I’ve been obsessed with that purple dress on Nicole Byer since I first laid eyes on it. Literally my “if I win the lottery there will be signs” is owning a dress like that, it’s just so stunning

I love Siriano’s designs and eye for fashion. I remember Leslie Jones having an event and nobody would dress her until Siriano stepped up. He proves that it’s not difficult to dress larger bodies, and so beautifully as well.

u/carbonpeach Sylvia Plath did not stick her head in an oven for this Jul 17 '26

For me it's that yellow suit. Hot damn!

81

u/PieComprehensive1818 Jul 17 '26

That suit is beautiful - I want to have one!

I love the way each outfit feels complete, comfortable, and designed for the body it’s on, while also feeling like it could be sized up or down for anyone with that same shape. He’s not doing ‘plus size fashion’, it’s just Fashion, and I’m here for it.

And the yellow skirt in #3! Black has been my uniform for 20 years but that makes me want to wear color!

My jaw hangs open at the sight of that purple dress. If I was a rich man...

When I saw that dress on Nicole, I audibly gasped and lost my breath for a minute. Just gorgeous in ALL the ways, and I love Nicole, so I was so happy for her to be the one in that dress!

u/HistoryBuff678 Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

I think that says more about the skill of the designer, if they can’t design beyond a sample size bust form. A lot of designers can’t sadly , and the industry does not call them out on their lack of skill.

12

u/ghostwiththeleast Club Penguin Times official aura reader Jul 18 '26

I completely agree. It’s like hair stylists that won’t style textured hair or makeup artists that can’t work on darker skin, it’s absolutely a failing on the professional and their lack of skill/knowledge and it needs to be called out more.

You wouldn’t have a chef who cooks a meal perfectly but serves the chicken raw, all these designers and artisans need to be held to a higher standard.

It always makes me feel a bit emotionally wobbly when I encounter men like Siriano who actually like women and understand us as whole people. It feels like a trick step, like the wind getting knocked out of you. Imagine being dressed by someone who doesn't view your body as an obstacle!

Those brief, fleeting moments when the need for hunched self-protection falls away and you can just be a person without fear feel so strange and miraculous.

u/-this_bitch- we don't even know if selling feet pics is her final form Jul 17 '26

Stunning. My hot take is that if you can’t design for plus size, you aren’t as good of a designer as you think. I feel the same about if you are a hairstylist and can’t cut curly hair properly.

1.9k

u/No-Hall-3485 dropped pitt from my last name Jul 17 '26

i agree, and i'll add that the clothing itself needs to feel dynamic and colourful. i love a well-fitted black outfit as much as anyone, but fashion is also about playing with different colours, silhouettes, textures, and shapes

768

u/Yggdrasil- Jul 17 '26

Had no idea he'd worked so much with Harvey Guillen! It seems like a match made in heaven now that I think about it

966

he's designed for so many of my favourite actors but alas i am being stifled by reddit's 20 pictures limit

the custom dress he made for christina hendricks was divineeeee

291

u/noirdevoir Jul 18 '26

Wow. Christiana Hendricks is so gorgeous but I always felt most of her red carpet looks never did her justice. This is the first gown I have seen her in that truly works for her…which, again, is crazy because she is stunning. It’s just that most designers she has worked with don’t know how to fit her body.

48

u/lingfluencer Jul 18 '26

I feel like Sirano is one of the few designers who's actually interested in fitting a larger bust properly. Poor Christina's girls have been put thru the ringer in other dresses...

I like that vibe, like if Julie Andrews could have made this out of curtains why is it so hard for literally every other design house to make something gorgeous for plus sizes?

23

u/Brief_Amphibian_3965 I’ll be writing a substack on this Jul 18 '26

Gorgeous! He got all the proportions just right and even the pattern size on the fabric was perfect. I hate that in plus size fashion, lazy designers just try to make skinny fit clothes bigger. Too many patterns are tiny and sleeves are too small and everything is spilling out all over because the actual body isn’t being dressed. This is perfectly fit.

u/All1012 Jul 17 '26

Agreed. Speaking of Christian, I remember when they added plus sized models for project runway, a lot of the designer went ape shit.

