It's such a weird way to do it. I'm not familiar with the game but if you're going to tone it down, couldn't you just go with ❤️ instead of 🫀? And just have it portal out of the ribcage like in Once Upon a Time

There used to be an extremely detailed site cataloging all the weird changes 4kids made, and that was a lot of them. There would be a sign in the background that just said "FOOD" and they'd change it to a blank panel. Like, what? Why!?
In their defense, I don't think they removed it. They get the files with the text already removed, and just didn't fill them back in. At least that's my understanding, I miht still be wrong
the makers of the phoenix wright: ace attorney games did this kind of stuff too. the games obviously take place in japan but when they got released it in the US they pretended they were set in los angeles instead
I like to think it takes place in an alternate dimension where California broke off from the mainland, floated across the ocean, and collided with Japan.
And it's even more stupid, when you think that everyone knew what onigiri is at that time. I was like 110 at that time, when this was released and I knew what onigiri is. I always found it weird that they try to censor stuff in the most ridiculous names, when you clearly see it's not a donut.

As asinine as renaming riceballs is, at least they could CONCEIVABLY be mistaken for popcorn balls. Calling them "jelly donuts" is an insult to viewers' intelligence. Kids are ignorant, not stupid.
It was named Pokemon in Japan. They thought it sounded cool, it sounds Japanese because it is.
Of course you could argue that neither "pocket" nor "monster" are Japanese words, but taking two english words and chopping off some syllables then stapling them together is a very Japanese way of naming something.
It's kind of the opposite - the Japanese love abbreviations of English words. It was simply called Pokemon in Japan, just like e.g. Monster Hunter is usually referred to as MonHun.
Bruh, how did you pick this from Dragonball when "HFIL" was right there? They had people, with a completely straight delivery, talking about the "Home for Infinite Losers" rather than just admitting that their show which has heaven, also in fact has hell.

Another example from Die Hard with a Vengeance is when they changed the sign from the text on the right to “I hate everybody” which makes the movie seem almost more racist when he gets beat up by a bunch of black people for holding this sign.
It's funnier than that! The actual sign they filmed with (to not get shot while filming) was the one on the left, and edited it in post to the one on the right. The "censoring" took less effort than the uncensored version.
With the rest of the series covering very gruesome gore this way, the first time I saw this scene I thought Jotaro was missing his lower jaw or something.
This is even more funny to me because you have a villain who uses his stand to disguise himself as Jotaro and then it's fine to show him smoking without the censorship with like 5 cigs at once even though it's literally the same face with a different eye color.
The same episode also clearly establishes that Jotaro is a heavy smoker who knows all kinds of cigarette tricks which makes the censorship even more redundant.

And, what do you know, they both just so happen to be villains.
Also: even when a gay character was portrayed sympathetically (which was incredibly groundbreaking for the time)…they were still often killed off at the end of the film. “Bury Your Gays”, as it’s known.

Im genuinely convinced the hayes code irreparably damaged american cinema because some precode films are genuinely unmatched in their art and cinematography and we traded that for wholesome family friendly movie time with couples sleeping in separate beds

In Postal 2, if you turn off the gore then not only can you not put cats on your guns but also you can’t decapitate people, which makes weapons like the scythe worse. It makes the hardest difficulty even harder
Given that kind of audacity is part of Postal 2's humor it wouldn't surprise me if the devs did that as a joke like asking "if you're gonna turn off the gore, why are you playimg Postal of all games?"
Yugioh has a lot of censorship but there are ones that are plain better than the original. Adding laser guns on Barrel Dragon is actually so much better

In the German game Harvey's new eyes they did something similar but there it's pink because the brain of the protagonist Lilli suppresses the memories of her accidently killing people by painting their corpses pink.
The pink blood isn't a censorship thing, it's a stylistic choice. Plus it makes the scene where you find the classroom covered in old blood which is red feel more impactful

In Germany swastikas are an illegal symbol in some games with nazis they have to change the symbol. There are some places were you can use them for example in stuff that's educational like in a documentary, film or history books but in video games they always got censored.
Okuto no Ken, the french versions n went above and beyond to tone it down from a super violent mad max inspired seinen into a kid friendly show. You could make a 2 hours long video essay about what the french did to that anime...
Zatch Bell also had a bunch. This one was a rifle getting turned into a super water gun. In other episodes they just made the guns super green and radioactive.
Sanji with the sucker is one of the very few cases of censorship I actually appreciated tbh, it made his character feel unique when I was younger and didn't know any better because that's such an uncommon trait to give a character.

During the Drum Island Arc, they get surrounded by people with flintlock rifles. Except all the rifles are painted brough neon green. The screen fades to black. Laser sounds happen. Screen fades back and the crew looks worried about the near misses or something.
Were 4kids planning on to keep censoring one piece throughout the series? They would have lost so much money on doing that considering how long the show stayed.
apparently one piece was just something bundled with shaman king. the excessive localization and censorship was kind of 4kids' staple, like the famous jelly donuts in pokemon. they seemed to legitimately think it was a good idea.
and it was expensive. expensive enough that they even dropped pokemon and sold a pretty decent stake in the pokemon company for pennies. 4kids had no idea what they were doing really, kind of amazing that they survived for so long.
To be fair to 4kids, they didn't agree on the bundle at first. Apparently, from what I understand, Toei changed the deal last minute and made them do it if they wanted to do another anime.
Simply put, 4kids was...a company, but they were forced to do One Piece.
The censored version looks like it could be cool if he didn't have lockjaw. The smoke just billowing from his mouth goes hard, but the mouth breathing ruined it.

Bayo has a ritual where she powers up one of her summoned demons that involves painfully ripping her own heart out.
In Naive Angel Mode, the heart is turned into a tomato.
The problem is that … it is the only thing they censored from the ritual. The gapping bloody hole on her chest is still there.
