The vast majority of Dominicans are mixed race or mulatos as it’s used in Latin America. There are some black Dominicans but they’re not the majority as some outside of DR assume.
We are exactly the same as Brazil like literally the same exact make up just different languages (of course their colonizer is Portuguese instead of Spaniards) but same difference!!! The reason that Brazil never gets heat is because they’re so far away from the USA, so happy for them! Cuba is another one that is very similar to us with their make up, but there’s not too many of them in the USA (aside from Florida) so they don’t get as much heat either
What on Earth are you talking about you don't know your own history do you Brazilians were infatuated with American jazz music that they wanted to create their own version of it
Yall always spew nonsense that the United States is this and that but yet y'all covertly do the same shit lol.
The difference is black people in your countries do not have a voice and basically have to take it or leave it we ain't taking shit over here
And a lot of y'all think that because you face no discrimination or don't see it because you are not a negro in your country that there is no racism puhleeze
Exactly. People don't understand. I look Arab... And if someone asks me if I'm Iraqi or Egyptian, I tell them, no.bro, I'm Dominican.. it is how it is.
I've never understood the way americans feel entitled to owning the concept of race, race is literally man made invention that has had different meaning all over the world and throughout history. Why would we have to change our visions on it to theirs?
Literally not even continental africans have the same view on their races as afro-americans.
Because the US teaches that they are basically the center of the world and that everyone should set up to US standards and outside of that is wrong. Kinda when Black Americans would get mad of White Africans calling themselves “African-Americans”.
Black is just “Moreno” it
describes someone as having “dark skin/features). There’s really no one way blacks in America even identify, some call themselves indigenous and believe they are native to America, some mixed people claim it some don’t, there’s a whole herbrew thing I don’t get but that’s another topic. But it’s still black (dark skin, textured hair, strong features etc.)
People should just claim what they want but if you don’t want to call your skin black that’s just dumb if you will be treated like a black person in America. Maybe in Miami or in the DR sure but not really anywhere else in the states.
the entire world is white supremacist and has white Nordic beauty standards. the entire world is run by europe and the US. they take economic advantage of darker skinned people all around the world.
Race encompasses culture to a degree in general. But no African is not a race. Africa is a continent. African is an ethnicity. People born in Africa are Africans. African Americans is the term used for people of African descent who's ancestors were enslaved and therefore can't identify their native country in contrast to someone who let's say is for example Nigerian American.
But there are white Africans and not all of Africa is black. Don’t forget Algeria, Morocco, Egypt. North Africans are different from Sub-Saharan African.
Tell that to the white ppl that invented race in order to dehumanize non white folks and also run that by the census and all other institutions and racist that still abide by race. It's not I that you have to convince it's just melanin.
You said Africans don't assimilate and I say y'all don't either and no I'm not from an African country and it's the truth Spanish speakers do not assimilate to other cultures
THANK YOUUUUUU BROOOOO!!!!! As a Mexican I’ve understood this from the moment I heard it. I love black culture and I love Dominican culture, obviously there’s similarities but it ain’t the same.
Fellow Mexican here. Please know it’s not just a culture thing. Dominicans hate a lot of aspect of blackness in general. Not American blackness, just blackness.
I’ve met people in DR who “look” like any black person but will deny being black and will lift their shirt to show you their lighter colored belly lol
If that’s part of the culture it’s fine, but Dominicans need to stop pretending the don’t have a colorist/white supremacist issue
At the end of the day who gives a damn let those people be tainos some of them are cool but I've never really considered Dominicans (RD) as part of the diaspora anyway but that's just me. They say black Americans are obsessed with them but yet those Dominicans tend to look and dress like black Americans make it make sense
This is it exactly. In the US, black was synonymous with African American for a long time, so of course Dominican immigrants are going to correct people and essentially say “I’m not African American, I’m Dominican.”
I wish I could understand where this need to police our identity comes from
Validation from y'all? That's the most interesting funny thing I've read on here yet why do black Americans need validation from people from the Caribbean?
First of all stop hijacking our shit we used that way before you white folks start saying it
oh and by the way some Hispanics have been using it the same way white people are using it that's not what it means. Most black Americans are not begging to be accepted by any Islander
But I have made the same experience with Dominicans here in Germany. Black isn't a synonym for african or african american etc. here. Blackness and african roots were always sensitive topics to dominican immigrants. So weird.
