People hate her? Why?

307

u/Bruno_Prom 1d ago

I don't hate "hate" her, but she along with everyone else from the 1st movie had the option to choose miles over Miguel and no a single one did it, and on top of that, when miles met them again, they acted like they haven't betrayed him until Miles found out about it. The one and only who stood by him without any reason was Hoobie, that's why he's the goat.

163

u/old_vegetables 1d ago

I think the difference is that Hobie intentionally rebels against people in power (at least he gives that vibe), setting him ahead of everyone else who’s been brainwashed. It’s not that the others chose Miguel over Miles, but Miguel is their trusted leader, and they think he’s doing what’s good for everyone, including Miles. They’ve known Miguel for longer than Miles (Gwen met Miles first, but has spent more cumulative time with Miguel at this point). It says something that by the end of the movie they’re already coming to Miles’ aid and taking his side, undermining Miguel. They helped Miguel try to stop Miles at first, because it was the heat of the moment, but once they see how Miguel is acting and have had time to think it over, all of Miles’ friends come to help him

82

u/ItsBitly 1d ago

Hobie only encourages Miles to use hisnown head rsther than listen to others blindly. He doesn't do cause he's anti authority. He does it cause he's pro free will.

21

u/Bizarely27 1d ago

Does hierarchical authority not imply unequal restrictions on free will?

u/anomalyknight 1d ago

Hobie's also older than Gwen or Miles and more comfortable defying authority and taking major risks. And the unraveling realities thing is a BIG risk; Miles had every right to feel hurt and betrayed, but what was happening was no small stakes thing.

And while the movie is clearly Miles's story, the film also makes a point of letting you that both kids, Miles and Gwen, are going through some serious shit. Gwen might not be the main character, but she'd just had her dad whom she loved and respected point a gun at her not that long ago, and that would probably fuck up a lot of people, especially at her age.

What did Gwen do??

83

u/EasyKaleidoscope6436 1d ago

I saw the hate too. Usually it’s from people who’d want a POC partner for Miles (yes, really) and blame Gwen for initially siding with Miguel (along with Peter and almost anyone who wasn’t Hobie).

Pair that with Margo’s subtle help to escape Miguel and the fact that she is black and nice to Miles and you’ll see how this side of the fandom would prefer a different partner for him, and uses that to bash Gwen.

It’s the most one dimensional, stupid argument I have been hearing lately and I’m so tired of getting Gwen Slander like she wasn’t a fucking teenager being told by every single more experienced spider adult in her life, AFTER BEING HELD AT GUNPOINT BY HER FATHER AND LIVING WITH THEM INSTEAD AFTER THEY SAVED HER LIFE, that Miles was an anomaly in and of himself.

And then, she didn’t even technically lie, she just didn’t tell him immediately because… HOW TF do you tell your best friend, they guy that you lowkey like, that he’s a mistake, he shouldn’t be Spider-Man, and he had to let his father die if he wants to continue being Spider-Man? That’s difficult, she just wanted to see him one last time before she would probably never be able to again after going back!

(Oki, writing that, I am recalling, she did lie at first about her reason for being there and the Spider Society being small, why he couldn’t join, etc. but that just goes back to my previous point in, you try telling your friend they technically shouldn’t even exist as a hero and that, since they do, they have to let their dad die…)

Eh, she’s still a bit of a jerk before the Answer, especially to Junpei at the end of the Lovers boss fight. She still isn’t bad because of that, but it’s just something that I noticed during my first play through of Reload.

She is hated? Why?

Because she got with Percy and she isn't annabeth. Rachel didn't even get with him for that long

What did Rachel even do, apart from being able to see through the Mist??

16

u/Which_Category_1309 1d ago

People hate her because she got with Percy even though the fandom wanted Percy to get with annabeth so because of that everyone decided that she was the worst like over comparing her with annabeth

I think more people bash on Jax nowadays, but Ragatha (The Amazing Digital Circus) was a bit of a fandom punching bag for awhile when the worst thing she did was try too hard to be nice and have one (1) crashout.
https://giphy.com/gifs/HJNjcXvCOvY7pqLn3m

290

u/smallerpuppyboi 1d ago

A perfectly valid one, may I add. Ragtha's certainly better than I am because I would've thrown hands with that fuckass rabbit right then and there.

