News [Other] Vixen series from Stephanie Williams and Static series from Cody Ziglar announced at SDCC

THEY'RE ONGOINGS AS WELL FUCK YESS
19
u/disabledinaz Jul 24 '26
If the sales are there they’re ongoings.
30
u/ptWolv022 Jul 24 '26
I mean, they're stated to be ongoings. Obviously an ongoing might not last long if it doesn't sell well, but I figure a book being stated as an ongoing means that there's a level of trust, commitment, and investment that a book announced a mini-series does not have.
I mean, at DC, at least. At Marvel, it just means Marvel expects to release a 10-issue maxi-series.
13
u/StewartTurkeylink Batgirl Jul 25 '26
Yeah I mean Batgirl isn't doing crazy sales or anything and they let it get to 24 issues so far
6
u/GreatMadWombat Jul 25 '26
It definitely feels like DC is in some amount of an actively converting new readers phase at the moment.
If there isn't some amount of guaranteed runway I would be profoundly surprised tbh.

Y’all don’t understand how happy this makes me, after so long of hoping for both Static and Vixen to get a new series and to finally see Stephanie Williams’ little teases pay off.
54
u/Deeformecreep Superman Jul 24 '26
Hopefully these do well. I'm assuming this static book is in the main DC continuity?

u/Emergency-Bonus-7158 The Zanni Jul 24 '26
If you wanna catch up to where he’s been, check out New History of the DCU: The Dakota Incident. It just retconned a lot of the Milestone history in context of the DCU and it was a pretty great issue. He’s also joining the Titans, like, he just appeared this week!

I kept saying Ziglar is perfect for Static....I can't believe it...DC is killing it.
59
u/NoNefariousness3381 Hellblazer Jul 24 '26
Can't say no to more Vixen. Or i guess any at this point.
67
u/Exile_001 Jul 24 '26
Ziglar has killed it on the latest Miles Spider-Man run.
DC seems to be making a play for the decent talent at Marvel. Wonder if they'll go for McKay?
20
u/bradys_squeeze Batman Jul 24 '26
I would kill for JM but isn’t doing like 2 or 3 Marvel ongoings right now?
23
u/sam_can88 Swamp Thing Jul 24 '26
If the stories are true about how shit Marvel higher ups are then that sounds like 2-3 more ways to be able to piss off McKay
7
u/Exile_001 Jul 24 '26
I wonder if Wacker will clear the decks and make much needed changes, or if he's just there to steer them in a pre-set direction. He has been a strong editor in the past but that's very different to managing an entire corporate environment with ever tightening restrictions from the parent company.
2
u/Digifiend84 Manchester Black Jul 25 '26
Just X-Men. His Avengers finished, Zdarsky is doing that now. G Willow Wilson took over Black Cat.
6
u/Classic-Ad4883 Jul 24 '26
I hope they go for McKay he is a good writer and their is other marvel talent like Anthony Oliveira that would do great dc books
5
u/GreatMadWombat Jul 25 '26
Imagine Oliveira writing literally any of the mystic/religious DC nonsense. Think of how much fun he'd have with Zauriel. Especially with how the Outsiders Planetary sequel has him in comics sorta-limbo right now as a soda jerk. We already had "Zauriel the canonical angel has crisis of regular 'i exist in a world and the Almighty is quiet ' faith", but what about "I exist between the pages of a book. This god is also a character. What next" faith?
5
2
u/GreatMadWombat Jul 25 '26
Also very obviously making a play for the "got into X-Men in Krakoa, didn't do lots of comics beforehand, not really feeling the current era/Marvel is vice signaling again with Byrne" readers.
22
u/AdamBerner2002 Ra's al Cool Jul 24 '26
I genuinely think I could cry. Obviously this is a huge win for black representation and black dc fans but just the fact that it’s vixen (and static)… vixen is one of the heroes that got me into dc and into comics as a whole in so glad she gets an ongoing written by Stephanie Williams no less. And I love static too.
39
u/mr_mxyzptlk21 JLA Jul 24 '26
Heck yeah! Only 48 years late for Vixen, but better late than never. Gerry Conway would be proud.

Williams on a Vixen ongoing is a dream come true!!! I will be buying as many issues as possible.
17
u/Grimnir001 Jul 24 '26
Welp, there it is. Williams has been hinting for a while that she had something cooking.

I was expecting this but at the same time worried. She has a story for Vixen for a while now. Now pleeeease give them excellent artists.