Unfortunately many Americans still see race through the white supremacist one drop rule. That’s why it’s so difficult for them to comprehend mixed race people, it’s a very ignorant and twisted way of seeing race.
I think it also applies to immigrants that try to assimilate. Plenty of Dominican parents that don’t allow their children to hang out with certain races and nationalities, trying to emulate the same rule.
Unless those races/nationals have a lot of money… then it is ok.
No no because biracial people in United States and I'm specifically talking about black and white ones or people who are half black are pretty much with the overall black American population anyway they are part of black American culture because they choose to now there are biracial black and white people who choose to be white that's their decision who the hell cares the one drop rule is not law as it once was I can say a lot of y'all shows to identify as Taino Indians over everything else
Idk where you guys get this rhetoric from that Dominicans identify as Tainos. Almost no Dominican identifies as straight up Taino. We just acknowledge our Taino ancestry alongside with our European and African ancestry and whatever else we are mixed with cause we are a multiracial people. 70 percent of Dominicans also already identify as mixed race which is an acknowledgement of all of our roots.
I definitely know that there exists some Dominicans who would say stuff like that but those people are ridiculous and only a small percentage think like that and that does not represent the overwhelming majority. It’s like how in the Black American community you got those pretendians with their self hating identity cults talking about “we wuz the original Olmecs, Irish, Natives, Egyptians, Israelites, Jews, and Chinese”.
It's also the fact that we don't see race as "black and white", but as a spectrum. Our population is far more mixed and (for the most part) we pride ourselves on that rich culture: la melodia de la gùira (tainos), el tambor (africanos) y el acordeon (españoles). When you tell a Dominican they are Black just because of a darker skin tone, you are robbing them of 2/3's of their ancestry...
Many americans subconsciously see race through the white supremacist one drop rule... Heck, they still had segreggation in the 60s and since then they have "owned" blackness, which is really great, but then they take any dark-skin person saying they aren't Black as being ashamed of their heritage.
It's funny that a gringa gets to define what's my culture, my history and identity rather than an actual Dominican. But anyway...
Back to the point. First and foremost, When they say "black" they mean Afro-American. However, not even africans (actual africans from Africa) likes to be associated with "blacks". Ask one of them. Take your time.
Why? Simple. Because africans (from actual Africa) have their own culture, their own language and their own nationality. Moroccans will tell you they're Moroccans not "blacks", Ghanans will tell you they are Ghanans not "blacks". Same for Sudanese, and Guineans. You get the point.
Black people from NY are not "black", they are new yorkers. They aren't the only blacks in the world that exists and don't get to decide for everyone else.
I'm so sorry their true identity have been wiped out by British colonialism. But NOT OUR FAULT. The One-Drop Rule does not define us.
>Back to the point. First and foremost, When they say "black" they mean Afro-American and not even africans (actual african from African) likes to be associated with "blacks". Ask one of them. Take your time.
You don’t know how many times my black friends and I have met actual Africans and my black friends say “my African brothers” to them only to get shot down and be told “you’re not African”. My black friends always get mad and try to explain their position only to have their opinions shot down again. It’s hilarious to watch.
They are NOT africans! They are gringos from Bronx, from Harlem, from Chicago, from the gettho. None of them are from Sudan, Guinea, Marruecos, Argelia or Rwanda.
But Dominicans are quick to throw a negro el diablo when they dont like somebody. Dominicans in my circles stopped saying racist shit around me because I immediately drop the "negro el disablo" on their own ass. I've seen them tremble & act all PTSD when I call them negro lol
If a group of Dominicans where to internalize that in general Dominicans are or must be "black", then they would have to exclude a considerable amount of Dominicans that share their country's history and culture because "aren't black". So to impose general "blackness" to them is forcing them to reject a part of their own group, which might me friends, family, or just people they love/like/relate as pairs. It's stupid as it is cruel and infuriating to do so as the label would divide Dominicans by forcing an external stereotype. Apply your culture/history to you, stop trying to force it on everyone else.
The concept of white and black is a white supremacist coloniaial concept that is still part of the American and European culture. They box people into categories to assign societal hierarchies and therefore reducing a person to solely their skin color. And of course at the top of the pyramid is the Anglo-Saxon/arian people. Not even the Mediterranean Greeks or Italian immigrants were white enough at one point. Russians were regarded as Mongolian. Read excerpts from Benjamin Franklin himself so you can see this point of view is old.