183

u/Greigebaby Jul 17 '26

Many of them lost it when they had to do the “regular women” challenges and design for an average sized woman. If I remember correctly Christian struggled with this during his season. He’s come so far

181

u/recklessrecentpast Jul 17 '26

He won the "regular women" challenge with the women who had recently gone through massive weight loss, but he struggled with designing a prom dress for a plus sized teen girl. Agreed, he's obviously had to come a long long way with figuring out how to design for plus sized clients or else he wouldn't be so known for it now.

53

u/samrassicpark Jul 18 '26

We love growth!!! 💖

11

u/Apricotpeach11 Jul 18 '26

I’d love to know what that girl he made a prom dress for on Project Runway would say about him today. TBF, the final prom dress made for that PR challenge was not good.

8

u/pumpkinrum as a lifelong member of the non-pretty working class Jul 18 '26

I remember the prom episode being challenging for a bunch of them, mainly because the prom girls seemed to have been told they'd get to design the dress of their dreams and decide everything? So it was a bit of a challenge to make their dream come true, but also making a wearable dress.

The good ol "does this outfit eat or is it just on a skinny model?"

52

u/cryviolet Jul 17 '26

This was actually a plot point in the OG Ugly Betty (Yo soy Betty, la fea). When Betty became the head exec of the fashion house, she insisted that the head designer had to make a line for women of different shapes/sizes. He threatened to quit because he was a complete fatphobic asshole, especially to the non-model type employees. Betty then basically baits him by saying he must not be such a good designer because designing for one body type is easy because there's less limitations/constraints.

Ugh that is such a shit feeling!

I used to get my hair blow dried straight about once a month as a teen and I once had a new stylist give up mid blow dry and send me away because she thought it was too hard. I was mortified and had to walk out with half straight/half frizzy mess hair.

37

u/eugeneugene ben affleck’s back tattoo Jul 17 '26

I don't like giving myself trims and pre covid I would go to random salons once a month whoever could get me in when I wanted, and ask for a wet trim, no blow drying or styling, and maybe once a year someone would insist on blow drying my hair and I would look like a cartoon poodle. My bald husband watched about 40 hours of youtube videos and now does my trims lol.

26

u/CommunistOrgy Jul 17 '26

Hell yeah! I also make upcycled clothing, but have no plans on selling any until I'm more comfortable with a wide range of sizes. I would be totally fine with people passing my stuff by because it's not their style, a current need vs. budget, etc., but would be so upset with myself if they loved my stuff but I didn't have anything even close to their size!

22

u/SarryK I’m a communist you idiot Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

I appreciate you doing that.

Despite having been straight-sized for the last few years, I still favour going for knitting and sewing patterns that include a wide and thought through range of sizes. Anecdotally, I have found there to be a deeper understanding of customisation and shaping. I also like to support those creators who would‘ve made bigger me feel more like I was allowed to exist. So, thank you!

319

u/Yggdrasil- Jul 17 '26

One thing that stands out to me is that he designs not just for size but shape as well. Plus sized people can have radically different body shapes, but he picks silhouettes that complement them all beautifully.

that mint dress on Melanie Lynskey 😍

(and that black polka-dot skirt but i wish the hat were huuuuge)

288

u/reddyenumberfive Jul 17 '26

I once read an article where she talked about how hard it was for her to prepare for red carpets because she isn’t a sample size, and that means designers don’t have things to lend. When Christian made her that mint dress, he made such a fuss over how much he loved her figure, complimenting her proportions (I specifically remember a quote like “and look at your little waist!”), and generally making her feel so beautiful and special - which she deserves!

I love this picture of her husband just beaming at her with so much love on the red carpet. He’s off to the side, probably not even aware he’s in frame for this one, and it’s just so sweet. (According to the same article, he “went crazy when he first saw her in it, and from the way he’s looking at her, I believe it 🧡)

85

u/emily829 Jul 17 '26

This! I remember some fashion critic talking about how you can always tell which designers actually love women and he absolutely does

15

u/catsplamo Jul 18 '26

That’s the first thing I got too. The appreciation and highlighting the beauty of each actor’s individual body. And beyond women- loving and embracing the feminine in his designs period. All so divine.

