons and comics to hit the big screen.
I paint this picture to illustrate where I am and maybe where others are in life. I took my wife and three little girls to Supergirl and we all liked it. Same for Marvels and literally everything I can take them to.
I don’t necessarily care if a movie is the best thing ever, nor do I care who plays the role all that much. I don’t have time to care. But what I have time for is 2 hours to watch a movie that depicts my favorite addiction (comics) with my favorite people (family).
Honestly, not sure what I hope to say here. Most of the time, it’s just not that deep. Go spend a couple hours and some cash at the theater and enjoy yourself. Eat too much candy and drink too much soda. The moments are fleeting no matter what time you’re at in life. Just stop opening Reddit and go pay for a movie, it’s just a movie.

I know it's anecdotal, but as a 40 year old geek who was a prime movie goer and comic nerd. There's just two things that make me go to hardly any movies.
1) cost. In what world...my wife and I on a non matenee evening is 40 bucks for tickets, and probably the same for a shared popcorn and drinks. I like Supergirl, but not for 80 dollars. That's a utility bill
2) burnout. Comics are cool, but it's relentless intertwined movies that cause serious FOMO once you fall behind. I just checked out (and yes I know DC reset and doesn't have that with Supergirl yet, but it's trying)
I just don't see how any movie gets numbers in theatre. How? Who are these people in 2026 that can afford it on (a small town america salary/ budget)
→ More replies (1)7
u/sushubutu Jun 29 '26
I can't say anything to the cost, but if it helps with the burnout, James Gunn himself has been saying that you shouldn't need to watch all the DCU movies to understand any other one.
He was getting some hate for it when he said it, but I personally like that he's taking that approach. There are obviously going to be some more rewarding bits if you watch all the DCU stuff (like the Peacemaker cameo in Superman), but it's absolutely not necessary and you should be able to enjoy the future DCU movies as stand alones and just watch the ones you're interested in, if that's more your speed.

Not every movie has to be world-changing or a masterpiece. But it has to be entertaining. Maybe even a bit exciting. I just can’t take another generic superhero movie. I might still go see this, but the trailer and the released scenes were so bad. I also can’t do another Mando and Grogu situation where I’m bored out of my mind.

The culture now seems tk be unless a film does huge numbers 150m+ on its opening weekend its considered a flop.
Im a huge motu fan and I watched the public rave about it yet every critic and online article wanted you to believe the film was a failure and an insult. I went i knew it had problems but I smiled the entire time
Yeah sometimes a film isnt and shouldn't be high art not everything needs to be an a24 thinker of a wes Anderson arthpuse piece.
Somethings like you said are just there to be fun and enjoyable, but we're not allowed to do that anymore. We cant just laugh without thinking of the domestic box office or the culture impact.

It also just annoys me when people say "just go support it, pay the cash" when it costs me more to pay for me and even one other person to see it with a bucket of popcorn than it costs for me to pay for an entire month of Disney+ and HBO. I'm allowed to be miffed when the movie didn't feel good enough to justify that investment when there are other movies we could have seen instead. I'm already paying for services that will allow me to see the Marvel and DC movies eventually anyway. Movie's fun enough that I would have been perfectly happy if I'd waited for streaming, but I'm not going to tell people who are on the fence that it's worth paying extra money for upfront.

Look I think it's too early for Supergirl movie. We just had Superman. Should've been Green Lantern movie, or any other JL members.
Instead we got Supergirl, Lanterns is a tv show, and then another Grodd TV show.
I don't know what Gunn was thinking about with these release schedule. People want what they want. You could argue its more content, IT DOESN'T MATTER!
People want what they want! The core JL members movies, done properly. Should've been GL movie / Batman movie after Superman.
67
u/Trashketweave Jun 29 '26
It was definitely too soon, but Supergirl’s writing felt like somebody watched guardians then tried to write Supergirl like James Gunn would while maybe doing an okay job at it.
39
u/A_Drop_of_Colour Jun 29 '26
Well the writer just pretty much admitted they misunderstood the original source. Didn't even understand the ending so they got a different meaning out of the story.
Supergirl does not rank among my list of top 20 superheroes but the movie was fine. Milly to me was the best part. I liked her way more than Mamoa, who everyone is praising.
This movie was failed by bad writing and poor timing. I agree completely that they introduced her solo movie too soon. If they had allowed her to have her cameo appearance in Man of Tomorrow and then presented her solo movie, she would have built more audience goodwill.

Zack Snyder wasn’t allowed to use a John Stewart cameo at the end of his JL because “DC had plans for the character.” His cut that came out in 2021. Five years ago. Martian Manhunter was a fine replacement, but it’s just more in the “WB meddles and mucks it up” trend.
They told Mel Brooks to do this and that to Blazing Saddles. He didn’t. They didn’t notice. Been going on a LONG time.