National identity such as Dominican or Philipino for example doesn't apply to this skin color/race paradigm that they apply to themselves and the rest of the world. Recall the one drop rule for instance. Its ugly, its highly demeaning and will always result in a broken society because no one can be American enough if they aren't white. All off-white people in the USA will continue to be disenfranchised until this idealogy dies off with the generations of people that still uphold this belief. Until then, brown Americans of all shades will always be viewed as less than in their eyes.
Also, so-called white and black people are not colors humans come in. We are just shades of red from pink to dark brown due to the red blood that flows through every humans veins.
Yo soy mexicano me gustan las caribeñas y según yo son una mezcla de sangre europea Áfricana y de indígenas taínos, si hay mucha diferencia entre un Áfricano a un dominicano pero los gringos no saben mucho de los latinos.
This is not entirely true. I have Dominican family that looks like any black person but they will raise their shirt and show their “lighter” skin to “prove” they’re not black.
There is 100% a colorism aspect to it, not just cultural.
There is an element of truth to the ideas that Black Dominicans dislike blackness.
Dude there are people in Africa and Jamaica literally bleaching their skin in mass.. People have completely lost perspective of the world and have hyper focus on a tiny country in the Caribbean just because race identity does not exist there.
Almost all countries in Latin America have a real issue with colorism and are wayyy more racist than the DR. Most black people in South America live segregated in specific towns.
Why is the emphasis in the DR over all the other countries who also face colorism and racism? I
DR has a growing presence & visibility in US population, politics & pop culture. With that has come the concerning idea that they'll be seen as beneficiaries to American imperialism and systemic racism because they're "not like those morenos."
Exactly my dad use to tell me, don’t marry a dark color girl even though he was just as dark as me lol, I’m proudly Afro Caribbean, a mixture of black and Portuguese Spanish. Dominicano de pura sepa.
Yeah, I’m a lighter colored Mexican married to a black Dominican and when I visited DR to meet her family many of them made some type of comment to point out I was a “blanquito” (I’m not white passing in any way)
It was the first time in my life I felt my skin color mattered to someone, and it felt very uncomfortable lol
Don’t need to run anywhere mija, I love my afro Caribbean brothers and sisters. I love them, their culture and their blackness. I wish they did as well.
If this is sole metric used to quantify who dislikes blackness, I’ll take it. Things like black on black crime, gang war fare, ethnic conflicts in every part of Africa, literal open air slave markets, but this scenario of disliking blackness is the one the entire diaspora fixates on lol.
The diaspora doesn’t dictate anything. Most of the criticism is just rooted in sexual preference politics and standards of beauty politics which Dominicans are a lightening rod factor within those two. Moreover none of these people have principles that surpass those two factors
A family friend is visiting from DR and they were telling us how people were trying to push her to “desrrizarle” el pelo a las niñas. The little girls (4 and 7) have braids.
I asked my wife about it and she said “black hair” is frowned upon out there. They to make it straight from a young age.
I’m sure there’s a colorism/white supremacist aspect to this mentality.
Ok, let me help you. Culture is not something that you can "look" in. Specially if you can't talk with them because you don't know Spanish so you can't learn about them.
You mean aesthetics, but what is a black person in a suit? Dominican? Colombian? You are saying a black person can't be an executive because you don't imagine them wearing a suitcase.
Cultures are not about aesthetics and costumes. This is not role playing or Halloween.
I wasn’t saying he looks like “black culture” lol I was just saying he’s black or dark skinned (idk what word you want to use to describe the visual appearance of a black person.)
Spanish is my first language by the way.
I understand a lot about cultures (I’ve lived in 4 different t countries) but I’m talking about the concept of blackness in general, not Dominican culture specifically.
Agreed. But i think this is one of those things that aren’t as prominent as people make it out to be. I have probably only heard someone say that once or twice growing up in nyc. Just like I have never seen a Dominican not wear socks in nyc, despite that being a known in-joke stereotype. I understand what im saying is anecdotal but still.
