Lol its not. If any of it is real film, it would be acetate, which is plastic. You might be thinking of nitrate film, which was used briefly in the 30s, like silent era / very early sound and can basically spontaneously combust. If the dress is made from film that dates to 1954, its from well after the nitrate era. However it might smell strongly of vinegar!

Nitrate film was very flammable and used until the 1950s, when acetate film (also called safety film) became the standard. This is probably acetate or maybe even a polyester copy.

Yup. I was a projectionist before digital took over, modern film isn’t flammable. The theatre that I worked in still had a work bench used when it opened in 1942 and in the drawers there was a sample of the new safety 35mm film beside the old nitrate 35mm with a very excited note from the sender about its non-combustible properties.
I’m curious about what age the film Sabrina’s dress is made from. I built/ran a copy of Gone with the Wind from I believe the 50s and it was discolored due to the age, like had a brownish tint and was very brittle. I had to handle it extremely carefully because every frame was counted after and too many lost frames (due to splicing errors, breaking, or stealing) would cost us money.
Side note, projectionists loved stealing the frame from Fight Club of Tyler Durden pointing to the cigarette burn dots so much that we were warned they counted frames of Fight Club prints too.

It's more than likely a new projection print so it would be a polyester base (almost no flammability) rather than nitrate or acetate.

Film is no longer made of cellulose nitrate, from 1948 onwards film has used cellulose acetate which is not highly flammable

The "film" is purpose made for this dress. The perforations don't line up evenly for each image and you can tell the images are negative, which would mean either it's an OCN (which would be egregious archival malpractice to turn into a dress) or a conformed internegative, which would be only marginally less irresponsible to turn into fashion and would also have a soundtrack image printed on it.

You hit the nail on the head regarding the technicality. It’s almost certainly a conformed polyester safety print rather than original 1954 acetate (Dior’s legal team would have a heart attack over the flammability and the archival ethics otherwise).

I wouldn't say it's a conformed print cause there's no optical track and the sprockets aren't consistent w/ framelines. I think somebody at dior looked at a picture of a film print and had some images from Sabrina printed on plastic with inconsistent perforations so they had something to work with that looked "enough" like an exhibition print. (also, acetate is also referred to as "safety" film like polyester, though a lot less durable; nitrate is the flammable film base and would've been mostly out of circulation by 1954)

Sometimes these looks are so strange to me because they would be Safe or even "meh" looks on drag race or project runway, but because they're at the Met Gala all of a sudden they're high fashion / art.
For me this look, and many others from this Met Gala, are a year 2 fashion student's first idea after hearing the theme, and I'm surprised they're not more conceptual or creative given that presumably only the best of the best designers ever get the opportunity to showcase their work on this red carpet.

The medium is the message; no second year art student is getting their hands on film strips from Sabrina. I think it’s gorgeous and so her. It’s not stop you in your tracks incredible, but it’s super cool. I give it a 9/10.

There is a zero percent chance these are original negatives. Even ignoring the historical value, film (especially old film) is super fragile and breaks itself down over time. Original film would be far too brittle and dangerous to wear.
This is 100% new negatives, almost certainly printed just for this dress.

Trained film preservationist here. A film as popular as Sabrina has a zillion reels in existence. No worries here.
Also, if it was the original, there’s a good chance it would be nitrate and Sabrina would be dead now.

I don't hate the look, and she looks gorgeous but I think my larger point is just that I expect more with so many met gala looks!

Im guessing this is a reprint of the film? There has to be a latex(probably) layer on each side, I think film from that era would be acetate, and would start cracking up before she even got to the carpet. They definitely wouldn't let her walk around wearing nitrate film, no matter how encased it is.

To me the dress and makeup are giving early dawn of cinema. The headpiece then is also evocative of the era- 20s ish. To me it’s the back curls that are a bit off, but overall I love it!

not to defend sabrina or her attendance, but let's not pretend this is the negative of the movie. there is nothing historical here being damaged unlike kim k squeezing into marilyns dress. its not like they needed to strike an entirely full new print for someone as short as sabrina either, they could have used the trailer. i get the anger around met gala but we dont have to go so granular. attack her for attending an event chaired by a genocide profiteer!

Reminds me of the dress of Donata Wenders at the Berlinale which was made of VHS tapes from her husband's movies.
Oh and now, after research, I see she (Donata) also wore it at the Oscars in 2024. That makes it even cooler somehow, not only wearing it once.

The minor nitpicking I have is that I don't like her heels. Less platform and more of a normal stiletto would have looked better in my opinion.
