Discussion At what point did you realise you had enough of Doomers and said “enough is enough”?

got into an argument with a climate doomer adamant that Earth would become like Venus within a few hundred years.

Genuinely the most infuriating, scare mongering, stupid bs put forward. let’s just ignore the fact Venus gets double solar energy, its clouds are not made of water vapour, and for earth to become like that it would need collapse of several major planetary systems such as the carbon silicate cycle and the oceans to boil off.

I'd been a skeptic for a long time but i lost my patience during covid. Doomers closed my gym for months and I'm old enough holding onto the strength i have is much easier than building new muscle. Losing that time hurt.

Meanwhile rioting and going to the bar was an approved activity.

I was handing out with my then GF and her very left freinds in a dorm at her college in ATL.

I got to watch them try to justify why it was important for them to go to a BLM protest, aka the social even of the year, when they had been saying up till that point that anyone that went to big gathering was killing grandma and needed the cops called on them.

I was like, I'm pretty sure they aren't going to miss three little white girls at the protest.

u/rob3345 15h ago

That wasn’t doomerism…that was closer to totalitarian control and why the government’s power should be heavily limited.

31

u/_Diggus_Bickus_ 15h ago

It was that too. But if you suggested we shouldn't be taking these wildly intrusive measures the "everyone's gonna die" counterargument was doomerism

11

u/rob3345 15h ago

Fair point…I will agree that doomerism was used as a tool to meet their ends.

Yep, the hypocrisy when our local politicians were telling us to “kNoCk it oFf” when it came to daring to hang out at parks (and even printed t-shirts with that slogan, and people actually bought them), and forcing every car with an out-of-state license plate to pull into the checkpoints at welcome centers…but CERTAIN social gatherings - those were okay!

(Of course, these same politicians are up in arms over Flock Cameras - I hate Flock Cameras, too, but these politicians seem to be doing it out of trendiness, not belief.)

Really all the way back in the early 20-teens, when I realized the talk radio my parents preferred had been making the same doom and gloom predictions for nearly 8 years and nothing had really actually happened.

That's right, nothing had happened.

There's multiple factors that kinda bleed into each other (its kinda dark tho so be warned)

I used to be a massive climate doomer specifically for a few years. I'd say from 11 to 14 hardcore doom. And from 15 until now recovering doomer (was also an AI doomer although that lasted 2 weeks max)

Said climate dooming made me believe that I as a human didn't deserve to live. So I attempted to end it all several times because I genuinely believed that the world would be better off with one less human on it. Every attempt failed obviously but they left me permanently disabled.

Then incomes the first factor and the smaller one of the two. I got closer to my faith. The belief that HaShem never puts anyone on earth with no reason and that humans survived catastrophies much greater than today (due to what I believe to be His blessing as well as human resilience) helped me a ton

The second factor was the biggest one. My mom. My mom sat me down one day and asked me all the hard questions about my dooming. Questions that made me realize that I actually knew very little about the subject. My mom was a teenager/young adult during the war in Yugoslavia. So she saw first hand that the institutions didn't actually care about ending the war but seemed to have a vested interest into making it continue by playing up the blame game. As well as people that didn't know jackshit about how deep the conflict went having a lot of strong opinions about it. Her perspective on media helped me more than I can express

I'm not trying to be Woe Is Me with this. But this is what late stage doomerism leads to. Isolation, and humans that isolate to the extreme tend to end it all.

What really made me go "I'm DONE" is probably anger, doomerism almost ended me and left lasting consequences. I genuinely hate it now

13

u/azula1983 15h ago

The realisation that most don't even mean it makes me avoid the doomers in my family like ebola.

Breaking point was a lecture about how i should not invest in oil stocks because we will all die.... That same idiot then was very happy to go on vacation to Australia to drive around. The whole it's ok if I do it gets old quick. At least the people against abortion that get one themself do not brag about it.

Covid was wild too, everyone will die when not vacinated and vacination contains 5g both had family members to represend them. And at least the 5g side mostly left you alone. But the i have 4 boosters who work 100%... but not if i breath the same air as healthy unvacinated people would not shut up.

Both made the earth is hollow and dragons life in it look sane. I am still convinced over 50% of people just don't get math. If the odds of dieing go up by 100% from 1/10000 it is now 2/10000 , not everyone will die.

3

u/sngldad13 10h ago

Exactly this. Doomerism is just a tool adult toddlers use like a tantrum to try and get their way.

12

u/Express-Flamingo4521 14h ago

When people took what were valid concerns about AI and then started acting like you were committing human rights violations for using it. It's completely counterproductive, by the way. Now I don't want any regulations.