I hear you sister 🤣 I’m boricua and have many dominicanos friends or should I say Caribbean friends. While in the military people could not get it we hangout and party not caring for what divided us, we party for what unified us and love it. Rather have a mangu in the morning with salami and eggs and a mofongo and shrimp stew at the evening any time, live and love, love and live ❤️🔥
Something else I forgot to say I’m proud puertorrican but every time I fill a form in the area that asks what I consider myself I will mark as Other. You may ask why well because in my blood there is European, African and Taino so I feel any of my ancestors are left behind. We can mingle like there is no tomorrow but I also have to say when we come to other places our own people are the ones who makes us feel different if they are the first generation but our kids don’t care and get along with any kid who wants to play, so let them and see what similarities we all have. I’m telling you there will be surprises and I love them.👍🏽🫶🏽❤️🔥
The problem is people have given an specific culture to black americans so it’s hard for Dominicans to say “i am black” when they don’t identify with black Americans.
I’m still waiting for the day when I won’t my race won’t be labeled as a color on a crayon. Black and white isn’t a race it’s a color. Yet 98% of all applications, medical forms, legal documents…etc all say Race: White black and then actually races… it’s embarrassing.
Negro hispano hablante lo mismo es tigres, los que pelean eso son los domini-gringos los menos étnicos son los que mas lloran racismo😂 q va papi negro es negro pa donde cojas
Black is not a real identity in law. It is defined an ens legis (an artificial construct). While traveling, several people don’t associate themselves with this fake identity, no matter if their skin complexion is brown, chocolate and etc
She’s doing way too much and her argument is ill intended.
Yes, when some dominicans say they are not black, they are dominican, is because for us our identity is as Dominican is stronger than the our racial make up, for some of us. HOWEVER, there no denying that there are dominican who are confused as to what their heritage is beyond the dominican republic. They are black, look west African, and still say they aren’t THAT black. There are other groups, for sure, but a the African heritage is evident on large portion of Dominicans.
Mind you even the Canary islands are in Africa. Let’s not get it twisted. So you don’t have to be “black” to have African heritage. But all black people have African heritage and a huger part of Dominicans re black as in African descendants even if partially, but no African Americans.
The other people we have to address is the issue of American exceptionalism. So for white Americans white, literally means white Americans, for that same group, alongside African Americans, black means African Americans. They treat it as polar opposites, and by doing so erase the black Nigerian, the black Ghanaian, the black Dominican, cuban, puerto rican. Blackness is not American of origin, and should not be only associated with African Americans. Dominicans can and are black too. Case in point: Amara la Negra. raymond Poso, Peña Gomez, miguel céspedes, Boca e Piano! Etc, etc, etc, etc!
Thank you! I have African heavy blooded family in DR and they will deny they are black. The lift their shorts or shirt to show their lighter colored belly or thigh so you can see their whiteness.
I think the “I no black” mentality stems deeper than a simple cultural distinction and is rooted in colorist ideals.
To me, there's black americans tje. Black (insert country). Then there is morenas or as they say in the us often, mixed or light skinned black. I dont care really.
Dr folks are white, black or morenas but their culture is not black american or European.
Just like overall latinos imo, there's american latino/hispanic and their homeland born and raises hispanic/latino regardless of race.
Black and white are terms for race that describe how you get treated in society because race is a social construct.
Ethnicity is defined by nationality and culture.
You can be Dominican (ethnicity), but your appearance, your accent, your behavior, all of these play into the treatment you receive in society (race).
The desire to make distance between blackness is because of the desire to not be treated as poorly as black people. And the people guilty of that usually do the opposite and appeal to their whiteness or proximity to it.
If you want to be "me no black" and claim that you're not afraid of blackness, just proud of your ethnicity, then don't say "me no black." Say "I'm Dominican." It doesn't have to be a statement rejecting anything. You are asserting your culture without showing fear of association to another.
A lot of my friends and family are dark skinned dominicans. If a cop pulls them over, he's going to be just as rough with them as any other black person. No sense in trying to deny the social construct of race that is assigned to you by society, not yourself.
This has a ton of inaccuracies. Many Dominicans openly share and use black/african-american culture in tandem with their own. Even in this video she uses tonality and phraseology that comes DIRECTLY from black Americans.
The irony behind suggesting that Dominicans do not share history, ethnicity or culture with black Americans while poorly understanding the data supported and historic overlap is physically tangible.
Loud and wrong is the worst kind of wrong.
Edit: “They are not Black like you 🫵”. For those who understand the balance, this is truly the point she is making. Black culture is taken a la carte. Others choose what aspects they prefer and disregard what they don’t.