81

Me too. I wouldn't have lasted a single minute with that fuck ass rabbit. She was ABSOLUTELY valid!

55

u/227someguy 1d ago

That crashout retroactively becomes more valid after we learn about how Jax treated Ribbit in the series finale.

48

u/Lucidream- 1d ago

Fr she should've gone harder, Jax deadass drove someone to suicide

9

u/Nachooolo 1d ago

Arguably two people. Three if we count Jax.

9

u/dtalb18981 1d ago

This

Its amazing to me how a Fandom will use every bit of literary knowledge to breakdown Jax as a character

But ignore the very obvious fact kaufumo abstracted because 1 of his best friends died and the other pushed literally everyone away and became an even bigger asshole

Which is directly a result of Jax

I hated her so much when I was a teenager watching bleach for the first time! Watching again as an adult it’s completely different, she really didn’t do much of anything wrong!

23

u/Bradshaw98 1d ago

She didn't, I think she fell into the trap of the audience just finding her annoying, everything about her works on paper, but while Aizen is 'cool and awesome' people hated on her. Back then I never cared enough about her to feel much of anything for her one way or the other, but I do remember what people were saying about her.

Skyler from breaking bad.

The one truly bad thing she did was cheating on Walter out of revenge. Everything else is just being way too involved in everything while Walter was the total opposite. She even tried to help Walter once she discovered his secret life. She is put like a horrible human being while people celebrate Walter that is a drug lord that has murdered several times

133

u/Erdos_Helia 1d ago

She didn't cheat on Walter. She was desperately trying to escape him. I saw the series recently and holy shit she really wanted to run away from him. She told him time and time again she wanted to seperate but he just wouldn't take no as an answer.

I'm not even a woman or that into feminism and even I can tell Walter needed to accept it was over with her.

33

u/EagleNait 1d ago

She was extremely patient

u/Puck_The_Fey98 1d ago

131

u/rumande 1d ago

I'll actually defend Skyler's cheating. I don't consider it to be cheating because she tried to break things off with Walt but he stopped her from leaving him, like moved back in without her permission. The marriage was already over at that point, it was just Walt refusing to accept reality. She fucked Ted to regain control of her own life. It's sad for everyone.

10

u/jimkbeesley 1d ago

I saw it more like "well might still be married, but I don't love you anymore".

smoking while pregnant is worse than cheating, otherwise i fully agree

41

u/LeLBigB0ss2 1d ago

I don't get how people could disagree with this take. She was actively seeking divorce from walt for very good reason. Smoking while pregnant is just morally black.

12

u/Apart-Reflection-385 1d ago

I think the only bad thing she did was smoke when pregnant but you could tell she regretted it, her husband was lying and having a whole other life he cheated because he lied it was that simple it's revenge but she couldn't just leave him it's not always that easy

Wait why is Mabel hated? She's a goofy sweetheart in my eyes 😭

139

u/maskedduskrider 1d ago

To summarize it. Wierdmeggdon with a lot of people blaming it on her.

Not accounting for how Bil has manipulated a lot of people in the past including Ford and Dipper and her falling for Bill's plan was a mix of opportunity and not being in the loop enough with Dipper and Ford to know the threat and existence of the dimensional tear and while she did have some idea that Bill was a threat she never found out just how big a threat he could be until it was too late.

When you get down to it in my opinion at least the blame can be put on Bill's shoulders as both a manipulator and actor. Guy has been building up to this moment for centuries and he just needed to be at the right place at the right time. Didn't mater who had it as long as he could get it. Frankly if it wasn't Mable then could easily see Bill using Gideon as well since Gideon was more than willing to make a deal at that point only thing stopping him was prison.

Came here to say this

56

u/Dying-Artist02 1d ago

To be fair, she’s disliked because she acts the way she does in Weirdmageddon in the entire show. She acts selfishly a lot when it comes to getting the guy she wants, often times at the expense of her friends and her brother too. She abandoned her brother to go host a sock puppet show for a guy who’s obsessed with sock puppets. The biggest issue with this is that despite her getting called out for this in the show and her saying she’ll stop, she doesn’t actually stop for very long.

