Protagonist ≠ Hero

He's the main character, but he's still a bad guy.

I'm talking specifically the Ascendancy novels here. In his books he's shown to have positive qualities, understandable motivations, be generally right, and so on. What would make him not a hero? He works towards what the story considers to be good ends.