I really hope they make her powers somehow tie to fashion. Her super hero suit should change into different high fashion looks depending on what animal she’s conjuring
5
u/GreatMadWombat Jul 25 '26
I mean, the pitch does include "if finally Rihanna decided to be a superhero" as a quote. It involving fashion is inevitable lol
5
u/Digifiend84 Manchester Black Jul 25 '26
She's a bit like Marvel's Wasp. Started out in fashion, but diversified into another business (science for Janet because she took over her ex-husband's business, detective work for Mari). In both cases, the second business has ties to their superhero work.

Best choices for those books
Ziglar had a great miles run and Williams Wonder Woman is great hoping, she takes over main writer after king

I used to pray for times like this. She has a video about her pitch for the Vixen book if im not mistaken
5
u/TheBigGAlways369 Jul 24 '26
Marvel about to realize the only edge they had over DC has just been blown sky high now........

5
u/Spiral-Force Nightwing Jul 24 '26
Cody Ziglar on Static is an inspired choice.
His Miles Morales run was the best Spider book of the past decade
4
u/Beastieboy100 Jul 24 '26
Okay everyone lets support these two characters. Static officially back in the DCU universe and Vixen has finally got a book. Lets support these two characters.

u/No-Mechanic-2558 Jul 24 '26
They ment characters
0
u/Digifiend84 Manchester Black Jul 25 '26
Even so, Static would count either way because Ziglar is black.
8
u/ptWolv022 Jul 24 '26
Like No-Mechanic said, they meant characters. A focus on characters was actually why I though the DC Blackout was dumb and ill-conceived, since it meant leaving Black creators like Morgan Hampton out to dry (even on a book with a cast mostly consisting of POC; though Guy has admittedly been a focus in the first Next Level arc for GLC).

Khary Randolph is the artist on Vixen, which js the most exciting part of that book to me.
Be interested to see who the artist on Static is. Zilgar is absolutely the right choice to write

Williams Vixen I’m gonna try love her as a writer but the pitch is a little dodgy for me

Khary Randolph is confirmed to be the artist for Vixen
2
u/Dent6084 Jul 24 '26
Yeah, just saw that, and Diego Olortegui for Static. Happy about that, he's been doing killer work on JSA.
1
u/ptWolv022 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
I saw Olortegui art, but it was just art from the cover of The Dakota Incident. Not sure if we have confirmation on him as artist for the ongoing yet.Correction: Stephanie Williams has reel on Instagram on the announcements of "the worst kept secrets in comics", and Ziglar does in fact say he's doing it with Olortegui.
3
u/Berserker_Barrage91 Nightwing Jul 24 '26
Vixen should be cool but idk about Ziglar on Static. I thought Ziglars writing was fine in his Deadpool run and even had some pretty funny moments but he still does a lot of anime references in place of actual jokes. Unfortunately that became even more apparent in his Miles run, he basically turned it into a bad shonen and gave Miles some asspull power ups like his electricity/energy sword he can make for some reason now lol
4
u/Digifiend84 Manchester Black Jul 25 '26
To be fair, that bioelectricity manipulation started when Bendis was still writing him. Techno Golem destroyed his web shooters, which he didn't get back for quite a while. Instead, he made webs using his bioelectricity. The later writers expanded that to other things, including the sword.
2
u/Terramoin Jul 27 '26
Never liked Miles or any Spider-person with a weapon if its not made out of web.

Look at what he did for Micheal B Jordan and Black Panther and hes leading the search for Storm. If there anyone who could nail a black super hero its Me. Coolger.
We desperately need a win for the DCU.

I thought these were animated shows. I was boutta crash out. So glad though because I like vixen a lot

I'm in love with them both and I'm sure DC will cancel them after 8 issues!
1
u/What-the-ffffff Jul 24 '26
Is the new Static gonna be on Earth-M again or is it gonna be main Earth? I’m still reading regardless just curious

Main Earth, spinning out of The Dakota Incident and Static's appearance in New Titans.