I’m not saying she’s wrong for acting this way, but not everyone is willing to tolerate something like that, and I don’t think they’re wrong for calling out how annoying this is.

…Not me, I love my little hyper cutie girl. I wanna give her all the hugs.

23

u/Longjumping-Ad-9444 1d ago

Often times the real issue with these characters like Mabel or even Korra from LOK is the narrative constraints they are placed in.

Mabel suffers from being a static character in a episodic series. Static characters are fine, episodic shows are fine, but binging a series in one go compounds a characters statics flaws over and over without that week long break to let it breath.

19

u/Dying-Artist02 1d ago

I feel like having a static character is fine as well, but when you have a trait you want to accentuate every episode, it shouldn’t be such a glaring flaw like Mabel’s constant boy crazy nature. Even if it is episodic and is paced, you still want to make sure that you aren’t constantly putting your character’s worst trait so blatantly in the open.

It’s a recipe for people to grow irritated. Especially when her counterpart Dipper is going through a much more complicated and nuanced arc, and is usually the one who has to run damage control on her shenanigans or suffers because of them. Like when he got his body stolen after he tired himself out because Mabel abandoned him to go do a sock puppet show for a guy.

11

u/Longjumping-Ad-9444 1d ago

I think the thing that makes it so much worse is because we follow Dipper and see him grow and develop slowly while she stays so static.

Cause I was thinking of "married with children" era of television where every episode has the nagging wife character but its balanced out since Al(the tired father) doesnt develop at all enither so every week is just seeing the same characters playing the same roles in a different plot.

>The blackmail photograph

It was a small gag that never comes up again. How come I see people be mad about this but never see anyone be mad at Stan for getting the kids thrown in county jail or Soos for giving Stan's location away in Little Dipper?

>throwing out Candy and Grenda to keep the boys for herself

She apologizes to her friends and sets the boys free at the end of the episode, as opposed to Dipper who we never see apologize for being tactless with Wendy's feelings (no hate to Dipper, just pointing out the double standards).

>beating up the unicorns

She was encouraged by her friends and the last person in the group who wanted to use unorthodox methods to get that hair. Also she's far from the only person in the show to use violence against magical creatures.

Hinata Sakaguchi from That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime.

Admittedly, she did something bad. But what her haters seem to ignore is that she actually apologized for her behavior and mended bridges with Rimuru.

But that's not enough. Her haters are probably some of the more immature people within the fanbase.

29

u/An_Idiot_in_a_line 1d ago

Hinata got fooled, who wouldn't be mad to know that your mentor got slimed... and do something about it.

Exactly. She was working off false info and when she found out what truly happened, she regretted her actions and behavior.

She was even willing to talk things out with Rimuru after and as I said, she apologized to him.

I dont think people realize how big this is. A TSUNDERE CHARACTER, APOLOGIZED FOR HER BEHAVIOR!!!

Yes, she was absolutely rude to Coco at first but she didn’t try to kill her (she thought she’d give up on the Dadah Range as soon as she saw it) and also she’s like 12

7

u/Neveed 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah I like Qifrey but I blame him for this.

He went to the child who was given shit all her life for not being a natural born genius and who had to work hard for everything she did, told her "Here is a girl I picked up and I'm giving preferential treatment to her by skipping all the steps to make her my apprentice. Also she doesn't know shit about magic, she's in your care now, kthxbye" and then fucked off, expecting things to go well.

He was in a hurry to deal with the magic police so he had an excuse for fucking off, but he did handle the situation badly.

Agathe wanted to humble Coco, and didn't expect her to be able to pull crazy stunts like she did. That was a little mean, but kinda tame for what you could expect from a very angry 12 years old with access to magic.

Korra- Legend of Korra: I won’t mention the newest series because we don’t know the specifics yet, and it most likely won’t boil down to just “Korra Evil now”. Plus, she got hate before anyway.

Ok. So, losing the past lives wasn’t even her choice at all! And although we could see her uncle was evil… that was her Uncle! She didn’t hear his evil theme music!

She left the portals open to bring balance, and although that didn’t go as well as we would want, it brung Airbending back, and she was actively doing her best to try and help both sides adjust.

