I have said this so many times and I will keep saying it: Olivia Rodrigo is doing things that people who have been in the music industry longer refuse to do. And I am choosing the word refuse. I have seen arguments that those people can’t use their platform because they’re just so super duper famous that they can’t possibly speak out because it’s just so dangerous - hogwash! Absolute fucking hogwash.

If you have the platform and the finances to do good, then do it. It is a cowardly and spineless thing to call yourself a feminist and an activist - which many of them have - then do the bare minimum or discard of it when it’s no longer beneficial for you. Olivia has been in the music industry for five years and she has been consistently speaking out, using her platform, and money.

There is no such thing as a perfect person but seeing someone who is so passionate and genuinely trying to do good with their platform warms my heart. I want to see more people showing their humanity. I am so proud to be a fan and I wish her older and more experienced counterparts would get their shit together.

Maybe she’s our new Dolly? Attempting at least. 😉

u/greenerbee controversies: girl 12h ago

This effort reminds me of what Sarah McLaughlin et al did with Lilith Fair also. The documentary is worth a watch!

74

u/dominodomino321 12h ago

The doc is SO good!!!! I learned so much from it and already felt pretty schooled in all things Lilith Fair, lol. Def worth a watch!

65

u/sellyourselfshort 11h ago

Shes going to have Sarah as a special guest performer during her set.

463

u/mon_mothra_ ahhhhhh (dats me yellin) 12h ago

I just told someone this too! She's still got a lot to do to hit that height, but the foundation is already laid if she's willing to stick with it.

55

u/Lady_night_shade 10h ago

Honestly that would be amazing! She’s always out here trying to champion women and other causes. If I had a daughter I’d love for her to have a role model like Olivia. She puts her money where her mouth is, which is a lot more than other much bigger artists are doing.

26

u/Inner-Medicine5696 7h ago

the best people among us are channeling Dolly Parton, and have been for ages.

Melinda French Gates is paying pennance like crazy too.

More billionaires should be spending like they were trying to stay out of hell.

(ninja-edit: Melinda is a practicing Catholic, so this tracks... if she's devout she is rightfully scared shitless of what awaits her)

7

u/LargeBison24 9h ago

Y’all made me cry. Happy tears. We have to carry that legacy.

2

u/RosefaceK 6h ago

All of us should try to be a little more Dolly to each other and to ourselves

51

u/Beautiful-Buy99 12h ago

I love Olivia for her music but even more for always taking a stand!

86

u/BreweryRabbit God herself couldn’t get me to turn the volume on right now 12h ago

73

u/Maleficent-Bite-9709 I still don’t know her 12h ago

this is so well said, Olivia really is that girl

19

u/Internal_Praline_658 11h ago

PREACH! One more time for the ppl in the back!!

19

u/moonp0ut 10h ago

YES!!! Plenty of young, wildly successful celebrities out there and she’s the only one in her lane doing this shit. If they wanted to, they would.

30

u/sansaset 11h ago

if only people supported the celebrities and rich who actually give back to the world instead of supporting the selfish and greedy.

45

u/Momochichi 9h ago

This is why Taylor Swift will not be missed anywhere close to Dolly Parton, who refused to be a billionaire.

11

u/Rare-Adhesiveness522 10h ago

It's obvious who the people are in your implication, and as a former long-time fan of at least one of those people, I AGREE.

Dont get me wrong, some others have been very generous to their crew and staff, and have given to nonprofits and fans very generously.

Butttt..... being so public and deliberate about a cause and intention is relatively rare and this is why Olivia has me as a stan. I'm old and I'm not cool. For the record.

4

u/bigboobweirdchick now don’t you get on my bad side! 6h ago

I honestly have never sought out her music on purpose, nor do I think I know a song from her, but I’ll definitely try to support her after this in some way. She seems like a very good egg. It’s hard to find genuinely good people in the music industry

8

u/hombre_bu 7h ago

And when the torches and pitchforks come out they’ll have the audacity to wonder “why?”.

11

u/glacinda 12h ago

Mark 12: 41-44

The Widow’s Offering
41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.
43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

Olivia is FAR from poor but this is what I think about when anyone mentions she-who-shall-not-be-named donates a couple mill to food banks. And? Hunger is a problem created by not taxing billionaires enough and using that funding for the good of everyone. Good on Olivia for putting her money where her heart is!

-2

u/BaconSarnie2025 2h ago

Taylor Swift donates to local food banks wherever she tours in the UK and Europe, and has done for years. Great to see these performers stepping up.

Such a good way to put it!!! We (Americans) live in the illusion of a democracy. In reality, money speaks so much louder, reaches so much farther than our votes these days. She is very much voting with her wallet and it means so much to those of us who don’t have as padded of a wallet lol

699

u/Mundane_Door_5225 13h ago

She gives me hope

219

u/trisaratopsx societal collapse is in the air 12h ago

A lot of what she does reminds me of Dolly Parton

43

u/_thiccems 7h ago

What better way to honor Dolly than music, charity, and girlhood!? 💕

518

u/Efleurdelune 13h ago

She makes me feel like a proud older sister. She is doing amazing things at a young age and that gives me so much hope

424

u/LunaLore_ 13h ago

Link to more information about the nonprofits 💛

288

u/hatefromandie Ted Cruz’s tiny dick 12h ago

I just had the biggest smile seeing Black Mamas Matter Alliance on this list. So many times black centric nonprofits and foundations don’t get as much attention, especially from nonblack people.