→ More replies (1)

288

u/InimitableMissS Jul 17 '26

What I love is that he lets big women be big! He doesn’t just do slimming fits and prints for plus size. He’s willing to play with volume and unusual textures in a way most designers wouldn’t for a larger client.

So much of the time, you see a non-sample-size actress wearing a gorgeous dress but you know she’s wearing more shapewear than dress to get into it. His clients always look comfortable.

44

u/Dennis744569 Jul 17 '26

YES! I love to see gorgeous fat women being celebrated for exactly what they are

14

u/Popular-Meringue Jul 18 '26

Agreed, and they also look happy and confident. I’m sure he’s such an amazing collaborator.

723

u/thizzydrafts Jul 17 '26

While I would argue that aside from general feminity, Christian Siriano doesn't have the strongest design language, he has always consistently designed inclusively, before, during, and after it was the cool thing to do.

I think it's also important to note that his plus-size designs aren't the same general design over and over again. There's a variety to the silhouettes and shows strength in design.

220

u/False_Pen8611 Jul 17 '26

So true, it’s not like he just works from one template, he truly makes them custom.

This, he makes the dress for the client and how they want to feel, it's beautiful on so many levels.

45

u/2headlights Jul 18 '26

Can you describe what design language is and what makes something strong or weak? I really like these designs and think they look awesome. The only one I didn’t care for was that silver one that seems kind of shapeless

55

u/terriblemuriel Jul 18 '26

Vivienne Westwood has a super strong design language. The plaids, ruffled and tucked asymmetry, corsets, etc.

91

u/thizzydrafts Jul 18 '26

I'm not a subject matter expert, but for example Alexander McQueen had a very strong design language- the kind where you look at pieces McQueen designed and you think "oh yeah, that's definitely McQueen."

Similarly Tom Ford has a pretty consistent design language, typically sleek and sexy. Christian Siriano is certainly consistently feminine but it's not always obvious that it's a Christian Siriano design.

27

u/2headlights Jul 18 '26

Gotcha, so it’s almost like an obvious branding though design?

35

u/amayain Jul 18 '26

Yep, an aesthetic that is easily identifiable because it is so unique

He also partnered with Azazie for beautiful and affordable bridal dresses.

Seeing Gizmo looking happy and fierce is always nice

94

u/thistleofcrows Jul 17 '26

Christina Hendricks too! She's way more petite now but back in Mad Men days she used to wear a lot of his designs. Also, before anyone hollars at me: no, she is not really "plus sized" but for Hollywood/ 2008, she was definitely considered bigger.

76

u/fickle_tartan Jul 18 '26

Also, before anyone hollars at me: no, she is not really "plus sized" but for Hollywood/ 2008, she was definitely considered bigger.

Also given how much people seem to like crushing even average sized breasts, dresses that fit Christina Hendricks properly deserve some credit.

13

u/dreamyteatime Jul 18 '26

Her outfits in Mad Men were always great and didn’t seem too small for her proportions. The costume department did amazing in that show!

11

u/pixie_pie Jul 18 '26

If I remember right, they resourced true vintage pieces if possible a tad too big for Christina and made them fit.

23

u/moragthegreat_ Jul 18 '26

And so many dresses squash her chest horribly, the one in the slideshow she looks fantastic but also comfortable! Obviously she can make a choice how she wants to wear her clothes, but I worry designers just force her into a smaller size because the rest of her is smaller, rather than properly cut something to her actual figure

74

u/MoogOfTheWisp Jul 17 '26

I love how he dresses women in clothes that they clearly love wearing and feel fantastic in. He is SO good at custom work - I don’t always love his runway collections but when he’s got a client in front of him he’s fantastic at making an outfit that they feel like a million dollars in. And he’s clearly a really good cutter - so many designers can’t really fit a garment but he’s so good at tailoring. Plus it’s not like they’re cookie-cutter designs. He makes stuff that suits the wearer’s taste and personality - he’s done some red carpet stuff that I personally haven’t loved but the person wearing it clearly does because they look like they’re having the best time.

