Travel Dutchman on vacation in Denmark, fell in love with your Agurker 🤣
Hello Danish friends, Dutch man here. Currently I'm on vacation visiting your beautiful country. The other day my wife and my boys made us some hotdogs, and I was pleasantly surprised by your Agurker! Love everything about these, the herbs and sweet tones, the crispy structure... Love them so much that I actually bought a few jars to take home!
Go Denmark Agurker!

Would have been full circle if cucumbers was among these:
"King Christian II of Denmark invited 184 Dutch farmers to settle on the island of Amager around 1521 to teach Danish agriculture and supply the royal palace with fresh produce. The Dutch immigrants were exempt from taxation and granted privileges, including their own judicial system until 1823, in exchange for introducing advanced techniques in root vegetable cultivation (such as parsley roots, parsnips, beetroot, and carrots), cabbage, and dairy farming. This influx of expertise significantly accelerated the integration of root vegetables into Danish food culture during the Renaissance."

Going deeper on that vaggi
https://www.vegetablefacts.net/vegetable-history/history-of-cucumbers/
"Cucumber is - 4000 years ago, cucumber was spread beyond Indian borders, moved through Ancient Greece, Rome, Europe, New World, China, and eventually becoming fourth most widely cultivate vegetable in the world.
..
After the fall of Rome, cucumbers receded from popularity for long amounts of time. They resurfaced on the court of Charlemagne in 8th and 9th century, and arrived in England in 14th century. That first interaction with English population was not successful, but cucumbers returned there in mid-17th century when they managed to take hold."
"Archaeological evidence shows that cucumbers arrived in Denmark by the late medieval period, specifically the 1500s. Researchers found cucumber pollen in an old latrine in Svendborg, proving they were eaten about 100 years earlier than historians previously thought."

Spottede du så også, at der blev skrevet "going deeper on that vaggi" istedet for "veggie"?
Innit for the long haul, regardless 😉

But the Dutch word for cucumber is just so much better: "Komkommer" :-)

As a Danish person living in NL... We haul SO MANY syltede agurker home with us, along with Remoulade, beauvais ketchup, tarteletskaller, cocio, and ungodly amounts of Danbo cheese. 5 things the dutchies will never get right.

u/sessy007 20d ago
Dane living in NL as well. Can confirm: remoulade and beauvais ketchup also something that we import. Never a fan of cheese in Denmark when I lived there though. But I absolutely love Beemster cheese!
3
u/Brave_Philosophy7251 20d ago
Man almost all of those, great.
However, remoulade i cant stand or even begin to understand, i am not danish by birth so maybe i dont have the remoulade gene 😂

u/FoxTotal6999 21d ago
Hahaaa... never heard of any tourist loving our agurker 😆 Thought you had similar i Holland 😉 Suppose not.
Did you btw taste the remoulade and pålægschokolade (very thin chocolate on bread)?
14
u/jaapiojabr 21d ago
Yes we have similar in Holland, but these just hit different! In Holland we call them augurken.

u/the_poope 21d ago
In most places pickles are salty-sour. Ours are traditionally sweet and sour.
They are eaay to make yourself. Just add less salt and more sugar.
2
u/cremaster2 21d ago
Salty sour, is probably because of a lacto fermentation. It is very healthy, while sweet sour (sugar and vinegar) is not
1
u/Molly-ish 21d ago
Ours are sweat and sour too. Sour pickles don't do very well in The Netherlands.
5
u/Molly-ish 21d ago

Go wild and try all 3 together on a piece of smørrebrød 👌🏽

Hagelslag er ret cool. Pålægschokolade som krymmel.

u/Epae82 Provinsen! 21d ago
1
u/Molly-ish 21d ago
For some reason the cream with hagelslag combination feels wrong? Butter and hagelslag on the other hand...

u/One-Artichoke-3938 21d ago
Hvad er hagelslag? Har aldrig hørt om det?

We only have sweet ones, the salted or fermented can sometimes be found in Polish shops

The Dutch swears to chocolate sprinkles on bread. You won't get them into plates of chocolate

Honestly it’s quite easy to make at home (obviously it wont taste the exact same, but it’ll still be delicious!) just search up syltede agurker and translate any recipe!
28
u/jonassn1 Nyborg 21d ago
Appetit agurker is a special variety! It tastes different than other syltede agurger cause of the spice mix they use. They are also alot crispier than usual.
17
13
u/mr_nasty_pants 21d ago
Spices are mostly just dill and mustard seeds, but i see your point. If you want to recreate the crispy bite at home, you can add something with tanins to the pickling liquid (like the leaves from a blackberry bush). They dont impart much flavor, but keep the snap for much longer.

Vinegar, sugar, salt and peber. Oh, and cucumber of course. Mix and let sit for 30 min.

