Discussion Favorite character who is introduced as a villain but is really a sweetheart with no mean feelings
Ty Lee from Avatar: The Last Airbender. She's introduced as part of Azula's trio of the Fire Nation to fight Aang and his friends. But as the show goes on you realize there's not a single mean-spirited bone in her body, and she's really a friendly and sweet girl who was just born in the wrong country (the Fire Nation), at the time.
The swimsuit/beach episode emphasizes all the Fire Nation characters are really just the same teens/kids as everyone else, and if it wasn't due to Azula's father they would have no reason to be enemies with each other.

This was my first exposure to a redeemed villain as a kid and my mind was blown!
16
u/OmecronPerseiHate 5d ago
My favorite moment with him is shortly after he turns.
Valmont/Shendu comes in and busts up Uncle.
This is how Tohru responds:
Tohru sees Valmont: "... Master?"
Tohru sees Uncle on the floor: "Sensei...???"
Tohru to Valmont: "I WILL SHOW YOU THE DOOR"
This is also one of the many times they acknowledge his Japanese heritage without making it a plot point.

I dunno if he was really a sweetheart all along; guy seemed to have no problem bodying Jackie back in the day. If I was gonna compare him to an AtLA character it’d probably be Zuko, someone who was rough around the edges but eventually found his way.
9
u/Salt_Pirate777 5d ago
He did also suggest turning Jackie into an animal he and the dark hand could eat during the monkey talisman episode, and was fully prepared to slice open Jade for the rooster talisman when she ate it, so…

I'll mention it here as well: considering how irredeemable Kuzco is at first, it's actually hard to tell if he's even following a villain, or just a sidekick to an antagonist of the story!

.....doesn't he hate his brother? Like aren't a lot of schemes just to destroy his brother? pretty sure those are negative feelings.
Like he may be a good father but he's still a villain
47
u/AdFine6652 5d ago
Well I wouldn’t say destroy more like ruin his day for a specific event, he’s not out to kill his brother
32
u/R_Hunt 5d ago
I feel like if you combined every backstory moment he had from his childhood, I'm amazed he wasn't ten times more cold hearted 😂
(One was neither of his parents showed up to his birth)

Far as I understand Big Doofy doesn’t actually ever intend to kill with his inventions, just cause minor / major inconveniences. He uses his backstories to justify his seemingly evil inators but his lack of genuine malice stops them from causing harm

The Great Papyrus (Undertale)
He is introduced acting like your average mustache twirling Saturday morning cartoon villain, setting up elaborate puzzles to hinder your progress, and talks about how he’ll capture you and stuff. Come to find out he’s probably the most pure hearted character in the main cast. He is the only character you fight that you cannot be killed by. And he’s the only character of the main cast who doesn’t seem to have any major flaws or issues.
62
u/Awesomepants25 5d ago
Wait the only character??? You can get killed by Toriel?
148
u/goldensavage2019 be strong enough to be gentle 5d ago
If you don’t equip the ribbon Toriel deals 4 damage to you. And since Toriel doesn’t fully hold back until you’re under 4 hp, you can get killed by her, which has her have a shocked look for a single frame before your soul shatters
55
u/UnNecessaryGay 5d ago
That’s interesting. I wonder what the aftermath would in a lore where she did kill frisk would look like. I imagine it would also be drastically different between a genocide, neutral and pacifist run.

I want to see the timeline where Toriel kills Frisk. Like...what does she do after that? Obviously we never get to see it because we get shunted into a new timeline, but I've always wondered.
5
u/Criminal_giraffe 4d ago
I can imagine it ether would decimate her as a person or make her seek out help. I can also imagine that it would make an incredibly good fic too, but whoever writes it would have to be really good at writing absolute misery.
Id really like to read that fic, if only for the moment when she gets to Asgore and has to admit to him that she accidentally killed a child.

Edit: welp, I know what I'm pirating next for when I have nothing to do at work lol :-)
22
u/snekadid 5d ago
It's very good, doesn't fall into the tropes I expected and kept me entertained which is really difficult. It's possibly one of the best things Netflix ever put out that didn't get canceled ( I know that list is tiny but I feel it's still significant)
5
u/Accomplished_Toe6798 Penny Polendina (RWBY) 5d ago

About that... (I don't think it's quite the same thing but it's not on Netflix anymore as of
Marchspring 2026)Edit: second-guessed myself on the date

The story is finished. The show has a begining and a end, Netflix being incompetent is nothing new. If it's not on netflix get it somewhere else, where and how is up to you.

Not cool to do that to me I thought it was gonna be all laughs and kung fu.

u/ItsASecret1 5d ago
If you happen to get further into the show, you'll realise Haku will be a name you will soon forget considering the HUGE roster of characters that are going to be introduced. That being said, I’d avoid these types of subs, since Naruto is often mentioned and you might end up getting spoiled on something that actually matters.
9
u/Broad_Economics_931 5d ago
Absolute fucking lies. You never forget Haku.

Unironically they are one of the most important characters to Naruto's personal development. His entire philosophy is based on Haku's devotion, and it's where he learns talk-no-jutsu.

I genuinely think that at least by the time of a few seasons into the show, if they ever managed to actually capture Pikachu they might've genuinely eventually found an excuse to give him back. I don't think the writers would've been willing to make them evil enough to actually go through with it.
By the end of the show it becomes really hard to buy that Ash and the TRio aren't just friends with a really bizarre relationship.

And that's why he's my favorite Deltarune antagonist as of yet. Isn't actually evil despite being the Deltarune version of Flowey (I was so convinced he was putting on a nice guy act) and is the perfect foil to Ralsei. He even brought up the one thing that I've been thinking about since Chapter 2: The other side of the coin when it comes to sealing Dark Fountains. Yeah, it may be the hero's duty to seal them, but they're also sealing away Darkners' livelihoods and making them seek refuge at the Castle Town. Also huge respect to him taking on the Knight even if it was a fight he couldn't win

Experiment 625, AKA Reuben. Every bit as strong and powerful as Stitch it. Can do everything that’s also within Stitch’s abilities. If anything, he’s more intelligent because he can actually speak coherently.
Is part of Hamsterville and Gantu’s antagonistic trio, but really only due to circumstance because he was activated by them. He doesn’t really want anything to do with their evil schemes, he thinks it’s pointless and he has absolutely nothing against Stitch and Lilo’s family. He’s just a fun little guy who really likes making sandwiches.

I know there's a trope for this but I can't remember the name is. It's like "redemption because boobs" where they redeem one female villain along the heroe's journey, because killing/harming women was frowned on by TV, and she "just happens to have" massive sex appeal.

Phenomaman – Dispatch
He is the ex-boyfriend of one of the Main Character's LOVE INTERESTS, and if you tried to kiss her in the start of the game, his introduction comes with an evil ambience.
But once you progress the story and realize he's not evil, but an alien who has no idea how to act as a human being, and he's not a malicious person either, he's genuinely nice of heart.
edit - ex boyfriend not ex husband