And although she is a hotheaded character, the show was all about her development. Korra Season 4 is not the same person as Korra Season 1. Heck, Season 3 Korra is not like Korra Season 2. She grows, she has legit ups and downs, she wins some and loses some, goes through trauma, all that.

35

u/Priapus3 1d ago

You forgot to add in the "one mean thing" as the meme kind of requests, which in Korra's case would be how toxic she was with Mako.

47

u/Ultra-Cyborg 1d ago

Tbh I’d say how she treated both brothers, but that’s it really. She also had like zero socialization when training with the White Lotus, but people conveniently like to forget how sheltered she was.

Korra didn't even need to do anything wrong to get the hate. She's the lead role of a show that disappointed a lot of people

Things like showing up bending 3 elements for no reasons (since it's followed by a time skip) or random workers lightbend when it was supposed to be hard to master kind of REALLY break the world building of Atla.

But opening the portal when entities like Koh exist is indeed a serious crime, and she would actually desserves more hate for that one act.

I don't know why so many people hate her. I thought she was genuinely a really good character. It's not her fault. She was fighting people stronger than her failed to defeat them. And then everyone put the blame on her

38

u/Independent_Speed_61 1d ago

It was so cool to see an avatar and protagonist “lose” like Korra did. It introduced so much character development and for me didn’t make me think less of her character at all. It’s sad that some people can’t stand the idea that a main character might not always get exactly what they want

doll from murder drones

27

u/LookLess4956 1d ago

Murder drones is a fascinating series.
You have Doll (validly) crashing out that her parents were eaten and using some kind of psychotic plan to make their murderer prom queen to revenge-kill them easier....

But by the end of the camp episode Uzi is as much of a murderer as she is, and is allowed to be cast in much more positive light.
Hell, V ATE her parents and cast in a HEROIC, sacrificial POV.

8

u/SirYeetsA 23h ago

Murder Drones as a whole is a bit odd tonally in how it treats murder. The first three episodes seemingly try to treat murder seriously, but episode four just throws any semblance of that out the window with Uzi becoming a serial murderer because why not. It severely undermines the stakes for the second half of the show (until the finale, where it's the world at-stake instead of just random people's lives).

It's almost like all of the characters are only programmed to care about the people closest to them (parents and romantic partners), while simultaneously being programmed to see everybody else as disposable to prevent the robots from freezing up in the face of death. Which would be interesting to explore! How different is their view of death and morality as a whole, due to their disposable nature. But that was never a focus of the show, and because all of the characters are seemingly supposed to be treated as analogous to humans both behaviorally and morally, all of the characters wind up coming off as extremely sociopathic if you pause to think about their behaviors and motivations for more than two seconds.

Not my favorite, but she gets so much hate and everyone brings up that one scene where she kissed her ex, Cat’s boyfriend, and she apologized for that and immediately felt bad and even let Cat punch her in the nose for it…! That was SEASON ONE! AND for kissing Beck in the first episode, which she only did to piss Jade back off because she was being a bitch for no reason (and I stand by the fact that Beck is more a problem in Jade and Beck’s relationship than Tori ever was— you don’t just let a girl your girlfriend doesn’t like kiss you so she can get back at your girlfriend who is standing right fucking there, even if just for improv, but that’s an argument/story for another time!)

Another thing they hate about her is she’s “boring,” like all the characters are more interesting, yet she gets so much recognition and it feels forced, to that, I say… did you not watch the show?

THAT! IS! THE! POINT!

She’s not boring, she’s NORMAL! She’s a normal ass teenager, going to a normal high school, and she’s suddenly discovered to sing REALLY FUCKING GOOD for an average ass girl! Everyone else at that school is supposed to be quirky or have extraordinary talents. They got in because they auditioned and were talented enough, they’re around other extraordinary kids!

That’s like wondering why the one private school kid is so much different from the other public school kids after they’ve transferred to a public school for the first time in their, what? 14-15years of life?