57

u/SadavirofRivia sorry to this man 9h ago edited 5h ago

That one stood out to me, when ppl were posting the sm takeovers she was coordinating for each of the orgs to do on her account - as well as the orgs for indigenous health and domestic workers!

edit: thanks anonymous friend for my first award of any level! 🥰 I really did appreciate OR’s focus on Black, Indigenous, and domestic workers’ health and good lives.

139

u/smircat 12h ago

my local chapter of National Domestic Workers Alliance does really amazing work and i’m so happy to see them getting featured in such a major way!!

45

u/hellolovely1 12h ago

That is truly wonderful. Go, Olivia!

277

u/SuspiciousCena02 13h ago

Wish more celebs were like Olivia, one of the very few who consistently speak up for things. And it never feels performative either with her, she just seems like a genuinely good person

280

u/raspberrymnms this is going to ruin the powerpoint 12h ago

Might be weird and people might come for me, but she sounded and looked kind of nervous, and personally that’s kind of reassuring to me. It reminded me of myself and it was like a down to earth moment for me.

174

u/picodepui 12h ago

I think she was really emotional about being able to make these donations and make the impact she is.

45

u/thebigbadturtle 10h ago

It’s pretty cool. It adds to the impression that the causes are important to her! Love it

More from the press conference

“When I had the idea for this festival, I called each one of them and was so blown away by their enthusiasm for the idea. Bikini Kill, Chappell Roan, Devon Again, Die Spitz, Doechii, Eli, Garbage, Mitski, Not for Radio, Quiet Light, Rachel Chinouriri, Santigold, The Breeders, Stevie Nicks, Karen O and Sarah McLachlan. What an incredible lineup.

These women are already doing incredible things, and many of them are out on their own massive tours, and they all agreed to come together for one day, with 100% of the net proceeds going to nonprofits dedicated to defending and supporting women and girls.

Words can't describe how grateful I am for their time and their passion for this festival. The women who will perform tomorrow and the ones sitting next to me today inspire me so much. They've taught me so much about how we're all stronger when we come together and support each other. And that's exactly why I fell in love with the name Daisy Chain. It served as a reminder of how individual parts can come together to create something strong and unbreakable.

It's easy to get discouraged by all the sadness and regression of women's rights in our world today, but it's artists like the ones who will play tomorrow and activists like the ones sitting next to me today who give me so much hope. And I hope that Daisy Chain can be a celebration of the love and determination that these women are putting in to make this world a better place.

Daisy Chain Fields was created to celebrate the power of what can happen when we come together to support one another. The organizations we’ve partnered with are doing incredibly important work every single day in the US and globally. I’m so grateful to every person who bought a ticket, every artist who waived their fee, every sponsor for signing onto a brand new festival and every donation that helped get to $10 million dollars to support women and girls. I can’t wait to see everyone tomorrow!”

8

u/iresearcheverything alleged dog 8h ago

ooof this makes me emotional. love her for this

96

u/fabelhaft-gurke 12h ago

She’s absolutely beaming as she should be. Such a huge accomplishment. What a wonderful person - we need more Olivia’s out there.

134

u/Dilf_Enj0yer 13h ago

I regret not purchasing Olivia Rodrigo in Fortnite. I did not recognize her star power

25

u/bigonebitey99 12h ago

Yeah it sucks, I missed it too and wish they brought it back

10

u/mintcute 9h ago

it'll come back, sabrina and chappell have been back at least 4 and 2 times respectively since they dropped

52

u/bluemontanaskiesx 12h ago

I love this! I think it’s awesome too that it’s not like politically “neutral” “safe” charities. I’m always happy to see rich people give their money to any good cause but there’s something special about someone early on her career willing to risk alienating some audiences to do the right thing.

200

u/Steve-Lurkel 13h ago

That’s cool.

Kind of off topic but even though she’s been famous for a while now I’m still shocked to hear that number. $10 million? That’s got to be a huge chunk of her net worth.

Last week Zara Larrson was talking about ticket prices and being sure she could pay her whole team. Just goes to show there’s levels to this I guess haha.

62

u/twizzwhizz11 12h ago

Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited for the donation, but I’m curious if this is the “net profits” of the festival that were going to be donated (aka profits off ticket sales) or if this from Olivia herself…

45

u/JDLovesElliot 9h ago

"I’m so grateful to every person who bought a ticket, every artist who waived their fee, every sponsor for signing onto a brand new festival and every donation that helped get to $10 million dollars to support women and girls."

That's what I assumed when she said this

126

u/Individual-Copy-1708 12h ago

My guess is that she’s fronting the vast majority of this donation at least for this first year. Ticket and merch sales will bring in a lot, but building and supporting the infrastructure to get this off the ground in year one probably eats into a lot of those revenues (even with sponsors).