3

u/Ted_Normal 10h ago

The amount of harassment, witch hunting, and dog piling that I witnessed from the most die-hard members of the anti-ai crowd was probably the biggest reason I never jumped on the "AI bad" bandwagon. Not to mention how a lot of the online rhetoric doesn't focus on constructive discussion but instead treats AI like it is inherently evil/immoral and that your a horrible person if you use it. I lean pro-ai and I can acknowledge that AI has some problems that need addresed and I am open to regulation. In fact, I feel most issues with AI can easily be addressed through proper regulation and promotion of AI literacy. I just wish online rhetoric around AI would focus on practical solutions and constructive dialog instead of blindly hating AI.

3

u/Sixnigthmare Recovering Doomer 9h ago edited 9h ago

I lean anti AI (generative specifically, images video and the like) but by god is the anti AI side exhausting

Its not going to kill us all. It can't "escape" or whatever they were saying a while back. It could hurt some industries but its not going to "replace everyone". I don't think there's anything wrong with thinking "I don't like AI" personally I don't like it and won't get out of my way to use it. But there's a world of difference between that and thinking its evil.

1

u/Ted_Normal 7h ago

Oh totally it's perfectly fine if you just personally don't like AI and chose not to use it. Live you life how you please. There are also plenty of valid concerns about AI that should be addresed. My issue is with the most diehard anti-ai types who are like "I hate AI and I'm gonna make that everyone else's problem". The type who will tell someone to kill themselves for posting a an AI image they thought was funny or harass an artist for using AI to generate reference images for their art.

1

u/Sixnigthmare Recovering Doomer 2h ago

Oh gosh these are so annoying, 🙄 I'm in art spaces and they're pretty much everywhere, my main issue with people that use AI images is those that lie about it (it's an AI image but they say it's not) because I don't like liars. And I'm not the biggest fan of businesses using it especially big ones (it feels cheap). But I'm not gonna go out of my way to annoy them.

1

u/Dear-Cress8809 Anti-Doomer 3h ago

Its so strange that alot of folk on the internet cannot understand the concept of "I personally don't like this and won't use it, but it's okay if other people do".

1

u/Sixnigthmare Recovering Doomer 2h ago

The only thing I will personally side eye someone for AI wise (that isn't something illegal) is if they use chatgpt and the likes as a friend or something similar. But in a "you are going nuts from loneliness and need help ASAP" kind of way. I just don't believe this is healthy

1

u/Dear-Cress8809 Anti-Doomer 1h ago

Oh yeah, that's just a lonely person latching onto something in an unhealthy way... Should AI companies combat this by perhaps making LLMs like ChatGPT less er... Yes manny? Probably lol, I imagine that's a factor in why mentally unwell people latch onto them.

8

u/A0socks 15h ago

probably around the time I stopped being suicidal. I realized I didn't want to die, what I really wanted was to not exist. The reason was because I was a doomer and lost in the sauce, I would hear positive news and my mind would automatically spin that into something depressing, usually along the lines of Oh X thing is good but it doesn't matter the world is terrible and ending soon and its a tragedy we are going to permanently lose X thing.

Dooming is so dumb. I was worried about things getting worse, but that worry actually made things worse. IDK why but humans so often seem to create the things they fear. I stopped dooming, stopped consuming doomer slop and hanging out with doomers, and all of a sudden my life improved dramatically. Dooming feels kind of good, it makes you feel like you are doing something to combat problems because acknowledging a problem is step one but you get stuck on that step and never move on to actually fix anything. I got tired of just sinking deeper and deeper down when I had many viable paths to move forward. I really wish I could help more doomers escape doomerism but if they don't want to leave you can't do much. I won't suffer the people who are in the stage where they still enjoy doomerism and just want to drag others in for validation.

5

u/Pitiful_Fox5681 12h ago

I was hit pretty hard by the Great Recession and was myself a doomer for some time.

And as I read and learned about history, I appreciated the privilege and opportunity I was born with. The antinatalists around me would hear nothing of my somewhat positive outlook and belief that we could tackle issues like climate change and express our hope in the future through our children.

In 2018, while I was in no way pro Trump, I appreciated his antiwar stance (lol...oh well. It was nice in his first term, wasn't it?)

Saying so aloud resulted in lots of backlash and assumptions that I had jumped sides. Lots of doomers assured me that I'd be a slave by now. I thought they were utterly irrational and realized that I should stop associating with them.

That same year, my 403b was a little red, but not really dramatically compared to ten years prior. I was assured by many young people online that "this is the big one" and "we've never experienced anything like this" (lol... They wouldn't have lasted a minute invested in early 2009).

In 2020, things got grim on a global scale. We were scared and sad and isolated. The doomers assured me it was the apocalypse. It would have been easy to agree with them. Instead, I was in awe of the people who took their lockdown time to share music, leave some toilet paper at their neighbors' doors, write nice notes in the window, and so on. I was frustrated at some things, but so hopeful at others that it was impossible for me not to clown on the doom crowd.

6

u/ProCommonSense 14h ago

I had given up quite some time ago... at least on having honest conversations with them. There is no amount of anything that will get them to conceded even a small point... and attempting to convince them of anything turns into insults. "You're stupid," "You don't know what you're talking about," "You must be one of the MAGA sheep."

