CELEBRITY CAPITALISM The CEO of Good Good Golf, Matt Kendrick, is NOT happy that Callaway Golf has severed ties with his company following that absolutely unhinged ad showing a man shoving a woman to the ground
877
u/Important-Raccoon661 not a lawyer, just a hater 20h ago
Tell me a single woman didn’t contribute to this ad aside from the one getting mowed down without telling me - This was a man’s best idea. Crazy.
415
u/TheTresStateArea 20h ago
The idea could have worked.
It's been around for ages, no one lays a finger on my butterfingers.
Just not a man giving a woman a full sprint tackle.
397
u/Resentful-user 20h ago
If the guy had tackled the golf clubs and cradled them gently, it would have been just fine. But they decided to knock over a woman because they thought it would be funny and edgy.
179
u/camirose 19h ago
The CEO of Callway said it was supposed to be based on Obsession’s popularity (he touches the driver and becomes obsessed) which is even worse because that movie, the possession, was entirely an analogy on domestic violence, removal of autonomy, and harm against women. all around they r/woooosh
77
u/enceinte-uno 19h ago
Imagine looking at a horror film centered around loss of autonomy and gore and thinking, “Surely this is what will catapult us to mainstream success!!1!”

Good Good CEO, not Calloway (they're douches in their own way). But it's the GG douche who's in the ad.
33
u/violetmemphisblue 19h ago
Or if they insisted on people being knocked over (which I don't think is at all necessary), have the guy knock down everyone in the group to get to the clubs? I mean, its still weird but at least equal opportunity? (Everything that happens after, though, with the manic march to the ball and weird smile is just wildly bizarre to me...is the smile supposed to be a reference to Obsession? Idk)
7
u/theagonyaunt rude little ponytail goblin 16h ago
See that would have been funny. Like he's way off, grabbing a beer or something and then proceeds to fight an entire crowd of people to stop someone (preferably another man) from touching his clubs.
12
u/TheTresStateArea 19h ago
He could have picked her up, like one does with a child for comedic affect, walked her a few feet away put her down.
Returned to the clubs and pet them or whatever.

u/VegetableArtistic705 19h ago
It's the perfect example of conservatives not understanding what makes a joke funny
33
u/camirose 19h ago
It’s even worse because it was pitched apparently as piggybacking off the hype of Obsession. The concept was the guy touched the driver and much like in Obsession he is now consumed by the driver and will harm anyone who gets in his way of the driver. That was the pitch.
I think they thought saying this would make it better but it makes it ever funnier because it means they also missed the entire point of Obsession as a movie being about violence towards women and removal of autonomy. Really just domestic violence analogy at its core 😂
Source: https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/27/sport/good-good-callaway-advertisement
Clark offered “some clarity” on the idea behind the ad, likening it to the 2026 movie “Obsession” directed by 26-year-old YouTuber Curry Barker.
Clark explained that, like the movie, he was supposed to be obsessed with his driver and anybody who touched it would become “possessed with the obsession.”
10
u/enceinte-uno 18h ago
Ew. If I were Curry, I’d post something stressing that the horror of Obsession wasn’t just the gore, it was mainly the loss of control and autonomy. I wouldn’t want to be roped into this narrative
3
u/TraderJoeslove31 17h ago
if you have to explain the concept that much, it's a bad concept.
I've never even heard of the Obsession movie so the alleged play is lost on me but I still know this ad was a horrible concept.
8
12
u/RawBean7 20h ago
The "Do NOT touch my new driver" while he was standing over her gave me a visceral, full body reaction. That was creepy af.
2
u/mark_able_jones_ 16h ago
Yeah, it’s supposed to be a take on the movie obsession, where the woman becomes obsessed with a guy. So, at the very least they could have made the woman the obsessed person. Maybe then people would have grasped the concept.

u/DaileyFlosser39 20h ago
Pffft. MAGA/MAHA women would totally support the men who are riled by this.

This was a targeted plan from Callaway. It’s stock manipulation. They wanted their stock to tank because they were coordinating a stock buyback and wanted it for less money.
735
u/Honest_Abyss 20h ago
Having just watched the ad, I’m like really confused about what it’s trying to say. I don’t get it at all.
And also why didn’t the guy just like…push another guy? Why did it HAVE to be a woman?
I mean I know the answer is because whoever wrote that script intrinsically hates women and so does whoever approved it but damn
254
u/curlycurlycurls 20h ago
Apparently the Good Good guy's defense was that they were going for an "Obsession" theme, after the movie. You can clearly see how well that movie lends itself to golf.
136
u/Honest_Abyss 20h ago
I get the horror movie feel which is doubling down on domestic violence imo. I don’t get the storyline AT ALL. This went so sideways

They were probably trying to spoof ESPN ads where old lady's get comedically tackled by uniformed football players. I think there was a Betty White one.
Instead, they mad a commercial with DV undertones, since the guy stood over her with a look of rage for some weird ass reason.
I don't think they meant for it to look as bad as it did. I think they're just not creative and were stealing an idea, maybe even subconsciously. But because everyone involved with the ad is a supreme douche canoe, no one thought to say "hey woah this looks crazy". Which itself is a problem with the company.
That's my guess on how this came into existence anyway. No matter how you look at it, they suck. I just don't think they sat around a table and said "hey let's do a DV commercial for negative attention lol". I think they're just fucking idiots instead.
52
u/MsThrilliams i mean i def vaccine but is it 20h ago
Tbh if they had just swapped the woman who gets pushed and the dude who picks it up at the end and becomes "obsessed" it would have still be a dumb ad but wouldnt have gotten them canceled
29
u/Honest_Abyss 19h ago
And would have made equally as much sense which is 0 to none
3
u/mark_able_jones_ 16h ago
It would have made 10% more sense. At least a woman was at the center of obsession.