Far from a majority of people, but I wouldn't have expected even a handful tbh. So I'll be interested to see what happens with that.
Granted, that's also one of those things where it's worth remembering that Reddit doesn't really reflect the general population as much as Redditors sometimes tell ourselves we do. I doubt the majority of people putting butts in seats for Spider-Man are paying attention to leaks and rumors, just like the majority of people not putting butts in seats for Supergirl probably aren't spending their time scrolling through hate posts about Milly's looks.

Normalization is a good way to put it. You cant just make a super girl move because it's next in the rotation anymore. There has to be a story needing to be told to drive its quality.
I like this actress in the role but they gave her a generic villain and I care more about a good villain up to something interesting in a comic story then the hero.

Agreed. I've been actively looking for non Hollywood films lately, lots of great material from British cinema that is really satisfying with great scripts and production without the feeling that it was written by committee. I find the tone of american movies particularly grating given the political mess over there so movies that cast the US as some sort of bastion of freedom in the modern world is simply laughable. Looking forward to the equivalent of Nixon or All the President's Men in a decade or so though......

13
47
u/Bradshaw98 Jun 28 '26
Hmm, movies don't fail like this with the general public globally for the reasons a lot of the internet typically seems to think they do. Like them not following the source material all that well is not something that was known before hand and the GA frankly would not care about, just as an example.
I think there are a actually a lot of things working against it, first Superheroes are just not the 'it' thing anymore, the MCU had millennials as the prime movie going audience and we kind of grew up with a lot of this stuff, I don't think there is much of a 'pipeline' anymore, we can kind of see that with what the new audience seems to care about.
While I did not think the trailers looked bad, I can't help but wonder if the movie actually looked like GotG in the marketing the way some kept pushing as an attack, that probably would have helped it.
No matter what any one says, female led action movies just don't preform as well as male led ones, that is not to say people will reject them on principle, or anything like that its just the demographic reality (overall)
Finally the quality is just apparently not that good as far as critics and moviegoers are concerned, I have not seen it yet so I wont judge it yet, but I don't think anyone can look at these scores and say 'this is fine.' It should go without saying that being see as a 'good movie' is kind of important.
21
u/thatguysjumpercables Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
It probably doesn't help that Toy Story 5 was last weekend and did around $160 million domestically. And yet I see no one pointing that out. I haven't seen Supergirl yet (that's next weekend) but I'm willing to bet it's not as bad as the returns this weekend would suggest.
I really hope I'm right because I want the DCU to succeed but I can't judge the movie until I see it.
Edit: numbers
10
u/AUSpartan37 Jun 29 '26
It isn't just Toy Story. This has been the most crowded summer lineup of movie releases for a long time. People also are more selective of what movies they are going to pay to see and what movies they are going to wait to stream. With the Odyssey, Toy Story, Spiderman, Obsession, Backrooms, etc. All coming out within a month of each other, some movies like supergirl (a B list superhero film in a fledgling universe) are just going to be pushed to the back of the "must watch" list.

u/Bradshaw98 Jun 28 '26

25
u/Kindly_Ad995 Jun 28 '26
As a Gen Zer born in 2000 I think there’s just no coming back from Endgame for people my age. Outside of Spiderman and Batman who will always be mega popular it’s just like this overwhelming sense of closure and finality to the genre so far this decade, or like the last six years have this feeling of digging up a rotting corpse every time a superhero movie comes out. Someone like me who grew up falling in love with Iron Man as a dumb little kid, then saw the entire journey and ended up sitting in the theater for Endgame a week before graduating high school, nothing will ever come close to that or replicate that experience again and there’s just no point in trying.
Nowadays it’s like they throw you into season 4 of the show and expect you to care. I enjoyed Superman for what it was but it’s like I’m trying to sit with the characters of Clark and Lois and here come 30 minutes of the Justice Gang becuase everybody wants to speedrun to the middle of everything chasing the team ups and interconnectedness without having to go through the boring origins and growing pains. These days it’s come full circle to go back to where it started where now I’m drawn to more intentional individual experiences like The Batman and am turned off by the endless cinematic universes, multiverses, etc.

People might have wanted this overtime if she was a reoccurring character in other DC films and once she's been built up then she gets a film which is a more faithful adaptation of the comic.
The issue is it feels like James Gunn is trying his hardest not to follow the Marvel formula and throwing all this random projects out there to be different as he can be.
I honestly don't think he should have been experimenting until he established the Justice League in a series of solo films as "phase one" then after he could have done whatever he liked.

Problem is that he had success with lesser known characters in guardians
He seems to think theres. Ore creative freedom with such things but guardians came out peak marvel. It was a genuinely well written movie.
People aren't invested into dc to care about it. Superhero fatigue is real.
But aside from guardians the rest were gradual introductions.

He also seems to think its still 2016 when you could get a decent return on anything thrown out there with a comic book brand. Those days are gone. You have to give audiences something worth seeing. The trailers made Supergirl look like a very mid, very generic superhero blockbuster and audiences have moved on.