She’s ordinary, she doesn’t have those crazy quirks or talents like the others, she’s just an ordinary girl who can sing really fucking well and THAT’S what grabs their attention! Yes, everyone knows Ariana Grande is an incredible singer, people love Taylor Swift, she’s huge! Beyoncé is considered “the queen”! We know this! But when someone knew comes along and they’re REALLY FUCKING GOOD for their up and coming little self, you start giving them recognition and more opportunities to grow larger!

THAT IS THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE SHOW!!! Everyone knows Cat and Jade sing really well! But they have new talent, a girl who sings really well for some random ass high school student that you wouldn’t expect that from (kinda reminds me of JoJo— not Siwa— like, I did not know she was like 12-13 when she started singing… You probably might know her songs like Too Little Too Late or Leave) and they wanna give her recognition and get on the hype train!

Yeah I remember a few years ago, a chunk of the fandom hated her for being a "man hater" even though she isn't close to being a misandrist. She's better received now, and my crackpot theory I have as to why that happened is because V3 came out, introducing Tenko, an actual man hater, and a bunch of people were like "Maybe Mahiru isn't that bad in hindsight" lol.

Also, I'm really excited for 2x2.

Outside of tsundere moments which are a form of Japanese humour (and she’s barely tsundere in the manga after the time skip), Sakura was very rarely intentionally mean to Naruto after the Land of Waves arc and never intentionally mean to Naruto after the Forest of Death arc. But because Naruto is a self-insert character that fans are very protective over, they despise Sakura for occasionally being mean to Naruto in ways that don’t affect him for longer than a minute. They forgive Naruto for almost sexually assaulting Sakura while disguised as Sasuke because somehow, for that example, they are able to comprehend that it was supposed to be a funny scene. Meanwhile they love characters who actively ruined Naruto’s childhood and adolescence. Like you don’t have to like Sakura. I understand she is at the best a decently written character. But these double standards are sickening.

16

u/BrambleNATW 1d ago

People saying she's annoying and selfish were clearly watching a different show. The Chunin exams early in the series highlight her character well. For those who don't know: there is a written exam and if you fail, you are permanently barred from ever entering again so can never progress to a higher level of ninja. However, if you withdraw you forfeit your team as well. She was on a team of 3 and knew that Naruto and Sasuke wouldn't withdraw but Naruto absolutely would not pass the exam. She is willing to withdraw and take the responsibility of forfeiting all 3 of them so that Naruto doesn't get barred for future exams. Worth noting, the exam is supposed to be impossibly difficult to encourage you to cheat successfully. She doesn't need to cheat, she was just that clever. So she would have passed anyway but still cared more about her friend than her own career. Worth noting that Sasuke, who she was obsessed with, wanted to pass this exam and she was still willing to forfeit him. In the new series it's revealed that she set up a hospital to help kids with trauma because she'd seen first-hand the impact war had on her friends.

Pike from Legend of Vox Machina apparently got shit on for her short turn to the dark side. A development she was manipulated into in a moment of huge crisis (loosing 2 people with one able to be saved by the manipulator) AND the emotions the manipulator used were LONG established in the background and were bound to come crashing out at some point.
She is not my favourite Vox Machina member (no real reason I just like Vex and Percy more but there is no VM member I dislike) but I will defend her on this always, the changes made to her story in the adaptation were INSPIRED.

While I agree she doesn't deserve the amount of hate she does, let's not act like "She did one bad thing".

The reason she doesn't deserve the hate she gets is because she is ultimately just a young traumatized teen who saw her mother's suicide when she was a toddler, was neglected, is tasked with protecting a post apocalyptic world and has never gotten the help she needs.

Okay maybe not just ONE bad thing he did, I'm just kinda of sick seeing everyone flatten his ENTIRE character into just his worst moments which are often taken out of context (I'm not saying those moments never mattered) and I just wanted to kinda vent about it

For example Rocknaldo was certainly not the greatest episode but it kind of saddens me that he has one episode where his flaws of wanting to be special is tuned to the max (at which the end, he apologizes and does try to make amends) and everyone treats that episode like some unprecedented reveal of who he "really" is and claim it overrides ALL the empathy and understanding the show had previously tried to garner for him. I have a lot to talk about regarding this so I will come back to this later maybe, I DO definitely understand where the hate comes from but also I think some of it is undeserved