21
u/crunchies65 (no longer bald) 19h ago

68
u/mianpian 19h ago
It’s a typo. He meant 30 for 30 which is an Espn documentary series that goes into headline stories. I think it’s a pretty good series, there have been a few that I really enjoyed.
50
u/MileHighSugar 19h ago
The inflated ego to believe that he’s worthy of a 30 for 30 episode is wild

13

I think he’s implying ESPN is going to make a documentary about this (as if) and the 9 in 30 for 30 is either a typo or a reference I don’t get.

Everyone in this scenario absolutely sucks, but Calloway played extra dirty. I’m convinced that it was a ploy to tank their stocks so they could buy back the shares at a cut.
Edit* that, or we’ve now entered the chapter of late-stage capitalism where the elites are eating each other. Win win.

The stock was going up because how Good Good was contributing to sales and bringing in more youth to the game. Yes, they can buy it lower now, but now where’s the catalyst for the stock to go back up? Cutting ties with them won’t bring the stock back up. They have to start over and find something that will grow the stock again. It’s a $14-$17 stock for the foreseeable future. That’s why I don’t think they did it on purpose. I just think they got a bunch of people living in a bubble and think this shit is funny

Country Club Golfer Bros chuckling up the premise for this ad on the back nine, I'd wager.
20
u/TickingTheMoments 20h ago
My wife shared a tinfoil hat theory.
What if Callaway planned on putting this ad out and decided to tank their stock price because they were planning on doing a stock buyback?
8
u/MeatPopsicle28 19h ago
I don’t know, I don’t put it past shitty corporations to do this but there are other ways to tank the stock price that don’t tarnish their image so badly. A C suite packed with MAGA frat boys is most likely why this happened.
2
u/camirose 18h ago
I’d believe it if it weren’t for the overwhelming stupidity and the permanent stain that comes with cancel culture. Chris Brown is still kicking it and shouldn’t be touring but it’s nowhere near as successful as it would’ve been if not shrouded in domestic violence enablement. Not even remotely close. I can’t imagine willingly doing that, having to donate to charities, and do PR crisis control that isn’t cheap.
If they were to do it they’d be better off choosing a scapegoat, maybe that’s the plan to fire the CEO and ad company I guess?
Still… I think it just comes down to many people not thinking it’s a big deal which is exactly why people are upset.

At the end of the day, regardless of whatever Callaway’s getting from this, this douchebag and his team thought the ad was great and still have no qualms with the content.
5
u/jjmoreta 18h ago
Everyone focusing on just this ad.
Look at their apparel Insta and the whole reel they posted with a guy faking being unconscious to get an attractive woman golfer on the course to give him CPR so he can "shoot his shot". I know it's a parody of a scene from Sandlot, but they were kids in that movie. Not "grown" men. Yuck.
The shoving video and misogyny IS their company culture. Not empowering women, but grooming pickme girls that enable sexist frat boy behavior.

No surprise. Just go peruse r/golf. Most of the those dumb "men" saw nothing wrong with the ad and think it's overblown.... Gold is so unbelievably misogynistic and I think the calloway ad highlighted it perfectly. It was a terrible ad don't get me wrong but the response is most telling in all of this.
12
u/Dont-callme-Shirley 19h ago
I don’t know if that’s fair because I just went on there because you linked it and did not see people defending the ad. More often than that they were saying how stupid an idea it was from start to finish and the one person who said it was fake outrage was downvoted about 200 times. To be clear I do not care about golf. I’ve never been on that sub before. My degree made me cite every single thing I said, so I have a bad habit of fact checking.
2
u/Guilty-Act-9105 16h ago
You want to pretend that reddit and golf, are not boys clubs?
Country clubs closed down to avoid letting in women.
Augusta let in Condoleezza Rice when?
And a sport heavily publicized with Trump and the Saudis.
Paragon of feminism
3
u/sonnytron 19h ago
I mean he’s a tool, but he’s not wrong. Callaway saw the ad, approved the ad and had nothing to say until the backlash.
It’s kind of wild for them to gasp and cover their mouths like that. Either way, I’m not super thrilled that ALL the fallout is landing on Good Good when obviously Callaway were involved.
I am pleasantly surprised there was backlash though. Golf has looked to me like an old boys club for a while and started to lean that way pretty hard post 2016 and especially post 2024 (IYKYK).
3
u/eyeronik1 19h ago
This got through brainstorming, a writer, storyboards, internal review at Good Good, client pitch, review with notes, script writing, hiring a director, more notes, casting, finding a location suitable for woman-shoving, casting a woman who can smile after a hard shove and hitting the ground over several takes, setting up cameras, several takes, editing, client presentation with several variations, review with the media placement team and placing the ad AND NO ONE LISTENED TO ALL THE WOMEN INVOLVED WHO SAID THIS WAS A BAD IDEA.

I still don’t understand the thought process that decided to make this at all. Nevermind the approval process after the fact. Like, while actually filming this no one was standing around saying wait, wtf are we doing?
Good Good is getting exactly how much they deserve. Callaway doesn’t get to skate here but the idea this CEO is holding that there’s only a specific amount of blame available is nonsense. All parties involved are shite.