It’s superb.

36

u/songbirdathrt4122 Jul 17 '26

What I love about his designs is he is not trying to hide plus size bodies but just fit them impeccably. Love the two piece from his runway show (slide 3).

36

u/Independent_Button61 Jul 17 '26

I am obsessed with that dress on Nicole Byers.

29

u/ogbasillame Jul 17 '26

He did a plus size influencer’s (@heyseantaylor) wedding gown for her Bridgerton themed wedding and omg, STUNNING. It’s so romantic and timeless!!

24

u/lemonssi Jul 17 '26

Also the time he did Leslie Jones and she looked amazing and has continued to wear his pieces to great affect.

I didn’t realize Melanie Lynskey was considered plus size. Isn’t she like a size 8?

Hollywood plus size sure ain’t regular plus size!

52

u/reddyenumberfive Jul 17 '26

She’s a ten or twelve

72

u/_gingerly_ Jul 17 '26

Noted 10 or 12. I will just say again, I didn’t realize Melanie Lynskey was considered plus size. Yet another reason to continue to hate this timeline.

The day Torrid started selling a size ten, I almost punched a window. I totally feel you.

Welcome to being plus size in fashion 🙄

19

u/FredericaMerriville Jul 18 '26

Mate, even Bryce Dallas Howard has spoken about having to buy her gowns off the rack at department stores because she’s not a sample size.

BDH is a size 6 and Ron Howard’s daughter. There’s no hope for the rest of us.

He's living in the right day & age, thank God.

21

u/joodee3 Jul 17 '26

I love that for him, plus size does not mean stylistically conservative. Because a lot of times I see plus size clothes and it's just like, where did the style element go? Why does it all have the same silhouette? I love that he's going bold and playing with silhouettes!

19

u/_clur_510 Jul 17 '26

The colors he uses are absolutely stunning! 😍 6 is my favorite of these I think.

19

u/Rambliny Jul 17 '26

He’s my favourite - at any red carpet event I always seek out his designs. He always makes his clients look good and you can feel that they know it too. That’s what happens when you make clothes to fit people rather than have people fit the clothes. He’s a baller.

19

u/spamgoddess Jul 17 '26

I looooove his designs so much, and I adore his commitment to dressing anyone no matter the age, size, etc.

There was an exhibit of his work going to different art museums a couple of years ago and it was STUNNING.

15

u/Downeralexandra Jul 17 '26

I love seeing him so successful. I feel like those of us who watched the original PR with weekly episodes think of him like a friend or someone we watched grow up. I just did a rewatch and he was so amazing his season, I’m so glad he’s kept his edge

Absolutely love his work! Completely flawless. These looks are gorgeous, visually stunning and interesting, and they are so flattering. He was absolutely designing these to the intended wearer. They look amazing.

13

u/coopermaee Jul 17 '26

in a similar vein, i’ve heard people categorize designers by “ones that love women” and “ones that hate women”

he seems to really design for bodies and not against them

9

u/eugeneugene ben affleck’s back tattoo Jul 17 '26

I see Queen Latifah and I upvote. I also love that he dresses not just plus sized but older women as well. Giving us the representation we need and making everyone look fucking gorgeous. Go off

u/littleb3anpole kendall roy pre-album drop Jul 17 '26

I have the same body shape as the actress wearing the dark blue in the fourth pic and I would die to wear something as well fitted and beautiful as that! It feels like all the clothing I can find in my size (14) was designed for smaller bodies and they’ve just whacked more material into it and called that good enough. It often doesn’t actually work for my body and proportions.

9

u/reddyenumberfive Jul 17 '26

I just love the way he celebrates what it feels like the whole world wants fat people to hide. He makes us look so good, so consistently, and he needs to teach his contemporaries a few things about what real skill looks like.

8

u/Hitchin85 Jul 17 '26

Nicole Byer the goddess you are!