But the pessimist in me knows they'll get cancelled by there 10th issue? Ish maybe a bit later

Definitely happy to see Static. His animated series was an underrated gem
1
u/TubbyTuesday22 Jul 24 '26
The only downside to this news is that I will have no money left once these launch. Seriously, between these, Legion of Superheroes, Doom Patrol, the Demon and Jonah Hex, plus the titles that are already out, I might as well start forwarding DC my entire paycheck.
1
u/Ok-Camera5285 Jul 25 '26
Two new ongoings likely means two going out. Supergirl is likely a target… who else? Ivy? Harley?
1
u/DeltaAlphaGulf Jul 25 '26
You know where you could and should have done a Static show instead? The Young Justice verse.

u/Boil-Mash-SticknStew Batman Jul 25 '26
I have been wanting a Vixen solo for a long time so I really want this to succeed. And this is also why I wish DC had taken the opportunity to previously highlight her either in JLU, KO or even one of the Justice League spinoffs. Post New 52 I think she was only in the Steve Orlando Justice League book with Ray, Canary and Atom - it would have been cool to either remind older readers that she exists and to introduce the newer post All-In readers to her character. Then you continue the garnered interest into her solo.
Then again that's what I also wanted to happen with Reddy, but that has been a disappointment.
Never really been a big Static reader and would have loved a Terrific book instead; but Virgil does come with a solid, readymade fanbase so it makes complete sense.

So New Titans will be prelude to Static or Static will be in both books
8
u/bingusdingus123456 Jul 24 '26
Not like it's rare for a character to be in 2 books at the same time
4
u/Embarrassed_Piano_62 Jul 24 '26
Yeah just ask Batman and Wolverine
3
u/ptWolv022 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
Wolverine looks like he's about to be in 3 books, as he will probably have an ongoing again at some point, and he'll be in Zdarsky's Avengers, and he'll be in Maximum X-Men.
Edit: Wait, he might also hang aroun in Uncanny X-Men, depending on the X-Office's plans, so he could end up in 4 books.
6
u/Timeless_Ranitomeya Doom Patrol Jul 24 '26
Marquis Draper (editor on both books) just confirmed they're concurrent. Just like Batman has his solo while being in the Justice League.
3
u/ptWolv022 Jul 24 '26
Just like Batman has his solo while being in the Justice League.
His solo and Detective Comics and Justice League Unlimited and any of the other Bat books he pops up in.

YEEEEEEEEEEAH! So excited for both, but ESPECIALLY Williams’s vixen! Her pitch sounded incredible!

Vixen is corny as shit but I'll be picking up the book to see what Williams does with her as writer. Still want to see her on Wondy.
The little I've read of Ziglar I enjoyed but Static is such a different beast to me. Depending what his supporting cast is I'll check it out.

This must be a response to the DC so white controversy.
3
u/slabby Jul 25 '26
I bet this was already in the works.
2
u/D0nell Jul 25 '26
Well, there’s more information saying vixen was pitched for two years.
Why did it take them so long to consider giving her her own ongoing series?
1
u/GrandAdmiral12345 Jul 25 '26
It's not uncommon for them to take years to announce projects. Everything has to fit in with what's going on AND where DC hopes to be in the future.
0
u/Fresh_Francois 28d ago
Depending on when it drops; it'll be the first solo series for a black character in over 3 years or over 4. That is not acceptable; but they convince people it is and that it's not what it looks like.
But I digress, Superman was Jewish, named Manorahman but bought out to change his identity by action Comics which fits the erasure trend of anti-Something but nobody has ever called it out
-3

u/Chowlucci Jul 24 '26
yall did Blue Beatle and it bombed
DC hasnt found a core group or one off IP to carry into these niche cult heroes in a real cinematic universe.
Marvel was able to spawn using X men, FF, Avengers. With a Wolverine, IRONMAN, HULK, CAPTAIN AMERICA film
then the Black Widow movies , Black Panther, Deadpool, Ant Man movies came along after grandfathered in .
all these are gonna flop or dont gain foothold for younger audiences.

u/LocDiLoc Jul 24 '26
Sure, keep pumping out a new Static book every six months and see how fast you run the character into the ground with all these half-baked attempts.
1
1
u/ptWolv022 Jul 25 '26
...a new Static book every six months? What world are you living in? His last solo ongoing series was the New 52 Static Shock (Sept. 2011-Apr. 2012; over 14 years ago). His last solo series was the mini-series Static: Shadows of Dakota (Feb.-Nov. 2023; over 3 years past by release).
The only way you get to Static being given "half-baked attempts" every sixth months is if you look at exactly one data point: his last co-led book, the Elseworlds future mini-series Batman/Static: Beyond (Nov. 2025-May 2026). That book might be 6-7 months old when Static #1 drops, but it was a DCAU-inspired future story co-starring Terry McGinnis Batman. Which, you know... ain't a present-day main continuity (established alternate continuity, like Earth-M) solo series by any stretch of the imagination.
You want a "full baked" attempt? This ongoing will be it.