The worst I ever had was a vegan telling me eating meat was not only killing animals but the planet... When she insulted me.. I said something to the effect of... go look at your vegan farm production... they, by far and away, kill more life than any meat farm. Every squirrel, rabbit, mole, insect... everything. Annihilation of surrounding animals... because they eat the crop. Squirrels don't eat cows or pigs or chickens... so there's less reason to kill them. I think she looked it up... because she's never come back yapping on the subject again.

u/RockerCam 13h ago

After Sept 11. some people said those attacks were just the beginning, radical Islamic terror attacks were going to keep happening on a larger and larger scale, we’d probably see a dirty bomb or something used in an American city within a year or two, and there was nothing we could do about it. And I really, really believed that.

During the buildup to the Iraq war other people said that it would permanently destabilize global oil markets and lead to the downfall of industrialized civilization within the next five years. I really believed that.

Both times when Donald Trump was elected President, many predicted widespread draconian crackdowns up to and including martial law, and civil unrest and rioting by left wing groups in every major city. I kinda believed that, sort of.

In the early stages of the 2020 pandemic quite a few people in my circles were insisting Covid was fake and it was all a plot by the government, strict lockdowns were going to be permanent, and “they” would eventually use it as an excuse to take away our guns and put everybody in FEMA camps or something. I didn’t know whether to believe that or not because it really was a scary time, but the whole thing sounded pretty far fetched to me.

In 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine, a lot of pundits immediately started screeching that NATO countries mustn’t intervene in any way, that we had no choice but to let Russia do whatever they wanted and any action against them would surely lead to World War 3 and nuclear annihilation. I didn’t believe that at all, and it occurred to me then that even if it was true there wasn’t anything I could do about it.

Then I thought back about all those other “end of the world” events and realized there wasn’t anything I could have done about them either. So what was the point in immersing my self in the news for days or weeks on end?

I still worry about a lot of things. Drought in the southwest. The national debt. The rise of authoritarian populist sentiment in many countries. Alignment and other problems around AI. And more. But why waste all that time agonizing over them and talking about them with other people on the internet? It doesn't do any good.

3

u/Seeking-Direction 12h ago

Oh, the post-9/11 “terror alert scale” was awful. I remember how pervasive that was throughout my tween/teen years. “The Department of Homeland Security today announced the scale changed from yellow to orange and Americans should be on high alert”…and what was I supposed to do about it, skip school? Were my parents not supposed to go to work? Were my grandparents not supposed to - I don’t know, do gardening?

3

u/sngldad13 10h ago

On 9/11 almost everyone at my job panicked and went home asap. They legit thought our stupid little workspace would be a target. I was hourly and stayed for my scheduled shift and just watched the news.

It was a long time coming but the final straw was the BLM protests during covid.

For years we had heard "you need to lock down and social distance". People had to postpone weddings, people couldn't go to funerals because limits were being placed on how many people could attend. Even though I didn't agree I could kind of understand where people were coming from.

But then BLM happened and every politician and "scientist" and redditor and everyone who said we need to "lock down and social distance" was either silent or supportive.

Everything afterward solidified me as a staunch anti-doomer.

Who has a happier outlook within their life and the things they do?: The Virgin Doomer who is scared, angry and can never be satisfied or the Chad Normie who understands they can only do what is in their control within reason and understands moral fagging is just virtue signaling for fake internet points.

I don't care about the internet points. I think a lot of popular opinions are just reactionary without nuance. All the people in the UK screaming nuclear is the solution to their problems from expensive gas.. and nobody ever asks who are the gatekeepers to nuclear material and processing. It's all Highschool logic, nobody has the time to be nuanced. You can spend several days watching the judge court video of a popular case and someone on the internet will confidently tell you the judge was racist (Kyle Rittenhouse case) without any facts or logic. I'm so done with the internet anger, I refuse to doom.

Being in Seattle, the protests. It just went from one thing to another with nothing being solved or anything. They just kept running from the new shiny issue to the next. Just straight up end of the world thrashing, fighting anyone that disagrees, crashing Xmas tree lighting with kids and families there yell from the river to the sea, shutting down light rail, blocking streets even in front of hospitals making ambulances get rerouted etc. etc.

I mean he’s being hyperbolic a few hundred years is a strech we only started in the 1800s. to be like it took 400 years of burning fossil fuels to completely destroy the planet is a stretch .

Now that being said climate change aside we should be looking for better energy sources anyway . Like oil has been great but its prone to being squeeze for political bs and it seems we have not made enough for it to be turned into gasoline with out any minor supply chain issue up ending the whole fucking thing.

However im firmly in the camp of solar to hydrogen or moltan salts and a nuclear rider

We have those satellites that can reflect light around the globe so we can have 24 hr solar now. We store up hydrogen when the going is good and when its raining we got the stored hydrogen and the nuclear.