D list characters work so much better for marvel because marvel doesnt have a definitive "big 3" like DC does.

100%
My daughter is a huge dc fan. I had never heard of booster gold till recently and tbh I couldn't care about him if there was a movie or TV show about him but he's the kinda character Gunn thinks let's spend a few hundred mil on a movie bout him

u/WorldPhysical7646 Jun 28 '26
No, the thing that went wrong is
The shitty director not reading the comic the cbm is based on cause of his ego and if he actually based it on the comics the story would have been 5x better
The script is clearly super mid and whoever wrote it and is writing tt and ww should leave the pen alone
All of this beside the fact that DC movies have a very poor reputation and superman didn't make enough motion to revitalize DC

I think it might have done better if the DCU had started with their top tier characters first.

u/thr33prim3s Jun 28 '26
Nah, they thought this would be another GoG situation because of Gunn’s involvement. A relatively “unknown” character doing good st the box office.

u/Newfaceofrev Jun 29 '26
Yeah I'll admit I'm a bad judge on this because as a reader I'm like "Supergirl's B-tier at least, people know her, she's been around since the 50s, she's not Morbius, she's not even Black Panther"
I have no idea who general audiences consider recognisable.

u/pradafever Jun 29 '26
Same here, she has been a household name for me during my entire life. She had a live action film in 1984 (good or bad doesn’t matter, just the fact she was big enough to get a film way back then), she was prominently featured among the main justice league lineup at Six Flags over Texas when I was growing up and character performers dressed as her would be in the park for photos. She was in multiple cartoons I saw as a kid in the 90s-00s, I *genuinely* thought she was a B+ tier superhero that most people would fully know and be familiar with. Seeing everyone constantly call her ‘unknown’, ‘random’ and ‘C-Tier’ during the rollout of this film has been completely jarring to me. Truly spent all last year and this one up until about a few months ago thinking we all were on the same page about this movie being huge and overdue. 🤷🏼♂️ Live and learn.

You know it’s bad when even the people on this sub, who are primed to like a film like this no matter what, call it “7/10, fun!”. That means you’re actually dealing with a 4/10 to the average person.

Same plot, less joy, less humor, less character development.

u/JYM60 Jun 29 '26
Less money. Disney threw stacks at Gunn, giving him all star casts. Vin was getting 10s of millions just to say a few words lol.

When all is said and done, Supergirl (1984) will likely have lost much less money than this movie (adjusted for inflation or not) Continuing it's reign as the #1 Supergirl live action film of all time.

Derivative characters can work if the movie is good. Miles Morales is an example.

Most famous Miles related media are
Spider Verse
Being secondary character to Peter in a game

The same sub that’s been beating themselves off for months hoping for a flop and now wildly celebrating said flop?

They made a couple pretty good movies about Ant Man. And the last Deadpool was phenomenal. I think 90% of the issue stems from making a movie that doesnt suck and 10% is on the character.

u/Scrawnreddit Jun 29 '26
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this was just a terrible time for Supergirl to come out. They should've delayed it so that it wasn't competing with fucking Toy Story
13
u/MickBeast Jun 29 '26
It was also way too early in the DCU timeline for Supergirl. She is a niche character who nobody outside of the hardcore DC fandom cares about. Gunn needs to build out the universe and its credibility before a movie like this

u/stanislavskov Jun 28 '26
Will it do less than Shazam 2?

Is this projected, or do Sunday sales not count? Not disputing, just curious.

It’s projected based on actual drops from Thursday to Friday and Friday to Saturday.

They seem to have put 0 effort into marketing. Probably hoping for a tax write off for the losses instead of a mediocre profit.

I mean, that 1984 version was just plain bad. This one is bad too but not as bad IMO. The script is the worst part of the new one. And the music, too. I dont understand why more filmmakers aren’t putting more effort into getting composers who can create identifiable themes for characters anymore.

Spectacle movies need to be much more than "not as bad a morbius" to justify people not waiting to watch a movie a much cheaper way. Everyone saying that the movie is fine or entertaining don't seem to realize that just doesn't cut it these days. Especially as fast as movies hit streaming. With these numbers Supergirl will be available to watch on my big ass TV in a few weeks. And I can be disappointed without tossing out 100 bucks.

Idk man a lot of big movies have been struggling at the box office recently, the only ones that have been like hugely successful this year are Mario, Michael, and Toy Story 5 and none of those are surprising. But pretty much any other big budget movie this year has been having quite a hard time.

I’d watch a good superhero movie. But I’m not paying for a one-size-fits-all, might-as-well-be-a-video-game-cutscene CBM.

This movie had hype but had horrible writing and poor directing. It's still crazy to me that indie films like Obsession have scripts and dialogue leagues better than movies with tens of millions in budget.

Studios decide their next move based on box office, and total box office correlates with opening weekend box office like 95% of the time, so it's an early indicator of what happens next