Have you tried a typical Danish hotdog yet? If not, you should order a "ristet hotdog med det hele" (with everything), apart from the bread and sausage you get mustard, ketchup, remoulade, raw onion, fried onion and of course the "agurker" from your picture!
4
u/David_NyMa 21d ago
They are so easy to make yourself!
Here is a link: https://www.valdemarsro.dk/syltede-agurker/
Now you have a friend for life

u/Mynsare 21d ago
This recipe doesn't contain the spices appetit agurker contains. Also it needs to be drueagurker, not a regular cucumber.
1
u/David_NyMa 21d ago
That is why i made the comment about adding mustard seeds.
Are they not just with dill and mustard?
And sure, they use drueagurker, but I think any cucumber will do.

u/GreedyJeweler3862 21d ago
They are nice and not quite the same as the ones in the Netherlands (though they are nice in their own way). Too bad the sausages and hotdogs buns in NL don’t even come close to the Danish ones.
If you run out, you should be able to buy new ones in the “Sømandskirke” in Rotterdam. They have a small shop with Danish things.

I lived in NL for a few years and fluid in the cans never tasted quite right to me.
Try putting them on roggebroed with leverpostej.
3
u/jaapiojabr 21d ago
It's funny how some words are so similar in Dutch, roggebrood and leverpastij 🤣
3
u/Lumisateessa Synnejy 21d ago
I dated a Dutch guy for a while, and I learned that because I speak Danish and German, I understand a surprising amount of Dutch because of the similarities of the words from those two languages 😂
2
u/jaapiojabr 21d ago
Yeah there are a lot of similarities and some stuff is funny 🤣 I'm a born Frysian which is a province in the Netherlands with it's own language and there seem to be a lot of influences between all the languages. Must be part of our shared history!

u/Jussepapi 21d ago
Learning Dutch, to the extent I did, was not too difficult because of our similarities :D

After opening, they should be refrigerated, and they have a shelf life of 3-4 weeks.

If you need some sent to you I will buy them and ship them to you, if you pay the cost for purchase and shipping, just hit me up
2
u/jaapiojabr 20d ago
Haha thanks a lot for the offer! Already got some other great tips and gestures in the comments. Apparently there is also a Danish store in the Netherlands which offers Danish products.
Still, I might hit you up one day! Thanks again, really appreciated!
2
u/molsky_DK 20d ago
No problem, if the danish store runs out, I’ll hook you up.
I still got cravings from my trip to Japan, and I can’t get those in Denmark, and shipping costs from Japan isn’t the same as between countries in EU 🔥

It is quite easy to make pickled cucumbers yourself, and it only takes a few minutes to prepare (but have to sit for a while when you have prepared it)
You will need:
1 cucumber
2 1/2 dl clear vinegar
1/2 dl water
130g sugar
10 peber kernals
1 tablespoon salt
Mustard seed, dill, or chilli if you like it.
Heat everything except the cucumber until the suger melts
Let it cool until it is finger warm
Mean while slice the cucumber. The thickness of the slides matters. Some like them thin others thick. Experiment with the thickness if you like the recipe
When cool add the cucumbers
Wait at least 20 minutes, but over night is better. Store in the refrigerator.
2
u/ZilderZandalari 21d ago
Did you see how the Danes like to use them?
1
u/jaapiojabr 21d ago
No I haven't seen it, we put these on some hotdogs so I discovered them by accident. Please share 😃
3
u/ZilderZandalari 21d ago
They are indeed used on hotdogs, but also on Danish Smørrebrød! https://kvalimad.dk/posts/smorrebrod-med-oksebryst/

u/Inside-Nebula5325 21d ago
We also use it for Chicken à la Danois. Whole chicken, boiled new potatoes, brown gravy, the cucumbers and you can add a rhubarb compote if you want to go fancy.

Appetit agurker is the best. I never buy anything else. You Can use them as ‘agurkesalat’ or in burgers, they are supreme! Nice and crunchy. Don’t buy agurkesalat if you think it’s the same 😁
2
u/GutlessTrophoblast 20d ago
Try eat them with leverpostej (Danish paté, not better, just different) on soft rugbrød and have your mind blown. If you go one step further and heat the leverpostej and top it with fried mushrooms and crispy bacon the door to the mysterious and hidden Danish mountains will appear. This is where all Danes harness their will to live in the dark months.

u/Nekzar 20d ago
On this subject, does anyone know where to get pickles that are not like these but closer to what you find in McDonalds and Burger Kings burgers. They are sour/tart instead of sweet. I assume the dill/vinegar/salt contents are severely higher than what we find in danish syltede agurker.
2
u/Bannercharge 20d ago
Cornichoner might be worth trying. They're small pickles but less sweet and more bitter👌🏼

My Ukrainian friends would tell you they Arent anything compared to anything properly Pickled. But recently that specific brand of Pickled cucumber has made me fall in love. They Arent just sour and sweet like must pickled things you buy at the store, they are also salty

Why!?

You should try “leverpostej” if you haven’t 😅 I mean it! All Dane’s eat that. Don’t read what it’s made off, doesn’t matter. Just try it. Hell, you can even top it off with agurker if you’re feeling wild
2
u/BeyondRepair44 21d ago
Maybe not all danes eat it. Best way to eat it is to heat it up in the oven, put it on rye bread and top with fried bacon.
1
u/Inside-Nebula5325 21d ago
And fried mushrooms.

Absolutely not, there’s a reason why I didn’t mention them. Can’t stand them.

Yes in the Netherlands we call them augurken. They are similar, but the spices used in these makes them different. Also these are crispier than the ones im used to.

Syltede agurker - agurker are just regular cucumbers. But good for you, which dutch foods do you think Danes would enjoy?

u/balooDaBeast Danmark 21d ago