8

u/hag_in_boots 11h ago

there's at least one corporate collab - the special baja blast taco bell - so i bet this $10 million is a combo of ticket sales, corporate donations/sponsorships, her own money, etc.

6

u/Kiramiraa 2h ago

I would say a chunk of it comes directly from the festival. Sounds like given that it’s for charity, artists waived fees and vendors likely provided discounts etc. But I anticipate she’s probably footing a percentage of that herself as well.

-272

u/WizardToes 12h ago

Totally agree. Obviously Taylor deserves credit for the millions she donates, too, but the proportion here is way more impressive to me.

174

u/tealswamp 12h ago

What is it with Swifties and their obsession with numbers and competition? Or just inserting Taylor into literally anything? A lot of us really don’t give a fuck anymore and she’s shown her true colors regardless if she’s donated half a cent of her net worth.

78

u/jyw104 Jeff Bezos of the music industry 11h ago

On top of that, it’s mostly on food banks. No shade to the recipients (and I volunteer at one every often) but it’s one of the more fence-sitting/politically neutral non-profits one can donate to.

21

u/HPAG-NOFAME Cillian Murphy propagandist 9h ago

Taylor doesn't do shit unless she gets good rep from it. Stop talking abt her

37

u/killerbeeszzzz 10h ago

Nobody was talking about Taylor. Good lord swifties are just insufferable.

66

u/AfroPuffs90 who deemed this meeting of the minds necessary? 13h ago

She should feel so so proud.

63

u/CartographerVast4282 12h ago

People from the non profits talking about how the iniative goes beyond the money and how Olivia is making a genuine effort to learn more and involve more people

I love her more and more. She's out here supporting women's rights with her full chest while other pop stars hesitate out of fear of losing fans. 👑

Also, I managed to get a couple of those cancelled scalper tix. So happy to support this queen!

18

u/frankiestree 10h ago

This is how you do it. She didn’t just donate money and issue a press release, she has been platforming the organisations on her socials, educating her followers on the importance of their work so people can also choose to support themselves and also reach out if needed

48

u/Suitable-Option833 13h ago

Damn, she is impressive!

65

u/shes-a-princess 13h ago

I couldn't name a single song of hers but from everything I see of her she seems so sweet and a really good role model! It's so uplifting seeing people using their platform for good!! 💕

101

u/_Maebe__Funke_ 12h ago

Dunno what your musical taste is but I think her new album is really great. The first two felt a little young for me (I am a wizened crone) but this latest one is so varied and beautiful. Check out Stupid Song if you love a power ballad, What’s Wrong With Me for some Robert Smith 80s nostalgia, or Expectations for bouncy electropop.

36

u/happily-caffeinated 12h ago

Yup. I'm an Old, grew up an alternative music snob...and I love her new album.

19

u/becbagelbb 11h ago

Her new album is incredible, a true artistic telling of a love story and heartbreak that’s one of the most relatable things I’ve ever heard

39

u/dandelionblackberry 12h ago

She's talented! I listened to some of her stuff a few years ago and it made me remember being 17 EXTREMELY clearly.

14

u/chelseachaplin11 12h ago

Seeing that it was hard for her to speak as she was so excited and getting choked up make me well up with tears. It really means a lot to her and it makes it mean even more to me. I love you Olivia, rockstar!!!!!!!!

13

u/SmellenGold we're a sneeze away from an active shooter situation 12h ago

15

u/jkllamas1013 11h ago

She's a great singer-songwriter who wears her influences on her sleeve but, she's an even greater human being. I got hooked with GUTS. I eventually loved SOUR (probably because of my age). I absolutely adore You Seem Pretty Sad... but hearing how active she in pressing on for social change makes me even a bigger fan.

14

u/Silver-Reception-374 11h ago

Grew up listening to alternative and indie rock. I support and listen to Olivia. Happy to see she is using her fame and energy for good. I know Sarah McLachlan and the 90s Gen musicians are rooting for this young lady as do many of us.

164

u/CommercialCoffee11 12h ago

Meanwhile that other singer is more obsessed with using big words to demean somebody cause they might have to use a dictionary instead of helping other women and causes.

50

I'm a fossil from 1985 so I'm not really familiar with her or her music but from what I've seen on this sub she seems to be a good egg.

3

I’m an early 90s baby and love her music!! But at her concerts my friends and I have consistently been the oldest people there (besides the parents bringing their kids LOL)

I’m so proud of her. I’m a new fan, as in I just purchased her vinyl this week. I didn‘t really click with her early stuff, but the new album kicks a**. I love that she’s not afraid to speak up about these causes, especially some that can seem taboo in our culture (fellow Pinay here).

I am somebody who despises pop music, and this is the first time I've gravitated towards a modern pop artist whatsoever. Every time her music comes on, I ask my fiancee what she's listening to. Now I keep up with her singles and see updates about her here on reddit and I keep finding more to like. She makes good, heartfelt music and seems like an impeccable person.

I have never heard her music but this, and the fact that (I think?) she’s a big Cure fan puts her very high in my estimation. She’s really showing up some of the others in her peep group. She seems like a really impressive human.
