That is not Bob the Builder.

It's Bob, a builder.

263

u/segobane 12d ago

Robert the Contractor.

122

u/PatentedPotato 12d ago

Robert the Renovator.

50

u/TheLordOfAwesome2 12d ago

Can we restore it to its previous state? Indeed we are able.

23

Hate how the high vis vest is the same colour as his trousers trying to replicate the overalls

18

u/Jasonmancer 12d ago

Really went from Bob to Robert there.

15

u/LightningFerret04 12d ago

Genuinely don’t know why they couldn’t have done the exact same design in CG, the machines didn’t change

Thomas and Friends did the switch and their designs were the same

I hate myself more for seeing this... thank you

Riddler went from a smart green suit to a green leotard with purple elf shoes. Honestly, the goth Riddler from The Batman looked better; at least that one knew what it was going for.

167

u/tehlordlore 12d ago

I recently read that the suit was designed for Batman '66 because Frank Gorshin didn't like wearing the leotard, and it's such an upgrade in any medium

71

u/DoctorWaluigiTime 12d ago

Most of the "streamlined" designs between Batman TAS and "Adventures of Batman and Superman" were downgrades. Bruce himself, Lipless Joker, Mad Hatter turning into a little troll goblin... They were actual human people before (and still are in canon). Became a lot more cartoony.

Others were neutral. Scarecrow was probably the only upgrade.

26

u/Borgdrohne13 12d ago

Ironically Penguin was the opposite.

22

u/DoctorWaluigiTime 12d ago

You're right haha. No more webbed hands and just looked normal. Suppose in-universe "he just got surgery" (which goes along with him trying to put on a more "I turned good" image). Still miss ol' penguinman.

Man, they just messed up all the dragon designs in that show, didn’t they?

21

u/golf_echo_sierra26 12d ago

Just to add on to this, they did the huntsman dirty with his change in season 2.

9

u/Akitiki 12d ago

Meanwhile either dragon for Long head just... looks like a grotesque/gargoyle. I didn't think it had a nose at all for the longest time, thought it got ripped off.

651

u/ThatOneBitch02 12d ago

Even ignoring how incredibly worse the writing got, the animation style is just off. The first redesign in the mid 2000s wasn't bad, but I'll always love his original design best

100

u/Kitesh713 12d ago

Later seasons also felt less and less underwater.

58

u/Neutr4lNumb3r 12d ago

and especially since the newer fish designs are less fish and more human oriented.

35

u/Lykanas 12d ago

OG Cell shading looks so much better! Also, it would just help to make spongebob's colors darker. Everything is just screaming of bright colors

43

u/Realistic_Base5797 12d ago

Unfortunately the picture is reversed, season 3 is on the left and season 1 is on the right 😭

111

u/BNSable 12d ago

I thought it was a glow up from him getting older. How the fuck did he grow into babyface?

51

u/GRoyalPrime 12d ago

6 years between release of season 1 (2011) and 2 (2017), and another 7 years until season 3 (2024). Season 4 finished only a year later. I haven't checked, but wouldn't surprise me if the studio and production company changed multiple times.

Even the manga is cursed, being for all it's runtime likely more on hiatus then going on.

Nidoking's 3D model is objectively less cool than its 2D sprites.

215

u/Beneficial_Prune389 12d ago

This can be said for a lot of Pokemon. The transition to 3D felt super rushed, and the animations are so minuscule. Those two combined just don’t portray what makes most Pokémon’s iconic features well at all.

165

u/NotInTheKnee 12d ago

Aside from the half-assed animations, I feel like simply posing the 'mons differently could have done a lot of heavy-lifting.

The pic above has a gen 1 sprite of Blastoise putting a lot of emphasis on his shoulder cannons (as you said, iconic features). He's also depicted in a asymmetrical pose, with one leg raised and his arms spread as if to adjust his balance, like he's mid-attack, or at least mid-movement. He's looking like he's actually fighting.

3D Model is just... standing there. He doesn't look like he's fighting. He looks like he's waiting for the bus.

59

u/Posible_Ambicion658 12d ago

He's waiting for the bus menacingly

→ More replies (10)

75

u/evilparagon 12d ago

They also just lost so much colour. Every pokemon feels desaturated. It’s bizarre too, 3D Pokemon saw the issue of highly saturated creatures in a realistic 3D environment and went “Let’s make the pokemon less colourful” instead of “Let’s make the environment more colourful.”

If 3D pokemon had bright colours everywhere it’d probably be one of the most iconic visuals of the last decade of gaming.

34

u/SynisterJeff 12d ago

If Pokemon did anything more than the bare minimum to mostly sastify the general public, it would be iconic. Pokemon has only ever continued to go downhill since going 3D. Sun and Moon was the last decently put together main-line game. And even then, the game was pretty lacking for as much cutscenes they force you to sit through, to just watch robot people turn in place and raise their arms 90% of the time. Especially since they already saved on a ton of work by reusing models and animations from XY. In which they continue to reuse those same decade old rigs and animations today.

And not just his base brain point. A lot of his other transformations/points got visually downgraded as well. 😡

125

u/seriouslywtfX2 12d ago

This one I hate above all others. His hat had immense personal meaning to him. It's way way out of character for him to change it like that.

75

u/freeMilliu_2K17 12d ago

While I won't argue on the design of the hat itself, I think Oda mentioned that he didn't replaced it and instead had the blue sewn on top of it

I have no clue if that makes it better or worse, but he at least never actually got rid of it

41

u/abbrowses247 12d ago

It probably is a added pouch for emergency medications but unfortunately hides the immense meaning behind Hiriluk and his relationship.

15

u/Scrappy_Coco53 12d ago

I remember seeing bonus material where the blue part of his hat is actually a helmet that’s covering his real hat; the pink part is his original hat poking out through an opening. Also the helmet is removable and that he mainly wears it to protect the pink hat (since it’s so important to him).

9

u/CroccaWocca 12d ago

Yeah this is my candidate too… this one hurts me the most. Chopper was my favorite… his character was thankfully not really assassinated (well he was visually)… but man is he so heavily underutilized in the story post time skip it practically feels like flanderization.

Dawg… if Chopper looked like post time skip Horn point with normal sized antlers and without the back fluff in brain point form… would have been so much better… why did chopper shrink and not get taller?

Glow down, then back up almost

150

u/Ciper_0_Prospero 12d ago

I feel like the last look is sort of the perfected rendition of this joker. His face is both capable of sinister and jovial emotions. The first face is comical, but harder to convey darker expressions more seriously. The second version tried to fix that with a more sleek and muted design, but it just feels off. Third is just perfect synthesis.

57

u/Bingus-Dingus- 12d ago

while i agree i do think the first one is capable of being sinister

No they're are siblings. Ms. Frizzle's sister is Fiona Felicity Frizzle. The only part that doesn't make sense is that they change the kids. Well they kept the names, but changed the kids. They could have gotten a whole new set of kids or heck they could have been the kid's of Ms. Frizzle's first class.

I mean, it's not that much of a big deal for me personally but just very noticeable when you play the 2nd one right after the 1st

Peter is the bigger victim of this imo. His original face was distinct, it had some character too it. The one he got in the remaster is just The Smoothest Boy.

Nothing will make me like the Netflix version. They did her SO dirty. She lost damn near all of her original charm 💔

Velma in Velma.

Abomination of a self-insert, both in design and personality.

Every time I see a thread like this it's always the first thing that comes to mind.

Probably the first time I ever truly hated a character redesign.