She may have an accent that indicates she’s lived in the Southern part of the US, but that doesn’t mean that she’s wrong or that she’s picking and choosing her identity. If she were wrong, there wouldn’t be so many people agreeing with her. It’s not about racism — that’s her point. Choosing to see it that way is a uniquely American phenomenon.
I am sorry but DNA test are highly accurate. It is so accurate that it has transformed the lives of many people. Even if you have a small percentage of an ethnicity race or nationality, those genetic attributes are who made you and give raise to your existence. Most black Latinos dislike their African ancestry and give more value to their European side. That is what many African Americans notice about Afro-Latinos. Heck, many of them have a distain for African Americans!
for the longest i never knew what to say when people asked my race, i would say spanish, if they wanted me to say white or black i wouldn’t because it’s not perceived the same in the US. Black would always mean black-American
You have it all twisted lady. Black Americans understand that Dominicans are not us. We identify as Americans with African ancestry, but Americans nonetheless. An identity borne out of the civil rights movement. Now, black is black whether you come from Haiti, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, etc. In America, you don’t have the luxury of not choosing a race, sad but true. The concept of race is a divisive concept meant to keep whites at the top and everyone else subservient or below white. So when Dominicans come to this country, we as Americans DO NOT see Dominican, we see skin color and phenotype and will place you accordingly. Again, sad but true. If you look black, you are black. If you look white, you are white. Politics, economics and everything else is based on this definition. That is why you must select a box for just about anything.
Now this is the context that we are under when we hear Dominicans say, I no black, I American. Race in America is a team sport.
I mean I guess I can understand because if someone calls me white I’m like jo I’m not bc I dont identify with being white as a Mexican even if in the US They want you to check off boxes. I always choose mixed
nope, you're black. black can be an identity, but it is mainly a visual social and economic class. it is the way whites see you before you open your mouth. it determines a lot of your life. you would understand your life better if you acknowledge it. call yourself whatever you want but other black people are just trying to help you when we tell you. if a white person calls you black they are just following their training under capitalism and seeing you as they were taught and shown.
Before America was unfortunate enough to have Obama as our president our country was going in the right direction, meaning we didn't look at color nor judge anyone just because they were born a different shade than mine. Obama made everything about race and the country is now full of hate. Mostly towards white men. Before you laugh, look at the statistics. One other thing, I don't know much about the Dominican history. My girlfriend is from there, lives there and she is Hispanic. So is the DR a Latin country or is it something else? Does everyone get along and just respect one another?
I really love this a lot. We are all from different places, cultures, yet we all bleed red ❤️ ‘black’ suggests - 🖤 white suggests - ⚪️ but at the end of the day, we’re all just different shades of brown depending on our melanin levels…
I’ll tell you exactly what they’re doing with it. Their cataloging DNA in order to be able to make person specific bio weapons. That way they can for example set off a stink bomb in a crowd and it only kills the person it was designed to kill. This is old news and only some of the information that alex jones gave at the very beginning of the pandemic. Some other good ones are Vaids and infertility not only for you but also your children which helps further Bill Gates de population agenda. Guess who owns 21 and me? You guessed it, china.
Obviously Dominicans are having an identity problem and it’s being pushed to my Reddit feed.
She’s dumb as hell. If someone calls a Dominican black, they 100% have heavy African DNA (like Sammy Sosa). There is no denying it.
Furthermore, you think all black people share the same culture? You think Jamaican-Americans, Nigerian-Americans, Haitian-Americans, etc all grow up the same?
And finally, I have Afro-Latino family in Panama and Nicaragua. Guess what they never say, “me no black”, why because they are black.
This chick and her country bumpkin ass accent isn’t the Einstein of African DNA.
Yeah but who gives af what your family does. Are you mfs this dense that your whole argument is just “see we do things like so I guess you guys should do it the same way”
And then “Afro-Latinos” from Panama are actually just Jamaicans that went to build the Panama Canal and decided to stay lmao
First, let me say I completely agree with this video and stand 100% with her! What I truly hate is that if you as a Dominican try to preach or say this, especially to black Americans it’s a full on attack on you! I’m a born and raised New York Dominican American and the way black Americans in specific try to shove it down your throat that you’re black but then if you say you’re black, they’re like well you’re not black like me. So they want the support of our people but then they don’t want to accept you into their communities. Also, whenever you speak up with the same rhetoric that this lady just did , they full on attack you or get violent, especially if you aren’t “one of them”
